GitP BBMC Final VI: Brillanté vs. Derk's Seductive Strut Play-By-Play

Spoiler
Show

Good day there sports fans! We're here at the sixth GitP Blood Bowl Final where we have two great teams lined up for the coin flip. On one side are the wood elves of Brillanté, and on the other the underworld side of Derk's Seductive Strut. Brillanté has won the toss and elected to receive. Thrower John Louis War picks up the ball and is looking unusually formidable today. Could it be that Brillanté has Waity Darkbeard on the training staff today? No time to answer, War is breaking left and already the ball is in the air! It's going to Salvat, and Salvat hauls it in. Quick dodge and he's free, TOUCHDOWN! Brillanté is first on the board!

DSS' only consolation after that is that they'll have plenty of time to fight back. The kick is up, and DSS thrower Pazz Thubbock has the ball. He brings the ball up the left wing but the elves are moving to interdict. DSS counterattack is falling flat, more elves moving in but Pazz is still up. Nuffle must have it out for the skaven because the elves are winning this blocking battle on luck alone! Pazz is in trouble, and he's taken down. Brillanté catcher Betty grabs the ball- A block by Kowen lays him out! Mist charging on the ball, she scoops it up, quick dodge- another dodge, and she's away! Mist crosses the goal line, TOUCHDOWN BRILLANTÉ! The elves jump out to a commanding lead.

And now we step into the second half. The Strut are receiving the ball, and all is not lost- but what's this? The kick is shallow and the bouncing ball falls right into the hands of stormvermin Stinger. He looks as shocked as anyone as the elves begin to close in. They're swarming him and he's calling for help- the job he usually is the one to perform! Kowen's too far away but here comes Pazz Thubbock. There's the block- and a casualty! There's another- Pazz soars through the air with a flying kick to deliver a second!

Stinger trying to make room, but too many teammates are tied down elsewhere, here comes the blitz- and Mist lays down Stinger! Salvat rushes over for the recovery and dodges away. Fends off a blitz and he's loose, Salvat rushes in for the third Brillanté touchdown!

Derk's Seductive Strut are looking quite dejected by now. What happened to Crow and Selene? The Strut have to be feeling somewhat betrayed right now, having to adjust to new management at the most critical point of the season. Here comes the kickoff, and Pazz Thubbock fields the ball again. He breaks right, and the rats on the wings and the line are blocking up a storm! Nuffle has taken mercy on DSS and Pazz is advancing upfield with impunity. So this is what it looks like when skaven block! Pazz is loose and there's nobody around to stop him but for Mist! He beats back Mist, and he's in! Touchdown Strut! At least it isn't a shutout now!

The Brillanté sideline is buzzing and the elves look upset. John Louis War appears to be in a steroid-fueled rage as the wood elves take the field for the kickoff. Ball is up, and Louis has it deep in his own territory. Salvat is going deep and War is charging ahead. Milkteeth and Mist comes to break Salvat free, he's open, the pass is up- He's got it! He sprints away, the only thing between him and the endzone being the clock. He makes it! Salvat scores!

A new final team and individual scoring record to boot! The wood elves of Brillanté are your sixth GitP Blood Bowl Manager Cup Champions! The elves are ecstatic as the underworld side heads for the locker rooms. We have players all in one place, some at their pinnacle, and others whose future has never been so uncertain. A DEVASTATING victory for Brillanté, who just earlier in the season were decimated by this underworld team- Well now they have their revenge, and on the league's biggest stage! Congratulations, you damned dirty elves! Congratulations!

Your #1 source for blood bowl.

It's end-of-season graph time. First, we start with the median graphs. These have a red line though the middle that indicates the median offensive output for teams throughout the season. On offense, each time a team's line stretches above the red line, they had an above average output for that match. On defense, each line that stretches past the red line indicates a dismal defensive performance.

Offensive Medians

Defensive Medians

Playoff Marketshare

This is the graph that successfully predicted last season's Cup Champion. It is derived via a composite stat that measures a team's ability to play better than average blood bowl on a consistent basis. The percentage indicates each team's projected chance to rise to the occasion and win the Cup Final.

Win Quality

This graph is a bit more focused than playoff marketshare. Each team in the league is given a difficulty value, with the number on the graph representing the combined difficulty values of each team the subject has defeated. Teams with a higher win quality have proven that they can take on and defeat the great teams in the league. Teams with low win quality are likely to have padded their schedule with wins against inferior teams.

Helpful Halfling Hut

The random flailing of Clarkson has been failing to stop the hemorrhaging of touchdowns against them, and Treeman's Triumph have fallen to last place in the rankings through both divisions. They would be seeded much better, because the bottom is rather close together. Of course, Clarkson had to mess it up, and point out that Bloomberg was on the field. Though the fact that people didn't notice during the match is rather impressive, considering her size.

Needless to say, Bloomberg is not happy. She was obviously ready to play, and making the team replay the match when all the halflings were already sore from their previous game was just cruel.

In other news, Triumph is looking forward to seeing how many goblins are injured this week.

Spoiler: Mid-Season Report
Show
Mid Season Report

As we enter All-Star Week, home of one of the best matches of the season (Where Clarkson would be surprised if there weren't two Treemen holding the line of scrimmage for division B, a turnaround from past seasons where Division B hasn't had too many Big Guys) as well as the best time for fans of senseless violence (for those who don't enjoy Treeman's Triumph's games enough), it's time for a look at the teams and how they've preformed. And contrary to last season, the results for Clarkson's team (probably) won't all be We Suck!

Offense

About as well as could be expected. Over the course of seven games we've put up five points. One from Bloomberg, three from a Star Player, Morg n Thorg, and even one from a halfling! Who cares if he happened to be a werewolf at the time, a point is a point. Expect Clarkson to put a bit more emphasis on offence as we start going up against more rookie teams who either don't have big guys, or whose big guys don't have block or higher than usual strength.

Defense

A lot better than expected. We've held high scoring teams to only a few points, and when we actually score the defense really shines allowing us to have a win and two ties. While twelve touchdowns let in normally wouldn't be something to write home about when 9/11 of your players are weaker than the opposition it's not that bad. While we likely won't be able to bring both Deeproot and Morg to any more games together, just having three players who are stronger than just about anyone else will help a great deal.

Cookery

Our resident Chef has been messing up a lot of teams, and has never cooked a complete flop of a pre-game meal. That said, she's never produced a masterpiece either.

Development

Slow. Really slow. That probably isn't a bad thing though, since it allows us to get more inducement cash. Still, only three members have learned something new, and none of it has been too special.

Star Players

Triumph has definitely been getting their money's-worth here. Deeproot is making a run for Bull's casualty record, and Morg has put up more touchdowns than the rest of the team combined. They're kind of overshadowing the actual team members, but that's a price you have to pay.

Overall

Triumph has been preforming better than I think anyone expected. That said, we're going into a time when we'll be getting less inducements, and will be playing away more than at home. Clarkson is actually thinking of bringing Triumph to a second season, but unless more cash starts flowing in, or halflings stop needing to be replaced some cuts will have to happen. Right now Triumph would be out of the post-season, but teams that are at the bottom will probably wind up picking up more points than we will, so that's probably subject to change.

Triumph's Corner

A decisive match against League Commissioner Crow's SSS might not be as decisive as the scoreboard says. While SSS managed to put up three points, they failed to keep the Treemen from making an impact. Between Bloomberg and honorary TT member Deeproot Strongbranch five goblins left the field for the match, and one of them will never be returning. While some might say that Treeman's Triumph preformed poorly, they preformed about as well as they could be expected to when one of the stars lined up in the backfield instead of in the wings to counter some of the Skaven push. Merry Brandybuck has been recognized as the most decisive player on Treeman's Triumph enough for Clarkson to be willing to provide a bit of training,

Spoiler: Week 2
Show
Triumph's Corner

A solid, if not very impressive, defensive performance from Treeman's Triumph kept the game against the Shadow from being a total blowout, though a complete lack of offense kept them from putting points up. The Halflings incredible gear kept them from suffering injuries, like the ones LDR suffered this week. And while a comparatively toughly armored Necromancer front line kept the Trio of Treemen from forcing the center down. The week ahead looks a bit more promising, with just about the only players the halflings can block on an even footing. While some ALL of the skaven playing for Triple-S are really scary, the cost for it is the amount of star power that Treeman's Triumph is bringing to bear for the match. Both Deeproot Strongbranch, and Morg n Thorg, counted among the strongest, and scariest Star Players. The hope is that between Deeproot, Bloodbranch, and Bloomberg someone can bring down Doc Nutsmasher. If that occurs, Clarkson thinks Triumph has a chance. Otherwise, Doc can hold the middle, and the game will be a repeat of last week with a few more injuries for Triumph. If Doc goes down, the skaven will be forced to come to the middle, where the Treemen have a chance to bring them down as well.

Roster Depth

Depending on your team and their armor value you may need a larger or fewer number of players. No matter what, you need eleven, but odds are when you go up against the better bashing teams, or just a bashing team in general, you won't be ending the game with eleven players. That said, if you have too many players, and they don't see play, the other team gets extra inducements, or you're getting fewer. Generally, you want at least 12, because no matter how good your armor is, players will go down, and sometimes they don't get back up. Plus, some players have Claws, and few teams can look at a Claws player and think "Hah! Extra Inducements!"

Most teams will want 12-13 players, though teams such as Halfings, Goblins, or Ogres will want 14. I'd advise against more than 14, no matter your roster, because most teams you need to be worried about losing more than three players against, you'll be getting a lot of inducements, in which case you can pick up some Star Players, or your team will have picked up some skills like Block, or Dodge that will keep your players on their feet and therefore not need the roster depth to deal with a lot of injuries.

Spoiler: Week 1
Show
Triumph's Corner

The Triumph are ready for their first match, ready for those Claws the werewolves have to do absolutely nothing, ready for the Flesh golems to fail to hold the line of scrimmage, ready to lay the beatdown on their opponents, and above all, ready to do some aerial acrobatics as they fly into ball carrier's faces. If you haven't figured it out yet, the Triumph are facing The Shadow, a team which took Season Five off. Coach Clarkson, and team captain Bloomberg both have experience against this rough and tumble running team. It takes some competent defense to keep them out of the endzone and a high powered offense to score against them. Clarkson is hoping to use the same strategy that the Sneak Kings used last season, loading up the line of scrimmage until no one can take it, and maybe score a couple times during the match if we're feeling spontaneous.

Game Plan Points

I've coached for two seasons now, having never even heard of it before. I've picked up a few things though, especially in relation to game plan points. They're what gave me a high powered, though controversial, offense in season 4, and a solider defense in season 5. Especially early on, focus your game plan points on the player you want scoring the points, because points win games, and Game Plan Points give you a chance to say I want this player to have the ball. Giving the player Kickoff return or sure hands will generally have the AI get the ball to them (the AI prefers high agility players though, so if you get a star player with higher agility than the majority of your team they may wind up with the ball), and Block or dodge will keep them on their feet.

Alternately you can use them to build to the game. Dedicated Ballcarrier got a miss next game? Give a Blitzer dodge. Going up against Amazons? Give some players tackle. Dwarves? Wrestle.

Learning when to use each strategy is critical to becoming a good coach in this league.

The door opens as an old - well, very old - skaven walks in, collapsing to the ground after a couple of steps. A robed and hooded figure stands beyond him, on the doorway.

Dana rushes to help the old one.

"By the Horned One! Dr. Badger?"

The hooded one walks in, too. Two thin hands, with long nails, remove the hood. Selene. Succubus in fabula.

"I don't think I can help you, dears. And this one... his place surely is not the Underfield." She points to Dr. Badger.

Rudy jumps to Selene, fist clenched. "What did you do to him?" he roars.

The attractive lady takes a deep breath. "Me? I feel a ease with dark magic and I have my agenda... that does not involve old skavens. Neither crazy teenagers, especially red haired girls resembling your younger copy, Dana."

Everyone turns to Selene, who casually sits on a chair, crossing her legs.

"After the attack of Etrigan, I put lots of magical alarms on the Underfield. Looks like it was a good idea. All of them triggered when this one falled on the field, together with a red haired skaven girl. She looked at us... then she started laughing as a mad. After that, the attack."

Selene looks at her nails, annoyed. Some of them are broken.

"She started with the goblins. Just for warm up a bit. Then he rushed to Stinger and Kowen, hurling them away as practicing for a passing game. It was time for my eidolons... she just unmade them. But he's just a girl: it took too much time and I made my move. In the meantime, it was Doc's turn."

She looks at Dana, piercing her with her sight.

"The girl uttered a word. With no audible sound. Just a ' '. And it was as Doc was hit by a ten ton hammer."

She looks at Dr. Badger: the old skaven is still unconscious.

"That was enough. I cut her link and she disappeared. Don't strain your minds, it's simple. He took her for a intensive training; some 13 years, more or less. Then they went back."

Selene gets up from the chair and moves to the door. Before leaving, she adds:

"Did you understand? She went back from her time. She went to the Underfield for a rehearsal. Next will be your turn. Good luck."

Dana closes the door and looks at Rudy. "She's sleeping, at last."

Rudy nods - finally his friend managed to put Annie to sleep, with some medicine.

"Thanks a lot. It was a shock for everyone, I cannot believe myself... poor Annie!"

Dana sits down and asks Rudy to do the same. She looks really tired. She, too, remembers too well what happened: the Reapers dashing in the room and shouting, the baby changing in a shadow thing, the fight... She sighs.

"Rudy, please, listen to me and don't get mad. Remember that Annie needs you."

Rudy jumps up. "Come on! What did you discover?"

"Hush! Annie is sleeping! Please, sit down again and listen to me. Try not to get mad, OK?"

The singer sits again and shakes his head, helpless. Dana goes on:

"I found some papers from Dr. Badger. Think that you're lucky, since he was ready to... kill your baby. All the check-ups, all the visits to Annie... every time he gave her some warpstone, mixed with other strange components that I never saw before. Looks like he wanted to give the voice of the banshee to the baby."

"But this is nonsense! She could kill all of us!"

Annie nods. "He was ready. He was planning to kill the baby and give her hearth to Experiment IV, to provide him the voices he could not hear anymore... and maybe bless him with such a voice of wrath. Please, let me finish!"

Annie sighs and looks away.

"Then he discovered that the baby had a birth caul. Is a rare event and is a mixed blessing: babies born with it will become shamans or wizards. Do you understand?"

"Do you mean that... HE ESCAPED WITH MY BABY TO TRAIN HER AS A SHAMAN?"

This is Annie. She opened the door and is standing in the doorway, looking at Dana. Rudy hardly recognize the carefree young woman he married: he sees a tired, sad and broken lady, with burning anger in her eyes. He moves to her, but she shakes her head and continue.

"Dana, I want to to follow him. And get back my baby. Where is that... that..."

"I really want to help, but I found very little in his papers. I think that there is just a person that could help us... Selene."

This is Rudy. Where I am? I can just see an unknown ceiling. What's this place?

"Annie, the baby... it's time! You have to do it, honey!"

And suddenly the pain, again. I can see Dr. Badger and Dana, now. But I cannot speak. I'm so tired. And I feel bad, too bad.

Dana gets near and takes my hand. "Hold on, Annie, do it for the baby, you can do it, my friend!"

I smile, but cannot speak. And suddenly I feel it. No, not it: her. My baby. My child!

"Annie, just a little more! Come on! It's coming out! Again!"

And finally I can hear her, her voice! My daughter! I can hear her cry, poor little baby; and I manage to get back my voice! "Please, give her to me..."

Rudy? Where are you? And Dana? Everything is black, again!

"She has a birth caul!"

This is Dr. Badger, excited. A... birth caul? What's that? Give me my baby, please, please...

"Cut it, Dana, and be careful! Don't hurt the girl!" It's Dr. Badger again. How strange, this is the first time I hear hime being so kind.

"Badger, where are you going?!" This is Rudy! What's happening again? And again the pain. Everything is black.

"Annie? Annie, wake up, the baby needs you!"

Uh? Where I am? And who... what is that?

"SHE'S NOT MY BABY!"

"Annie, honey, sure she is... I'm Rudy, listen to me. She's our baby and she needs you, she needs to eat..."

"SHE'S NOT MY BABY!"

I take her and I look at her again. And I smell. She does not smell of a child. She smells of warpstone.

"Where is that monster? Where is Badger?"

Dana shakes her cute head. "Nowhere to be found."

The little baby screams, screams, screams - and she stops. She looks at me with malicious eyes and a wicked grin, then she changes.

"Tania and Tania Too are the best!"

It takes little to make a skaven happy: good food, good drinks... and nice girls!

It looks like a normal party, some sort of routine for the Tanias. It could be. But today Experiment IV ("Four" for his team mates) is not drinking. He's sitting in a corner of the tavern, his huge shape throwing an even bigger shadow on the walls.

Rudy notices the strangeness of his big mate and reaches him. The rat-ogre is looking at his mug, still full.

"Four, what happens? Anything wrong? You can drink, Meredith said it's ok..."

The singer speaks slowly, as to a small child.

"Four is sad. Field not sing to Four anymore. Four sing but field is silent. Too silent. Four want song."

Rudy sits at the table, looking at his mate. Experiment IV is right: after Leriel's death, he no more heard the strange "voices" from the "Naked Singularity", too. He gasps: could it be something related to Katherine, the banshee?

"Four, you can sing with me and Annnie. Don't be sad..."

The huge beast growls at the small skaven: "Four angry! Four wants voice from field! Four know songs! Listen!

Just a swimmer growing dimmer
In the glimmer of a summer
Waving gladly, swimming madly
Never never going under...
"

The glass of beer in Rudy's hand breaks, but the singer hardly notices it: how? How can Experiment IV sing in such a way? Uttering all words as a tongue-twister, with the power of a thunder!

The rat-ogre continues.

"See the light ram through the gaps in the land.
Erase the race that claim the place
And say we dig for ore.
"

This! Rudy knows this song, he heard it during a training on the field! But the skaven has little time to think at the matter: Experiment IV crashed the table, raising, and his huge hands are searching for Rudy's throat.

"RUDY!"

The voice belongs to Annie. She's trying to reach her husband, wading through the crowd. Someone is shouting. Someone is getting out of the tavern. Dangerous Beanz is trying to reach Four, too, guided by the Tanias, but he's too far.

Annie gasps. She feels a pain at her belly: the baby!

And suddenly Experiment IV stops. "THE VOICE!"

The huge rat-ogre bows down before Annie, getting near her tummy. "Sing for me..."

Annie looks at Rudy, who shakes his head. He, too, gets near to the orange-haired singer... and hears someone singing a nursery rhyme. Someone with Katherin's voice. From Annie's belly...

"Low Down Dirty Rats are here! They will be our opponents for next game!"
Rudy and Annie are quite excited: an all skaven derby is always a cool one! Also, the singers are eager to see Tania and Tania Too - maybe they could arrange for a jam session or so!

The veteran gutter runners are already greeting Krusty Callipso; they were sad for his decision of leaving the team, but they are nevertheless happy to share a beer with their former mate.

So, looks like everyone is happy! Everyone... but Dr. Badger. The apothecary sits on a chair on his study, speaking with Dana.
"Do you see them? Looks like they're already thinking about going for a drink after the match. They're not caring about the match at all!"
Dr. Badger shakes his head.
"When I was hired by Leriel, he explained me his expectations. And I fully agreed. He wanted to reach the top and he asked me to provide strong specimen to line up on the field. Good players. Focused ones. Not that scum" he says, looking at the singers outside.

Dana is sad. Even if she's a creation of Dr. Badger, she became a Reaper and she cares about skavens: she wants people to be happy and she does not understand her master's obsession.

She hesitates, wanting to speak, but the middle-aged skaven goes on.
"I don't understand why Leriel decided to leave the team to Ms. Grey: she's weak, scared, surely not a leader. And she's the daughter of a Grey Seer!"

Dana lowers her head. She does not agree: Meredith is a kind soul, and she has a great responsabilty.

Suddenly Dr. Badger raises and moves toward the opposite side of the study. He takes a book from his desk, and grins. A wicked grin.
"But I'll take care of this. I found this on Leriel's study. Years of notes from the coach: notes about forbidden lore and rituals. So far I was just able to set up the trasmutation circle for the were-skaven transformation, but this is only the beginning..."

The apothecary move again near her assistant. "Be prepared, Dana: things will change. Trust me!"

Dana shudders and nods. What can she do? How can she stop her master?

The banshee menace

Rudy is drinking some water, in the kitchen of the new flat he shares with Annie. He looks nervously outside the window: everything is dark.
He just can't sleep. And cabalvision is not working.
Annie appears at the door. The orange-haired singer looks tired and worried.
"Still awake? That nightmare again?"
Rudy nods. "Again. You know, it started after the death of Leriel, after hearing Katerine. I still hear her terrible, painful voice..." he sighs.
Annie reaches her partner and hugs him. She cuddles and caresses Rudy, until she feels him relaxing a little.
"Let's go to bed, Rudy... Maybe you'll manage to get some rest. We need it. All three of us" she smiles, looking at her belly.

The isotopes war

Dr. Badger is looking at the corpse of Derek Deuterium, whispering something. He turns suddenly at the door: Dana just entered into the lab.
"Come in, Dana, I really need your help. Could you please double check this autopsy, please?"
The young assistant looks carefully at the paper, then turn to inspect the cold body on the table.
"I confirm, Dr. Badger. Derek died from a vicious blow from an orc, but his body was already hurt. No, not hurt: more... near to a collapse. I wonder how he was able to reach the field!"
The middle-aged skaven smiles. "That's right. Looks like the blood of F.A.S.T. Gonzalo was still unstable. Probably, the exposition to warpstone was too much for him."
"What do you mean, Doc?"
"Derek and Triston are just the nicknames of experiments V and VI. I created them from a pair of twin specimen, that's true, but I made some... let's say, improvement.
For Derek, first I added some blood of F.A.S.T. Gonzalo. Take some of his blood was simple: I told the Star Player that I need to be sure he was fully healed. Then some warpstone, as usual... and finally some fragment of the Head."
Dana steps back, horrified. "The head? Leriel's one?"
"Don't pretend to be surprised, Dana. Sure, his head. He does not need it anymore. For Triston I added some blood of Göndul, instead. And a feather. Yes, one from Crow."
Dr. Badger takes off his glasses and cleans them.
"I wanted to be sure that the two of them were rival. Just to make them more competitives. But I need to restart to work on Derek. Come on, we need to bring him to life again..."

The revenge of the Twin

"Ms. Grey?"
"Oh, come in, Dr. Badger! By the Horned Rat, this office is such a mess..."
"Don't worry, Ms. Grey. Here - I'm pleased to announce that I found a valid substitute for Derek. He's Dirk Deuterium."
"But... I don't have enough money to hire him..."
"He will wait. Trust me, he will. He's the twin of Derek, after all."

A new hope

Meredith looks at the team, training.
"I hope Triston will pass that ball..."

Badger strikes back!

"Finally she left!"
Dr. Badger is hidden in shadows, looking at Meredith, leaving Leriel's office, now her office.
"Let's take a look again at that book in the secret chamber..."

The return of the Rat

"Good morning, Dana!"
"Ohh... Nice to see you, Annie! Are you looking for Dr. Badger?"
"That's right, he should visit me... you know, the baby... it's almost time!"
Dana smiles and hugs her friend. "He'll be back soon, he and Möebius are building something at the stadium. Oh, here he is."
"Good morning, ladies. Ms. Rattox, still with that color on your hair?"
Annie snorts: Dr. Badger has such prejudices! Then she notices the furs he's carrying on his shoulder. The skaven apothecaries follows her eye.
"These are not the wolves I was looking for" he hisses.

The Wolf awakens

Mister Tea is a little afraid. Sure, he trusts Dr. Badger, but a seven points star drawn with silver dust is not something you see everyday.
One more breath, and one more step inside it.
Then it began.
His fur is growing, and it's getting darker.
His claws are growing, too.
His sight is improving. And the smell! Who could imagine that things smelled so intense?
Blood is running faster.
Pain? What is pain?
He's ready. No more a simple skaven... the first of were-skaven!

Default Re: GitP Blood Bowl Manager Cup Season VI - Results, Standings, and Schedules

This week in Blood Bowl, the Shadow are still floundering, with now as many not-wins as they have wins, but there is a solid belief that perhaps they could recover, given enough motivation and temporarily broken kneecaps. This week they go after Anlec Razors, a team with a solid record and a lot of dodging potential, which essentially means "The Shadow's worst nightmare." There are many fans who think that the betting circles aren't giving the Shadow enough credit, and that it should at least be a 3-1 for them. Many other fans think they're pessimistic. The other fans are waiting for a good old fashioned coach roast.

Presumably, amidst all the doubt, Drinfan, still riding the optimism of his All Star win, is working to improve the chances of victory that the Shadow have.

Spoiler: The Midseason report
Show
Mid-Season Report

A cloud looms over the Shadow's Home Pitch, a cloud of doubt, of shame, of past failure. The Shadow will thrive under this cloud. They will take the doubt, the disappointment, the sudden changes from victory to defeat, and turn it around. Victory is only an effort away, determination is what Garphor needs, and though he has shown a penchant for defeatism, he has also shown a will to not let that get in the way of trying for a win, of doing whatever it takes to ensure victory.

Offense: The Shadow's offensive capability is one of the most dangerous in the league, that is, when they properly mobilize it. With two of the best running players in the entire scope of Blood Bowl and two backups who are nearly as good if not on par, The Shadow have the potential to be absolute nightmares against anyone they face, in any situation. However, this is hampered by a general lack of ability of the rest of the team to keep up with the offense, the slow speed of the zombies and the below average maneuverability of the Wight and Flesh Golems leave the running team with very little covering them, leading to easy counter-attack. (7 of 10)

Defense: Were it not for some underrating of some skills early on by coach Drinfan, the Shadow might have the most comprehensive, effective defense in the entire league, but with a notable lack of the skills to cooperate in a large melee and to take down the more hard to-catch players, the potential has been wasted on individualism and a perceived need to create injury rather than hold the line. (6 of 10)

Coaching Ability: Coach Drinfan has displayed, at alternating points, shots of brilliance and bouts of disappointing experimentation that have led to stagnation in the team's win percentage. The most notorious of these failures are those mentioned in Defense above and the attempt to create a passing team with (Now cut) wight Jan Henryk Dabrowski. With assurances that he will cut out the experimentation in the future for more proven plans, hopes are high that the coach can forge the team into a playoff winner by the end. (6 of 10)

This week is the All-Star week, where the Necromantic have shone in the past, the stunning performance of now-Assistant-Coach Siegfried von Richthofen in the Snotling Derby only overshadowed by his inability to win, reminiscent of The Shadow's career as a whole.

Spoiler: Previously
Show
Coach Garphor Drinfan my have a lot to explain to expectant fans at the end of this next game.

The Shadow, having played excellently in the beginning of the season, have tied, and now lost, their first game in the season. Their record is no worse than other top-tier teams, but no other team has quite the spectre looming over them that The Shadow now does. If they do not win this next game The Shadow will be on track to repeat their previous season's disastrous second half, something that no one wants. A staunch refusal to spend money to improve the team's chances has been viewed as some as a holding pattern to try and ensure that The Shadow can approach Season VII with a much better chance, but as The Shadow's record worsens, so do the spirits of the fans.

Last Week's gameplan was also somewhat suspect, and this week we're going to be looking for a much stronger approach from Drinfan, who hopes to topple struggling champions the Talabheim Eagles as both teams stutter into week seven.

Spoiler: Previously on The Boneyard
Show
The Shadow's second season is eerily similar to their first, which is likely what they owe to still being second on "Murder!"'s power rankings despite having the best record of all teams in the league. The pristine performance of the team this year is in direct contrast to the first one, however, without the injury and setback that plagued the first season. Additionally, The Shadow have ample funds to fulfill any need, any disaster can easily be handled by the funds that Garphor has piled in his office (Rumor states that he has made a throne out of the coin, declaring "Cash for the Cash throne" to a secretary. These allegations could not be confirmed).

Whatever happened in the past, The Shadow now face their toughest opponent yet, the Sultans of Slaughter. The Sultans are the best chance The Shadow has to pick up devastating injuries this season, the physical team only made more physical by the plan that they have set up this week. The Shadow's only hope is that the superior offensive capabilities, and the help of Count Luthor, can boost them to their fifth victory.

This week on "The Boneyard" we examine the win against Murder, Arson, and Jaywalking, a secure win that was made possible in part by the great coaching of Garphor Drinfan and the lucky knockout of the Artificially Enhanced Bloodletter Madcap Chad. With Chord Horrid sabotaged by Garphor's skillful planning, this left M.A.J. without any scoring potential. Although they managed to keep The Shadow to at least a somewhat respectable score and leave "Wash Me" with an injury to remember them by, it's clear that the team manhandled them the whole match.

This week we have The Shadow facing off against the only other Necromantic team in the League, Scumburger. Though Scumburger has put up some impressive scores and have some impressive players, they've not got nearly the depth that The Shadow's managed to put together despite the mysterious refusal of the manager to pick up the multiple quality Free-Agents that Necromantic teams have available to them, including the still retired George "Grafts" and several of the more experienced Zombies.

Somewhat mysterious is the difficulty that the two Wights have had in advancing themselves alongside the rest of the team, where season IV they were only second in skill to the Werewolves, and Dabrowski and Siegfried practically led the team the whole season, despite the downturn at the end.

Spoiler: Previously, on "The Boneyard"
Show

This week the Shadow stormed back onto the pitch with a disappointing win against the Halflings of Treeman's Triumph. Despite the coach Clarkson's boast that the experience of Season IV would bring them a victory, he was once again trounced, though his strategy of dominating the middle of the field did prove to be an effective strategy, limiting The Shadow to a single touchdown in the game. The Shadow's victory cannot be given too much weight however, as it's only a harder road ahead.

The Shadow's new strategy, opposed to last year's, is to keep as much interlocking coverage as possible in all areas that don't involve the Ghouls or Werewolves. The Werewolves are to be mobile havoc-makers, difficult to knock down without the proper experience and terrifying to face off against. The Ghouls are hopefully to become the primary scorers, but with the exceptional performance of the Werewolves, it's difficult to say that this will work. With Guard being given to as many players as possible in the future, The Shadow hopes to be an unbeatable team in the late season.

And now, we're proud to present an interview with former Star Runner-Up of the Snotling Derby and Assistant Coach of The Shadow, Siegfried von Richthofen.

IN: "Siegfried, I'm glad to have you on again."

SIEG: "I'M GLAD TO HAVE YOUR MUM AGAIN."

IN: "Well, let's dive right into the questions shall we? How do you feel about your victory against Treeman's Triumph."

SIEG: "WE MIGHT GET AWAY WITH THAT AGAINST HALFLINGS, BUT AGAINST A TEAM OF, SAY, PARAPLEGICS, WE WOULD BE ANNIHILATED. WE'RE SET UP TO REPEAT THE LAST HALF OF LAST SEASON. HELL, GNAWLINS WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO ACTUALLY PREFORMED AND HE WAS ORIGINALLY FROM FEETS RELOADED. IF THEY WERE STILL HERE WE'D NEVER HEAR THE END OF IT."

IN: "Hmmm, interesting sentiment. How do you plan on correcting the deficiencies of your team? That being the flexibility of your offense and the staunchness of your defense?"

SIEG: "I PLAN TO HAVE OUR DEFENSE START TO ACTUALLY WORK TOGETHER AND HAVE THE WEREWOLVES BECOME DODGY LITTLE ****S. I'M LEAVING NOW." *Exits stage left*

Spoiler: Previously, on "The Boneyard"

Tonight, in the Boneyard, we discuss the return of Season IV Allstars-turned-Failures "The Shadow" who have come back with a strong roster, though with the controversial cutting of their most experienced player, it can't be said yet that the coaching staff is entirely competent. Of course, one of the members of this coaching staff is previously-most-successful player Siegfried von Richthofen, who had to be cut from The Shadow's roster early last season due to catastrophic injury sustained on the pitch.

Returning werewolf Skoll should prove to be a terror on the field, with the strongest arm and the sharpest claws, we're looking for this werewolf to produce the most casualties this season, backed by experienced Flesh Golems and his counterpart, Fenrir. Interestingly, the third most experienced player taking the field for The Shadow is the now beloved Zombie, Stupid, who'd have thought that one so dedicatedly dumb could come so far and do so much.

Another rookie saves the day for Brillanté

Rick Branch: ... and that's one elf that won't be climbing the wrong tree... ever again. Am I right Cindy? Of course I am. Now, we say hello to our sports commentator, Alan Roundwood.

Voiceover: Leaf News Network, The News that matter in the Woods

Alan Roundwood: Thanks Rick, and once again we have to talk about the fellas at Club Atlético Brillanté. What a showing last night, three passing touchdowns, one interception, and if two weeks ago we talked about then rookie Milkteeth making an entrance winning a match with a defensive TD, now we must say something about Sergio Denis. A rookie thrower, set onto the pitch to replace league leader in passes Wilson, and boy did he perform. Three passes, all of them generating Touchdowns, and another win based on offensive play by Brillanté.

Against Talabheim Eagles next week, both Throwers will be elegible to take the field, opposite Eagle's credit Edwin Armbuster. But who's going to take the ball for Brillanté's offensive play?

We'll have to wait until next week to figure that out. Back to you, Rick.

RB: Thanks Alan. No mention of the match against Da Monsters I see. Well, I wouldn't talk about it either if I was a Brillanté fan.

Blood Illustrated was able to secure an interview with Xapi, manager of Blood Bowl Cup newcomers Brillanté.

Blood Illustrated: So, tell us, how did this team came to be?

Xapi: Well, to be honest, the team predates me. You see, this team used to participate in friendly matches with other minor teams all over the country. And before you say anything, no, it was not an elaborate scheme to smuggle illegal mushrooms hidden in balls and equipment. That is just a rumour coming from our opponents who wish to discredit us. The fact that the team had a record of 0-15-1 in such friendly matches is simply an unfortunate unlucky streak.

Bl: Alright then, I guess that is cleared. So, where do you come in?

X: First, the addition of thrower Wilson to the team, his vision and leadership, is what convinced these valiant elves that they could be more than just smug- er, I mean, a mediocre team. He contacted me to bring my expertise into play, and I was more than willing.

Bl: So what are your teams srenghts? What is the game plan for Brillanté?

X: This is a pure and proud Wood Elves team, we take pride in our passing, running and dodging, and we see no reason to betray our essence. I think we showed in the pre season friendly that we can take on the stronger opponents on the league and lose with dignity. So I think you'll see a lot more of that in the coming weeks.

Bl: More losing with dignity?

X: Yes.

So, that was Xapi, coach for Brillanté's Wood Elves.

Alan Roundwood: (laughs unsincerely) No Rick, not this time. This time we talk about Blood Bowl, for our local team, Brillanté, made a debut in the GitP Blood Bowl Manager Cup, and let me tell you, it was stellar. A 3-1 away win against a seasoned team and Division B rival, suffering no major injuries.

RB: Impressive really, and you were at the Stadium, and were able to interview the Man of the Match right after the game?

AR: I was Alan, let's go to the tape, shall we?

Voiceover: Leaf News Network, The News that matter in the Woods

AR: Mr. Betty, a great show today from the underdogs, and specially a great performance by yourself. How did you feel on the pitch?

Betty: Well, it was a hard matchup for our first game, but we worked hard all week, gave all we had on the pitch, and the manager was able to make good use of the cash from our sponsors, so this win is really all about team work.

AR: Your next game is against Sweet Feet, who have a reduced lineup due to injuries, at your home stadium, do you think that makes you the favourites after this result?

B: Not at all, they're still the most experienced, best prepared team of the two. We'll try to do our best again, really take advantage of the week we've got ahead of us, and the extra cash the sponsors might bring in for playing against a big team like Sweet Feet, that way we might be able to pull out another upset.

AR: Do you have anything to say to the fans that is not a prefabricated common place message?

B: Depends, do you have any question that isn't boring? Fans at home, keep on watching the news, because if this [CENSORED] comes with these kind of questions when I'm not in a mood as good as this, you'll be seeing blood!

RB: Alright, we're back at the studio, after an appealing demand for serious journalism by Betty, star of Brillanté. We're with you all the way, mate. No need to show us blood or anything.

Blood Illustrated: So, a lot has changed since we spoke last time, what was the key to this great start for Brillanté?

Xapi: Well, we really need a player that is ready to take on the challenge of the opposition and break their lines, and I feel that a Wardancer is the way to go. If you'd seen the places she used to dance at before picking up Blood Bowl, well, you'd know she's not going to be afraid of the opposition.

Bl: You are facing the Sultans of Slaughter later this week, another team that is high on the division in spite of being newcomers. How do you feel about that matchup?

X: Truly a hard team to face, very physical and, well, slaughtery. Part of the reason we picked up Milkteeth as well, their Nurgle Warriors can frighten most opposition. But I know that if our guys are able to stay on their feet, the match can go our way.

Bl: Isn't that a big "if"?

X: It's pretty big, but it's the only one we've got.

Milkteeth: Thanks mate, it's always hard to go on the pitch against a team that is tougher than yours, and I was given a lot of defensive duties, so I'm happy that I was able to do what the coach wanted of me.

Bl: Next up for you guys is Da Monsters, a fearless Orc team, what are your thoughts on that match_

M: Well, we're going to work all week to toughen up our game, see if we can match a little of their physicality, and then bring our usual passing and running game to the table, and try for the win.

Bl: Murder Magazine has stated, in it's past two issues, that Da Monsters will be the first to break Brillanté's win streak, what do you say to that?

M: Well, let me put it plainly. Murder Magazine's writers are all on Commisioner Crow's payroll, we all know that. And we're going to show them what we think of their words, not only next week against Da Monsters, but also on Week 11 against those puny Goblins.

Bl: Well, there's more to SSS than just Goblins, you know? They have a Troll of sorts...

It is with great grief that I adress you, in this week, having lost one of our own. The match against Da Monsters was a dangerous one, we all knew this, and our partner and friend Tatú entered the field with elven grace, human bravery and dwarven stubborness. His efforts at the line of scrimmage were, as always, fundamental to secure a result that given the circumstances, we must describe as good.

We lost a friend on the field, and it may not be the last time it happens. Our condolences go to his family, and as we carry on into our upcoming challenges, we hope we can give our all in the field, as Tatú did.

If we had set our sights into qualifying for the playoffs, this objective is now renewed, as it is our chance to face Da Monsters again, and pay them in Touchdowns what they inflicted on us in blood.

Sincerely

Da Midden Heap...

So the second half of the season will kick off with a pair of bruising matches for Da Monsters - the Nurgle squad on their home turf, followed by division leader and perennial power Triple-S. The spectre of serious injury hangs over every match, but with the pivotal Division A match in two weeks, the Sultans pose an even greater obstacle than usual. Da Monsters only know one way to respond to an obstacle, though...and that is by plowing right on through.

The hitting core of Da Monsters has always been solid, but with the recent improvements of the rookie Black Orcs, Da Monsters now features an impressive array of players with the skill to identify weakness in opposition players...and the power to put them on the ground. This week Coach Hallaz has focused on getting Truk and Dulk "Dent" to use teamwork and distraction to help their linemates blow the Nurgle off their feet.

Still, a Beast of Nurgle is a frightening force to behold, and the boyz will have to work together and consistently win their other one-on-one battles to keep the rest of the Rotters and Warriors off of "Mac" Wazgor and any other Monster ball carriers. Much remains to be seen...not least of which is the potential benefit the Sultans will gain from their home field.

Fresh off da Heap...
• The naming ceremony for Truk has been delayed due to the Midseason break;
• The Crud! Cup seems to have lost some of its variability following the match against the Dark Elves...perhaps the Witches wrought some sort of spell?
• Rookie Biggz has seen limited playing time. Rumor has it his effort in practice hasn't been up to Coach Hallaz' standards. We'll have to see what the second half of the season brings!

It seems like just yesterday Da Monsters were heading into training camp, fresh off a raiding season in the soft-n-squishy Hummie lands. So how're da boyz doing this year? Let's take a moment and have a look, shall we?

The team is unbeaten, thanks in part (read as: wholly) to a consistent defense featuring an unimaginative, but effective, skillset. They don't have money, or power, but what they do have is a very specific set of skills...in this case, Block, Tackle and Mighty Blow, all tuned to limit the effectiveness of any offense they face. Still, at 4-0-3 they are not exactly presenting themselves as a championship threat. After all, victory is the result of outscoring your opponent...and Da Monsters haven't had as much success there as their fans may have hoped.

But let's talk more about this defense! Ranked at the top of the board in kills, casualties, knock-outs and offensive body odor, Da Monsters have pummeled virtually every team they have faced this year. With four shut-outs, and the opposition only managing to score three times in the other three games, Da Monsters also sit atop the heap in touch downs allowed. Their margin, however, remains a paltry +6. This anemic scoring output will have to be addressed in the second half of the season, or we're likely to see an early playoff exit. With the offensive firepower out there you just can't expect the defense to carry the day week in and week out.

In terms of individual play the team has seen the expected output from "Icebox" Grot, this year's Snotling Derby champion. Though there have been a couple of matches where he didn't show on the stat sheet, he has had an impressive run with his combined 11 casualties and knockouts accounting for a quarter of Da Monster's total. "Icebox" is certainly making a case for DPoY.

Speaking of DPoY, "Samurai" Narthug has been strangely quiet this season. Despite an impressive workout regimen leading to clearly increased strength, the Blitzer hasn't spent much time on the stat sheet highlights. Certainly his effort and presence have been felt, and we expect that the second half of the season will reflect his ferocity and ability a bit more clearly than the first half.

Kolish, a early season addition, has proven a pleasant surprise. His combined defensive and offensive efforts have been key in several victories for Da Monsters, and to "Mac" Wazgor's shame, it was the rookie blitzer that was involved in the first Monster pass completion on record. We have high hopes that Kolish will learn from Team Captain "Samurai" Narthug and continue to show up every week.

"Mac" Wazgor continues to disappoint from an offensive output perspective, and while he hasn't turned the ball over or made any terrible misplays, the team will need him to step up the offensive game in the second half of the season.

Despite the three ties it has been a decent start to the year, and Da Monsters fans are optimistic that our team will carry on and head into the playoffs in a strong position. We're all certainly looking forward to Week 10 and the match against SSS as a preview of the playoffs!

Buttkiss Award Winner: This year's Buttkiss award nominee is clearly "Icebox" Grot. A combination of grit and power have made him a force to be feared. Let's hope his keeps doling out the punishment!

Spoiler: Da Heap Week 7
Show
It's a short week and quick turnaround for Da Monsters as they move to the second stop of their three-match tour of the Chaos Wastes. A pedestrian performance against the Khonites of Murder, Arson and Jaywalking was just enough to squeak by, winning 1-0 on a late touchdown by Kolish. The defense remained stout, even managing to knock a bloodthirster around a bit...though the match did see several key Monsters knocked out of action for a few plays. Fortunately they'll all be back in time for the next mob of Blood God followers from DIRE. Interesting note: Da Monsters have had three consecutive games against teams claiming loyalty to a blood god...and then comes the plague. Good thing orcs are immune to blood-borne infections!

Coach Hallaz gave the boyz a few days off this week despite the impending all-star break. When asked about the decision he punched out the inquiring reporter and then kicked that reporter's neighbor for good measure. Clearly he has a plan and just isn't interested in sharing it with the media. And that's a good thing! Just don't wish Da Midden Heap into the corn field, Coach Hallaz!

Fresh of Da Heap...
• Looks like Durgul "Hurtlocker" is intent on keeping that hideous tunic;
• Rumor has it we'll see a bit more mobility for "Mac" Wazgor this week;
• While our friends in Nuffle Broadcasting have tagged Krot with a new nickname that brought howls of orcish laughter, Coach Hallaz has indicated he has something more appropriate coming soon

Spoiler: Da Heap Week 6
Show
Once again the ugly spectre of offensive incompetence has reared its head. Despite a solid defensive performance against the Backstabonian dark elves, "Mac" Wazgor and the rest of Da Monsters were unable to put up a single tally. Fortunately the defensive expertise of the orc team resulted in four casualties, a pair of knockouts and a dead dark elf...holding the dark elves scoreless while keeping the ball in the elves' side of the field for three-fourths of the match. Even the addition of the greatest Orc Blood Bowler of all time couldn't help crack the match. At least the team escaped without injury, a positive considering there's a Khorne team on the horizon.

Starting what should prove to be three consecutive knock-down-drag-out games, Da Monsters are slated to take on the Khorne-worshipping team of Murder, Arson and Jaywalking. As is always the case when facing mutation capable opponents, the Claws are the boyz biggest concern. Nothing mangles an orc gameplan like things that ignore armor. The best solution, of course, is a strong and aggressive showing, taking the fight to the Chaos folk and keeping as many of them on their back as possible. With an entire team trained in the finer aspects of blocking, the skill advantage will be with the greenskins. It looks like Coach Hallaz has dipped into his discretionary funds to help buttress the team...but we'll see to what degree in the coming days.

Fresh of Da Heap...
• There won't be a lot of trickeration this week - the keys to the match are hit, hit, hit.
• Durgul "Hurtlocker" has a special addition to his kit for this match and boy, is it ugly. Seems he found a tunic while visiting a temple in Naggoroth and liked it so much he decided to wear it...
• "Mac" Wazgor is looking light on his feet. Good thing, too, because dark tidings await him if he goes scoreless again!

Spoiler: Da Heap Week 5
Show
It appears Da Monsters have reverted to form, blundering about to a draw against the Wood Elves of Brillante'. The match saw rookies Kolish and Dulk batter two of the elves to paste...one requiring a near-miracle to survive, the other becoming more mulch for the trees they worship...and the Bash Brothers "Icebox" Grot and Krot each inflict some lasting harm. It was particularly gratifying to see Kolish make such an impact in his first match with the squad. Not only did he log a fatal blow, he actually threw a pass to fellow Blitzer Durgul for the first aerial touchdown in Monsters history! Strangely the boyz didn't knock too many of the elves out during the match. Perhaps that was the result of the Heap Jinx (trademark pending) bringing focus to the number of opponents knocked senseless in previous weeks.

There was a bit of controversy on the practice field this week, with some of the correspondents and analysts suggesting that Durgul "Hurtlocker" was a little too focused on defensive technique. Rightly noting the dexterity he displayed in his touchdown-scoring pass, the lead writer for Murder! saw a clear imperative for Da Monsters to nurture that unorcly virtue and perhaps turn the blitzer into a nascent touchdown catching machine. Coach Hallaz certainly seemed to consider the option, but recollecting last year's campaign and the trained catcher on the roster not so much as being targeted for a pass elected to hold to the conservative ideology of bash-bash-bash-wander into the endzone. If "Mac" Wazgor were a bit more coachable in the tense moments there would have been great value in using the blitzer to subvert the opposition's expectations...but with the thrower seemingly on auto-pilot it is likely the move would have resulted in both sharing time in the backfield.

Moving from the lithe and nimble pacifists to the lithe and nimble sadists, Da Monsters will face the Backstabonians on the third and final week of this road trip. While both teams share a love of the physical aspect of the game, the Naggorothi prefer a bit more subtle version of aggression. The boyz will have to be alert and mind the distractions they are sure to face in Dark Elf territory, where even the blades of grass might drip poison. We'll have to keep both eyes open to see what Peat brings to the match this week. One thing is certain...there will be blood aplenty. Even if it is in bubbling cauldrons on the sidelines.

Fresh off the Heap...
• Watch for Truk to finally log some playing time and Dulk will be out for this key match-up
• Varag Ghoul-Chewer has come out of retirement to join Da Monsters on the final leg of the road trip. Let's hope he's primed for the fight!
• Word has it that Krot has been working extra hard on the heavy bag. The question is...is that the feed bag, or the body bag? We'll see this week!

Spoiler: Da Heap Week 4
Show
Talk about bloody! Who would have thought that trees could hit so hard? What looked at first to be a minor ankle injury ended up costing Grish his life, prompting Coach Hallaz to call for an investigation into possible use of poisons by Treeman's Triumph. It certainly couldn't have been the result of malpractice by old Doc Bleedle, right? Mongo Magsgut and Snagwart Jones also took their lumps and will be sorely missed this week. Both had shown real ability in knocking down the more nimble of opponents...and nimbleness is about all the Wood Elves have going for them.

On the other hand, there was also an explosion of offensive output by our boyz in Bruised and Gore! Durgul and "Mac" Wazgor each found the end zone...but did you see "Icebox" Grot rumble in for a score? I'm reminded of a similar score by "Refrigerator Perry" in the Super Bowl (whatever a "refrigerator" and a "Super Bowl" are...). Even though some have said that magic was afoot, this reporter is still impressed by the speed and precision shown by Da Monsters, ringing up 3 TDs. Sure, the halflings stood up a bit better than expected, taking only 2 casualties and 3 knock-outs, there were a few nice fouls sprinkled in for good measure.

The match against Brillante should see a return to form with the boyz dishing out the punishment, not taking it on the chin. We'll see if expectations hold!

Fresh off the Heap...
• Grot continues to impress, racking up at least one casualty and KO for the 3rd consecutive week
• "Mac" Wazgor racked up another 78 yards rushing, staying near the top of the charts
• Tackling practice is the order of the week and Krot and Durgul prepare for the wood elves

Spoiler: Da Heap Week 3
Show
Da Monsters Win! A lackluster offensive showing again, but da boyz were able to grind one out against the dead flesh and lupine claws of Scumburger. The KOs and casualties continue to ring up as expected, and the lightly armored halflings of Treeman's Triumph should suffer as did the mice and zombies before them. The questions remain...can da boyz withstand the arboreal onslaught, and even if they do...can they score enough to win?

Sticking to their tried and true playbook ("Grab the dodgy gits and smack 'em in the gob!"), Coach Hallaz spent the week making Durgul and Krot catch greased snotlings "To improve their hand-eye coordination", leading to a surprising shortage of snotlings in the region. It was Grish's week with the Cup, and with Coach Hallaz and team MVP "Samurai" Narthug's admonishments ringing in his ears he promised not to get so much as a scratch on the trophy. Of course, that meant every other orc in hearing distance set out to dent the Cup on his watch. For a rookie, though, Grish proved clever. Jumping each time the Cup tottered, he was able to catch the valuable (valueless?) prize before it struck the ground. We'll see if the focus carries over to the real pitch!

Noting Selene's extra heavy purse, Coach Hallaz offered his thoughts. "Sure, Triple-S is on top of Da Heap this week...but inn'it only because Da Monsters stuck it to those deadites? Seems to me the cash shoulda been split! We'll remember that come Week 10." That might be true...but Coach isn't known for his memory.

Fresh off the Heap...
• Dulk looked good against Scumburger, notching MVP and a new appreciation for defensive technique;
• Kills continue to be the theme of the season, with Da Monsters racking up another body sent to the morgue;
• Focus seems to have slid this week as the wafting odor of grilled mushrooms and Halfling Pie proved a continual distraction. How big? TBD!

Spoiler: Da Heap Week 2
Show
Well, it appears that the charitable impotence has carried forward. Despite an excellent physical presence featuring 4 injuries (with two kills) and 7 knockouts inflicted, da boyz just couldn't get it done. It appears that "Mac" Wazgor has had to spend some time dodging projectiles from Coach Hallaz...maybe that nimbleness will help him find the endzone in the future. It was good to see that "Icebox" Grot is still every bit the hammer that we witnessed last season. Let's hope the claws and arrows of the undead are blunted by his armor, and that their soft dead flesh gives way to his pounding fists!

There have been some questions about the time "Samurai" Narthug spent away from the team this week, and that the exposure from Muscle and Orkness went to his head. Either that, or the attention it generated was too...distracting. In any event, we certainly expect a better performance from him next week. If not, it might be an orc knocking him out instead of a skaven!

Fresh of the heap...
"Mac" Wazgor has taken a lot of criticism...deservedly so...for his utter lack of offensive production. Killing a Sweet Feet skaven did buy him some forgiveness, but he still needs to pick up the slack on the scoreboard. To that end, we hear he has been working the tires and ropes pretty hard and looks more nimble than ever before. Combined with that strange potion he drank last night, he promises to "show da fans sumtin' completely different!" this week.

Let's see if it matters...

Spoiler: Da Heap, Week 1
Show
Da Monsters, brainchild (fever dream?) of Coach Hallaz, are back for their sophomore season. Having seen a promising start to the season wasted by close loss after narrow miss...mostly due to what can be charitably called an impotent offense...Hallaz has shuffled his roster to play to the strengths of the Orc. Power, ferocity, and a willingness to get hit in the head!

Brothers "Icebox" Grot and Krot have been joined by two additional Black Orcs, and while they might be good at caving in skulls with axes we've yet to see if Dulk and Truk have the ability to translate size and strength to Bloodbowl success.

Returning Defensive Player of the Year (and Monsters MVP), "Samurai' Narthug is looking to build on his accomplishments and continue to be a force of controlled destruction. Sure, the clawed monstrosities wandering the rosters of some other teams may rack up a higher body count...but with pointy bitz on the ends of their hands, who wouldn't?...but the backbone of Da Monsters can be counted on to bring his trademark intensity and focus to each match.

Further solidifying the defensive mien of the squad, Coach Hallaz has added two more blitzers, cutting an underperforming Badzod and two lineorcs who saw limited play last season. Weeks of extra practice, carefully scheduled around warband raiding season, has provided Da Monsters with a bit more field IQ as well and should translate into fewer mistakes during play.

It was tough decision, according to the Old Ball Coach, to cut Skab. "Dat grot had a lot of pluck and with a more finely-tuned team might have be successful, but we just didn't have the arms in our backfield to get him the ball," Hallaz declared at the final press conference of the season.

We'll see if those decisions bear fruit...or are just more scraps to toss on the Heap!

Fresh off the heap...
• It looks like the ladies like Samurai! The reigning DPoY was featured in Muscle and Orkness, receiving a four-page spread!
• Rumor has it Coach Hallaz has been providing some of his players with stickum for their gloves...not sure what that's about...
• Krot is still trying to live up to his brother's success. Watch for some particularly powerful swings this week

Taken from "The Pat", official magazine for Backstab alumni:

As you all know, Backstab's College for Aspiring Tyrants has taken great pride in its prowess on the Blood Bowl field in recent times, and we are delighted to announce this will now continue beyond the school playing fields with the formation of Old Backstabonians. The team has been entered into the GitP Blood Bowl Manager Cup, where we are confidently anticipating scooping up the Most Unjustifiably Arrogant trophy among many others.

Former college legend Harais Flamen has taken on the captaincy and had a few words for his fellow Alumni. Flash said "While we are looking to uphold our fine tradition for unwarranted violence and bloodthirsty abandon, we're hoping to show a rounded style of game in which we move the ball on quickly to leave the lumbering oafs we'll be playing in our wake. As such, I've been working very hard on my distributing game, and will be concentrating more on directing the team than making the big plays myself."

The first game will be against the Sultans of Slaughter. Supporters are advised to bring nose pegs, smelling salts, and their favourite knife to give them a rousing welcome.

Two things:

1 - Brillanté's logo can now be seen in my post in the Team Managment thread, courtesy of Tastier (MAJ). Although I've contacted him about doing some changes, from my point of view he qualifies for the Community Service reward.

2 - I know I saw it, but now I can't find it anywhere, where's the post that has the days of the week and time limits for inducements, game plans, publications, etc?

First post of the team management thread, although usually we leave these kinds of posts for that thread.

Rick Branch:
... and that's what happens when you send a dwarf to do an elf's job, folks. You heard it here first, on Leaf News Network. Now, we say hello to Alan Roundwood, our sports commentator. And you're not here to talk about acorn tossing this time, are you?

Mid Season Report

Hello everyone, this is McHermano. I was a thrower, but I was fired... and looks like Triston is going to be fired as well. Well, Meredith will surely be kind with him, but who cares? Looks like skaven throwers have little luck. Whatever.

Time for mid season report. Let's do it with some songs...

Am I evil? 2/10

No, we aren't. A couple of kills, but bashing is still an issue. Last match vs. MAJ showed that we are really poor against bashing teams. Well, we are runners, but AI makes the Gutter Runners throw block... shakes his head

Ride the lightning 7/10

Run baby, run! Triston has a good RY score and we did an hat trick. If just Mer was able to persuade Triston to pass that !*#@ ball...

Creeping Death 9/10

Plagues. One after the other. Badger waiting the end of match was a BAD idea, Triston not passing, blitzers bashed out of field as pebbles... aaaaand finally Experiment IV nearly killed. An humiliating defeat. And don't forget field effects: every single match is run with the opposite effect. Are we in need of +1 AV for a match vs a bashing team? Play at their home. Are we playing vs. halfling? We protect them with the bonus, making them score with a were-halfling!

Master of Puppets 7/10

The coach? Who's really the coach? Meredith is powerless. Dr. Badger is experimenting as a mad scientist, careless about the team. Leriel? Where is it?
And... where's the dream of winning a season?!?! Where's the dream we are been after?

Of Wolf and Man 1/10

Were-skavens. So far just Mister Tea underwent the transformation. And he was useless. Not a single successful block. Not a casualty. Never get the ball or tried to behave as a ballcarrier.
On the opposite, were-halfling manage to score. And humiliate us again.

Fade to black 6/10

I am tired, even as a factotum. We are sad. Meredith is getting mad. Badger escaped kidnapping Rudy and Annie's child. Depressing. REALLY depressing.

Sometime Mer is thinking about disbanding... we will see.

Don't Tread on Me 9/10

So be it
Threaten no more
To secure peace is to prepare for war

We get knocked down, but we get up again
You're never gonna keep we down!

We are facing a difficult path. Few points. A bashed team. AI that don't use throwers for lanch the ball. But we are skaven and we are not giving up!
I'm back with my rats!

Brillanté: the reasons behind the success

For this issue, Blood Illustrated brings you a full dossier on Brillanté's surprising first half on it's debut season.

As you know, we've been following the Wood Elves since day one, with interviews to manager Xapi and several of their key players, who have always been ready for our questions and controversial on their answers.

The Results

The standings for Division B speak for themselves, Brillanté has been able to top the rankings since their debut match, and has a comfortable two match difference on the runner ups. Their only loss against incumbent champions Talabheim Eagles, a match decided on the Throwers expertise, where Armbuster had an incredible performance, can't outshine the five wins, four against divisional opponents, and a draw in a casualty ridden match. Also of note is the balance between defensive, passing and running touchdowns, wich shows a remarkable versatility for these agile elves.

The Manager

Xapi has been a constant source of depression and negativity whenever a microphone is put near his mouth, but it must be said that his team has consistently played an offensive game, going always for the opponent endzone, sometimes even forgoing the safety of his players. This explains the fact that Brillanté wasn't left scoreless for a single match this season, and the team has accumulated the most completed passes of the Cup. Also of note, with the exception of Star Player Action Week, Xapi has decided not to use any star players, trusting his own men to do what is needed, and specially, giving them the experience they will need for the matches to come.

The Players

We start our round up of the players with the Catchers, Salvat and Betty. They have complemented each other real well, as although Betty has surpassed Salvat in Touchdowns, many of Betty's chances came from loose balls picked up by Salvat, who then handed the ball off to Betty for the score. Consistently throughout the season, both catchers have always made rival defenses insecure, by going deep into opposing territory as soon as the ball was kicked, but where always willing to go back and aid the lineelves when things got tough.

Now for the Throwers, Wilson was able to make a big imprint on his first three games, pushing the elves to three wins with 4 completitions, but for game 4, he lost his hands to sorcery. We're still unsure if he has gotten them back, as he hasn't contributed with a single succesful pass since then. Sergio Denis took throwing duties, and had a great performance in game 5 versus the Low-Down Dirty Rats, but for the last two games he stood at the shadow of Wilson. We hope the All-Star game sees Wilson back in form, because the elves require a top quality thrower to make their game shine.

The latest additions to the team, Wardancers Milkteeth and Mist, came to supply a lack of defensive capabilities, and truly diversified the play style, bringing in several defensive touchdowns to the table.

As for the linelves, we have to give props to the murderous Steak, and Don Fernando, who caught an unexpected interception to win the match against the rats. Also, two of these brave elves, Tatú and Bloodclot, have succumbed to death on the field, but never let down their fans, as they gave all they had to the very end.

The future

Brillanté are looking at a second half of the season where, barring a catastrophe, they will qualify for the playoffs. So, for the upcoming seven matches, it is expected for Xapi to continue to focus on player development, and to be cautious of injuries that might stunt a player's development.

The playoffs are still far off, and it's hard to say how this team will cope with a do-or-die match, but we're certain, it will be entertaining to watch.

Anlec Razors Mid-Season Report

The team reaches halfway through the season on the back of a twelve-game undefeated streak in league play stretching back to the All-Star game of Season V. Can this unprecedented run of form for a vitally unchallenged team be continued? Is this all part of a plan or are the team just lurching from match to match like valets who've been at their masters' brandy? Is this the most skilled group of dark elf players ever assembled, or has the quality of opposition declined? Is the coach a genius, or a very lucky monkey?

These are the questions to which the public demands answers, and we certainly aren't the people to answer them. We can however try to give some idea of how the team has done to date and offer advice for the future.

Offence

The team has scored in every match, an excellent record, although most matches remain low-scoring, which is a disappointment. When Underworld, human and even daemonic teams are scoring four or five touchdowns a match one would hope that an offence of the Razors' calibre could run in a few more. The team needs to work on making more of its ball possession.

Rating: Three cigarette-holders

Defence

The team retains its proud tradition of allowing the opposition to score if they show sufficient spirit, with only DIRE missing out. It's good to see that the dangerous instincts of some of the coaching staff have been reined in, with the team focussed on going forward, and not too bothered about tracking back to see off opposing runners.

Rating: Five pencil moustaches

Professionalism

The team's leading player remains a former professional, although it is heartening to see that since giving up his mercenary ways he has improved immeasurably, and this is a true marker of the success of the team's philosophy. It is very satisfying to see Sir Aubern performing well, too, as he was a highly promising schoolboy player. Even better, some proper chaps have clearly been induced to join the league following the team's example, and the match in the third week was a true classic, Blood Bowl as it should be played. In the best spirit, both teams went home knowing that they had taken part, and it didn't matter who had won. Which was fortunate, since neither of them did. We can hopefully look forward to more of the same throughout the remaining season.

Rating: Two kind hearts and a coronet

Old Backstabonians Half-Term Report

Here at OBs, we are rather unused to admitting that anything might, in fact, be equal to us. While duly noting the appalling social graces, disturbing hygenic practices, and generally atrocious lack of breeding shown by OBs rivals this season so far, it has to be allowed that they are in fact, rather good at Blood Bowl.

In fact, results indicate that they might even be better.

It was acknowledged and dismissed at the Board of Governors meeting that entering a team into an established team full of veteran teams might lead to difficulties. Ironically, it is the veteran teams that have to date posed OBs the least problems. It seems the prospect of the TV cameras has persuaded the players to lift their game. Draws against Da Monsters and the Razors, as well as a notable victory over the Eagles, shows the spirit OBs have when pressed upon. Sadly, however, this has not been the norm. Only Mistress De Clar has stood up as a player to be relied on time and time again, and the Board of Governors has expressed grave misgivings at the ease with which Pellak is bribing his way to MvPs.

Sadly, coaching has been a problem this season, with attempts to play a rushing game at all time looking one dimensional. Whether to incorporate a passing game has been recommended as a discussion of some urgency by the Board of Governors. This goes particularly true in light of recent and horrific injury problems which has seen OBs forced to rely on, well, outsiders.

As such, the Board cannot be moved to give too much optimism or praise for the current situation, and urgently recommends that all members of OBs reconsider their level of result aimed for.

Or their family gets it.

LOW-DOWN DIRTY RATS - MID SEASON REPORT

It's the mid-point of the second season in the league for LDR, at this point last season things looked grim; what has this season held for them?

Offense

Touchdowns scored
With four fast runners and two passing options we ought to be putting the ball in the end-zone at will. With 13 scores in 7 matches this isn't too shabby but there's still work to be done to catch up with Brillanté and SSS. 7/10

Passing
Only 3 successful passes in 7 matches (approximately 28 passages of play); T.P. was brought in to enhance our passing game but it doesn't seem to be emerging. 3/10

Rushing
Sometimes it beggars belief; we are running in touchdowns and only 3 of the 13 have come from passes, yet we're in the bottom half of the list in terms of yards rushed. It was understandable that no one player has a high total, the honours are spread across the team pretty well, but we seem to be running in short bursts. 5/10

Offense MVP
This is hard to call, three of our gutter runners have 4 touchdowns each (and Krusty has lost the details of their individual rushing yards)!

Defense

Casualties, KOs and Kills
Propping up the bottom of the rankings on casualties, with even D Beanz only clocking up a couple. We aren't a bashy team, but there are squisher players out there than our rats! 1/10

Touchdowns conceded
As you would expect from a team in the middle of the table at this point we have conceded our share of touchdowns; with almost half of them coming from teams fielding rats against us! We're facing fewer high-scoring teams in the second half so perhaps we can stem the tide! 4/10

Defense MVP
Unfortunately no-one springs to mind here; Stomper got hurt early one and D Beanz and Biter aren't making much of an impact on the opposition.

Overall

Player Performance
With one of the lower SPPs gained figures in season so far, it is the offense that is adding all the value to the team; the glory is being spread amongst the runner meaning no-one is leaping forward. 6/10

Spectacle
We've been involved in some of the games with the highest crowd figures and the highest match ratings in the season; so at least the fans want to watch us (even if we are losing). 9/10

Support Staff
Not one single edition of the Gutter Press has been published this year, Gammon has yet to be seen around the stadium despite his salary being paid each week! The Tanya's seem to be a little less interested in the team this year; possibly due to Krusty's presence around the HQ and as for BDR, he's been in the Boss' office a lot recently and he hasn't left looking happy. In fact, only Sorexa seems to be adding any value to the team this year, but even then he hasn't managed to prevent any of the truly serious injuries in the squad. 2/10

Coaching
Darktail (AKA Delia) has been trying a few things this year although keeping to a theme. Not having to deal with about half the roster being maimed or killed in the first two week has certainly helped, he is certainly maturing and gaining in confidence amongst his peers. Rumour has it that he is a strong contender for the Division B coach slot for this year's mid-season match up.

Thoughts for the future
The team needs to look no further than its own motto to see how it needs to develop in the coming weeks!

Remember folks - Eagles may fly, but Rats don't get sucked in to jet engines (whatever they are?)!
