"Let me see that rope," Sieghard said, having followed Elsa closer to the vent. He took Elsa's two lengths of rope and made sure they were tied together tightly. After taking a moment to survey the area a bit, he grabbed a stone and tied the end of the rope around it. He swung the rope around a few times before letting it fly.

The weighted rope sailed clumsily through the air, draping itself across one of the sulphur fires. Slowly, the section of rope exposed to the flames began to blacken and char, fibres snapping and curling in the heat. Sieghard waited until the rope looked properly alight before he began to pull it back, doing his best not to extinguish it by dragging it through the dust. By the time he had retrieved it the rope had burned through, leaving its stone weight behind and Sieghard with a frayed end of burning cord.

Adelbert had no rope to sacrifice and joined Ludo in keeping well away from the fumes. He was still in a very fragile state and had no desire to risk more injury if he could help it (he also had to keep a continued eye on Kaja.)

Snatching at his cloak, Viggo scowled darkly over it's tattered edge as he hurriedly covered his mouth and nose. "You might have bloody warned us a bit sooner." He mumbled sourly through the cloth.

Viggo was almost entranced by the smoking vents, they were like livid scars on an otherwise barren landscape and yet it seemed to him that they were the only thing which came close to beauty in these desolate parts. Close enough anyway, except that if you breathe in you're likely to drop down sodding dead!

He was disappointed by Elsa's rather mundane method of setting the rope on fire, he'd half expected her to start tossing fire around again or some such. He looked back over his shoulder at Adelbert and Ludo, shrugging in a somewhat crestfallen manner, turning back to the others he asked Elsa, "That's it is it? Set a rope on fire and we're done?"

Taking care to keep his makeshift mask in place, Viggo nodded emphatically at Ludo's evaluation. "Either that or we'll run into a bloody army of greenskins no doubt." He made to add a chuckle to his jape but it turned into a cough as he accidentally swallowed a corner of his cloak.

"Speaking of which," he sidled over to Markus, "Word back in town is that the greenskins are acting like an ant hill that took a good kicking, you seen much of that on your travels?" He questioned their taciturn guide, "What about the Mirino road, did the Commander ever do anything about the farmstead that got raided a few weeks back?"

"I don't know anything about the Mirino road," said Markus, who was sitting on a rock some way back, watching the rope-throwing antics with a kind of detached curiosity. "Mostly I stick to the valley. The greenskins don't like crossing these hills."

"Word in the Thornwood is that they're ranging further north than ever. I've seen prints. Wolf riders, mostly." He took a frugal swig from his water-skin. "Evatt's patrols couldn't keep out a stray dog."

Viggo raised an eyebrow at that, so far every word he'd heard spoken about Evatt's men seemed to be disparaging about their ability to protect his people. "Why is that do you think?" He asked Markus, "I saw the Commander and some of his knights just yesterday evening, it looked to me like they knew which end of a sword to hold and how to swing it?"

A thought occurred to the young lad, "And if his patrols are so lousy, why don't folk just scuttle to Mannaan's Keep for protection until the green buggers calm down again? If it were a choice between losing my home or my head, I know which I'd sodding choose!"

    "Nice job, Sieghard!"

With a triumphant grin, Elsa ceremoniously used the burning end of the rope to light her storm lantern, then put out the rope under her boot. As soon as they got back to Manann's keep, it might be worth it to acquire one or two additional vessels for the flame, like candles or torches, in case the lantern went out.

"Maybe if Evatt thought the orcs were in league with the Azrilites?" Adelbert suggested dryly. His expression grew more worried. "I don't think the orcs are completely brainless but they are impatient. Evatt should try raiding their territory to provoke a response. If he doesn't they'll attack when they're ready."

"You should tell him that, when you see him," said Markus, his tone making it very clear how little interest he had in matters of strategy. "Me, I hunt rabbits."

Climbing down off his rock, he stretched his limbs. "You got what you came for?" he asked, without any real care for the answer. "We should make camp somewhere far from those flames."

True to his word, he led them to a sheltered cleft between two rocky ridges, far enough from the vents that the stink of the fires was only a slight whiff on the breeze. While Ludo did his best to make sure Stoutheart couldn't drink from the depleted stream that trickled through the centre of the gully, the others settled down to get what rest they could on the sharp and stony ground.

Even in the relative comfort of her tent, Elsa found it hard to get to sleep on what was essentially a bed of gravel. With the flap of the tent open, a plentiful supply of oil in the lamp, and the precious flame flickering a foot or two from her face, she slowly drifted into sleep.

When she slept, her dreams were more troubled than they had been since the desert road. She dreamed of dry voices, unfamiliar syllables rustling like whispers on the wind. She dreamed of shattered domes and towers, of a freezing mist that oozed through silent city streets, with the baleful eye of Morrslieb riding high in the night sky. She dreamed of terrified screams, and the face of a beautiful woman set in a mask of cold disdain.

She woke in a cold sweat, despite the heat that still lingered in the ground. The flame in the lantern still burned beside her, but her dreams had fled.

"You got what you came for?"

"Ooooh yes, we did," breathed Elsa, cradling her storm lantern like a newborn child.

On an impulse, she reached out with her magical sense at the flickering flame inside the lantern, curious to know whether Aqshy was more potent around fire from a volcano; there had to be a reason why Miss Fassbender would not be satisfied with any other kind of fire. Elsa spent the rest of the evening in a cheery mood that bordered on euphoria. It was not going to last.

The next morning, Sieghard awoke to find that Elsa had nestled against him at some point during the night; seemingly more out of fright than fondness. Her forehead glistened with sweat and her lips moved in her sleep. She finally emerged from her dreams, pale and drawn.

"Nath," she whispered with a shiver.

When she noticed how close she had gotten to the mercenary, she looked as if she was about to pull away from him in embarrassment.

    She did not.

In between his attempts to raise spirits he spoke softly with the others, he struggled to shake the feeling of being bleakly subdued by their surroundings.

Whilst doing his best to enjoy the plain fare provided by his dry rations, he questioned Markus once more. "So you said you mainly stick to the valley eh? Ever heard of two brothers who lived out that way years back, Griswold the older one was called?" Viggo snapped his fingers trying to recall the unfortunate younger brothers name. Truth to be told, she had a bit of... intellectual curiosity about the book, and would not mind leafing through it a bit if they ever found it. But she would not risk her friends' lives just to satisfy that curiosity.

    Marktag, 24th Pflugzeit

It took them a full day to make their way back to Manann's Keep, though the walk was not as tiring as it had been on the way out, being mostly downhill this time. As they returned to the fertile lowlands of the Lost Vale, Elsa felt a subtle pressure lift from her mind, as if a sound so constant she had grown accustomed to it had suddenly fallen silent.

Reaching Evatt's stronghold, they said their goodbyes to Markus, paid him the remainder of his fee, and sought out Magnus in the stables. With evening closing in fast, they spent the night in town before setting out for Painford in the morning.

    Bezahltag, 26th Pflugzeit

Two days on the forest road saw them back to Painford, arriving in the village square around noon under thin clouds and blue skies. The village still appeared to be intact; no ravaging Norscans had appeared out of the trees to put it to the torch.

Elsa had kept her lamp close to her at all times, and though she had burned through a great deal of lamp oil the precious flame was still alight. Heading directly to Fassbender's tower, she found herself welcomed in with open arms.

“You brought it,” said Beatrix, the usually dignified wizard now seeming full of pent-up energy. As the lamp was placed on the table in the centre of her circular study, she crouched down so that her eyes were level with the flame. “The real thing. Thank you!”

Darting across the room, she scaled a rickety ladder to pull a heavy-looking book down from one of the shelves. A disturbed Ortolanus hissed and slithered noisily away from where he had been sleeping on top of that row.

“As we agreed,” said Beatrix, pressing the book into Elsa's hands. “I hope you find this useful. I should warn you, though, this is not College magic.” Her hand lingered for a moment on the spine, as if still reluctant to let go of the book. “The author was what the Altdorf authorities would call a talented hedge wizard... although that name would be a disservice. Learned men will always find ways to belittle the things they don't understand.”

Opening the tome, Elsa saw the letters were faded, the vellum pages cracked and yellowed. Written in a spidery hand were the words:

    Liber Immanis Pyrum
    Tubal de Montfort

The following pages were filled with a dense Classical scrawl – the explorations and experimentations of a man dabbling in the Wind of Aqshy before the age of Magnus and the Colleges. There were diagrams, incantations – whoever this Tubal was, he seemed to have made considerable strides on his own. That being said, there had obviously been flaws to his research – the back third of the heavy grimoire had been fused into a single, charred lump.

“You can return it whenever is most convenient for you,” said Beatrix, her attention swinging back to the lantern and its contents. “If you'll excuse me, I must take this to my laboratory. The flame must be transferred without delay.”

Elsa was as thrilled about the book as Beatrix Fassbender had been about the flame. She held the tome reverently, careful not to strain the spine, but flipped the pages with unrestrained hunger, her eyes darting here and there all over the ancient writing.

I guess I don't get to mock Adelbert as a bookworm anymore.

"I don't care who wrote it, only what they wrote. If it's by a hedge wizard, so much the better; no secrets of the trade. I've always thought the crusty old wizards at the Colleges were keeping the best knowledge for themselves. Afraid the students will become the masters."

But the alchemist was already gone.

"Thank you so much!" Elsa called after her. "I'll return the book, I promise."

Shaking with anticipation, she set out to find a place to read, but stopped herself; she still had one thing to ask, and this might be her last chance. She poked her head into Beatrix's laboratory with a coy grin: "Any chance you can tell me what you need this fire for? Just curious."

Adelbert was relieved to reach Mannan's Keep, though a reluctance to spend more than he had to made him opt to sleep in the common room (he sometimes suspected his companions forgot how narrow his finances were compared to theirs.)

The following morning he checked his wounds to see how he was healing before setting out.

At Painford he made his way to the Hostel for drink and food and to gossip. He decided it was time to take a leaf out of Viggo's book and try and impress fair village maidens with tales of his daring against the barbarians in Ravenskird. "The she-wolf was as so close to me I might have reached out and stroked her muzzle. I could feel her eyes upon me and knew my only chance was to hold my ground..."

(Naturally he sent Kaja off before this to play with the village children.)

    Sieghard

Seeing what Adelbert was up to, Sieghard decided he could at least help add a bit of grandeur to the tale. The scribe didn't seem to understand how to make a good story.

"I'm surprised you were able to fight so well after seeing what the wolf woman did to that big one," Sieghard said. He turned to the girl Adelbert had been talking with and added "Snapped his leg in two with her jaws. Didn't think anyone would be able to stand up to that monster." Turning back to Adelbert, he continued "Dunno if it was quick thinking or just good fortune, but it was good you blinded the wolf when you did. Even better it ran off afterwards. Doubt we could've taken that thing even with only one good eye."

"Have fun, Schreiber. You owe me one,"

    Elsa

The windows of Fassbender's annexe laboratory were shuttered, leaving the room in the dark. Fassbender herself was crouched over a stone hearth in the centre of the room, using a long taper to transfer the fire from the lamp to the great mound of coals that was waiting for it. As the crackling orange glow spread from the firepit, Elsa saw the apparatus surrounding it - straw-padded crates full of hastily-cleared glassware, a pair of carefully-balanced scales, the glitter of Adelbert's tools. A crucible of black iron hung over the fire, its rim carved with arcane symbols whose meaning escaped her.

Standing up, Fassbender gave Elsa a look. She had already donned her blacksmith's apron, and was even now fishing a piece of chalk out of one of its pockets. "No," she said, firmly. "No, there is not." Striding over the door, she blocked the way. "I am sorry, Fraulein Holt, but this is very sensitive endeavour. You have what you came for." She paused, trying to think of a polite way to turn her visitor away. The Gold College had always been terrible with people. "I must have no distractions."

A steam-kettle hiss from the level of Elsa's ankles alerted her to the presence of Ortolanus behind her. Stepping out of the lizard's way, she watched it slither sinuously past her into the laboratory - and then the door closed in her face.

From behind the closed door, Elsa heard the scritch, scritch of chalk being dragged across the floor. A protective circle, probably - in which case, whatever Beatrix was planning, she wasn't completely confident it was going to work.

Down in the village, Adelbert was having surprising success spinning his exaggerated stories of the events in Ravenskird - even if the details did seem a little muddied. He soon had a rapt audience of two young women, both reasonably good-looking in a rural sort of way, and one rather cynical-looking old man listening from a distance.

Elsa did not take long to join her friends at the inn, but seemed too enraptured by the contents of her book to take part in the conversation, and spent her time there reading in a corner. She neglected to even order a drink.

    Adelbert Schreiber

Adelbert exchanged a thankful look with Sieghard before turning back to his audience. "Yes the wolf woman was a fearsome foe." He lowered his voice, as if imparting some dark and wolfish secret. "Yet she has not so fearsome as her master Rorik, a man of the war north where they worship pagan gods and use the skulls of their foes as drinking vessels. I will not lie I thought my end had come, for I had lost my sword in battle and taken so many wonds I could hardly stand. I couldn't sneak away though, I had to return for my apprentice Kaja."

He took a long sip of ale and smiled, fondly. "A braver lad there never was, he's seen off goblins and barbarians and the dangers of the road from Mirino to Savonne yet he is more than a head shorter than you Fraulein. Yet that is the life of an adventurer. I am priest by trade of the great goddess Verena...," he paused, hesitating, then for Verena was a goddess of honesty. "Or I shall be when I finish my training. That was why I was bound for savonne in the first, to seek an audience with the priest. Yet let me tell you of the wonders of that city... and the dangers."

He proceeded to tell the village girls (and the elder if he was still listening) of his encounters with the sinister Johannes Klammenberg, who in Adelbert's retelling was strongly hinted to be a sorceror or a vampire.

    Viggo Hirtzel

After a day or two of stale boring road rations Viggo was very happy to get a proper meal into him, even if the fare at the Hostel wasn't as fine as The Star offered, it was still better than cured strips of unidentified meat which tasted like old boot. Viggo watched Adelbert's attempts to woo, first with amusement and then with growing irritability. How come he's not getting a bloody slap!? His face grew darker and darker as it became obvious that the objects of the scribes' affections were clearly enjoying his company.

Refusing to having anything to do with Adelberts' storytelling he sulkily edged away from his friends. "You don't see me running around bloody... scribing things... do you?" He huffed. Bloody women! Happy to listen to this tripe, but if I ask for a quick bloody squeeze.....

The more elaborate Adelberts' yarn became, the more Viggo found himself grinding his teeth in frustration. The songs he played that evening mirrored his mood and whether played on flute or lute the tune had a mournful dirge like quality.

"Maybe if you were attacked by wolf-women they'd listen more." Ludo said happily. He was enjoying the rest, and trying not to think about the smoke rising from Ravenskird.

"Ah, Jarl Rorik was a truly terrifying man," Sieghard said as Adelbert took his drink, "As big as his wolf woman was, the the Jarl himself made her look like a mere pup. Biggest man I've ever seen, carrying an axe as big as my whole body and wielding it with just one hand." He leaned in closer and spoke a bit quieter "Have you ever seen an ogre? I swear the Jarl was near as big, though he wasn't fat like them. Nothing but muscle wrapped in iron and furs. Completely human, so far as I could tell, though I wasn't about to get any closer to him than I had to. Those northerners are funny though," he said. "Some turn into wolves, and some are just bigger and stronger than any man has a right to be, and I've heard stranger things though I thank the gods that I've not seen such horrors with my own eyes."

Sieghard is only involving himself in this to help Adelbert out and play wingman. He'll continue to add how own exaggerated or made up details to whatever stories Adelbert chooses to tell and generally trying to make Adelbert look good.

That said, with an audience of two, he can't exactly refuse telling some of his own exploits.
    (1d100)[45] vs 15 untrained charm.
Success or failure really doesn't concern him all that much though.
