Default MERC XVI: Morality is Relative; Professional Standards Aren't!

    MERCENARY ESPIONAGE AND RECONNAISSANCE CORPORATION

The Mercenary Espionage and Reconnaissance Corporation is the most prominent faction of mercenaries and adventurers in this world. Their skills are offered for hire to anyone who can pay. More than that, the Corporation exerts considerable control over the teeming masses of the freelance mercenaries, adventurers, hired weapons and troubleshooters of the chaotic land of the Nexus. They offer licenses that entitle one to discounts, legal protection and job offers... in exchange for a cut of the profits. To that effect, MERC has offices in Inside, Riverside and Skyside. MERC does not appreciate competition, so unlicensed mercenaries operating in these cities are subject to a negative marketing campaign. If one proves troublesome, harsher steps may be taken.

    Hiring MERC:
    Spoiler
    Show
Hiring MERC is as simple as providing any information needed and negotiating appropriate payment. Contracts must gain the approval of a MERC member. If the member thinks the job is too risky, doesn't pay well enough or is otherwise troublesome, they may contact Dipsnig or one of his lieutenants for special approval.

There are two categories of official MERC contracts. MERC Member Contracts, jobs to be carried out exclusively by MERC members, and MERC Licensed Contracts, jobs to be posted publicly for any MERC license holders to complete.

The following for must be filled out. MERC Member Contracts are posted in an area exclusively viewable by MERC members, while MERC Licensed Contracts are posted in all MERC locations and are viewable by all license holders.
Job Description: Brief description of the job to be performed.
Contract Type: MERC Member Contract or MERC Licensed Contract.
Hired by: Character or group name (Player name).
Target: Character or group name (Player name).
Payment: Approximate or specific where applicable.
    Notes: Any additional information.
Note that MERC refuses to deal with slavers, the organization AMEN, and they won't carry out assassinations.

I have decided that the best way to spend some of that capital is to obtain any sort of intelligence and information that could help with future jobs. To that end, we would like to hire MERC to conduct reconnaissance on Remnant, the Irregulars, Riverside law enforcement, and, to a lesser degree, HALO and Vigil. Emergency response times. Operational procedures and tactics. Equipment and vehicle specifications. Photographs of bases, video of actions, maps of patrol routes, even personnel dossiers if you can get them. That sort of thing.
The above contract was amended to include Skyside as well. Members are highly encouraged to perform recon in Skyside, as the leadership needs the information for more than one purpose.

    Licenses:
    Spoiler
    Show
Those unwilling or unable to join MERC full-time can apply for their licenses. Obtaining one is relatively simple, requiring only coming to their main base or one of the offices and filing in their name. A license comes with the following benefits:
    • Discounts in Trog's Tavern, Black Dragon's Den, Erin's Emporium and Azik's Enchantments
    • Protection from dishonest employers.
    • Access to MERC Licensed Constracts.
    • Free medical care by MERC's lieutenant and medical robot, CB.

In exchange for the license, its holder is obliged to pay MERC a cut of their profits.

However, the license may be revoked if the holder breaks MERC's restrictions on jobs or glaringly breaches the organization's professional standards. The first time it happens, the license can be returned for a fee. The second time the fee is higher and the third time, the license is revoked permanently.

    Membership Information:
    Spoiler
    Show
In order to be hired as a full-time member of MERC, one needs to prove their worth either to their leader or one of his lieutenants. Usually, it involves being a mercenary of some skill and professional standards, but the organization is also open to those with other valuable skills, provided they can prove that they'd be useful to the group. Full-time MERC members enjoy the access to MERC-exclusive jobs, and a cut of the profits and influence their control over the mercenary business brings.

    Locations:
This thread not only serves to contain the MERC base, but also all other MERC associated locations. These locations are separate from each other and events in one location will not affect the others. Because of this, please label posts appropriately for any scene's location.

    MERC Base:
    Spoiler
    Show
The base consists of several buildings located in the cold regions of the Nexus. It tends to snow a lot. It resembles an arctic base somewhat, but is much more friendly and hospitable.

    Layout:
    Spoiler
    Show

One central building, containing the common room, the kitchen, the infirmary, the armoury and the tunnel entrance. Four smaller buildings connected to the main one by roofed corridors: One for sleeping quarters, one for the laboratories, one for the training area and one for storage. Also, there are considerably large beast pens also connected with the main building.

    Main Room:
    In need of description.

    Room Descriptions:
    In need of description.

    Infirmary:
    Spoiler
    Show
This room has come a long way from where it was. The circular room has been fitted with a number of high-tech hospital beds, and some healing tanks. The walls are lined with supplies, tools, medical apparatus, and many things that look very, very advanced. Everything short of surgery can be done in here. The tanks are on the far side of the circle from the door, five of them, currently empty. A sign is posted next to the tanks:

WARNING: HEALING TANKS ARE ONLY FOR EMERGENCIES. ONLY USE TANKS WITH DOCTOR RECOMMENDATION. ACTIVE TANKS MUST BE MONITORED BY A TRAINED PROFESSIONAL AT ALL TIMES.

Against the wall near the entrance are a number of stretchers. One spot in the right wall is a marked out section of blank wall. A note is attached:

“See about having a door put in here, for emergencies.” Oddly, on the other side of that wall is the armoury.

Almost missable in the calculated medical clutter are white curtains, which can be pulled upon tracks in the ceiling to give bedridden patients some peace. Sanitation stations (like modern hospital sinks, but even cleaner) are at the front and back of the room. Each station has spots for hand washing, instrument washing, general trash throw-out, and hazardous trash throw-out.

Yeah, the MERC infirmary is now prepared for anything short of surgery.

The surgery is done in the member’s quarters.

CB-484, not seeing the point in a large room for himself, has converted the bulk of his room into a fully-equipped futuristic emergency room and surgery centre. It has lots of adjustable lights, emergency supplies, pointy objects, things with large warning signs on them, and a sanitation station. One door off to the side is marked “CB-484 Only.” What was once the closet of the room has been deemed suitable to be CB’s living quarters, and he has no intention to expand.

    Kitchen:
    In need of description.

    Labs:
    In need of description.

There's an extensive cave and tunnel network is located under the base and the mountain behind it and some tunnels go forth to key Nexus locations. Both are accessed through the main building. There's a separate door for the complex and the tunnels.

    Defences:
    Spoiler
    Show
    • Secure walls and windows that can be locked if needed.
    • Six Aperture Science laser-targeting chain-gun turrets placed on the exterior of the base.
    • Two Asuran golems programmed to obey MERC members and defend both the personnel and the base.
    • Clockwork penguins, armed with light machine guns. Crude and ineffective, but numerous.
    • Dimensional lock placed on the entire base.

    Offices:
    Spoiler
    Show
MERC has offices in Riverside, and Skyside, where mercenaries can come to receive licenses, inquire about job opportunities, make complaints about dishonest employers, and conduct other administrative business. Their offices in Inside were closed due to a conflict with the government. Their operations there are now underground, literally and figuratively.

    Common Building:
    Spoiler
    Show
MERC has a building located in Inside to serve as a place for MERC members and MERC license holders alike to gather. Here they can plan and discuss jobs, network with fellow mercenaries, or simply socialize.

    Description:
The common building is a large building in the suburbs of Inside, with two floors. The inside of the building is rather plain and simple, but solid. Not luxurious, but enough for a hard-working mercenary to rest. The rooms inside are as follows:
    • The job room - it contains a list of all available jobs, and this is also where potential employees can come looking for someone to solve their problems.
    • The bar - here, the mercenaries can eat and drink. It has a wide menu for a variety of species and tastes. Nexus being what it is, it makes no assumptions about 'standard adventurer fare'
    • Recreation area - a large room with card tables, a pool table and some couches, for the mercenaries to relax.
    • Pool - a bit more extravagant. One of the rooms opens up on the outside, and contains a swimming pool.
    • Training Area - a simple room for the mercenaries to train and spar.
    • Sleeping Rooms - upstairs, there's a number of rooms for the mercenaries to rest. They're small and rudimentary, only meant for those who for some reasons can't or won't rent rooms in Trog's.
    Spoiler
    Show

    OoC Rules:
    Spoiler
    Show
    • No godmodding.
    • No destroying the whole place. No, not even then. This applies to all locations.
    • Keep the curtains to a reasonable amount.
    • Label posts for appropriate location. It's especially important here, seeing as there are multiple buildings in this thread.

If his plan is to sneak along through shadows, he might want to come up with something else.

((I asked Morty what the place looked like and my guess was correct. Fade hasn't been spotted and I wanted to describe the place better so you have a chance to do something else. It should also be noted that to sneak to the truck, he'll have to sneak past The Knight, The Chain-Caster, The Wolf, and three big blue boxes.)

    Truck 1

Xun will see the wounded man begin to shudder a bit and the medic panics, ripping open packets and pouring the powder on the bullet wounds, blood gushing out of them once more. "Nononono. Come on, not you..." The Doctor says, sweating profusely even in the cold air. "Not you, little brother. Come on." He begs, only to see the other man stop shaking and the bleeding to slow. The breathing of the man also stop though, making the older doctor cry out and set his forehead on his dead brother's back. No one else there offers even the slightest comfort, sticking to their assigned jobs.

    Truck 2

It doesn't take more than a second for Brokenfang to figure out what the golem's plans are, and she certainly can't allow the truck to be disabled. Even so, she can't help but grin as she steps forward, the claws leaving her left gauntlet as the right one swells up to several times it's previous size, making a large heavy spiked fist. She begins to hum to herself a rather catchy tune before she attempts to sweep the golem's legs out from under it with the new fist, before bringing it down heavily on its chest with a roar, likely strong enough to crush the chest piece inward or at least rattle the circuits inside. Either way, the Golem will have made a pretty large dent in the armor side of the truck before she acts.

    Truck 1

He doesn't try to hide himself or anything, walking in plain sight towards the truck, with his partisan held high and resting against his shoulder. Without that stupid nuclear warhead in tow, he's nowhere near as limited in his capabilities in the coming conflict. There's nothing to stop him from fighting at his best.

Xun quietly senses the magic around her. Unless something prevents, Fade should feel her power sliding gently up against his, though it's not doing anything yet.

    Behind Enemy Lines

I think I haven't made clear where Fade is right now, too. Fade is in his shadow so it's his shadow sliding over the ground. You could imagine it as if something flies over you adn you see only the shadow from ti sliding over the ground. Now remove the flying thing, but don't remove the shadow.^^
Still from the current things, The shadow can't go to them unseen. The open white area will make the black shadow shine like a light-house in the night.

When Krait shows himself, fade thinks this might be his chance. Fade's shadow slides over the ground, trying to get past the boxes and the wolf creature. (These are the closest?). Xun's magic reacting strange to Fade's natural magic. Half way through the truck, the shadow splits into three. One heading for the harpoon caonon, one for the chain caster and the last one for the truck. Only onw is the real the rest are illusions, but a mage migth not notice the difference.

The golem falls to the truck floor as she swoops it's leg under and Broken fang makes a huge cavity in the golem's chest. The construct it down but it's still refuses to give up. Having nearly broken down completely internally it still thrashes around widely with it's arms, possibly hitting the wolfen with the wide swings of it's heavy arms before completely shutting down.

    Enemy Lines

Krait's presence is answered swiftly by the figure in golden armor. The large knight steps forward, off of the truck, and begins to walk past the Wolf. As it does so, the knight holds up his rifle with one arm and drops it into the snow, followed shortly by a large pistol and a belt of ammo clips. Finally, when about twenty feet away, it draws the handle of a sword and raises it high, activating a shimmering blade four feet long. At the same time, a large kite shield grows out of the armor on his left arm. "Godfrey. Fell Knight of New Avalon. Sees you." It says, holding the blade up high in salute before positioning the shield directly in front of it's body with the blade horizontally above it.

The Chain-Caster is the first to notice the shadow splitting and she gives a cry of warning. She's too late to prevent them getting close on her own however. "Infiltrators in the shadows!"She shouts, reaching above her to draw a bundle of bright light from the air itself. The act of doing so seems to take quite a bit of strength as she instantly breaks into a sweat, but a chain of solidified light shoots forth to strike at the shadow heading for her. Physically it won't be damaging, but it should destroy the shadow and any shadow magic.

As for the harpoon cannon, the crew hop off of the assault bike/cannon, allowing the harpoon to continue winching on it's own as they raise assault rifles and begin firing at the shadow headed towards them. They're joined by one of the three raiders from the other truck as the others are busy working on loading their wounded man into the passenger seat of Truck 2. The rifles don't fire normal bullets though, instead shooting hardened rubber slugs that are made to pummel and incapacitate.

The third shadow will find the doctor inside the truck grabbing a rifle from the wall, alongside two others. The wraith boy stands at the top of the ramp though, eyes watching the shadow and waiting, seemingly unconcerned. Then again, he's already dead so what does he care?

    Truck 2 => MERC Hallway

When the golem hits the floor and Dipsnig's shots are fired, Brokenfang is already kneeling down in the middle of her blow, so the concussive blasts miss. Where they miss, the golem's flailings hit though and her helmet gets cracked. With a growl she dismisses the piece of armor before pulling the golem up with her as she stands, holding the deactivated body like a shield as she charges out the back of the truck. "LIKE A WREEEEECKING BAAAALL!!" She shouts merrily, throwing the quarter ton mass at Dipsnig as she takes a pair of steps through the hallway. Once it's thrown, she leaps at the second golem, her heavy fist leading the way in an attempt to punch right through its chest. Literally.

This time the blow is blocked by the second golem's arm. As it only used one arm to block something seems to break inside of it. But it allows the automaton to return the favor by punching the wolfen in the stomach with all it's might.

    [Dena's Room]

The drow returns here, still in her Dys disguise, her clothes looking unusually shabby. She doesn't even have time to look around before hears the alarm however. ****.

She retrieves her communicator and goes the check on the security cameras. Staring onto the screen for a moment. Well, this was just what she got from having a little bit of fun with Kal. A ****ing invasion. She puts it away, throwing the communicator at the bed. She had seen enough.
Now she had to consider her options here, either she could simply pretend she had been busy elsewhere and missed the entire thing or she could attempt to join in the defense. While the first one was tempting, MERC's misery was her misery so she ought to do something.

Dispelling the disguise she starts to hastily change into her battle gear. Hopefully it wouldn't be too late when she got done.

Dipsnig expertly catches the golem as it is sent flying at him. His natural quickness is compounded with the power suit's immense strength. Nonetheless, the armour's legs buckle and he backs away a step or two. He composes himself quickly, though.

"You want to play dodgeball, you mangy mutt? Well, I don't."

With that, he rushes forward - inasmuch as the power suit can rush - trying to simply smash the golem into Brokenfang.

    Inside MERC

The golem's blow is successful, though it doesn't seem too damaging. Instead it knocks the wind from her and shoves her back, directly in the way of Dipsnig. He's rewarded by shoving her successfully into the wall, making a crunching noise. The moment he does so, he might notice blood dripping onto the floor from the other side of the golem. At first it's just a little, a few drops, but it quickly begins to turn into a lot more than that, becoming cups and then pints of blood.

Brokenfang just begins to chortle ominously from behind the golem.

    Rilla's Sensors

The power source belonging to Brokenfang quickly begins to grow in power, doubling, then tripling, and finally growing to nearly four times the amount it was before in the span of just a handful of heartbeats.

The polearm extends and retracts slowly, as Krait gauges what would be the most appropriate length for the weapon at this occasion, and makes its magical nature abundantly clear to the man who will be facing it. No surprises in this bout.

Or at least, the partisan won't be a surprise. I don't think Krait would be too adverse to having another vicious trick or three up his sleeve, and establishing an illusion of honor and fair play would make such trickery all the more unexpected later on.

Dipsnig drops the golem and backs away quickly. It's never a good sign if your enemy starts laughing after you smashed them between quarter a ton of metal and a solid wall. Besides, as a goblin, he's naturally inclined to listen to a call of retreat.

The golem stands back in a defensive position, at the doorway to prevent further access to the base. It's ready for anything.

    Truck 2 => MERC Hallway

Literally.

    Enemy Lines

The first shadow that headed to the chain caster is hit by the chain. The shadow looks like its exploding and after a blink it's gone. Nothing left then the light chain that destroyed it.

The one aiming for harpoon canon seem to be not disturbed by the bullets. The bullets just swirl up the snow as the shadow continues his slide.

The third shadow stops. The wraith might be dead, but Fade has met enougth undead to know that they might be dangerouse. Still he got less options and the third shadow attemps to slide past the wraith into the truck.

    MERC Hallway

The golem pressed against the invader has a fist punched through the back as Brokenfang gives a roar. The fist grabs the side of the hole it's made, and her other hand joins it before ripping the golem in half. After the pieces fall, it's revealed that the Wolfen's white armor has been coated in blood, though there's no source of it despite several cracks being visible in the plates. It seems that it is the armor itself that is bleeding, leaving a pool of blood under her. Her eyes are the same color and streaks of blood run from her eyes and down her cheeks. "I had given you a choice, Dipsnig." She says, picking up the pieces of the golem and throwing them through the door and into the truck. "You chose...poorly."

Not expecting a response, she sprints forward in a surprising burst of speed before swinging her fist with even greater power than before at the second golem's stomach. Where she damaged the arm before, she might be able to simply crush it and the chest both.

    Enemy Lines

The soldiers near the cannon-bike stop firing and flip down their visors or sunglasses as one pulls a small grenade from his belt. He activates it and tosses it near the shadow, and unless something is done, the flash-bang will go off, potentially destroying the shadow by mundane means.

The shadow that tries to slip by the wraith will find that the wraith is awfully quick, simply shifting from where it was to stand directly in front of the shadow. The ghostly boy will attempt to reach into the shadow and hit whatever is inside with bone-chilling cold and terror. It is a magical attack, but as the wraith is a being of shadow itself, it should be able to reach in unless Xun decides to interfere once more.

The knight's helm nods and after the partisan shifts a little bit, Godfrey acts, the jetpack and rocket boots suddenly activating and launching him right at Krait with shield held in front. It seems that the knight plans to pummel Krait right into the ground.

As the flashbang hits, Xun holds her focus on the main shadow. Hopefully it'll help with any necessary dodging or defensive actions. She's still got one eye on the big wolf though.

His concussive blasts having not reloaded yet, Dipsnig opts for closing his distance and trying to simply clock Brokenfang in the head with great force.

Well shoot. Now would normally be an excellent time to work his polearm under the shield and stab the knight in the underbelly, but that wouldn't fix anything, would it? He'd still have a huge hunk of meat barreling straight at him, even if his partisan managed to get through the armor and stab Godfrey good. No, for now he'll just have to settle for momentarily dropping his weapon and rolling out of the way. He was fairly small and swift to begin with; let's hope the knight can't turn on a dime like Krait can.

When Dipsnig starts his charge, Brokenfang changes tactics and skids to a stop right before he'd hit her. Instead of allowing herself to be hit, she shifts her head to the side and then attempts to grab his arm before twisting and throwing him behind her, using his own momentum to aid her in the action. She aims for the back of the truck, aiming to get him out of the way for the moment so she can finish off the golem.

Even clad in the power armour, Dipsnig is deceptively quick. When Brokenfang makes her grab, he jumps backwards, yanking his arm away. The furtive, sneaky motions of the goblin fighting style are visible even in the magic-powered golem shell.

Fade in his shadow is fast, but the Wraith seems faster. Still he wasn't that unprepared. As the Wraith attacks, a hand comes out of the shadow holding a longsword. He brings the blade in the way to block the attack. If that works the Wraith might here some words out of the shadow and a moment later sparks run over the blade as it got charged.

The golem stands back in defense mode after Rilla's warning, it's not going to engage Brokenfang in her supercharged mode and it looked like Dipsnig had the upper-hand at the moment. Barely.

    Inside

Brokenfang shifts her feet to give herself a more stable stance before she raises her fists up, ready to strike and defend herself in a classic boxing stance. "Call off your people, Dipsnig, and I'll call off mine. This can be over in five minutes or we can go about this all day. I've gotten more than enough to have made this profitable. Don't make this even more costly for you. We haven't even started being lethal yet." She certainly sounds proud of that.

    Enemy Lines

Krait is indeed lucky that the Knight is so bulky. He certainly can't turn on a dime and crashes shield first into the snowy ground. The shield is dented on impact, but it snaps off Godfrey's arm with a popping sound as he detaches it. Using the impact to aid his momentum, the Knight rolls several feet further before standing on his feet, sword held in both hands and held in a mid-guard towards Krait.

The moment the sword appears, the doctor and two of the other raiders open fire at the weapon and hand, hoping the rubber bullets will knock it away or cause the hand to go back into the shadows. The wraith on the other hand jerks back when the sword appears, uncertain of what that sword can do. It isn't likely that it can hurt him, but he wishes to be cautious.

"Get out," is all Dipsnig has to say to her at this point. Into the communicator, he says:

    "Disengage and let them leave."

The hand got a tight grip on the sword and the rubber bullets just drop off. The hand also get's hit, but immediatly after the bullets hit Fade, he draws back his hand and sword.
Some bullets, who have missed their target fly straith into the shadow. This stops after the hand and sword are gone.
Fade would have gone all in now, but he heared the message from the boss. So the shadow slides off, not directly back to the tunnel. he heads to the place krait fights, just to assisst the Disengage.

Krait grabs his weapon from the ground and lunges with his polearm, aiming it right at the center of the knight's guard, where one would least expect the kobold to strike. One might be tempted to think it's a feint, and a poorly crafted one at that, but no, this is exactly what Krait means to do.

He might've considered disengaging, but deliberately chose to not equip himself with a communicator. Distracting goblin and his consort babbling in his ear mid-battle? A terrible idea, no matter the situation.

"All units. Disengage and pack up. Self-Defense only."
Brokenfang says into her neck guard. Her eyes fade to normal and after a few seconds, the blood on her armor slides off, revealing the white beneath. It seems that she's powered down for the moment. That said, her guard doesn't go down as she backs up towards the entrance. "Any tricks, and this is off." She warns.

    Enemy Lines

Fade is allowed to leave without issue, but Krait on the other hand seems to be busy not knowing what his commander has asked him to do. The Knight follows its own command though and lowers the blade, leaving itself entirely open to the attack which results in the partisan punching right through the breastplate and even out the back of the knight. The helm looks at the kobold curiously before reaching up to grab the weapon's shaft in an attempt to hold it in place.

And then the breastplate splits right open, revealing a hollow cavity filled with slithering silver cables. Several of them burst out towards Krait in an attempt to latch onto his arms, legs, and even neck in order to drag the kobold within. The entire time a horrible electronic screaming sound can be heard from the open cavity.

Elsewhere, the rest of the raiders seem to ignore the commotion and go about picking up everything left on the ground and loading up into the vehicles with the Wolf and Chain-caster going into the back of Truck 2 as they wait for word to move out.

    ...

Actually, this is probably the best option Krait has right now. Nobody will suspect he turned traitor if he just tells them they kidnapped him and the nuke, right? He makes a token effort at resisting, before giving up and getting engulfed in this horrible, disgusting, traumatizing abomination.

When Brokenfang backs up into the truck, she hits the side three times, giving a loud bang each time. Immediately after, the driver flips a switch and a small set of specialized blasting charges go off in the back of the truck, detaching the thin rear wall of the truck so it can pull away. Brokenfang even gives a wave to Dipsnig as it starts to drive off.

    Enemy Lines

As Krait is pulled in, the partisan is pushed all the way through the Knight, making it fall on the ground behind him before the breastplate seals shut, sealing Krait inside. The Knight takes a moment to stand the fallen weapon up against a tree in respect before heading into the back of the second truck, picking up his damaged shield on the way.

Unless otherwise stopped, the raiders will pack up the three blue boxes and the wolf will leap into Brokenfang's truck while the Chain-Caster goes into the Passenger seat of the other one. Several of the raiders heft up the destroyed blast door into the back of Brokenfang's truck before getting onto their assault snowmobiles. The snowmobiles and harpoon cannon/bike form up flanking positions on the two large trucks, everyone takes a moment to check their guns and vehicles, making sure everything was picked up.

Brokenfang leans out the back of her truck, facing MERC with a grin as they all begin to pull away and down the mountain. "Farewell! Until we meet again!" She shouts before pulling out a flare gun and firing it into the air. As the trucks pull away, the flare bursts into a giant red bleeding paw shape that hangs there and will continue to do so for several hours unless someone uses magic to get rid of it.
