So I had my first adventurer trying to conquer my lands today.
Panicking i borrowed 300 golds to pay people to support my assassination plot...
TUrns out that was not really necessary. Moron tried to invade Sweden with a huge host of 3200 men. So my marchal beat him with his hand tied behind his back.

(Hearing stories of Adventurers coming with hosts of 30 000 men or more)

So I had to expel the Jews to get my money back (that I had borrowed from them in the first place). Good thing I am zealous, so it was kind of natural for me to throw them out anyway.

You don't actually ever need to pay the Jews back. IIRC the penalty for banishing them is actually a lot worse than the penalty you suffer for having the loan out.

True, but if you don't pay the loan back you can never take out another one. Except from Holy Orders, and they're stiffer about getting their money back.

It's never actually let me take money from them (something about needing to have 500 gold before I can take 500 gold). What are the terms for those loans?

I know that. Lage III did not.
I try to roleplay to at least a degree.

The chaste king finally got a son, but he has already raised his daughter as a king. So queen it is! (next generation). Lage III is only 40 years old... a benefit if you survive the early years if you become king as a child is that you get to play a ruler from the age of 16. Nice, for a change.

Yeah, the Jewish loan just takes money out of nowhere, but the holy orders have to have money to lend out.

You don't get any penalties for borrowing from them, but if you take too long to pay them back they will ask for land to build castles or for your kids to enlist as repayment.

Got Way of Life, figured I'd go for the Buddhist Super-Science combo of Scholarship and, well, Buddhist Super-Science (that sweet +4/+5). Instead my starter had a martial focus, so instead I went with hunting. Even in CK2, dogs can tear at your heart strings.

Doesn't Learning not do very much anymore? Ever since they redid Technology so that your Martial affects your military tech, etc.

Learning is indeed still relevant for technology.

    i believe the algorithm is:

    (0.04 *(Learning + Skill) * RankBonus) + BuildingBonus.

Learning affects all your techs, so if you have good learning and good Stewardship/Diplomacy/Martial you can really start raking in the tech points.

I think that's largely because Technology isn't really as useful in CKII as in say EUIV. It ticks up on its own, so it's pretty hard to fall too far behind that you have a distinct disadvantage and in general it just gives you bonuses to things instead of any kind of massive advantage.

Heh, and not to mention the old CIV games, where you could cripple the AI completely by say blocking it's access to pottery, or the wheel, which meant it never could advance past stone age...

I'm not actually that impressed with Charlie. It adds an older start date and kind of a mini scripted campaign that comes with being Charlie himself and then one of the Karlingblob as it fractures, but if the Old Gods start date was a psuedo-historical mess, the Charlie one is that times a hundred.

Also, way too many blobs and you can't start out as Scottish.

Way of Life I'm actually pretty fond of, the focuses it adds are thoroughly overpowered (and Intrigue focus can just get friggin' silly) but it makes more flavor, more drama and also if I'm the Serene Doge from age 22 to age 82, I will actually get better at business.

It substantially reduces the impetus to breed for god-rulers.

Also, ways to acquire Friends, Enemies and Lovers at non-random.

    WoL yes, Charlie no.
As said, intrigue is absolutely OP.
Especially in an elective monarchy. Once I was 2nd in line to the throne. Kidnapped heir, assassinated liege, executed new liege and boom! All hail the King. Plus I got 'the Spider' as a nickname.

Open question: Are there any lines in CK2 you won't cross? Whether for cheese/moral/storytelling/hilarity reasons?

For me, the suicide decision makes me very, very uncomfortable (rightly so, I think) as someone who wrestles with depression and whose family/partner/friends wrestle with depression. I understand why it's there, and I do understand its place in storytelling and character focus, but it makes me super uneasy.

It doesn't help when a lot of people are suddenly happy that their character is depressed so that the suicide decision can be taken at the earliest player convenience. The meta of that attitude sends shivers down my spine.

    Suicide decision?

Anyway, I have only executed prisoners twice. Both with the same character.
First his nephew murdered his brother (the nephews father) which he was best friends with, they have had a 100 / 100 relationship since kids, even though they weren't twins). He took the Kinslayer hit because he was so furious. A year later a duke attempted to murder his wife, the queen...
Going after his family, personally, was NOT acceptable.

No, dying of depression is without comitting suicide. When someone commits suicide it'll actually say 'xyz died at age abc. He commited suicide.'
