Kaylee's mouth is open, ready to reply, when there's a sudden loud CHUNK and the event is plunged into deep darkness - even the lights around the exterior of the building are cut off, with the only light now coming from the various assorted phones. The emergency flood lights, normally activated when the power shuts off, are as broken as the main lights.

    Well, this can't be good.

There are a few panicked screams and a lot of loud conversation before a "Everyone remain calm! Do not panic!" is shouted above the conversation, drawing attention to several police officers who have taken the stage and are holding flashlights. Their efforts are slightly successful, but people are still attempting to hurry to the doors as fast as possible.

Even with the light from the cops on the stage, someone asks the inevitable question: Hey, who killed the lights? (new scene aspect).

Alan's smirk faded and morphed into a frown as the lights around him go off and screams emanate from the building. Turning around, he saw that all lights in the building had been switched off as well, the area was shrouded in the night's darkness.

    Right, this is trouble.

Reception to and from the building had been cut and now the lights went off, that sounded an awful lot like sabotage to him. His frown deepened as he recalled that the Big Hero 6 weren't in town at the moment, making this a perfect opportunity for any would-be supervillain to try and have his way.

Alan grit his teeth at the thought, there had been a surge of so-called villains abusing technology in the wake of Yokai's stunt, it annoyed him to no end that innovations were misused in such a way. He stalked back into the exhibition hall, armor forming around him in the darkness where no one could see.

Bobby blinks as the lights go out, then grimaces as the panic starts. "Crud. This is going to get crazy quickly."

Then he has an idea. Good thing my tech's battery-powered, he muses as he taps out a couple instructions on his mobile screen. Then he raises the mic to his mouth and speaks in his best "Trust me, I'm official, honest" voice:

"Ladies and gentlemen, we appear to be experiencing some technical difficulties. Please proceed to the nearest exit in a calm and orderly fashion."

Projected through the sound system which had until recently been sending out mad beats, the announcement echoes throughout the building, overcoming even the panicked screams.

Miki's breath seizes for a moment when the lights shut off. She didn't particularly care for the dark, at least not the omnipresent sort that comes from being in a large and powerless building at night. She relaxes a bit as the flashlights come out and her eyes adjust. With the relaxation comes clearer thinking; Miki toggles the low-light mode on her visor.

It looked like most of the rubble her spheres had gone to had been shifted into less precarious positions. With a thought, she calls the spheres into her bag. She locates Kaylee in the darkness. Not particularly wanting to show off her tech (it would look a bit suspicious to be prepared with something that functioned as nightvision goggles in the midst of an unexpected blackout, after all), she puts the visor away and retrieves a small flashlight from her bag.

With the light provided by her small but powerful light, Miki makes her way over to where she had seen Kaylee. She says in a deadpan voice, "Well, I'd say this convention was a stunning success."

The sudden plunge of the room into darkness startled Kaylee, but she was more concerned with locating her suddenly AWOL girlfriend than the general panic that infected the expo. She quickly pulled out her phone and switched on the powerful flashlight feature it had, casting the illuminated device around to find where the shorter girl had gone. Purple hair couldn't be that hard to spot, even in the dark, right?

    ...right?

She turned to give her delayed explanation to her Lee. "I, erm, I lost someone. She...she came in with me a minute ago. Purple hair? Miki, is her name, I mean, her name is Miki, and we just...I don't want to lose her."

She heard Bobby's announcement - she could hear him giving it close to her, so she knew it was him - and the crowd settles, but the tension underneath the evacuation is palpable. The place seems crazy on edge, but given what had happened, that made a great deal of sense. Kaylee herself was starting to really worry.

"Well, I'd say this convention was a stunning success."

Kaylee nearly jumped three feet into the air at hearing Miki beside her, and she whirled around to shine the light on her now-present friend. A sigh of relief escaped her, and she quickly hugged the girl tight. "There you are, I thought...well, I dont know, and I know you were okay, like you didn't get crushed, but you vanished and I worried, and I knew I shouldn't have worried because it was stupid and I know you can take care of yourself, and I had nothing to worry about, and then it got all dark an-"

She cut herself off, taking in a deep breath and letting it out before releasing the girl and looking down, finding her eyes even in the omnipresent darkness. "You're safe. I'm very happy you are. Let's get out of here, Miki. I'm...feeling pretty hungry."

"Oh, don't worr" she started in reply, assuring her friend and as Miki announced herself, after listening to their conversation, she continued "See! She found you! Have fun, I'm going to look at the circuit breaker." she proceeded to announce, going off through the crowd to where she knew the circuit breaker for the hall was, weaving her way through the orderly crowd.

Alan let out a breath of relief as Bobby's voice sounds throughout the building, in his rush into the building, he'd forgotten that everyone else would be rushing out of the building and had been struggling to get through the chaotic crowd. The crowd seemed to gain a measure of order with Bobby's announcement and he managed to slip into the exhibition hall.

I don't actually have any idea how to find the person who did this.

He grimaces at the realization, he'd been caught up in his anger and forgot that very important fact. Seeings two flashlights being switched on ahead of him, Alan breaks into a jog and lets his armor fade away, quickly reaching the group once again. "I've called the authorities about the pillar collapsing, they should be sending more people here right now."

Bobby carefully mutes his mic. "Something not good," he says vaguely. "Either interference on the phones or the lights going out I could accept on their own, but together..." He shakes his head. "I've seen enough movies to know something's going down."

He carefully turns on his own phone's light, then starts picking up his speakers. He doesn't want to leave these things laying around, in case somebody's planning to pull a Callaghan. He pauses as Lee jogs past.

    THE SITUATION:

Kaylee, Miki, Dieter, and Alan are all by the crashed pillar.
    Bobby is by his equipment.
Lee is on her way to the circuit breaker.
The lights are off, the people are barely unpanicked, and the police have dispersed themselves throughout the building, trying to escort people to the doors around the rubble.
Reception is still down inside the perimeter.

As people move towards the exits, speaking in hushed tones, there's suddenly a small rumbling noise and the ground distinctly trembles. All motion and noise stops as everyone does a collective, silent "did you feel that too?"

    Then, hell breaks loose.

The rumbling of the ground begins in earnest, with fissures and factures breaking open along the disturbed ground. Pillars start to crack as dust falls from the disturbed ceiling rafters, and pandemonium strikes as screams and shouts echo through the confined space. This is, undeniably, a massive and poorly timed earthquake. Exhibits fall, either to pieces or to the floor, as the cops lose any semblance of control over the place and calls of "EARTHQUAKE!" sound.

Some people run for whatever cover they can find, while others continue to make a beeline for the exits. Earthquakes in California are not exactly super uncommon, but this one feels like the big one as the building's foundation is ripped and torn into chunks and cracks.

Lee's trip to the breaker just got that much more hazardous, Bobby's attempt to get his speakers is somewhat disturbed, and the rest of the ground finds themselves relatively out in the open when the quaking hits, gathered as they were around the debris.

He figured that the worst that could happen was that some wannabe villain got the chance to steal some tech while everyone was evacuating the building, clearly he was wrong. Alan cursed in annoyance as it becomes apparent that mother nature was a spiteful mistress. "We should get out of here!" He yelled.

Armoring up once again, he takes advantage of the fact that his armor is in fact a construct of his rings and levitates around three feet above the ground. Then he realizes that he and the two girls beneath him would still be crushed if the building came down on them. Thinking quickly, he creates a simple rectangular sheet of graphene above their heads, three cubic meters in size, sacrificing thickness for larger breadth and length to shield them.

Dieter liked to read. Today, he felt that was a good thing: he remembered a particular bit he'd read on earthquakes, and in such cases one should always dive under something that'd be able to withstand falling debris. When in the dark, though, it was a good idea not to move about too much: the boy knew that much at least. When the quaking began, he already located the nearest table: the one he'd been awkwardly standing by while all of the pillar breaking and heroics were going on.

Dieter crawled under the table and made himself as small as he possibly could. That'd avoid the worst of it, right?

Miki barely has time to return the embrace and mumble out "Yeah, me too. Sorry for vanishing like that. I, ah, didn't want anyone seeing my gravity spheres flying in and doing their thing. They're in my bag now." before the shaking started. The moment between the first shaking and the all-consuming panic seemed infinitely long though.

Miki grits her teeth again. Now there were people running amok in confined, dark space, and there was likely to be debris falling, and she couldn't keep track of it all, and there was too much going, and Kaylee was going to hurt. . .

    NO

She shifts to the side as a reporter, evident from his equipment, rushes past. Good timing too, as a chunk of concrete falls from the ceiling. But. . .it should have hit her; that angle was all wrong. She glances up to notice what looked be a sheet of . . . graphene? That was weird. Where did that come from?

Alan's quick thinking spares the group near him the brunt of the blow. Lee, however, is not so lucky - on her mad dash to the breaker, a chunk falls from a nearby pillar and clips her in the leg, sending her tumbling to the ground. Bobby's save by the police officer is expertly timed.

The earthquake itself is still going, and the cops are split between evacuating people and trying to keep order inside the still-shaking building.

You notice the above, with the extra detail that these guys are actively taking things and shoving them into the bags. You gain a single use of the boost Stop Those Thieves!. In addition, you see a small distortion in the air by Bobby and his display, like a heat distortion.

Alan's suggestion that they get out of here is a good one, but the figures over by the displays are of a somewhat greater concern for Kaylee. This had gone from great to bad to worse in no time flat, and she was fairly sure now that the myriad of technical problems that had just happened were far from accidental. She couldn't just let the gear be taken - this was even worse than Callaghan's duplicity and theft.

Still, being in the dark, with the earthquake...the odds didn't look good. Fortunately, she was used to terrible odds.

"HEY! THIEVES!" she shouts out, shining the light from her cell phone onto the exhibits. Several blues turn and shine their flashlights at the masked people, who respond by ducking behind various display cases. The police react accordingly, drawing sidearms and ordering the thieves to come out with their hands up, while a few more talk into radios - then look at the radios in disgust before simply shouting to their back-up outside.

Kaylee looks back to the group as the standoff happens. "Miki, help Bobby pack up his gear then see if you can get to somewhere safe. Alan, get Dieter out of here and come in a different way to flank these thieves, keep them from leaving. I'm going to get Lee. We're not letting this happen, not here, not tonight, and not when we can help. Any questions?"

Then Kaylee shouts for him to get Dieter out of the exhibition hall, "I'd have to get rid of the sheet above us if I'm going to get him out of here!" He yelled back, looking around to see where the awkward teen had ran off to in the panic of the earthquake, finding him huddled underneath a table. Right, he'd have to get him out of here while keeping him safe.

Alan mentally selected the template for a sphere, hollowed it out, scaled it up to fit a human comfortably and turned the frame into titanium. Then he layered the outer surface in graphene and the inner walls with thick padding and cushion, a car seat forming in the middle. "Get in Dieter, I'll get you out of here."

He was clearly worried about all of this, seemingly hesitant to climb into the randomly fabricated pod. Maybe she'd been a bit too quick to dismiss him out of hand. But he'd be damned thrice over before he let some tall-necked wind-blowing arrogant giraffe tell him he was a little kid and needed to stay the hell out!

Ah! That looked useful. Dieter grabbed a random piece of tech off the floor. Looked like a small, black box, with a small button on it. Would probably be useful somehow. Dieter pressed the button and hoped it'd be something useful.

Alan watched the drama unfold with mild impatience, Dieter wanting to stay and help was fine, but there were filthy thieves to stop at the moment and any time spent arguing was time that could be put to use dealing with them. "Sure, pick up a random invention that you have no idea about and use it, that's a smart idea!" He muttered sarcastically, turning to Kaylee. "If he doesn't want to leave, let him help, I'm going to get them out of cover now, I'll have to remove the sheet above our heads, so be careful."

And with that he flies, circling the exhibition hall at thirty miles per hour with the graphene sheet and pod following behind him, merging into a large hand of titanium and graphene. He could have kept the padding and cushion from the pod, but Alan was feeling rather annoyed at the situation so he turned it into more titanium. The hand caught, pushed and punched thieves out of cover as he circled around the hall, probably breaking a few of their bones in the process with the speed he was moving at.

Kaylee would love to assert that her words to Dieter had been intended to get him moving and into gear, to inspire him into action in any way possible, but that would've been a lie, and that never helped anyone.

She'd apologize to him later, after all this craziness was done, provided they were both still alive.

When Dieter presses the button on the strange box, nothing appears to happen for a brief second. Then, the box physical shoots up into the air, flips around a few time, and lands on the ground - whereupon it erupts into a light show. Spotlights and moving (non-harmful) lasers pop out of all angles, confetti shoots into the air a few times, and noisemakers sound from the hand-held box - along with some small, loud poppers that get shot into the air before detonating with a loud, well, POP.

Most of the thieves turn to Dieter as a result of the distraction from the party-in-a-box, and he is standing quite exposed in the open. Alan's buzzing about also serves only to annoy them, and as all are watching, the thieves begin to take aim with thick, tubular devices that have until now gone unused. The cops take advantage of the situation to begin moving up.

    Dieter

File this under T for Terrible, was Dieter's first thought. Oh crap, was his second thought, when he realised he'd attracted the attention of the thieves! Or whatever they were. Probably thieves. That's what someone said, right?

Without even thinking twice about it, Dieter hit the deck the moment he spotted the unknowns aiming something-or-other at him. Jumping right into all the rubble he'd been standing on was painful, but Dieter was pretty sure that those gun-like things were probably going to be a lot more painful if he just let them hit him. He made himself as small and flat as possible, hoping for once his size would be beneficial to him.

Alan raised an eyebrow underneath his helmet, watching the lightshow that Dieter had caused, not realizing that he had stopped flying around the exhibition hall in his distraction. It was only when he took a look around the room that he realized that the thieves were now aiming tubular devices at him. Cursing under his breath, Alan transformed the floating hand he had used to harass the thieves into a thick sphere around him.

Dieter scrambles underneath a nearby expo table just in time - there's what sounds like a compressed air canister exploding, then he feels something whoosh over the table, shoving air out of the way.

Alan has a better view, in a sense - he sees what can only be best described as a ball of air fly over where Dieter had been standing minutes ago. It moves away from the student, impacting a table past that and sending it flipping and flying through the air. It lands and fractures upon impact, a useless wreck.

And, of course, one of them just aimed at him.

Fortunately, he was ready. His sphere takes the assault well, the air cannon unable to penetrate his defenses, and he manages to dissipate the force with little trouble.

Some of the other police are not so lucky, and soon more than a few blues are flying backwards, spiraling through the air and landing hand on their backs as the mysteriously well-equipped thieves continue to wreak havoc.

A few of them are providing cover for a group of three whom appear to be setting up some kind of device near the exhibits. It's large, back, and has several pistons and spikes that serve as feet, probably for holding it fast to the ground.

More cops are flooding into the room now, and the shooting of actual guns began soon after the shooting of air cannons did. It seems to have gone from bad to worse, and the room is a cacophony of noise - loud gunshots, the sharp hiss-blam of the air cannons, and the myriad screams and shouted orders. The cops were doing their best to converge on the area, but the earthquakes, darkness, sound, and air blasts were doing a good job at keeping them occupied. More than a few of SF's finest are rolling on the ground in pain or unconscious.

Running out of here was no longer an option. Kaylee didn't know what that device was, but she wasn't about to let them get away with it. "Dieter, keep finding stuff to surprise them with! Alan, get close to that device and see if you can get rid of it! I'd rather not let them plant it. And, if you can, cover me - I'm moving in." Bobby and Legs were still getting their bearings. Miki was, for the moment, safe.

Alan's assaulting has also drawn more than a bit of ire from the thieves. Several of them take aim with the air cannons.

She then looks about her for an impromptu shield from the debris of the building.

Interesting weapons, but guns would probably be more efficient. The air cannons had barely even dented his hastily made protective sphere and it seemed that Dieter had managed to avoid being hit as well, the cops were beginning to shoot their own weapons now that the thieves had fired too. Looking around, Alan saw more of the thieves aiming their cannons at him. Well, better me than the rest of them I guess. At least I have armor.

Alan somehow managed to hear Kaylee's orders through the chaos, "On it!" He yelled back, forming an attack plan in his head.

First, he'd have to not get blasted. If Dieter managed to dodge one of those blasts just by throwing himself to the ground, he figured the air cannons probably didn't have any tracking capabilities and were aimed solely by the thieves. That meant that if he could just move quickly enough, the thieves wouldn't be able to aim at him properly.

So he sped off towards the device that was being set up, flying at a 120 miles per hour with the protective sphere still surrounding him. As he flew, he selected the templates for a pole and sphere, making a simple medieval mace out of titanium. Three thieves were setting up the device, it would be a lot harder to set anything up if they had a broken arm. The mace swung at one of the unfortunate thieves' elbow as Alan and his weapon flew by, still at a 120 miles per hour.

He looped around, eyes seeking out Kaylee in the chaos, she had mentioned that she was going to be trying something and would like cover. Well, he didn't like to disappoint.

Miki has had enough of these thieves shooting up the place. All she had wanted was a nice, quiet night. Kaylee was her girlfriend now and these people were
    NOT
    GOING
    TO
    RUIN
    THAT.

She puts on her goggles, and the spheres that had come in earlier rush out of her bag. More of them begin zipping out of the lab. She sends them towards the device the thieves were setting up. One goes inside the device, making its way down the tube. Others stop around the outside. All at once, gravity goes haywire in the area. The one inside the device massively increases the pull of gravity, while the others push away as hard they can - which is quite hard indeed.
