Re: Dresden Files III: You Want Gun Hand or Sandwich Hand?
I predict, now that he knows that Winter's purpose is fighting outsiders, he's going to learn more about his past, about being outsider-bane, and he's going to embrace that cause with every magical template he has.
And he'll whine and complain about being a monster for every second of it.

Part of me wants to see Harry learn how to be a Wereform, only for the "Dealing with the instincts of your new body" part of the training to alsom let him deal with the instincts that come with having the Knight's Mantle...

Not so much. Eb said LtW could help teach Harry to have patience with the awfulness of the White Council, and to cope with the destruction of things he loves.

Another thing to look forward to in the next book might be that, now that all these note immediate life-or-death situations are out of the way, Maggie can get to know Harry better and find out what a huge dork he is.

Re: Dresden Files III: You Want Gun Hand or Sandwich Hand?
But giving Michael his Grace wasn't subtle is my point here. I'm aware that it caused a lot of hidden knock on effects that were subtle and caused good results. However, the original act itself was just so blatent. I consider the giving of soulfire to be a good example of a subtle effect for the reasons I explained previously.
I dunno, it's probably just a matter of taste. I also thought the scene with Maggie was pretty meh and I haven't seen that echoed anywhere.
In-universe probably. I believe that JB could have written the book differently to do the same thing.
On another topic, I'm wondering if the wizards tech-damaging ability still works on tech powered by magic. If you used an electricity spell to power a computer, does it still malfunction? How close does your manipulation of magic have to be to mortal technology to start malfunctioning?

Re: Dresden Files III: You Want Gun Hand or Sandwich Hand?
Magic to heal does not work well enough to restore Michael to fighting form fast enough to save his life.
Also, nobody but the good guys and most likely the Big G know that Mr. Sunshine gave Michael his grace. Nobody would have realized if Uriel hadn't started bleeding, showing that he was mortal.
That's pretty Subtle.
Sides, he's the blasckops guy. His job is to ake care of problems via cheating and loophole abuse... Which is exactly what he did.
It's like giving Harry Soulfire-look small, has big consequences.

Being subtle is less important then doing the right thing.
This shows off how that while Mr. Sunshine might be in the same field as a lot of our sneaky manipulative types he is in the end operating on an entirely different frequency from guys like Vadderung or Mab.

Is it okay to kill Cat's for fun? What about Pixies? Neither of those have souls.
No. It's not okay to kill them for fun because they don't have souls.
The fact that they are invariably evil mother truckers and become so after embrace, that's what makes it okay to murder the carp out of them for the halibut.Last edited by Rater202; 2014-12-10 at 06:52 PM.

No, but only because of the following three reasons:
1. There are laws against that, while their are no sch laws against killing vampires
2. Killing a human is psychologically more damaging to you than killing a moving corpse that eats people.
3. An evil Human might not stay evil-An assassin could have a change of heart, retire, and spend the rest of his life doing nothing but good deeds-whereas an evil Black Court Vampire is born evil and dies evil irregardless.I also answer to Bookmark and Shadow Claw.

Re: Dresden Files III: You Want Gun Hand or Sandwich Hand?
So, I know Mauve Shirt's mentioned playing the Dresden Files RPG; has anyone else had any experiences with playing or running it? I finally got my brother to start reading the series ("I am loving the [excrement] out of Grave Peril," he says) and he's even more into tabletop roleplaying than I am, so, seems like it'd be a good fit. Of course, I imagine we'd still need to shanghai a few more people into it, but I know he does have at least one friend who had also suggested reading The Rollicking Fun Time Misadventures of Dresden Comma Harry, so probably just need one more unsuspecting lackwit to rope into it and then we'd be good to go. BUTT _)_) anyway, yeah, just kinda curious about the game. Anyone have any good stories vis-a-vis the thing I just said?

Huh, didn't realize that this thread had been restarted. Shiny.
I guess I'll reiterate that I loved Skin Games. I think the prediction that the next book will involve the White Council in some way is a good one. Undoubtedly, we will also so more of Harry's new child and of the Winter Fae.

Re: Dresden Files III: You Want Gun Hand or Sandwich Hand?
According to Tvtropes, Jim Butcher has said at book signings that "Peace Talks" will be between the White Council and the Vampire Courts, and will be "completely uneventful" so we know that Harry is going to burn down at least one house.
SpoilerThe same sources mention that Jim has said that the book after Peace Taleks, entitled "Mirror Mirror" is about a parallel version of the Dresdenverse. fans are already speculating that Harry's going to have to fight his evil duplicate from an alternate reality.I also answer to Bookmark and Shadow Claw.

Re: Dresden Files III: You Want Gun Hand or Sandwich Hand?
I'm really disappointed we haven't seen the White Council's response to Harry becoming the Winter Knight. Considering how big a deal diplomacy with Summer and Winter has been in the past, I don't understand how they haven't at least spoken to Harry.
Regardless of what they think about him, or a wizard in general, becoming the Winter Knight there should have been at least some interest on the part of the White Council. Even just to say, "Hi." and set up a way of contacting him.
Unless we're supposed to think the entire White Council doesn't know who the current Winter Knight is...Tarvek needs to die in a fire.

Re: Dresden Files III: You Want Gun Hand or Sandwich Hand?
In Cold Days, The Gatekeeper mentions that if both he and Harry survive the coming battle with the Outsiders, he'll inform the White Council that Harry is still alive and see if he can't get them to pull some strings to have him made "alive" in the eyes of the Law again.
Harry Spent the time between Cold days and Skin Game trapped on Demonreach, and if his friends couldn't contact him, why could the people who kinda sorta hate him?
I expect we'll see something of it in Peace Talks, if for nothing else then because it's supposed to have a Subplot about Harry taking up Listen-to-winds' offer to teach him stuff.I also answer to Bookmark and Shadow Claw.

Re: Dresden Files III: You Want Gun Hand or Sandwich Hand?
Peace Talks will be interesting I imagine. While it's clear to see the Vampire Courts negotiate with the White Council, I imagine that the rise of the Fomorian will be a hot button issue, if not involve them sending a rep to the mix. I mean, let's be fair, the Fomor seem to be having their servitors show up in new and interesting fashions in the pasts few books.
On the topic of Vampires, has anyone ever thought of what capacity Red Court survivors will be in? Because one of the things I've been thinking of ever since Changes was the very slim chance for the vampires led into the Erlking's domain are still alive. They were in the Nevernever when the big genocide ritual went off and it's not unthinkable that the Erlking or his goblins would draw out the vamp's existences by keeping them alive as a "trophy" since there's no more Reds elsewhere. Have one of them escape and suddenly, you end up with a character who has an origin story that would make sense in a Comic Book.Last edited by Almarck; 2014-12-31 at 01:50 PM.

Re: Dresden Files III: You Want Gun Hand or Sandwich Hand?
Assuming that they were'nt already killed when the Curse went off.
The Goblin's of the Wild Hunt have been described as Terminators from Krypton, and the Earlking being a Sidhe Goblim by defult has to be more badass than that.
Besides, the hides of the last Red Court Vampires are just as impressive as trophies as the vampires alive would be.I also answer to Bookmark and Shadow Claw.

Re: Dresden Files III: You Want Gun Hand or Sandwich Hand?
It's not the craziest theory. Leaving them alove as a trophy. I mean, the Welling does seem to keep finding reasons not to slaughter Harry and wear his skin as an awkward lanky coat. This may be because he kinda likes Harry though.
Would being in the Nevernever even protect you from a bloodlines curse, though? Seems like it'd kinda be a big hole in the plan if Ebenezer could've just avoided it by hiding out there, not that he would've. Man, I dig Ebenezer.Avatar by the one and only Ceika.

Re: Dresden Files III: You Want Gun Hand or Sandwich Hand?
You remember the Heart Ripper Curse from Storm Front? The Bloodline Curse is the same spell, just with a lot more juice and a more suitable target. Harry was relatively certain that hiding in the Never Never would have protected him when Sells tried to get him that way.
On the other hand, that was a sorcerer drawing power from a lightning storm, not a ritual powered by hundreds or even thousands of human sacrifices and prepared ritually by over a dozen vampires strong enough to convinvvingly pose as gods and cast by a very powerful wizard who was also suped up with Unseelie Magic who completed it with a willing sacrifice as opposed to a bunny.
It was probably a hella lot more powerful when harry turned it on the court, and Harry does have Fae magic now, being the winter night, and fae are equally if the Mortal World and the Never Never, so a Sidhe Knight casting the spell might well have let it slip the barrier between world if it's raw power didn't.
Or, in other words, "Hell, we ain't got no way of knowing."
I'm inclined to believe that their dead, if for no other reason than if the Earlking was keeping them alive, then that's the sort of thing he'd have mentioned at Harry's Birthday Party in Cold Days.I also answer to Bookmark and Shadow Claw.

Re: Dresden Files III: You Want Gun Hand or Sandwich Hand?
Yeah, guess that's one ("would the Nevernever have blocked the bloodline curse?") for the Reddit AMA file, if he does one of those again and I can both remember it and participate. Quasi-related tangent, I was at work when the Sleater-Kinney one was happening a few weeks ago, I was bummed out. Anyway...
I'm inclined to believe they're dead, just because ultimately, what good is a pet vampire anyway? And the Reds are disgusting bat monsters, you gotta feed 'em fresh blood every once in a while... but if the Erlking did keep some, volunteering free information about them just ain't the Faerie way.
Which reminds me, I thought one of the best quotes of Skin Game was Michael's remark on Faeries: "Never did get why they're such lawyers about everything." It's a good (implied) question.Last edited by Gnome Alone; 2014-12-31 at 09:01 PM.

Judging by Bombshells, Butcher's last short story in Dangerous Women, the Fomorians don't do negotiations. Spoilers for those who want to know:

Re: Dresden Files III: You Want Gun Hand or Sandwich Hand?
The Reds surviving only matters if Jim ever reveals an that one of them escaped later on and acts as an antagonist for Harry l. I mean let's be fair it's the sort of thing that would fit in with all of the shenanigans of the Dresdenverse. It's minor thiugh and unlikely to start or be meaningful unless he or she has the goal of rebuilding the Reds empire.
And that's good to know what molly did. So Fomor are probably not on the Accords yet? That seems like the sort of action to get them black listedI possess the Addicted to Editing flaw. I have edit my posts 3 seconds after posting them for 10 minutes.

Nope, they are Accord signatories. One tries to negotiate with Marcone under the Accords in the Even Hand short story. I'm not sure how they get away with stuff like this, but remember the Denarians are (were?) Accord signatories as well, and Shiro noted back in Death Masks that they were known for their treachery as well.

Well the Denarians ended up.... well we know what happened to Nicodemus for kidnapping 2 signatories. It took a few years but it's happened.
Same with the Reds. Though that was for a different reason.
Mab.... I think is probably listing them under her to do list which means she'll consider using Harry on them since the last few times worked so well... in other words they only got away with breaking them because it isn't time to wipe them out yet...

Re: Dresden Files III: You Want Gun Hand or Sandwich Hand?
IIRC, the Formor in the Dresdenverse consist of the Formor from Celtic myth and other creatures driven into the sea by the Fae(That's why they're fishy, they've adapted) and that a lot of Lovecraft's work was based on Formor*
That "Fae drove them into the sea" thing might have been a huge violation of the Accords-the Formor could well be at War with the rest of the Signatories or Something.
*Considering that the Mad Arab exists and was killed by the Gatekeeper, and that Lovecraft was killed because he know to much, and considering the sort of thing Lovecraft's best known stories covered, that probably means that the Formor have something to do with Outsiders.I also answer to Bookmark and Shadow Claw.
