Sunday
Moonday
MarsDay
MercuryDay
JupiterDay
VenusDay
SaturnDay
or are some of the planets to close to the real days of a week?

Re: Core Component
What about replacing 'day' with something else?
Like...
Sunta
Moonta
Marsta
Mercuta
Jupita (heh)
Venta
Saturta
For example.
(Is a lame example, I'm sure someone can come up with something.)
Also, chopping off the ends of the more awkward ones could help as well (see above for examples.)I go by they/them/their or he/him/his pronouns

Re: Core Component
Alternative, non planet-based idea list:
Jakobsmoon
Molkim
Northwatch
Luna
Aethdar
Miresmoon
Krisdent
Or something like that. I dunno.
Real question, though: What would you guys think of a sunset to sunset calendar instead of a midnight to midnight or sunrise to sunrise calendar?

Re: Core Component
Sorry, I didn't catch the reference to Nova being in the Summer. I placed it at the beginning of the year because Nova comes from the Latin word for new. For the record, I imagine Nova being more like February than January (assuming you live in the northern hemisphere.) Zenith and Nadir are meant to be June and December respectively (the longest day of the year is in the month of Zenith, and the shortest is in Nadir.) The word Nova also refers to a star exploding, so it could just as easily be placed after Zenith, and we could make Advent the first month of the year.
Here's a rearrangement of the calendar, with some notes about where I imagine the seasons changing during the year.
01 -- Advent -- Spring begins in this month
02 -- Somber
03 -- Ardor
04 -- Welkin -- Summer begins in this month
05 -- Zenith -- The longest day of the year is in this month
06 -- Nova
07 -- Atropos -- Autumn begins in this month
08 -- Gault
09 -- Tumulus
10 -- Bastille -- Winter begins in this month
11 -- Nadir -- The shortest day of the year is in this month
12 -- Solace

Re: Core Component
Reporting in to say I'm still here, or Scarlett is at least.
I very much like BourgeoisJerry's calendar, and if it's used Scarlett will have been born in Nadir, on the shortest day of the year. The only slight disconnect I have there is that Somber sounds like a late autumn or winter month to me, rather than spring. It gives me an image of darkness and cold and the end of things, rather than new life. Tumulus sounds more spring-like, where all the weather is a bit chaotic and everything is growing.
*shrugs* I may be making to much of it though?
I would also probably forget a sunset to sunset cycle, unfortunately.

Re: Core Component
Yes it did. Though to be fair it looked like Latin so argentum had already occurred to me before I made the semi-joking guess about the Ardennes. And the modernized/Anglicized form "argent" made me think of the word "ardent" which leads right to the answer if you bother to look at the etymology in a dictionary, so my next guess would have been some weird Medieval Latin (or something) spelling of ardentis anyway.
Great name though, I am a fan of cleverly working in multiple layers of meaning into things.

Re: Core Component
I put it in early Spring rather than Winter because Somber and Solace sound so much alike, and I don't want them next to each other. Somber is basically supposed to represent the world slowly coming to life, while still showing signs of winter, but I could find a new name if it's a problem.
Tumulus and tumult aren't actually related, at least not as far as I know; they do both have roots in the Latin, so it's possible the Latin words are etymologically related. But either way, Tumulus doesn't actually relate to chaos.
Tumulus : an artificial hillock or mound (as over a grave); especially : an ancient grave : barrow
The narrative isn't really important, but it gave me a framework on which to build, making this much easier for me than it would have been if I was just trying to pick out random cool-sounding words to match Nova and Zenith.

Re: Core Component
Well with bigstipidfighte replying by PM I think I've gotten a check in from everyone except demonhunter. Of course bigstipidfighte needs to clear space in their inbox. In fact, everyone please make sure you have some space in your PM boxes. *looks at a few people in particular*

Re: Core Component
I don't think I've had more than 5 PM's total since I joined, so no issues there.
Also, as I have no imagination regarding names and naming conventions, I decided to avatarise my character for the game instead.
Damn, the cracks in her skin really don't work well that small, she just looks a bit grubby.

Re: Core Component
I am sending out role PMs now.
Edit: All PMs sent, if you didn't get yours or have some other issue please inform me asap.
Please re-read the rules, especially the Private Communications section and don't forget to make a spell queue!
Also if everyone could please tell me their character's birthday in their QTs that'd be beneficial. On a related note I will be choosing the starting month/date of the game by rolling dice, so there's no incentive for any particular birthdate unless you can see the future. And assuming this isn't just a bluff to get you to think about your character's a bit more before the roleplaying starts.Last edited by Ramsus; 2015-02-15 at 12:26 AM.

Re: Core Component
My day names are based on the seven days of creation from the Bible. Basically, there's light day, cerulean day (sky/sea,) land day, sunrise day, fish/bird day, human day, sabbath day. I do like the sound of the latin word for day better than the English, but that word is spelled the same way our word 'die' is, and I figured a name like Mortisdie could easily be misunderstood. Maybe we could use 'dia' as a suffix? We could also use 'lux,' but Lumenlux would be kind of a weird name.

Re: Core Component
Well I had already added IamL's day name suggestions to the first post, but if you guys still want to come up with stuff that's fine. Though I'll still have to make a final selection before the first Light Phase starts. I too prefer things that don't end in day.

Re: Core Component
I suppose the suffix could easily just be dropped, leaving us with Lumen, Caerulus, Tellus, Ortus, Miluus, Mortalis, and Hebdomas. But IamL's names are also fine, at least for the most part.
I'm just offering these up as a possible alternative because I personally find his names a bit odd. We've got Jakobsmoon, Luna, and Miresmoon (apparently we really like moons,) three words that seem like they might have been made up (though there is a company named Molkim that deals with "industrial solutions,") and Northwatch. If the names were all moon related or all made up words I wouldn't take issue, but the days just seem a bit too eclectic for my tastes.
But if you like his names (which seems to be the case,) there's no need for you to switch to a different set just because I like to over think things. The names sound cool, and the things I'm concerning myself with really don't matter in the grand scheme of things.

Re: Core Component
So Duck just pointed out to me that I'd said there were only going to be 6 days in the week yet somehow we got lists of 7. So unless anyone has another preference I'll be dropping Jakobsmoon from the days.

Re: Core Component
Just so people are aware of how we're progressing, I've gotten birthdays from a little over half the players and spell queues from only a small number of people. And there was some confusion apparently, so just to be clear, spells should be flavor ideas not mechanical effects. Such as a fireball or grease spell and maybe a bit of detail on those, not "a bane spell" or "a bonus voting power spell".

Re: Core Component
Still not feeling particularly clear. Do you not want any suggestion, whatsoever, as to a what a spell might do mechanically? Or do you just want to make sure there's a flavor aspect? Giving people a bunch of spells with effects vastly different from what they imagined isn't an exiting idea for me.
If you're going that route, do we at least find out what a spell does after researching it?
Learning fireball and having no idea whether it's a better voting spell, a night-action damage spell, or a conjure flaming ballroom spell would not, for me at least, improve the game.
Combining that last kind of fireball with a Grease spell that gives everyone flammable 50s hairdos would be especially bad.
