Default Fallen London 2 - "A Starveling Thread! A Starveling Thread!"

    Always look to love. Always.
Your "Fallen London" quality has increased to 2 - "A Starveling Thread! A Starveling Thread!"

Welcome to Fallen London, where the lumps are rubbery, the cats are gossipy, the hats are exceptional, and WARE SERPENTS. Ever since London got dragged by bats into the underworld, things just haven't been the same. Then again, other things haven't changed a bit. London is still very much London, it just happens to be additionally populated by a few devils, tentacled Rubbery Men, sentient Clay Men, and a variety of other colorful personages. It's a bit gloomy down here, but don't let that get your spirits down! The company's still great, and there's something for...everyone? Mostly.

Just don't go peeking down any wells.

(thread is for discussion of the browser-based game Fallen London)

Excellent! (I wanted to do a full rhyme proper, but there's a hard limit to thread title length.)

Personally, I think it would be better to be "The Starveling Thread", not "A Starveling Thread", as it is patterned after The Starveling Cat (despite the fact that there are multiple Starveling Cats).

Wellll, I finally did it. Sold my soul. For a Fabulous Diamond worth 312.50 echoes. The devils found my one weakness: items I don't have in my collection yet.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have three exact chronographs, several chests of medical instruments, a gold scale, two excellent psychometry students, a five year old child, a collection of spiders and a litter of puppies waiting for me. One needs to study this new state precisely. I'm especially interested if it's true that the soulless heart weighs less.

I started it accidentally, but intentionally did not progress it, nor did I take the first opportunity to get out for good. I feel like that kind of sums up my character's view of it: Seeing it as foolish to proceed, but afraid to burn his bridges in case he's wrong.

Crap, need to visit the Boatman to continue with Bag a Legend. My plan was to avoid that.
Is there a way to meet him without raising Wounds to 8? I'd like to hold on to my Horsehead Amulets ...

Oh, it's foolish. But, you know, meta reasons. It's a story and I haven't seen it yet. There's not much else to do except endless grinding, so I'd love to do it.

Iruka: I looked through the heart mirror at the carnival's house of mirrors. Sure, it raises wounds to 8, but it just took one action (and didn't cost a horse-head amulet, as it sends you to the river directly from that storylet, rather than the linked storylet from wounds reaching 8).

Eldan: Yeah, for meta-reasons, I left it open because I figured I might get bored with what already was out there.

EDIT: Anyone else find it weird how you always wind up in your lodgings after coming back from the dead, regardless of where you die?

Obviously, it helps to make death more troublesome, but I wonder if there's a lore reason for it too...

I'm not quite sure. When Feducci kills you, it talks about how the boatman comes to carry you away, so maybe the boatman comes to bear you away, so maybe he puts your body back in your house or something… Not sure exactly, then again, death is still one of the mysterious things, maybe it'll be explained, maybe it is simply for the pragmatic reason of making the river simpler on the code, instead of needing a different one with all the same stories for each place you die.

Technically, it wouldn't be impossible. You'd just have to transfer your Location Quality to an invisible Quality that persists when you die, then on the storylet that activates when your Wounds clear, you'd have an option that sets it back. But it's definitely simpler to just say "go back to your Lodgings". (I've played around with the StoryNexus engine a bit, so I have an idea of how they do things.)

Still, it involves a lot more complicated storylet creation, when nine times out of ten, it wouldn't matter, as traveling would be no more than a couple of clicks.

Corvidae, a gentleman of principle, generosity, and ruthless opposition to the damned inferno, its host of devils, and its damned weeds is at your service. I am open to social actions, and if anyone has a way to decrease wounds, that would we appreciated. Some sparing so that I end up with fewer would also not be amiss.

I finally beat Feducci! It took me more than a day (there were distractions and a trip to the Tomb Colonies), but I beat him. Now to really start preparing for my trip to the Polythreme and the Iron Republic. This may involve another trip to the Tomb Colonies.

Any advice for such a journey would, of course, be appreciated; I intend to hunt down the source of some objects of interest in the Polythreme, and maybe try and get a hat of sorts while I'm there. The Iron Republic... I have no idea what I'm going to be doing there.

Man, this Ambition is becoming the biggest moneydump. But a nifty item might be around the next bend.

Hah. For the Marvellous, I needed 77 coins, which one mostly got one at a time from opportunity cards. That's a money dump. Also, I think there were no special items to be got, only some damn good fluff and background on the other cities and the identities of their rulers.

I'm also so close to getting my M_ _ _ _ _'s B_ _ _ d back. Got all the raw materials, just need to draw the presumptuous opportunity card two more times.

Unless you have Ambition: Nemesis, I don't know of what you do there, besides get an Iron Republic Journal, and a bunch of really weird things, although I believe it is (or at least was), somehow possible to grind up both hedonist and austere without a cap, which I believe is how Nigel Overstreet got his so high, although I don't remember how it is done.

    Congratulations of your defeating Feducci.

The bounty for the Vake, according to the department of menace eradication, is 4 million echoes. Bag a Legend promises that, although I'm unsure if it'll deliver (or if it will, what Nemesis would give).

Ah, completely forgot about that. I always hunted the Vake to hunt the Vake.

In the beginning there where some items, not particularly useful but nice. I hoped there would be more as story progressed.

I kind of am doing that too, but Failbetter defines an Ambition as a very long story with huge rewards at the end. The items aren't too helpful, but are novelty items. Perhaps it'll give something else better as it progresses.
