    Default Pirates of Marorbis

This is the OOC reserve first posts for Character Sheets please.

    Spoiler: Fluffery
    Show
“In 708 AF magic users managed to locate other worlds. The rush to explore and exploit began within a decade. Magic users researched spells to send them and their escorts through the void between worlds. Within another decade over three hundred worlds had been explored. Eventually, on worlds that seemed promising and relatively secure, more permanent portals were erected. These required phenomenal amounts of resources to erect, and were often completed thanks to cooperation between wizards and nations of the Old World. The colonization efforts were sporadic and often secretive, sometimes at the behest of a single wizard, other times entire nations were sent forth. The unregulated nature of this exploration and expansion led to many wars erupting between rival wizards and even nations.” -A Historie of the Expansion

“The divine powers took note of the spread of their creations, and it is said they smiled. For they had forseen, and prepared the worlds for their chosen creatures coming. Some worlds were turned into gardens by the gods of good, their natures reflecting their patrons. Others, sponsored by the gods of evil, could be utterly hostile, or surprisingly hospitable. What was soon realized however, is that certain worlds were meant for certain folk. The evil gods lended their less magically inclined creations to them. And woe betide any who were squatting there when they arrived.” -Oracle of Ossos

“Marorbis was found relatively early on in the Expansion. It’s primary feature was it’s extreme abundance of freshwater. The planet is mostly ocean, with sporadic islands and a single large continent. Interestingly enough, all water on the planet is freshwater.” -A Treatie on Various Planets and Their Traits

    Spoiler: History
    Show
The planet of Marorbis was colonized by the Empire of Byraxis, they settled many of the various islands. They were all uninhabited by any intelligent creatures. The portal to the Old World was placed on the most defensible Island. A barren rock called Capstone was chosen. With only one port surrounded on three sides by huge cliffs it was an excellent decision. A fortress was erected using materials both magic and mundane, and the planetary government(subordinate to the Empire of Byraxis of course) was placed there. The various islands were turned into agricultural basins, shipyards, fishing regions, and cities. A new type of wood was native to this planet, one which grew extremely fast and was as durable as oak, several islands were set aside solely to grow this tree for ship building. The world was turned into a breadbasket that provided food for other planets gifted in other ways.

After a century however, external forces cause the collapse of the Empire of Byraxis and Marorbis no longer had a patron. This turned out quite well for it, it produced far more than it needed to survive, and quickly joined a trade confederation with several mineral rich planets to create the Byraxine federation. This has continued to the present day, and has only grown richer. The cities have grown fat with gold, the ships laden with wealth. Rival nations look on in barely disguised envy.

Taking note of this, Marorbis stepped up its defenses, it restructured the original fortress to protect from attack through the portal, turning the defenses inwards. It built a ring of fortresses around the original, to ensure even a total loss of the fortress could be contained. This hasn’t stopped those who seek the wealth however. It just forced them to act in more clandestine ways.

Enemy wizards two decades past managed to erect a new portal on the continent, a place of swamp, disease, angry natives, and hostile jungle. Through it streamed sellswords, cutthroats, and pirates all seeking to steal the wealth for themselves. The Confederation has so far been unable to locate the portal, though they have built up a fleet and managed to raze several pirate towns and ports.

The party enters here, whether they be new to the planet, or grizzled sea dogs is for fate to decide. They have joined a crew of cutthroats with the intention to raid and pillage. And if luck will have it, retire to live a life of wealth and luxury rather than die on the freshwater oceans of Marorbis.

    Spoiler: Pertinent Information
    Show
You have been “recruited”(reads pressganged)by, or joined of your own free will, the Crimson Talon. An interesting vessel, the sails are painted the color of fresh blood, and the hull is the color of dried blood. Captained by one Horace Oliver Octavio Kruell, it has been raiding for 5 years, and gathered a fearsome reputation. It does have a tendency to either kill or enslave those it captures, depending on the capricious nature of the crew. And crew turnover tends to be high, because the discipline measures are kill or kill brutally depending on the infraction. And new recruits are a dime a dozen

If I could also get how you joined the crew and when in your first posts that would make my life easier.

I've got it stated in his backstory that he's right in line with the freshest of the recruits. As for the why and how, I suppose I'll just say that it happened to be the ship he chose after the last one lost half its crew during a mutiny.

    Bracul Umbelli

    Spoiler: Signing the Articles
    Show

The Inn of the Hagfish was, as always, a raucous and violent place to step foot. Even among the many pirates and cutthroats of Marorbis the Hagfish had earned a reputation for gruesome cardgames and drunken debauchment. The bartenders were all grizzled, beefy men. Women wouldn't survive a night.

Bracul stepped through its broken doorframe with over easy confidence and an axe in his hand to back it up. The captain he had heard of, Horace Oliver Octavio Kruell, was searching out fresh blood here. He wouldn't find fresh blood in Bracul, but an experienced hand who happened to be able to heal someone was always valuable.
Some fool attempted to cut Bracul's purse and instead left clutching his severed wrist. Bracul took only minor pleasure in the screams.
The captain of the Crimson Talon sized up the drow as he approached. Quick and vicious, this one was, but there was something else going on there too.
"Captain, Kruell? I am Bracul Umbelli. I would like to sail under your articles."

Kruell raised an eyebrow. Most recruits were drunk or press ganged. Most did not walk up and join sober, even if they were clearly at home with vicious bloodletting.
"Before you ask, Captain, I am an experienced sailor, I also commune with a god for spells, and I need to get to sea for reasons of my own. Nevermind which god. Interested?"

Kruell took a long, long drink of grog. He nodded slowly.
"A couple of things first. I've got an iron grip on my ship. It'll be my ship long after you die, drow, no matter how long you live. Don't get any ideas. Secondly, unless you're of my staff, and you're not, you get one share. One share, one person. Captain gets three, and officers get two. Fair?"

    Bracul nodded.

"Then sign your mark here, lad, And welcome aboard the Crimson Talon. We sail at dawn, two days hence."
"I speak with a voice that will never move others, I speak with a passion that will never be heard." - Kreia, KOTOR II

"I must remind them of the drama of it all." - V, V for Vendetta

    "Lieutenant" Whitlock

Myth-Weavers Sheets Alpha doesn't seem to be able to generate the Statistics Block yet.

Whitlock joined the crew of the Crimson Talon one year ago. Some force compelled his shade to return to his life's occupation, and he deeply missed the twisted camaraderie he had with his old crew. The Crimson Talon had a fearsome reputation even at that time, so Whitlock decided to join up. With a small demonstration of his power, he convinced the Talon's worthy Captain that he would be a very useful asset to have aboard. He kept his true nature a secret, by swathing himself in clothing from head to toe and posing as a common sorcerer. He has no ambitions of taking over the ship, as he disdains the responsibility.

To say Shyra was destined to be an engine of pain and suffering was to speak the truth. Demonic and draconic blood thick in her veins, the half-dragon tiefling relished the suffering of others, and most enjoyably breaking people with her own hands. Her father was a red dragon named Koristraz, a massive and vicious creature, he used shape shifting and his silver tongue to work his way into the imperial aristocracy, manipulating mortals to his heart's content. He was one of the first of his kind to come to Maribosa, seeking to expand his power and of course enjoy his long life. the only companion he brought with him was Nilette, his right hand, a warrior of great prowess. She was a tiefling of the abyssal blood, and savored death and destruction almost as much as her master. Born of their Union Shyra combines both of them, her father's insatiable lust for power and destruction, as well as his draconic might, and the abyssal blood of her mother, strengthening her resolve and will to face the world and make it her own. it's been a year since she set out from home, with her parent's blessings. Knowing it was time to make a name for herself, to rule the seas and claim what was rightfully hers.

    ///////////////////
Shyra is on the boat in order to make some money in the only way she can think of, using her superior might and power.

    Spoiler: Backstory
    Show

It isn't easy, being a member of the Court. Sure, there are fantastic parties, with the wine, and the food, and the music. But the Court has been doing parties for ages. After awhile, even the most debauched celebrations can become tedious. When that happens, the Lords and Ladies of the Court need to find something else to entertain them.

If you happen to be a member of the Unseelie Court, and not one of the Lords and Ladies, there is a very good chance that the entertainment will be at your expense.

So it used to be for Giblan. The tiny Nixie was philosophically aligned with the Queen of Air and Darkness, so he would attend her parties, as was expected of any Unseelie (of course, he couldn't stand being around the Seelie, with their kindness and jollity, and no Fae could remain without a Court for very long). But he quickly found that, being one of the smallest, he was often the target for the Lords and Ladies' “games”. Nothing permanent was done to him. But being hunted down and ripped apart, night after night, only to be put back together when the hunt was done, well, that tends to have an affect on a fellow, even one of the Fair Folk. And then, on one moonless night as he ran for the umpteenth time from the hunting dogs, Giblan felt something twist a little inside him. As an Unseelie Fae, Giblan was never what mortals would call the nicest person. But on that particular night, something rose up in Giblan's little heart. Not fear, nor anger, which is what one would expect. But boredom.

Giblan, after uncounted decades of serving as his Lords and Ladies prey, had become bored of the game. And that boredom was strong enough that he decided to do something about it.

Boredom is a powerful thing in a Fae. It is what drives them to their cruelest, and their most powerful. And on that moonless night, Giblan found himself trapped between the dogs and a pond. With his boredom, Giblan reached into the deep, dark pool, and pulled. He pulled on all the fear he had felt nights before, all the fear of mortals who had heard his screams and the baying of the hounds, all the fear of the Lords and Ladies that, some day, they might get so bored they'd just stop being. And he put that fear in the water, and gave it flesh.

It called itself Uafas. And the Lords and Ladies were so terrified of its gnashing fangs and whirling tentacles that they ran from Giblan and Uafas. And the dogs were the ones ripped apart and put back together in the morning. The Nobles of the Court were so delighted with the surprise and novelty of their prey fighting back, that they offered Giblan a higher position in the Court. Giblan politely declined, saying that he wished to go explore the world away from the Court, the world of mortals, who would provide better fear to feed his new-found joy.

Which is why Giblan and Uafas are currently on the run from agents of their own Court. For some reason, the Nobility of the Unseelie took Giblan's decision as an insult. Imagine that.

So the two have been searching the mortal worlds for a good place to hide. Giblan found himself attracted to the world of Marobis. A world of freshwater, which Giblan loved, and ships, which meant they would always be moving, fit Giblan's qualifications exactly. His experiences in the Unseelie Court had made him devious, but also adept at following orders to the letter, putting Giblan in good spirits to serve on a sailing vessel. Unfortunately, his choice of ship, the Jolly Dolphin, was quickly attacked and ransacked by a much larger and scarier ship. Captain Kruell allowed the small creature to serve aboard the Crimson Talon, and Uafas, not wanting to make a scene, swims along side the Talon, tentacles with suckers allowing the horrifying creature to attach to the ship's hull.

Giblan doesn't mind the Crimson Talon – one ship is as good as another, as far as he's concerned, and he's very good at staying out of trouble. This is not to say, of course, he is loyal to the captain. Like any good Unseelie, Giblan is always looking for means to advance himself, and if a mutiny happened to occur, Giblan might very well put a nice little bolt in somebody's back.

Giblan is not what most mortals would call sane. He laughs at pain and fear, including his own, and he often loses track of what he is doing. The little Fae thrives on novelty, and anything new is likely to hold his attention for some time. While most would regard Giblan as...simple, when he encounters a situation he deems actually important, Giblan's mind works overtime, devising complicated, but usually sound plans. He is respectful of authority, generally, but hates those who he perceives as abusing it. This can vary from case to case, but generally speaking involves using authority to cause physical harm on ones subordinates. Above all else, Giblan strives to be efficient in everything he does, completing his chosen task with the least amount of effort possible.

Giblan is on the Crimson Talon after his previous ship, the Jolly Dolphin, was raided by our good captain. He seeks to stay hidden from the agents of his former Court, drink in the fear of mortals, and generally find new things and experiences.

Realized I hadn't set up a spell list for Bracul's usual preparations. He'll start off with Spell list A prepared and usually prepare that one unless it seems exceptionally likely that there will be no combat on that day (careening the ship, far off a shipping channel, Most of the crew's injured, etc.)

Quick question, DM. In a clean world, Bracul would have blessed the boarding crews (since it lasts five minutes right now) a few rounds before boarding. Can we declare that the course of action, or should I just move forward without that pre-combat buff?

Why do I get the sneaking suspicion that a mutiny is in the future?

.... Looking at the DC, probably not going to make it but I'll post it here first to explain his actions afterward.

Bracul would like the Headband of Wisdom, the +1 heavy wooden shield, and the ring of protection +1, in that order in case of conflict of interest.
Also, one handful of pellets to replace the one he spent (yay stasis!)
