    Default Form Shaper [WIP, PEACH]

A class I've been working on a little bit. Still needs fluffing, but I wanted to see how well it'd work from a mechanical standpoint and get general feedback about it.

    Form Shaper

    Infinite Variety

Shape Form (Ex): At level 1, a Form Shaper gains the ability to form her body into the shape of any medium humanoid. The Form Shaperís options for new forms include all creatures with the same type as the Form Shaper or the humanoid type. The maximum HD of an assumed form is equal to your hit dice. You can change into any member of your own kind or even into yourself. You maybe choose to gain the physical ability scores of an average member of the species. Your class and level, hit points, alignment, base attack bonus, and base save bonus all remain the same.

You retain all supernatural and spell-like special attacks and qualities of your normal form, except for those requiring a body part that the new form does not possess (such as a mouth for a breath weapon or eyes for a gaze attack). You keep all extraordinary special attacks and qualities derived from class levels (such as a barbarianís rage ability), but you lose any from your normal form that are not derived from class levels (such as a dragonís frightful presence ability).
If the new form is capable of speech, you can communicate normally. You retain any spellcasting ability you had in your original form, but the new form must be able to speak intelligibly (that is, speak a language) to use verbal components and must have limbs capable of fine manipulation to use somatic or material components.

You acquire the physical qualities of the new form while retaining your own mind. Physical qualities include natural size, mundane movement capabilities (such as burrowing, climbing, walking, swimming, and flight with wings), natural armor bonus, natural weapons (such as claws, bite, and so on), racial skill bonuses, racial bonus feats, and any gross physical qualities (presence of absence of wings, number of extremities, and so forth). A body with extra limbs does not allow you to make more attacks (or more advantageous two-weapon attacks) than normal.
You do gain the extraordinary special attacks of your new form, but not the formís extraordinary special qualities not noted above under physical qualities, such as darkvision, low-light vision, blindsense, blindsight, fast healing, regeneration, scent, and so forth.

You do not gain any supernatural special attacks, special qualities, or spell-like abilities of the new form. Your creature type and subtype (if any) remain the same regardless of your new form. You cannot take the form of any creature with a template, even if that template doesnít change the creature type or subtype.
You can freely designate the new formís minor physical qualities (such as hair color, hair texture, and skin color) within normal ranges for a creature of that kind. The new formís significant physical qualities (such as height, weight, and gender) are also under your control, but they must fall within the norms for the new formís kind. You are effectively disguised as an average member of the new formís race. If you use this ability to create a disguise, you gain a +10 bonus on your Disguise check.

When the change occurs, your equipment, if any, either remains worn or held by the new form (if it is capable of wearing or holding the item), or melds into the new form and becomes nonfunctional. When you revert to your true form, any objects previously melded into the new form reappear in the same location on your body they previously occupied and are once again functional. Any new items you wore in the assumed form and canít wear in your normal form fall off and land at your feet; any that you could wear in either form or carry in a body part common to both forms (mouth, hands, or the like) at the time of the reversion are still held in the same way. Any part of the body or piece of equipment that is separated from the whole retain their shape. If slain the subject retains their current shape, although they remain dead. Voluntarily reverting from an assumed form consumes a standard action. This ability may be treated Wildshape if it is beneficial to the Form Shaper.

    • At level 2, the Form Shaper may assume the shapes of creatures of the animal type. You may assume the shape of small sized creatures of any type that you can assume with shape form.
    • At level 3 the Form Shaper may assume the shapes of creatures of the Vermin type. You may assume the shape of tiny sized creatures of any type that you can assume with shape form.
    • At level 5 the Form Shaper may assume the shapes of creatures of the giant type. You may assume the shape of large sized creatures of any type that you can assume with shape form.
    • At level 6 the Form Shaper may assume the shapes of creatures of the monstrous humanoid type.
    • At level 7 the Form Shaper may assume the shapes of creatures of the fey type. You may assume the shape of diminutive sized creatures of any type that you can assume with shape form.
    • At level 8 the Form Shaper may assume the shapes of creatures of the ooze type.
    • At level 9 the Form Shaper may assume the shapes of creatures of the plant and aberration types.
    • At level 10 the Form Shaper may assume the shapes of creatures of the magical beast type.
    • At level 12 the Form Shaper may assume the shapes of creatures of the dragon type. You may assume the shape of huge sized creatures of any type that you can assume with shape form.
    • At level 13 the Form Shaper may assume the shape of fine sized creatures of any type that you can assume with shape form.
    • At level 14 the Form Shaper may assume the shapes of creatures of the undead and deathless type.
    • At level 15 the Form Shaper may assume the shapes of creatures of the construct type.
    • At level 16 the Form Shaper may assume the shapes of creatures of the elemental type.
    • At level 17 the Form Shaper may assume the shapes of creatures of the outsider type.
    • At level 18 the Form Shaper may assume the shape of gargantuan sized creatures of any type that you can assume with shape form.
    • At level 19 the Form Shaper may assume the shape of colossal sized creatures of any type that you can assume with shape form.

Favored Shape: A Form Shaper can designate an amount of qualifying creature shapes equal to their intelligence modifier as a Favored Shape so long as they have at least one rank of knowledge in the skill appropriate for the creatureís type. Assuming a Favored Shape is a full-round action that does not provoke attack of opportunity, but a Form Shaper can choose to stay in that form indefinitely and may assume a particular favored shape as many times a day as they please. Changing a Favored Shape requires 8 hours of sleep to sharpen the mind plus an additional hour to pour over anatomical figures of the new form to dedicate it to memory. Only one Favored Shape may be changed per day. If afflicted by anything that lowers the characters intelligence modifier, they forget the favored shapes and must spend a day to prepare each one lost. At level 8, they may add their intelligence modifier as a Competence Bonus to all attack rolls while in a Favored Shape.

Shapechanger: A Form Shaper gains the Shapechanger subtype and retains it in all forms.

Spontaneous Shape: Starting at level 4 a Form Shaper may spontaneously assume the form of any qualifying creature shape without extensive study as a full-round action that does not provoke attack of opportunity. The Form Shaper can spontaneously assume such a form once a day plus the Form Shaperís constitution modifier of its true form. Making use of this ability requires a Knowledge Check against the creature to be assumed [Difficulty Class = 10 + Creatureís Challenge Rating] as a free action. Failure prevents the use of Spontaneous Shape for the rest of the round, but may be retried on the next round; but otherwise is free to act as if it never made the attempt. A spontaneously assumed shape lasts 1 hour plus the Form Shaperís constitution modifier.

Extraordinary Shape (Ex): Starting at level 7, the Form Shaper gains the extraordinary special qualities of any form they assume with Shape Form. In addition, your creature type and subtype (if any) change to match the new form (see the Monster Manual for more information) but abilities do not become non-abilities, though they retain the immunities otherwise granted by them.

Hastened Shape (Ex): Starting at level 8, Shape Form and its variants only consumes a Standard Action instead of a Full-Round action.

Lesser Supernatural Shape (Su): Starting at level 10, the Form Shaper gains one supernatural special attack or quality of any form they assume with Shape Form.

Improved Supernatural Shape (Su): Starting at level 12, the Form Shaper gains one additional supernatural special attack or quality of any form they assume with Shape Form for a total of 2.

Greater Supernatural Shape (Su): Starting at level 10, the Form Shaper gains another supernatural special attack or quality of any form they assume with Shape Form for a total of 3.

Reflexive Shape (Ex): At level 11, a Form Shaper can choose to assume the form of a Favored Shape as an Immediate Action even while flat-footed. Doing so consumes a daily use of Spontaneous Shape.

Shaper Metabolism (Ex): At level 11, a Form Shaperís mastery over their own body grants the Fast Healing 2 in any form they assume, even their base form. If the base form or assumed form already possesses Fast Healing then increase that value by 2. In addition, they can make a Concentration Check (DC15) to heal their body as a full-round action. On a successful check the Form Shaper heals 1 point of damage plus one point of damage for every point exceeding the base DC of the healing.

Spell Shape (Su): At level 13, a Form Shaper can emulate the Spell-Like or Psi-Like Abilities of any form they choose so long as the chosen creature can use that spell-like or psi-like ability. A Form Shaper can cast Spell-Like or Psi-Like Abilities based on a pool of daily charges thatís replenished after 8 hours or sleep or rest each day. A Formshaper has an amount of daily charges equal to twice its Charisma Modifier. A spell-like or psi-like ability that may be cast at will takes 1 charge. A spell-like or psi-like ability that has a daily limit of more than 1/day consumes 2 charges. A spell-like or psi-like ability that has a daily limit of 1/day or less (Such as 1/month) takes 4 charges. In addition, a Formshaper cannot emulate Spell-like or Psi-like abilities that have an experience cost component, even if the creature can normally cast such a spell.

Quickened Shape (Ex): At level 16, Shape Form and its variants only consumes a Move Action instead of a Standard or Full-Round action.

Infinite Variety (Su): At 20th level, a Form Shaper gains the ability to create completely imaginary forms whenever they assume a Favored or Spontaneous Shape by spending an additional Spontaneous Shape. To create an imaginary form, the Form Shaper chooses one of their shapes as a base form. The Form Shaper can then choose a single aspect of a second monster whose form they could assume using the Shape Form ability and add it to the first creature. The available options include the following.

    • Replace the base form's natural armor bonus with that of the second form.
    • Add the second form's movement modes.
    • Add one of the second form's natural attack types (with the appropriate reach), if the base form doesn't have that attack type already.
    • Add an extraordinary special attack of the second form.
    • Add an extraordinary special quality of the second form.
    • Replace one of the base form's physical ability scores, if both the base form and the second form are the same size category.

For example, if a young red dragon is the base form and a giant octopus is the second, a Form Shaper could add the octopus's eight tentacle rakes (damage 1d4 + Str bonus) to the dragon's available natural attacks.

    .
The earliest I've seen of a dragon gaining Huge size is 19HD (Red).
Allowing a character to become Huge at level 12 seems highly excessive to me.
Also, I completely agree with core that pre-epic characters shouldn't be able to exceed Hugh size at all (really bad call on the Wu-Jen's Giant Size spell, even if Personal range prevents too much abuse).

Several spells already allow you to accomplish a size above Huge. Polymorph and it's Ilk, as well as the prestige class the Master of Many Forms. Also worth noting that although dragons become huge far later, there are monsters with as little as 9 HD that are of huge size. This would allow one to assume the form of them.

    As I said, Wu-Jen's Giant Size - at level 16, and it's personal on a poor-BAB character.

Polymorph is broken and needs mitigating factors. See "Wild Shape and alteration" in post #4 (my overhaul codex) as an example how this could be achieved.

Yes, but you should ask yourself what those creatures can do compared to huge dragons.
Being able to change into a CR 13 creature at level 12 (when CR 13 means a balanced challenge for a solidly built 4 level-13-char group) is way too much.

. . . and much more (way too much).
