Honestly, the German tendency to have a word for everything is overstated. Yes, they are technically words. But they are just made by sticking other words together. You can do the same in English, you just put a space between each word. Plus, most of those words that are commonly thrown around in those English articles as "German has a word for everything" words are quite rare, unusual, new or just made up to sound silly.

"Apfelbaum" is one a word in German. In English "apple tree" is two words. Oh my god, English has no word for a tree that has apples growing on it! Those silly English! They don't have the vocabulary to make any meaningful sentences about anything!

There is, they talk about going steady, a "serious" relationship, living together, engaged (or affianced.) All those are in between "Hey want to go to a movie some time" and "Do you take this man as your lawfully wedded husband?"

Then again, legal traditions in the US tend to lean toward "common-law marriage" at that point.
