1571 - The Battle of Lepanto between the Holy League (principally Spanish and Italian ships) and the Ottoman Empire, and the beginning of the end of Ottoman dominance of the Mediterranean. According to some historians, the true mastermind in command was Lluis de Requesens i Zúñiga, but John of Austria, the bastard half-brother of King Philip, was credited with the command for propaganda reasons.

Edit: Spelt the poor chap's name the Castellano way, for shame. Not sure about Zúñiga; pretty sure it should be Zunyiga but I can't find support for that online so I'll leave it.

October 7, 1337: King of England Edward III declares himself to be the rightful King of France rather than Philippe VI. This is the starting point of a series of conflicts known as the Hundred Years' War, which will last until 1453 (formal peace will be signed in 1475). By the end of the conflict, the population of France will be reduced by half, due to the combination of plague, famine and war. From that point on, England will be an island nation, having lost nearly all its possessions on the continent. The two countries will remain enemies most of the time until 1904, when they finally find a good enough motive (in the form of a common enemy, Germany) to get to an agreement.

That's certainly the common perception, and France does occupy an almost unmatched "old enemy" status in the English mindset although I have previously questioned the accuracy of it. For quite a while, the HYW was itself basically a French civil war with the English forming a third party allied to the Burgundians. For much of the 16th and 17th centuries, the real Big Bad as far as England/Britain was concerned was Spain, and France was a useful ally and often good friend against it. Things changed a bit under Louis XIV and the early colonial period was one of high tension and frequent warring, but after the question of dominance was effectively settled in 1815 general policy again became if not actually chummy at least not actively hostile. From about 1815 onwards - and certainly from 1853 - Britain and France were more often than not on the same side.

There was also the period of history from 1066- roughly 1200ish with the reign of King John where England wasn't distinctly its own entity and the nobles usually had just as much land in France, if not more.

To be honest, in the pre-Westphalian era (after 1453) England is relatively unusual in that it is pretty easy to draw a line round it and say "this is England, and everything else isn't". Pretty much everywhere else in Europe, including France, was a terrible mess in terms of trying to work out what was what. Even England had dubious bits - much of the border region with Scotland, Ireland, and the constitutional status of various bits and pieces of England itself is still open for question (Cornwall and, most recently, Doncaster, not to mention Wales).

I agree that this common perception is an over-generalization. There were times of peace in that era, and even two instances where the two countries were allied (both cases were short-lived). However, you can see on this page no less than 16 instances of war (some very small, some big) with the French and English on opposite sides between the Hundred Years' War and Napoleon. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Spain was Big Bad from the French point of view as well, because it was squeezed between Spanish owned territories (in Germany, and Spain itself). But that didn't automatically translate into alliances. In fact, England allied with Spain against France in some instances, and with France against Spain in others. Then France allied with Spain against England, making the graph complete.

Then once Napoleon was gone, things went somewhat better, with some trade treaties and even joint military action. But trust wasn't ever great, and the race for colonies heated things up again. Coincidentally, I'm reading The War That Ended Peace by Margaret Macmillan right now: As it turns out, around 1900 Britain first looked to ally with Germany, until the naval buildup by Wilhelm II convinced the UK governement that the Entente Cordiale with the French was a safer deal.
