I think Twipie could work out. It's not my favorite ship for Twilight, but I think it works.

Twilight provides something Pinkie desperately needs. Stability, logic, and well reasoned actions. In addition Twilight is also a critical thinker (when her own personal life isn't involved anyways) so she can simply keep Pinkie calm when she starts to go off the rails.

Meanwhile Pinkie provides something Twilight desperately needs. A source of chaos and relaxation. Somepony who can keep shaking things up in Twilight's life so that she doesn't just fall into a rut. Pinkie also provides emotional wisdom, an insight into other ponies that Twilight occasionally lacks. But most importantly, Pinkie provides a point of view that is keeping Twilight's interests first, because Twilight can have a tendency to focus on the greater good, sacrificing what's important to her in order to make things better/is a more practical choice.

As is, Twilight seems to be more patient with Pinkie then most of the Mane 6, and gives her advice to help Pinkie when she's struggling.

Twilight hasn't really expressed annoyance at that for quite a while, and even seems to enjoy/trust some aspects of it. (Depending on Pinkie Sense in it's about time, and happy about the perfect timing Party Letter in S4 E1)

Best example I think would be Twilight teaching Pinkie how to solve mysteries in the Mystery of Who Ate the MMM? But there are a few others as well (Like Twilight's advice to Pinkie regarding Cranky.)

Yeah, those are pretty much my reasons for liking them together. They complement each other well. While it might be difficult to get them started, they'd be remarkably stable.

I dunno, they've managed for a good four seasons, now. Really, I think it's something that could work. Twilight has more to her than simply being rational. She might get exasperated over Pinkie being Pinkie, but I doubt it would be enough to split them up because, realistically, it hasn't yet. Even in the show, we see that Twilight has come to accept Pinkie, randomness and all. Why would relationships change that?

True. Pinkie has also shown that she desires connections and friends, and has a worrisome tendency to go slightly bonkers when she thinks that ponies aren't happy with her or don't want to be with her. Twilight provides a grounding influence without being forceful or physical.

Not really, or rather it's not an example of rational logic, but a good one of emotional logic. Where she takes emotions inputted into a scenario, and judges the results on the emotions she gets back from the ponies she tries that tactic on. Most ponies don't react with a severe shutdown like Cranky did, so Pinkie judges it as a success and that pony as a new friend.

On a rational level it doesn't seem to make sense, because we consider friendship to be more then what we see Pinkie interact with the majority of the background ponies. We'd call them friendly acquaintances or something along those lines. A rational basis might also point out that Pinkie's feelings towards the Mane 6 are stronger then the baseline to everypony else, thus supporting the idea that the majority of background ponies are not truly 'friends'. Pinkie would argue that the Mane 6 were 'best' friends (yes all 5 of them at once) and that she's still friends with everyone else, and would simply cite her feelings as proof.

It doesn't mean that Pinkie's logic is useless, or even inferior to rational logic. (I just read a whole essay on the matter, emotional logic is pretty interesting stuff). But it does mean that Pinkie tends to reach conclusions based off of her own preexisting emotional state. Like worrying that all her friends are abandoning her in Party For One, despite rational evidence to the contrary, or that Pinkie clones are a good idea to get to multiple social events at once, even though rationally she's still only experiencing one event (IE, she doesn't experience what her clones do) and thus she didn't solve anything at all with her 'solution'.

Emotional reasoning doesn't mean that she's illogical, or even that she's irrational (though she can be both those things), it's just a different method to arrive at a conclusion, one that is different then rational reasoning. (and it can be just as effective, if not more so, then rational reasoning.)

That's one definition of logic. An other definition is a series of conclusions, each derived from the last. If this, then that, if that then that, etc etc.

If Pinkie has made most, if not all of her friends in that manner, and has yet to encounter someone as introverted as Cranky who thus could not be befriended in that manner, then her experiences support the conclusion.

"I've made most, if not all of my friends by doing X, and Y"

"I'm Friends with everypony in town"

"I've just done X and Y for this new person in town, so we should become friends now"

If Pinkie's experiences support statement 1, and we assume that, as far as Pinkie is concerned statement 2 is true(I think we can agree on that), then Pinkie assuming statement 3 is true is logical.

Of course, in this case her logic is flawed, but that's only because her experiences have caused her to not encounter anyone as introverted as Cranky, with whom such methods wouldn't work.

And considering how the episode ends, It's safe to assume that she's corrected the flaws in her logic.
