Re: Dreamscarred Press Announces: Path of War Expanded (new thread)
By the way, I favor keeping Anima Mystic separate. I like stat swap archetypes. Makes things easier for me (I'm very generous with class stat swaps).

I also like keeping Anima Mystic separate, for exactly the same reason. Stat swap archetypes make it much easier to build more varied concepts.

Re: Dreamscarred Press Announces: Path of War Expanded (new thread)
I like the idea of the Anima mystic but there are some problems I have noticed. I went through the Runic Mysteries and gave my opinions and some thoughts.
Spoiler: MysteriesConsuming Flame
Nimbus -I think this should either be 1d6 fire damage per attack or just a static 1d6 fire damage to everything within range at the begingin of your turn. As it is this is barely useful.
Flare -Since this costs 1 animus and is a standard action, this dosent seen very good as 1d6 fire damage. What about if you spend the 1 animus and it lets use use the 1d6 Fire damage as an Iterative attack? So it works with BAB and/or Rapid shot?
Blaze -Not sure about this one as the nimbus says it works againsts people who attack you but now in the Blaze it says it engulfs friends and foes and you can ignore a certain amt of allies. This ability dosent make sense.
Pyre -This ability means pretty much nothing as you have to wait 10 rnds without using any animus before this comes online.
Tidal Flood
Nimbus - I like this.
Flare - This is ok, I have no problem with this although I would prefer if it did something like I suggested in Consuming Flame.
Blaze - I like this.
Pyre - This not bad for a 15th lvl ability but has the same problem all the Pyre abilities have... you have to wait 10 rnds without using any animus before this comes online.
Unyielding Stone
Nimbus - I like this
Flare - I will just say this for pretty much all the Flare abilities. I would prefer something like I suggested in the Consuming Flames.
Blaze - I really like this ability. Just to clarify though, does the 20ft radius move with you? I assume yes.
Pyre - Not a bad ability, however, see previous Pyre abilite comments. I would suggest maybe giving something extra for any Pyre Mystery that gives a subtype that dosent really do anything, like earth.
Cascading Wind
Nimbus - I like this
Flare - See previous Flare comments
Blaze - I like this
Pyre - See previous Pyre comments. Also what does it mean that allies take shelter within and recieve benefits? Do they just get your Nimbus and Blaze abilities or can they use flare as well?
United Spirit
Nimbus - Interesting, I like it.
Flare - See previous Flare comments.
Blaze - Interesting, not sure if I like it though.
Pyre - See previous Pyre comments.I like this
Unending Shadow
Nimbus - I like this
Flare -See previous Flare comments.
Blaze - I like this but realize that with this and the nimbus you get 150% of your lvl as a bonus to stealth.
Pyre -See previous Pyre comments.I like this
Relentless Light
Nimbus - Not sure you need to mention that dazzled creatures cannot be further blinded. As far as i know dazzle and blind dont function like shake and frightened.
Flare -See previous Flare comments.
Blaze - I really like this ability
Pyre -See previous Pyre comments.I like this
Dead Scream
Nimbus - Flavorful, I like it.
Flare -See previous Flare comments.
Blaze - Hmm, does this work like the spell fear? Which panicks? or does it work like a fear aura that shakens things? needs clarification.
Pyre -See previous Flare comments.I like this
Frozen Heart
Nimbus - Meh, this is kinda lackluster, thematic, but lackluster.
Flare -See previous Flare comments.
Blaze - This is crazy, I love it.
Pyre -See previous Flare comments.
Iron Hand
Nimbus - Not bad, I like it
Flare -See previous Flare comments.
Blaze - Nice, I like it.
Pyre -See previous Flare comments. Strong abilities, keep in mind this Pyre has no mention of ignoring teammates, so your they may hate you.
Raging Storm
Nimbus - Compare this to Consuming flame.
Flare -See previous Flare comments.
Blaze - I think I like this
Pyre -See previous Flare comments.
As I mentioned in the individual mysteries my biggest problem right now is that the Pyre ability can only be used 10rnds after combat starts and that is only if you use a maneuver every rnd and do not spend a single Animus. This i see as a glaring problem as we all know most combats dont last a full 10 rnds, especially at higher lvls. I also dont like the fact that as I am building Animus I cannot spend any on my abilities.
I think if you are going to leave things they way they are now, then the Pyre abilities should be devastating or change it so there is no threshold to reach in order to use the abilities.
Also, I had mentioned in a previous post that I would have like an Elemental Flux stance that allowed you to use energy attacks as weapon attacks governed by Bab and feats and things, but having finally read the Abimus Mystic I think the Flare abilities should reflect this.
I suggest changing the Flare abilities to you spending 1 Animus and allowing you to use a Ranged energy attack, governed by the Mystery, that works with iterative attacks and feats like rapid shot and things like that. Give it a 30ft range, maybe increase it every 4 or 5 lvls. Not sure whether they should be touch or normal attacks, maybe make the energy attacks touch and the more physical ones doing normal attacks.
I would also like to suggest a couple other things.
First I would rather have les Mysteries. As it is you start with 2 and then gain 3 more. I think it would be more interesting if you started with one and gained no more than 2 more. My reasoning for this is that I see the Mystic more of the general energy user and buffer and the Animus Mystic as more of a focused energy user.
Second, I think it would be a better idea to normalize the Aura ranges. Through all the Mysteries, you have 10ft, 15ft, 20ft, and 30ft, ranges for all sorts of different abilities and especially with so many mysteries available... keeping track of all the auras is gonna be a pain.
Also, as a side note because I just read the Capstone ability and it allows you to use 2 Mysteries at once. Nowhere in the actual Mystery does it mention that you can only use 1 at a time. Unless I am way over tired and didn't see it and it so I apologize.
Anyway, this is my 2 cents. Let me know what you guys think.Last edited by Mathias1313; 2015-02-26 at 05:23 PM.

Re: Dreamscarred Press Announces: Path of War Expanded (new thread)
I'm cross-posting this with the other thread(s) involved and also folding it into the main Lords of the Night document, but I am excited and pleased to announce that Unquiet Grave, an undeath-themed martial discipline, is ready for playtesting. This discipline and an associated Tradition will be featured in Lords of the Night. Have at it!

Re: Dreamscarred Press Announces: Path of War Expanded (new thread)
You've been told wrong. Per Systems and Use in the Path of War initial book:
In the case of a long, drawn-out series of fights, or if a disciple is out of combat entirely, assume that if a character makes no attacks of any kind, initiates no new maneuvers, and is not targeted by any enemy attacks for 1 full minute, he can recover all expended maneuvers.

Hmm. It would be nice to have "using maneuvers out of combat" section in PoW:Ex Systems and Use.

Re: Dreamscarred Press Announces: Path of War Expanded (new thread)
There will not be a "Systems and Use" chapter in this book, I'm afraid, but I will see if there's room to squeeze in a side bar. But yeah, it's not stated that you CAN'T use them, so yes, you can.

Re: Dreamscarred Press Announces: Path of War Expanded (new thread)
By the way, I've been wanting to go through and find some of the really flavor rich combinations of disciplines. For examples
Riven Hourglass + Shattered Mirror: Time and Space bend around you, shaping to your will and desires
Cursed Razor + Eternal Guardian: Master of curses, and manipulator of the battlefield
Cursed Razor + Sleeping Goddess: This is one I thought of while driving. It's less about the disciplines and more about their Traditions. A former member of the Quills who, one day, instead of the voice of Whisper, heard the Singer's voice in his mind. He turned his back on the Quills and took the oath of the Servants of the Secret Hymn, becoming the sworn enemy of the Quills.I follow a general rule: better to ask and be told no than not to ask at all.

Re: Dreamscarred Press Announces: Path of War Expanded (new thread)
Yeah, the ideal class for it is Harbinger, making Veiled Moon an obvious third wheel. I just prefer the thematics of Shattered Mirror.
Oh, and the other combo I want to use is Eternal Guardian and Riven Hourglass. Distorted Clock for my stance, and then activate Oath of Eternity.I follow a general rule: better to ask and be told no than not to ask at all.

Thinking an ophidian would make a perfect mystic. Use naturally psionic to be able to get wisdom to attack from the insightful strike feat so you can pump your DCs without dipping soulknife and being limited to unarmed strikes.

Re: Dreamscarred Press Announces: Path of War Expanded (new thread)
What if bards (and Skald) were expanded using masterpeices instead of an archetype?
Hastati's Marching Orders
Prerequisite: Perform (oratory) 4 ranks.
Cost: Feat or 2nd-level bard spell known.
Effect: Choose one maneuver and one stance of first level from the Piercing Thunder discipline. For the next 10 minutes all allies affected by your bardic performance/raging song gain one maneuver readied and knowledge of these maneuvers and do not need to prepare them. Allies may recover one maneuver by using the aid another action to improve an ally's attack roll or AC. Allies that cease to be affected by your bardic performance/raging song may not initiate these maneuvers, but any expended maneuvers remain expended until recovered. The initiator level for these maneuvers is equal to your level for bardic performance to a maximum of their hit die. While active all bardic performances/raging song cost one extra round per round. This masterpiece may be dismissed as a free action.
Use: 1 bardic performance round, plus one per round (see text)
Activation: Standard action.
The Principes Attack
Prerequisite: Perform (oratory) 7 ranks, Hastati's Marching Orders.
Cost: Feat or 3rd-level bard spell known.
This masterpiece functions as Hastati's Marching Orders, but grants knowledge of an additional second level maneuver from the piercing lance discipline and an additional manuver readied to all allies with at least 3 hit die.
Triarii's Glory
Prerequisite: Perform (oratory) 10 ranks, The Principes Attack.
Cost: Feat or 4th-level bard spell known.
This masterpiece functions as The Principes Attack, but grants knowledge of an additional third level maneuver and stance from the piercing lance discipline and an additional manuver readied to all allies with at least 5 hit die.
(that's just a general writeup to express the idea)Last edited by deuxhero; 2015-02-27 at 08:29 PM.

Re: Dreamscarred Press Announces: Path of War Expanded (new thread)
After having gone through Elemental Flux entirely, I've come up with what is probably my favorite build I've put together using Path of War stuff. Specifically, this:
[Cha-boosting race] Warlord 15, with the trait to swap into Elemental Flux, or joining the Cagebreakers (at least I think they were called that). Gambits known are mostly irrelevant, we just need to have the Unbreakable Gambit. Maneuvers known are likewise mostly irrelevant, because the only one I care about for this build is Zephyr Flux.
Equipment is decidedly not-irrelevant. Defensive items should be bought, Cha-boosting items should be bought. The character's main weapon is a Buffoon's Sword, which only costs 11,310gp to (hideously fail the roll to) make. The key of the build is that the Buffoon's Sword can force a DC 15 Will Save on the character as a free action by attempting to lie.
So, every round, the warlord spends a full-round action using Zephyr Flux to zigzag across the battlefield through his enemies. Then, he'll taunt, or quip, or just mumble in an attempt to lie. His Will save is pretty good at this point, because of Force of Personality, but even if he fails, he'll still recover one maneuver off his Unbreakable Gambit's rake... But hey, that's all he needs, because he's never using another maneuver unless something's gone horribly wrong.
... And if we grab the Master of the Elements Form (that name is incredibly awkward, by the way) stance, then the warlord can spend 100% of his time turned into pure elements, alternating floating in the sky and becoming a terrifying living lightning bolt. Not really super-amazing damage or combat abilities compared to actually spending his actions efficiently, but it's just so coolLast edited by Forrestfire; 2015-02-28 at 02:32 AM.

Re: Dreamscarred Press Announces: Path of War Expanded (new thread)
Hey ErrantX, have you had a chance to look over my thoughts on the Animus Mystic Archetype yet? Its the 3rd post from the top of this Page.
I would like to know your thoughts.
Also, I was planning out a Demon-hand Warlock Warder cause it just sounded cool and seemed to have a cool mechanic, but I caught something disappointing.
The Fiend's Grip you create is considered a Natural weapon only you gave weapon traits. So it functions as a reach weapon which means it doesn't threaten adjacent, ok I can deal with that cause I'm going to have a gauntlet or shield but it still counts as a Primary natural attack and thus I cannot use Iterative attacks with it. Is there any way there could be a note put in that says you can treat it like a weapon as well so that I can use iterative attacks with it?

Re: Dreamscarred Press Announces: Path of War Expanded (new thread)
I'm gonna have some more in depth thoughts on the mystic in a bit.
But I've done a little (weak) playstesting of a few ideas so far and one thing I've been presently surprised about is my ability to pick a race that has some synergy and pick maneuvers that sound fun and appropriate to my concept and still have it work. Good enough balance that just making a character that looks cool to me ends up still having some heft behind them without much digging around to optimize them. There's a few bad things (which are mostly mentioned in the guides) and a few things I think that lean toward having certain must-haves ( harbinger feels like it requires a race with an int bonus to me ) but in general it all feels pretty solid.
On another thought. Is it just me or does Unquiet Grave seem maybe a little too similar to Cursed Razor in design?

Re: Dreamscarred Press Announces: Path of War Expanded (new thread)
Yeah, that's what makes PoW classes fantastic: High optimization floors. You can pick non-optimal races/feats and still come out doing okay. The gap between a halfling and a human is a lot smaller if you compare Zweihander Sentinel Warders with a focus on Primal Fury and Fighters going for THF.
EDIT: Actually, I almost feel Grave is a good tanking discipline. Disciplines seem to fall into categories for what they are primarily about, with some hybrids
Tanking: Tortoise, Guardian (Grave)
Damage: Fury, Dragon, Throne, Blade
Control: Serpent, Razor, Mirror, Veil
for some examples.Last edited by Vhaidara; 2015-02-28 at 09:20 PM.
