Today's Solar Eclipse in Europe - anyone seen it? And enjoyed seeing a crescent Sun?
(Or even fully eclipsed Sun, for those posters that did see it from the Faroes).
I saw it (through borrowed welding glass)- it'd been over 15 years since my last eclipse-watch - and even though it was only partial from where I was, it was impressive.
Anyone else got eclipse stories to tell?Last edited by hamishspence; 2015-03-20 at 06:57 AM.

I was lucky--the overcast cleared for a couple of hours around the time of the eclipse so I got most of the full effect. Didn't manage to take any direct pictures of the crescent Sun, but I did manage to get a rather nice one showing the multiple sun images produced by the sun shining through a pine tree outside my window!

I watched it on TV.
The cloud cover just cleared enough, while still being present, we had about a minute of time where I could see the moon partially blocking the sun as it moved past the eclipse, though.

There were too many clouds to see it from here. Inevitably, it is now gloriously sunny.

Fortunately, there's a place near to where I live called Castle Hill, which (perhaps unsurprisingly) is on a hill. So my mate drove us up there to join what looked like a couple of hundred other people and we watched it. It's a bit of a shame that my phone is terrible, because none of the photos I got of it turned out good, but because I didn't wear glasses I can still see the image of the sun on my eyes even 7 1/2 hours later so I'm reliving it constantly!

It was overcast here too, but I rather liked it as it meant I could look directly at the sun and watch that way. That and the cloud cover created a wonderful little illusion for me: the thicker the clouds that passed directly over the sun the more the sun was eclipsed. As the clouds thinned it looked like the eclipse was rewinding itself.
The moon was bouncing in and out of the sun for ages.

Alas, I missed it entirely. The cloud cover was so thick I could only tell when the eclipse had been when it ended and thing became sunnier. To add insult to injury, the clouds packed up and left for the afternoon and the temperature went from finger-numbing to sweating.
Also, animals being sensitive to these things is nonsense: I work at a stables and the horses were completely unbothered all the way through.Spoiler: Pixel avatar and Raincloud Durkoala were made by me. The others are the work of Cuthalion.

Pretty much the same temperature-wise and cloud-wise here. Except that I could see it.
As for the animals? The Puppy was cool with it, but the cats (mine and those not mine) were a little antsy and edgy. Two cats doing simultaneous semi-synchronised circles is a strange thing to watch.

It sounds like you had a pretty good day: eclipse with bonus optical illusion in the morning and a nice sunny afternoon later.
I wonder if it's something about trust in humans that has an effect on them. Horses and dog are generally used to people being around and often take behaviour cues from them and treat them as the pack leader, but cats are usually more lonesome. Maybe the dogs+horses are more likely to trust their owners that nothing's wrong, while cats are a little more preoccupied by the fact that it's suddenly a bit darker?Spoiler: Pixel avatar and Raincloud Durkoala were made by me. Re: Today's Solar Eclipse in Europe - anyone seen it? And enjoyed seeing a crescent S
We had great weather, and while we had classes at nursing school, we managed to get on (prolonged) break in time for the eclipse. (Teachers had the same idea, for some reason. )
None of us students had any glasses; some tried photographing the sun with their phone, very clumsily. I, however, had a piece of cardboard, and knew the trick about piercing a tiny hole in it to observe the eclipse indirectly.
(It turned out that not only was I the only one around with cardboard, but that I also was pretty much the only one who knew about the trick.)
Long story short, I became some kind of hero during the dozen or so minutes spent getting cramps in my arms holding the cardboard over a white surface for everybody to see and explaining roughly the scientific reasons it worked. Also, if there was any doubt until today, I definitely cemented my reputation as the school's nerd.
(In the best way. Man, if I'd tried that in high school, my classmates would have started stoning me before I could point to the image of the solar crescent.)
So, an unexpectedly great day.Originally Posted by on Dwarf Fortress succession gamesOriginally Posted by Dwarf Fortress 0.40.01 bugs

Depends on the animal in question; at the height of the eclipse I could hear a number of cockerels crowing--presumably the low light levels made them think it was dawn again and they needed to do that?
@Mrc: You were looking directly at the sun without glasses on? You might well have permanently damaged your vision.Last edited by factotum; 2015-03-21 at 01:42 AM.

Got to watch the entire thing here -- beautiful day with not a cloud in site. Watched it through a blank dvd (the aluminized part). Very very cool experience. The light changing and the shadows becoming these razor sharp outlines int he warmer light, and to feel the temperature drop so quickly, then bounce right back up. Our ducks were freaking out and the roosters everywhere were crowing, but that's about it. Dog was a bit clingy, but the birds in the trees sung as usual.
Going to have to try and make it out to the States in 2017 for the full effect; plenty of choices of where to see it in totality there

Re: Today's Solar Eclipse in Europe - anyone seen it? And enjoyed seeing a crescent S
This is something I was discussing with a friend earlier. Obviously, looking at the sun isn't great for your eyes, but I remain unconvinced it's a death sentence. After all, people look at the sun all the time, by accident if nothing else. And when one was younger, a "how long can you look at the sun" contest was, if not a regular feature of life, at least not unheard of, and nobody seems to have suffered any lasting ill-effects from that.
It is, doubtless, not good for you, and I suspect that when an eclipse is around the temptation to stare rather than glance at the sun is higher, thus raising the risk, but I'm also pretty sure that the health warnings encourage a degree of over-caution.GITP Blood Bowl Manager Cup

Re: Today's Solar Eclipse in Europe - anyone seen it? And enjoyed seeing a crescent S
I live in California, but I watched a livefeed of the total eclipse in Svalbard, Faroe Islands were overcast(Though the pictures of the weather there during the eclipse I saw were amazing!). So incredibly beautiful.
The talk about projections reminds me of the partial I saw back in the early 90s as a kid. I barely remember the actual sun, we used those foil-y glasses things and it was fairly neat, but what really stuck in my memory were the projections - The perfect one the size of... I guess a decently sized saucer... right smack dab in the middle of the sidewalk, just sitting there showing the sun's illuminated part in a perfect spot of sunlight; and the moment I realized that all those bright spots under the tree were hundreds of miniature projections. It was amazing.
Can't wait for 2017 when we get our total here in the US. I can't wait to look for those projections again as totality approaches, and to actually see it for myself finally instead of pictures and video on the internet.
