What would the characters' musical preferences be? Just for fun
We've had a lot of heavy debate lately about characters' sexualities, the hamfistedness of plot points, the relevance of this, that, and the other thing, etc. etc. ad nauseum.
Now while it's fine to talk about sexuality sexuality sexuality, it isn't exactly the lightest topic, either.
So let's make this thread something lighter, something fun, and yet OotS related.
What music would the characters listen to if they were in our world? I'm not talking about "theme music" for the characters here -- I mean, what would be their favorite songs at the top of their playlist on their MP3 player?
If you're feeling really ambitious, maybe you'd like to add a line or two of explanation as to why they'd listen to it, when they'd listen to it, whatever. Just to add a little interest and maybe spark a little back-and-forth discussion.
One final note: although I obviously can't tell anyone what to do, let me issue a plea to try to keep this friendly, lighthearted, and good-humored. Let's have fun here!
My first suggestion:
Though this is really low-hanging fruit, I'd like to suggest that Tarquin would listen to George Thorogood's "Bad to the Bone" -- admittedly, it's fairly close to a theme song, too, but it seems like something he'd listen to remind himself of what a hell of a fellow he is and get himself energized for his latest seduction attempt.Spoiler
So the song runs on, with shift and change,
Through the years that have no name,
And the late notes soar to a higher range,
But the theme is still the same.
Man's battle-cry and the guns' reply
Blend in with the old, old rhyme
That was traced in the score of the strata marks
While millenniums winked like campfire sparks
Down the winds of unguessed time. -- 4th Stanza, The Bad Lands, Badger Clark

Re: What would the characters' musical preferences be? Just for fun
Personally I think he would prefer Sympathy for the Devil, because that's how he imagines himself. A man of wealth and taste, who also just happens to be a terrible person.
“Evil is evil. Lesser, greater, middling, it's all the same. Proportions are negotiated, boundaries blurred. I'm not a pious hermit, I haven't done only good in my life. But if I'm to choose between one evil and another, then I prefer not to choose at all.”

Re: What would the characters' musical preferences be? Just for fun
I'll grab another low-hanging fruit and suggest that Elan is a Beatles fan.
Vaarsuvius seems like the kind of person who would listen to classical genre music, possibly while researching new spells. Maybe Durkon would too, although some evidence suggests he's fond of Led Zeppelin (along with most other dwarves).
Roy, Belkar, and Haley I find harder to peg, though I can easily imagine Belkar and Haley listening to pop music.

Re: What would the characters' musical preferences be? Just for fun
NWOBHM and possibly R&B for Durkon. Thrash metal for Belkar (though he would also have some of the NWOBHM, just tnowhere near as dominant), and probably also gangsta rap. Classical for V (I'm going with Barqoue period). Classic rock, alt rock, and country for Elan, and classic rock, alt rock, and early '90s hip hop for Haley. Roy would be classic rock and NOWBHM (the lighter stuff, most likely) with some Blues Brothers-style R&B.
And even though you didn't ask, I'm going with the theme song for the order as Run To The Hills, just for the lulz.Cuthalion's art is the prettiest art of all the art. Like my avatar.

Re: What would the characters' musical preferences be? Just for fun
When You're Evil (Voltaire): I can almost hear Xykon singing this in his hollow skeletal voice
Stars (Les Miserables): Miko would probably not even know of the latter half of the musical, much less the dark reprise of this song.

I feel Thog's the type for Happy Hardcore. And with all the trash metal for Belkar, I think he'd listen to a lot of those movie-like epic rock or pop too.

Re: What would the characters' musical preferences be? Just for fun
"When You're Evil" is such a Disney villain song, though, to the point that Voltaire once linked to a YouTube music video made out of it and clips of Scar from The Lion King. The subservience also doesn't seem to fit Xykon.
Spoiler: Start of DarknessBesides, when he was a teenager, he had a poster for My Alchemical Romance. Now that he's undead, the screams of the dying are are like stand-up comedy albums to Xykon.
If anyone is listening to Voltaire, I think it is Tarkin. Tarkin would be listening instead to more recent material, such as "Riding a Black Unicorn Down the Side of an Erupting Volcano While Drinking from a Chalice Filled with the Laughter of Small Children." He also wouldn't get it, and plan accordingly for the threat outlined in "The Mechanical Girl."

Re: What would the characters' musical preferences be? Just for fun
Considering Xykon character, he doesn't fit me as a metal guy actually... with his taste for fun and irreverent attitude, I would imagine him listening to songs "Sexx Laws" from Beck style. (whily slaughting a full legion of hobgoblins for the thrill)
As for belkar, I would bet "Born to be wild" as a theme songLast edited by Brumagris; 2015-01-29 at 08:42 AM.

Re: What would the characters' musical preferences be? Just for fun
Elan would listen to those cheesy Epic Power Metal acts like Rhapsody of Fire or Stratovarius.
Zz'dtri is a Funeral Doom Metal fan.
Belkar likes rap.
Redcloak would probably enjoy classical music.
Black Metal for Malack.
The Snarl likes Grindcore. There must be some sense of order - personal, political or dramatic - and if no one else is going to bring it to this world, I will.

Re: What would the characters' musical preferences be? Just for fun
Roy: 80s hair metal (Whitesnake, Survivor, etc.)
Haley: She hasn't really kept up with popular music in the last few years, but in her teens, she was really into pop punk (Blink-182, Yellowcard, Taking Back Sunday). She heard 5 Seconds of Summer recently billed as "pop punk" and was horrified.
Elan: Elan likes comedy albums, especially stand-up. Mike Birbiglia and Bo Burnham are some of his favorites.
V: Prog rock (Genesis, ELO, Dream Theater)
Durkon: Irish drinking songs. Well, drinking songs in general, but the Irish have so darn many of them!
Belkar: Pirate metal (Alestorm, Running Wild, etc.) One of Belkar's favorite daydreams involves a dominated Elan in a pirate costume.

I'll do this a bit differently, and list who I think is each character's favorite musical artist:
Roy: Frank Sinatra
Haley: The Cure
Elan: Weird Al Yankovic
Belkar: Judy Garland
V: Mike Oldfield
Durkon: Billy Joel
Blackwing: The Byrds

Re: What would the characters' musical preferences be? Just for fun
Here is my run down of the main six
Roy- Definitly a Jazz man. A life that stressful? he needs to kick back and relax
Elan- the Songs from the disney movies for sure. He's been singing "let it go" for months now, its actually hurting the parties rolls now, they hate it so much.
Haley- Her father raised her on classic rock, But her favorite singer would have to be Bon Jovi. "Runaway" really spoke to her, ya know?
Belkar- Screamo all day everyday. hes not sure what they're saying, but the music video has lots of blood, so hes into it.
V- Only listens to classical music. the rest is illogical nonsense
Durkon- Before turning into a vampire, he was a closet one Direction fan. This is actually why he got thrown out of the drarven lands. His greatest fear was that belkar would find out.The King demands . . . Cake!

Re: What would the characters' musical preferences be? Just for fun
In her youth, I think Haley was definitely a Bauhaus/ Joy Division/ Siouxsie and the Banshees kind of gal. I bet she still has a Sisters of Mercy t-shirt somewhere. Now, I'm thinking more of the indie rock and baroque pop stuff. Also, I bet she'd like Garbage.
With the others, I'm gonna have to go with the majority. Roy's probably into jazz and soul/R&B stuff, MAYBE a little funkier when he's feeling it. Durkon's all about the classic hard rock. Thunderstruck is probably his jam. Belkar's into aggressive thrash metal and grindcore.
This is a fun topic!

Re: What would the characters' musical preferences be? Just for fun
Haha! you've got a point. Ive been working on the villians, but im still trying to work out a few
Xykon- Normally he doesnt really care for music, one of the disadvantages of not having ears. but ever since the take over of Azure City, He keeps on getting these ridiculous J-pop songs stuck in his head.
MitD- MitD has a fondness for Weird Al. No ones sure why. It could be that he enjoys the clever wordplay, or it could be that he simply has never heard a good joke before in his life.
Redcloak-An Oprah man through and through. That fat lady always brings tears to hiseyeseye.
Tarquin- Tarquin likes to start every morning with the Imperial March from Star Wars. It really gets him pumped before work
Thog- As we saw in the Arena, Thog is a Queen fan to the end. Everytime he goes into a Rage, "Dont stop me now" starts playing in his headThe King demands . . . Cake!

I can't stop laughing because either one works in context (with the exception of Oprah not actually being a singer as far as I am aware, but for all I pay attention she could be a musical genius)If my text is blue, I'm being sarcastic. But you already knew that, right?

Re: What would the characters' musical preferences be? Just for fun
Belkar - Showtunes (He only poses for the heavy metal album covers)
Elan - Listens to everything, but has a preference for classic rock
Durkon - Led Zeppelin by cultural preference, country music by choice. They're the only ones that speak correctly.
Roy - Secretly, Elan's music has grown on him, but he won't admit it.
V - Music is a distraction from my studies.
Haley I can't quite decide, sadly...
Tarquin - Anything by John Williams (inlcuding the Imperial March, of course) or Danny Elfman. They know how to set a scene with their music.

Re: What would the characters' musical preferences be? Just for fun
While that does reflect the Order's most historically successful strategy, I think Redcloak has already got dibs on that one, given his history.
I'd say Everybody Wants To Rule The World is a somewhat obvious one for Tarquin. He could also nick The Rains of Castamere from another similarly-named tyrant/mastermind/father of the year.
Oh, and Ho Thanh gets Thunder Child.
