Default Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition - OOC

    Spoiler: Big 17
    Show
1: What game system are you running (D&D, Call of Cthulu, Palladium, GURPS, etc.), and if applicable what edition (Original, Classic, Revised, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 10th, etc.)?

    Pathfinders

2: What 'type' or variant of game will it be (i.e. "Shadow Chasers" or "Agents of Psi" for d20 Modern)? What is the setting for the game (eg. historic period, published or homebrewed campaign setting, alternate reality, modern world, etc.)?

Published campaign setting with slight tweaks for flavor.

3: How many Players are you looking for? Will you be taking alternates, and if so, how many?

4 or so- hopefully all friends

4: What's the gaming medium (OOTS, chat, e-mail etc.)?

    GitP forums.

5: What is the characters' starting status (i.e. experience level)?

    1st level

6: How much gold or other starting funds will the characters begin with?

    600 for 1st level.

7: Are there any particular character classes, professions, orders, etc. that you want... or do not want?

no summoners, gunslingers, or eastern theme without re-fluffs (monks OK)

8: What are your rules on 'prestige' and/or homebrewed classes?

No home-brewed classes. Prestige classes available as per standard rules

9: What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game? Will you allow home-brewed races or species? 'Prestige' races or species?

No home-brewed races. Core and Featured races allowed w/ variant racial traits. Unusual PC races may create RP difficulties.

10: By what method should Players generate their attributes/ability scores and Hit Points?

Max HP 1st level, 20-point buy. One default non-campaign trait. One extra non-campaign trait with disadvantage per DM approval. One free extra trait by campaign race/region will be listed here: Pick from "Any" or "Rise of the Runelords" or here: Look for Varisian, or your race or here: Look for your race

11: Does your game use alignment? What are your restrictions, if so?

Yes- Not interested in CE or CN characters. Anything else is fine as long as you can RP it.

12: Do you allow multi-classing, or have any particular rules in regards to it?

If you want to, you may.

13: Will you be doing all of the die rolling during the course of the game?

    No.

Will die rolls be altered, or left to the honor system?

Die rolls have potential to be altered based on the situation and the narrative.

If players can make die rolls, which ones do they make, how should they make the rolls, and how should they report them?

    In forum rolling system.

14: Are there any homebrewed or optional/variant rules that your Players should know about?

    Yes

If so, list and explain them, or provide relevant links to learn about these new rules.

Good RP will result in possible rerolls to be stored on character sheet. Declare use of a reroll before you roll either die. Then take the better of the two.

15: Is a character background required?

    Yes

    If so, how big?

Details of family members and current expected contacts. Big 3 Character Traits (descriptive terms, not what you picked as "traits" from above) At least 1 character flaw and 2-3 "potential" enemies, (these could be rivals, or NPCs listed in the Runelords Player Guide list for Sandpoint that you don't think you'll get along with). If you don't fill these out, you're telling me you want my help with figuring it out and we'll work it out.

Are you looking for anything in particular (i.e. the backgrounds all ending up with the characters in the same city)?

Have a reasonable explanation of how you came to be in Sandpoint. I'll help if you can't think of one.

16: Does your game involve a lot of hack & slash, puzzle solving, roleplaying, or a combination of the above?

I'm planning on following the module, so whatever that entails, but I intend for roleplaying to have a stronger influence than puzzle solving.

17: Are your Players restricted to particular rulebooks and supplements, or will you be allowing access to non-standard material? What sources can Players use for their characters?

If it's in the PFSRD, you're good.

    Deren Urthn
    Spoiler: Player
    Show
    Rob

Dressed lightly in loose traveling clothes, the numerous tattoos and minor scars visible on his exposed skin mark this man as an outsider. His piercing blue eyes and jet black hair flit from point to point, never staying anywhere long.

Deren is stand-off-ish and slow to make friends, but very devoted once he accepts someone. He is generous with his power to heal, though cautious about allowing others to learn from whence his powers come. His scorpion familiar, Jade, largely stays out of sight, hidden amongst his clothes, it's behavior matching that of its master.

Suspicious and cautious, Deren tends to be quiet and say only what is needed until he finds he can trust a person.

    Sminerano
    Spoiler: Player
    Show
    Philippe (G)

Shorter than most of his own people, Sminerano is thus very short by human standards. His lithe and flexible body is covered in short, soft fur the color of ivory, topped by a thick mane of hair in the same color. He likes to wear the colorful clothes of his adopted home, Varisia, including the traditional kapenia scarf in the colors of Ekhaszer's family (purple, green and gold).
His face is decidedly simian in features, very mobile and expressive, with an easy smile and deep brown eyes that hint at his sense of fun and humor.

Sminerano is a cheerful, ever curious, gentle inventor and tinkerer. He loves practical jokes, physical experiments (preferably loud and showy), discovering new knowledge, and building contraptions of all kinds. He also loves talking. He does that a lot.

Truly attached to his master, he has made his work with him a priority over most other things in life. He likes to be the center of attention, even though he isn't particularly gifted for winning people over with words - so, instead, he tries to impress with shows of light, smoke, explosions, or strange inventions.

Having obtained acceptance and even a warm welcome in Sandpoint, and being happy there, has made him optimistic, maybe overly so. He tends to think the best of everybody, and can get swindled by the unscrupulous.

    Araxes "Rax" Kellandon
    Spoiler: Player
    Show
    Ian

Rax' half drow heritage (on his father's side) is all-too apparent between his pointed ears, silvery hair, and dark purple-grey skin. Out of doors he's never without a heavy cloak whose hood is almost always up, shielding his genetically weakened eyes from the harsh rays of the sun.

A lifetime of prejudice due to his exotic appearance has left Rax cynical and wary of strangers, and his upbringing without a father in the violent, chaotic streets of Riddleport removed any scruples about taking what he wanted, or needed. Once he's set his mind on a task, he can't rest until he's thought it through from every angle and reached a plan to accomplish it.

Tired of his meager, cutthroat existence in Riddleport, Rax has decided to finally leave home and see the rest of the country. He's saved up enough coin for passage by boat from Riddleport to the neighboring capital of Magnimar, but a storm in the Varisian Gulf damaged the vessel and it had to put into Sandpoint for repairs. It just so happens to be time for the city's annual Swallowtail Festival...

    Gilraen Surion
    Spoiler: Player
    Show
    John

Gilraen is the son of a Mierani elder. He was always something of a child protégé; every time the youth were taught a new lesson, he picked it up quicker and better than most of the other youngsters. As he grew into adolescence and began training in the ways of weapons both martial and verbal, he started to fidget more and more during his lessons. He still learned quickly, maybe even faster, but his father grew concerned that Gilraen would not become a suitable leader without more humility and harder life lessons. So, on his 100tg birthday, he was given a task: travel to Sandpoint, and recruit a corps of 5 adventurers to investigate the ruins of their tree-city, Celwynvian.

Sandpoint became his home for the next three decades. His father warned him that it would be no easy task, but still he expected more. Few people were willing to entertain the idea of "saving the elves," and fewer still had the patience to remain in Sandpoint indefinitely while he tried and failed to gather the asked 5 persons. Many short-term allies came and went, and Gilraen supported a modest life with the occasional adventuring work and bodyguarding. He still hopes to succeed, and is self conscious about his current failure. He communicates with his parents and sister regularly, through messages sent by courier, unable to bear the shame of facing his father directly.

Filibert Heathertoe and his mount Growler
    Spoiler: Player
    Show
    James

Filibert Heathertoe was born and raised in a community of halflings formed, as many such communities are, at the knees of a larger Human settlement. His particular community had sprung up around the creation of a mill, where the smaller, more dextrous fingers of his kinfolk wove fibers into threads, and threads into clothing more quickly and easily than their larger cousins, and so eked out a modest living.

Filibert, however, had neither the interest nor the patience for such mundane endeavors; as a young halfling, he drifted toward the campfires of adventurers, just outside the point where "the wilds" began to mingle with evidence of civilization, and tales of mystery, adventure, and valor got a foothold in his mind. In his mind's eye, he saw in himself the archetypal underdog, striving against impossible odds to fight for the right, and bringing peace to the wilds!

Filibert is friendly to a fault, and always ready with a helping hand. A hidden seriousness tugs at the corners of his eyes at times, but his eagerness to prove himself as a friend and companion usually overwhelm this tendency. Eager and helpful; friendly and welcoming. Brave and courageous in the face of adversity! At the same time, Filibert is impulsive, and a bit naive. He's a sucker for a good story.

Deren Urthn will need to buy more gear, but I think fits your outline already. I will fill out additional NPC contacts as needed.

Please let me know if I am missing anything and I will add to the sheet as necessary.

Araxes "Rax" Kellandon is ready for inspection as well. I also need to do something with the extra ~450 GP, and maybe fill out a few contacts in Sandpoint, but otherwise I think he's good to go.

@Justin: For his campaign trait, I've selected Cyphermage Backer, which wasn't explicitly in one of the lists you linked. But, I've written him as being from Riddleport, and doing various odd jobs for the Cyphermages during his adolescence, so I think it suits the purpose of tying into the campaign world.

Let me know if you have feedback!

Here's Sminerano (character sheet editing is done).

    Spoiler: Backstory
    Show
Sminerano was born in the jungles of the Mwangi expanse, among a small tribe of his folk, called the Mvenvena, located between Jaha and the Defaka River. His childhood was quiet and happy, in spite of the often harsh living conditions, but his keen and curious mind was thirsty for more than this simple life. Put it simply, he was bored.
Around the time he came of age, he met a jungle explorer, a strange fair skinned human man named Ekhaszer. Ekhaszer was an alchemist, a man full of mysteries and inventions, and Sminerano found his conversations and stories to be fascinating. When the man left, he slipped away and secretly followed him in his explorations. He ended up saving the man's life when he was ambushed by a band of gorillas hunting on behalf of the god-king Ruthazek. The pair barely escaped with their lives, and that day signaled the start of their friendship. Ekhaszer took him back to his own homeland, the city of Sandpoint in distant Varisia, and made him his apprentice.
Sminerano immensely enjoyed learning to read, finding about the mysteries of matter, and above all, the strange experiments he conducted with his master and that always seemed to end up in some sort of explosion - which he found fascinating as much as entertaining. He quickly proved an able student, and his natural dexterity proves very useful in daily laboratory tasks.
Sminerano has now been living in Sandpoint for nine years. Ekhaszer has grown older, and his health is showing the first signs of decline. Grateful for everything he has learned, Sminerano has decided to delay his plans to come back to his ancestral land, in order to assist his mentor in his old age.

    Spoiler: Personality
    Show
Truly attached to his master, he has made his work with him a priority over most other things in life. He likes to be the center of attention, even though he isn't particularly gifted for winning people over with words - so, instead, he tries to impress with shows of light, smoke, explosions, or strange inventions.

Spoiler: 3 character traits and 1 character flaw
    Show
    - Curious: Always interested in learning about new and strange things, always wanting to know more, about everything. About things, even more so than about people. He also loves to share his knowledge, big or small, and loves to talk in general. On the negative side, he can sometimes eventually bore or annoy people with his endless chatter.
    - Fun-loving: He likes jokes, parties, good food and drink. These aspects of life are exactly what attracts him to a society that's more civilized than the one of his birth. He's got great humor and doesn't mind being the butt of the joke, and that has served him well to become accepted by those who were originally put off by his appearance. Unfortunately, he's not as good about telling jokes himself; he often falls flat, and his attempts at pranks have had mixed success, to say the least.
    - Grateful: He owes a lot to Ekhaszer, and has come to see him as a father figure. He is very keen on protecting and helping the old alchemist in his final years. Likewise, if somebody does him a big favor, he will make lifelong friends if possible, and even if not, he will always try to repay the help received.
    - Naïve: Having obtained acceptance and even a warm welcome in Sandpoint, and being happy there, has made him optimistic, maybe overly so. He tends to think the best of everybody, and can get swindled by the unscrupulous.

    Spoiler: Physical Description
    Show
Shorter than most of his own people, Sminerano is thus very short by human standards.

    Spoiler: Contacts
    Show
Ameiko Kaijitsu (friend): Sminerano's unusual race and looks have made his first few years in Varisia a little difficult, as the locals had never seen a person like him before. His face and especially his tail have earned him quite a few half-amusing, half-nasty nicknames along the lines of "apeman", "longfinger", etc. The help and protection from Ekhaszer has made these taunts less fequent over time, and Sminerano easy humor and outgoing nature ended up winning over the majority of Sandpoint's residents.

In the early, more difficult times, he found support among one of Sandpoint's most open-minded and welcoming residents, the Rusty Dragon's owner, Ameiko Kaijitsu. He loves her cooking, and she seems to be one of the few who genuinely enjoys his jokes. They have formed a strong bond over the years.

Lonjiku Kaijitsu (business contact): Since Ekhaszer retired from adventuring life, he has not been living off his savings alone. He established a part-time business for himself, providing alchemical items as luxury household goods, such as candlerods or sunrods, some useful if a little exotic remedies (his recipe for something he calls Ekhaszer's Relief has been a boon to those who had a few drinks too many and had to go to work come morning), and especially, colorant and tints for Sandpoint Glassworks. Lonjiku Kaijitsu has come to value the novelty of colors, lighting effects and other interesting variations on glassware goods that are made possible by the addition of well-chosen alchemical additives to the manufacturing process.

Lonjiku and Amieko's estrangement makes things complicated at times. He avoids discussing one in front of the other, and that's awkward for him. The older man is certainly not one who's easy to make friends with, but Sminerano is keen on maintaining a good business relationship.

Chask Haladan (both friend and business contact): As Sminerano has been Ekhaszer's apprentice and helper during that time, he has come to know most of his business contacts, and a his mentor advanced in age, he's taken and increasingly prominent role as his representative. In particular, Chask Haladan, owner of the local bookstore and a longtime friend of Ekhaszer's, has welcomed him to his shop, and shown him some of his most beloved tomes, much to the delight of the ever-curious Sminerano.

Cyrdak Drokkus (business contact): On the side, Sminerano also started to provide a few services to Cyrdak Drokkus, for certain pieces that require enhancement with special stage effects. He enjoys the exciting, artistic atmosphere of the Sandpoint Theater, as it allows him to display creativity and try new things with unusual concoctions.

Nisk Tander (possible rival): Sminerano's curiosity didn't serve him well when it comes to Nisk, who quickly came to see him as a nosy questioner, perhaps someone bent on stealing the secrets of potion brewing from him. Sminerano explained he already had been trained in the matter by Ekhaszer, but Nisk remains vary of he vanara.

Spoiler: Regarding the events of 5 years ago
    Show
Five years ago, Sminerano wasn't as well-established in Sandpoint as he is now. He was more reclusive, and tended to cling to his master's side most of the time, as he wasn't always welcomed on his own. He was particularly affected by the murder spree, because, as a stranger and the only member of his race in town, he unavoidably became a suspect in the eyes of some. Casp Avertin had him followed for a while, but since Ekhaszer, a well-respected member of the community, was always able to vouch for him, and Casp was a fair and honest man, he soon enough turned his investigation in a different direction. Still, the events, horrible as they were for everybody in Sandpoint, left a particularly bitter memory in Sminerano. Nobody seems to remember that they had been suspecting or even accusing him at the time, so he eventually decided to put this past him and never refer to it anymore. Sometimes, though, an unrelated remark may bring the memories back, and bring a shadow to his mood, if only for an instant.

Spoiler: What is the greatest regret your character has about doing or not doing something?
    Show
Sminerano carries a bit of guilt at the rather cavalier and hurried manner he left his family and tribe behind to pursue his dream. He knows that he would never have been content with the simple jungle life of his hunter-gatherer tribe. But his parents did love him dearly, and their separation was very tearful. He promised himself he would go back one day, but as he was growing more and more attached to Ekhaszer and to life in Varisia, he kept putting it off longer and longer. With Ekhaszer's health taking a turn for the worse recently, he now thinks he will stay with the old man until the end, and maybe after that he would feel free to travel back to the Mwangi Expanse.

OK, Justin, here's what I have so far: Dossamir Morben, the archer oracle. What are your thoughts regarding oracle curses?

I'm having real trouble coming up with one that is not one of the following:

    1) absolutely crippling (ex: clouded vision, blackened)
    2) completely uninteresting, mechanically (ex: wasting, unchained)
    3) pretty overpowered (ex: merciful, haunted)

I'm currently leaning towards choleric or frenetic. Maybe feral (distant third). My biggest question regarding feral is whether or not it would disqualify me from casting things like enlarge person on myself. I could easily read "whichever is least advantageous" meaning I'm not a legal target....

Fortold and Forgotten both seem passably interesting, but mechanically uninspiring....

    Any thoughts?

    Factions

    Sandpoint Mercantile League

One of the major business powers of the region, the Mercantile League is owned equally by the 4 noble families in Sandpoint, even though none of them see to the day-to-day business. All shipping and passing documents, both overland and oversea, inquiries into land ownership, new business formation, and building and construction permits are all processed through this organization. Luckily, Sir Jasper Korvaski is an upstanding paladin of Abadar, and maintains fair business practices, even though difficulties have arisen from the Scarnetti family who find Jasper's relationship with Cyrdak to be scandalous at best.

    Scarnetti

This family hails from Cheliax and attempts to follow as many Chelish traditions as possible. Descended from Alamon Scarnetti, who 40 years ago took part in the assault against Varisia, the Scarnettis control the mills and the lumber industry in Sandpoint, giving them leverage over the Valdemars, which they use almost ruthlessly. The current patron is Titus Scarnetti.

    Valdemar

Ethram Valdemar is the only original member of the Sandpoint Mercantile League left alive. The family owns the shipbuilding and fishing industries, which while a major source of lifeblood of the town, is wholly dependent on a good supply of lumber.

    Deverin

The traditional leaders of Sandpoint, both of the early patriarchs of the family met their end at unfortunate accidents. Amos was trampled by a runaway horse and Fenchus was killed by a snakebite while hunting. The leadership role fell to Kendra Deverin, who was nominated by Casp Avertin, who was then town sheriff. She faced off against Titus Scarnetti, and won by a landslide. The crushing defeat undermined Titus in ways that made him more avaricious and petty. Kendra may have married Casp, but the murderer Chopper wrenched such dreams away from her.

    Kaijitsu

The owners of the Sandpoint Glassworks, the Kaijitsu family is the richest of the nobles, but also the most riven with strife. The Kaijitsu family were the survivors of a family exiled from Minkai for unknown reasons. They managed to flee over the Crown of the World. Lonjiku was born in Magnimar and never visited Minkai. His father then joined the League and built the Glassworks. Lonjiku was able to carry on his father's work as glassmaker, but was cuckolded by his wife. After an argument, he struck his illegitimate son Tsuto with a cane, causing him to leave Sandpoint. He believes his eldest daughter Ameiko also shamed him, by becoming an adventurer and then running a tavern and "flophouse".

    Sczarni

A family unto itself, the men and women and sometimes children calling themselves Sczarni, mostly in secret, are believed to be hucksters, pickpockets, con men, robbers, highwaymen, and murderers. The beliefs are held because there is an element of truth to such belief. However, most actual Sczarni perform some honest work.

    Sandpoint Garrison

The garrison is home to both the guard's militia barracks and the jail. There are about a dozen full-time guards and about four dozen servants and other experts keeping the guards equipment and logistics in order. Guards currently patrol the town alone, because most people don't openly cause trouble, except for the odd drunk. Once a week the garrison swells with men and women from the militia, to do their weekly training and exercise. Generally speaking it can take them anywhere from one to three hours to assemble. The sheriff, Belor Hemlock, watches, and encourages, but does not always act. Messengers to and from Magnimar arrive almost constantly, many of them with patrols of guards ready to escort prisoners to be transferred to trial in the city.

    Extra Contacts:

    People

    Outskirts of Town

Shalelu Andosana Not quite a bounty hunter, a survivalist, or a mercenary, but rather a mix of all three, the elven woman passes through town once or twice a season to buy supplies and never remains more than a few days, always staying in the same room at the Rusty Dragon free of charge thanks to her long friendship with Ameiko. Near the end of each visit, she meets with Sheriff Hemlock and Mayor Deverin for a few hours at the garrison to give a report on the state of the hinterlands before she leaves town again, a pouch of gold at her side.

Irena Vhiski The beautiful sister of Jubrayl travels back and forth from Magnimar and Sandpoint in her multicolored wagon. While most believe she is Sczarni, the rumors have never been proven.

    Spoiler: Others
    Show
Madrack Stoot A tight-lipped, gruff, ranger who is sometimes seen protecting the roads. No one in Sandpoint trusts him though, after the damning evidence mounted against his father.

Totron Vren A merchant who frequently travels between Sandpoint and Magnimar, frequently stopping along the road to sell supplies and trinkets to the various farmers before continuing on his way. He is guarded by Razzt and Ithun, two nine feet tall humanoids with blue skin and dark brooding eyes, that don't usually have much to say, and tend to back away from the merchant when he is trading. Most of the townsfolk know the pair are dangerous, and there are some whispers that the Sczarni have never nicked even a copper from the merchant after he hired the pair.

Boswick Vernari A prominent messenger known to deliver official messages from the nobles and officials of the town to and from Magnimar. He has been trying to actively court Rynshinn Povalli, Ameiko Kaijitsu, Sabyl Sorn, and even Aneka Avertin, without any real luck, but has hope that someday, someone will fall in love with him.

    Docks

Jargie Quinn Owner of the Hagfish tavern, a popular haunt for gamblers, fishermen, and sailors, offers one of the best seafood meals in town. Of course he also offers plenty of games of chance, including a rather interesting game called "yarning" which involves betting on how long a local can string along an impromptu fable without contradicting himself. Jargie is one of the most accomplished "yarners," often recalling, in wildly differing versions, how he lost his leg. 33

Jubrayl Vhiski If rumors are to be believed, Jubrayl is the major player of the Sczarni in Sandpoint. Of course no one really knows if this is true or not. If you have him as a contact, be prepared to do something for him to keep him interested in you. 42

    Spoiler: Others
    Show
Turch Sterglus manages the fishmarket for the Valdemar family. Turch seems to have a complaint for everything, but everything seems to turn on his wink and wry smile. The locals often act as if Turch owns the business, and even tips him a few extra coins. Turch's five sons have all made careers working for their father in various fishing occupations. 34

Gressel Tenniwar frontman and bouncer for Jubrayl Vhiski, most people believe Gressel owns Fatman's Feedbag, the seediest bar in Sandpoint. Sheriff Hemlock is on first name terms with him, only because he gets called down to the bar two to three times a week to haul away the most drunken and disorderly. 42

Kaye Tesarani is Sandpoint's madame, and runs the town's brothel with class and grace. She pays her girls and boys quite well, and employs some rather large Shoanti men to take the rougher crowd out of her establishment. The Scarnetti family has decried the place as a Sczarni front, though the rumors just increase the salacious reputation. Kaye seems to have a relationship with Sheriff Hemlock, making the situation even more complicated. 43

Hayliss Korvaski owner of Sandpoint Botique, which is more like an Import Shop, is the sister of Sir Jasper Korvaski and a devout worshiper of Abadar. However, Hayliss is much less diplomatic, and has called out the Scarnettis for their behavior towards her brother. 41

    Uptown

Belor Hemlock most likely doesn't have time for you. Unless you are working for him in the guard, or causing problems. He's been sheriff for five years now, but the job, and his fame, which he was quite happy with at the time, has been wearing on him lately. If you're wondering about his last name, it was translated into Chelish from Shoanti. 10

    Spoiler: others
    Show
Abstalar Zantus The local priest serves Desna, but has no trouble with the other openly worshipped deities in Sandpoint. He was the chief acolyte to Exakien Tobyn before the fire claimed the previous temple. 1

Naffer Vosk The bonekeeper is a twisted, shrivelled man who at first glance, none would believe could be in the service of Sarenrae. But watch him for a day, and the goddess fire clearly flows through him, as he bustles with his duties. 2

Garridan Viskalai Owner, proprietor and bartender of the White Deer, longs to return to his Shoan'ti heritage. Ask him about his sons and daughters, however, and the twinkle in his eye says more than his words can. You may, however, see the sheriff come into the inn, but the temperature drops almost immediately as the brothers exchange looks. 3

Veznutt Parooh A gnome with a penchant for history, is very seldom found far from his library or Turandarok Academy. Most would give him a wide berth, were it not for the vast collection of maps, detailing most of known Varisia. 4

Gorvi Don't let his tattoos, his girth, or his unkempt home fool you. Gorvi is one of the best things happening for most street urchins and layabouts, easily employing two dozen of them to drive his red wheelbarrows around town, carrying refuse away. Just don't make him your drinking buddy, as his stench repels women almost as quickly as his demeanor. 7

Brodert Quink If you ask him, he would much rather be in Magnimar or Janderhoff than Sandpoint, but, unable to convince his colleagues in those cities of his worth, has resigned to settle here. Maybe he would get the respect he craves if he didn't keep going on and on about how the lighthouse had been a terrifying weapon that launched great balls of fire. 8

Volioker Briskalberd is the dwarf you want to see about a lock, unless you're with the Sczarni. Then you can go shove off. A good story might get you a discount on his services, however. Or assisting him in patronizing the playhouse, which is definitely his favorite pastime. 9

Vachedi is a Shoanti tribesman in charge of the jail. He'd gladly be back with his tribe, were it not for his enslaved sons, who he hopes to rescue through his wages. 10

Savah Bevaniky One of the more reputable arms and armor dealers in Sandpoint, Savah knows the story of every item in her shop, save one, a repeating crossbow sold in a hurry by an adventurer on his way to Riddleport. 12

    Downtown

Gaven Deverin One of the two brothers who established the Two Knight Brewery in Sandpoint, Gaven is Mayor Deverin's cousin. His brother Wade was killed 5 years ago, and it caused Gaven to lose some of his spirit, and much of his faith. This has affected his work, and the brew, while passable, doesn't have quite the quality it used to.39

Aliver "Pillbug" Podiker is a short, rotund man who sells herbs, potions, and...other...things. You'll have to ask the Sczarni about the other things. 16

Chask Haladan owns a strange bookstore by the name of "The Curious Goblin", and if the sign is any indication, seems to have no intention of slowing down, even though he is well past his prime. It's quite clear that even though few of the locals are interested, he maintains the stock with a careful, attention to detail and love of story that would be more at home in Magnimar or Riddleport. The prices would be more palatable there as well. 22

Cyrdak Drokkus If you know Cyrdak personally, you are one of the lucky few in Sandpoint. Prepare to be gossiped about. However, if you only know Cyrdak, you might as well be nobody. Cyrdak will boast to any and everyone that his theater is one of the most impressive this side of Varisia. You would be wrong to doubt him. He uses his contacts in Magnimar to ensure the playhouse shows the newest creations three times each weekend. His good looks and flirtations attract many of the young women of Sandpoint, but his relationship with Jasper Korvaski leaves little room for anyone else. 23

Olmur Danvakus is a halfling in a rare position of ownership as the guildmaster of grocers. He tends his duties well and his thriftiness is tempered with a fairness and respect that the local farmers are quick to defend. Anything regarding their stock and trade goes through him, thus the runners from the major taverns and inns are always going back and forth carrying order slips and loads of vegetables. 29

Rynshinn Povalli owns her mother Vernah's fine clothing store, and has operated the shop for the last several years. She never knew her father Iremiel, and still holds hope that the rumors of his death are untrue. Every year on her birthday, she receives a small package of elven coins, medicine, and toys, mysteriously appearing somewhere in the upper areas of the shop. Rynshinn entertains the idea of courtship with a few of the towns more eligible, but has not accepted any true offers. She has also organized a small guild of quilters, crafters, sewers, and tailors, and a mind to open a shop in Magnimar, but has not yet found an able partner. 30

Ameiko Kaijitsu owns and operates Sandpoints oldest inn, named The Rusty Dragon, which is one of the first inns newcomers see in Sandpoint. Ameiko selects spicy and exotic food to add to the menu, and is quite competent and willing to perform at least two or three songs. She has an alluring exotic beauty, but seems to dislike Cyrdak intensely, though offers no reasons for her ire. Ameiko seems to be the most friendly to wandering adventurers, and has been so bold to put up a "Help Wanted" board where townsfolk can post odd jobs that may need the abilities of an adventurer. 37

Hannah Velerin stocks her shop will all kinds of herbs and other remedies. She also offers certain services to help women complete or end their pregnancy. 45

    Spoiler: Others
    Show
Risa Magravi The owner of Risa's Place, by Varisians, for Varisians. Don't expect a welcome here unless you were around during the Late Unpleasantness. 13

Larz Rovanky One of the reasons Gorvi has it so good is due to Larz's expectations of his own hirelings. He's temporarily fired them at least 4 times in the past year due to poor treatments being used on the hides. Still, finding workers willing to deal with the smell is even more challenging than gathering dungsweepers. 14

Das Korvut A large man with a temper to match, Das melts and forms steel and raises mastiffs. If he wasn't good at it, it's possible he would have been run out of town by now. 15

Nisk Tander If you don't want to deal with someone who has rather obvious ties to the Sczarni, you will have to risk the alternative. Nisk's potions aren't always quite what they seem. Don't let him catch you discovering that in his shop though. 17

Jesk "Cracktooth" Berinni If your dream is to perform at the Sandpoint Theater, you'll get to know Cracktooth quite well, as his tavern is the best place to practice a craft or performance in front of a live audience. Once you think you've got your performance down pat, you can try in front of the big crowd, when the latest playhouse show lets out. Don't let his name and looks fool you, he's got the pulse of the Magnimar under his fingertips. 18

Sabyl Sorn maintains order in the House of Blue Stones, a monastery built to honor Irori. The monastery also hides a defended secret library, which Sabyl is hesitant to show members outside the faith. 19

Alma, Arika, and Aneka Avertin Alma owns the local bakery, but pines for her lost son Casp, leaving the running of the business to Arika and Aneka, twin sisters. Aneka seems quite content with her lot, but Arika is anything but. 21

Ven, Solsta, Katrine and Shayliss Vinder Ven Vinder owns the best stocked general store in Sandpoint. As such, the Vinder family has minor fame, and now that his daughters are coming of age, Ven seems to be beside himself in rumor-quashing. Unfortunately for him, his eye is on the wrong daughter, as Katrine seems to be behaving properly, while Shayliss is beginning to undermine the family's good name. 26

Ilsoari Gandethus is the headmaster of Turandarok Academy, which is a rather pretentious name for what amounts to a day school, orphanage, and small private residence. Given that the headmaster was an adventuring wizard and keeps tokens of his wandering days under lock and key, the children tell all sorts of tales about what must be behind the headmaster's locked door. Few, however, are brave enough to ask and dispel the tales. Those who are brave enough are treated to a wide sampling of strange, but mostly harmless, objects. 27

Niska Mvashti lives in the oldest and most decrepit manor house in Sandpoint. Madame Mvashti claims to be a historian and seer, however the ages' events have broken established prophecies, leaving her filled with doubt. Her house was built for her when Sandpoint was founded, thanks to demands of the local Varisians. The house was to revert back to town property after her death, but Madame Mvashti has proven to be of hardier stock than some of the other founders. Druids are known to visit her regularly, and she can be seen taking long walks in the countryside with at least one acting as guide and guardian. 28

Courrin Whesterwill The manager of the Scarnetti mill, currently the only one in operation. Rather than raise rates to lower demand, Courrin lowered the prices for use to record lows until the outlying mills can be rebuilt, which reduced claims of Scarnetti-sponsored arson. 32

Daviren Hosk The most hate filled person in Sandpoint, as long as he's thinking about Goblins. He tends the stables, and has nailed grisly trophies to the rafters of the stables, long rows of goblin ears, each with a name burned into the leathery flesh. 38

Vorvashali Voon A strange character with long red hair and a glint in his bright blue eyes that seems to almost jump up and down for joy whenever a customer walks in. Of course no one is really sure what's for sale and what's already been sold in the Feathered Serpent, because contacts from Magnimar come in weekly to buy and trade magical items. If you're willing to wait, Vorvashali can get you almost anything you want. 44

Possible contacts based on what I know about your characters so far, but by all means, choose the ones you think will be interesting.

Given your abilities, and vouching from your mentor, Cyrdak Drokkus offered you a job some time ago as a stage-hand and special effects artist at the Sandpoint Theater. You may choose to accept or reject his proposition with no ill will. Your interest in reading and good nature has also sparked a possible friendship with Chask Haladan, owner of the local bookstore.

Not quite knowing what to do with you, but very insistent that your place in the family is somewhat in question, mostly because of the unknown status of your previous contacts, Jubrayl introduces you to a rather short man everyone seems to call "Pillbug." You're not sure if you're there for protection or apprenticeship or neither. While you don't enjoy being associated with the strange man, and find his comings and goings as a waste of your time, it does give you more insight into who in the town is Sczarni, as they seem to have a catch phrase with the potions dealer.

You decide to take a stroll in town and notice something of a kindred spirit, or perhaps a perfect foil, an attractive woman named Rynshinn. She seems to see past your drow parentage, due to your body language, and catches your eye and smiles slightly before going back to her tasks organizing a rack of fine clothing. Asking around indicated that she was available, but very hard to get, and many of the towns men had been trying to win her hand for years.

Those are good ideas! I'll develop a little bit more, based on that starting point.

Spoiler: Those of you who have been in Sandpoint for 5+ years
    Show
Sandpoint seemed to be alive with bird iconography, as a carpenter by the name of Jervis Stoot would offer to "set the birds free" in a particular piece of wood. Many people were proud to have a "Stoot" carved for them. So it was no surprise when Jervis wanted to build a house in the area north of the Old Light, which was known as a haven for birds.

Five years ago, there was a string of murders in Sandpoint. For a month, almost every day a person would turn up dead. Each was found in the same terrible state: body bearing deep cuts to the neck and torso, hands and feet severed and stacked nearby, and the eyes and tongue missing entirely, having been plucked crudely from each head. From these actions, the nickname Chopper was given to the mass murderer.

Sandpoint's sheriff at the time was a no-nonsense man named Casp Avertin, a retired city watch officer from Magnimar, yet even he was ill-prepared for the murderer who came to be known as Chopper. While he set traps and pursued Chopper, the murderer would find clever ways around the guards. This began to wear heavily on them, and the entire town's mood darkened. Sheriff Avertin began to fall deep into his cup, when he was walking home one night and by chance stumbled on the killer. Avertin was able to wound the man, at the cost of his own life. Belor Hemlock then found the pair of bodies, and rallied the guards to follow the trail. It led to Stoot's Rock.

At first the guards believed Stoot would be just another victim, but they entered Stoot's house and found horrors they were not expecting. Above had been a reasonable house, but carved beneath it was a dark sanctuary to a demon lord of wings and temptation. None of the guards dared to speak its name. Jervis had apparently killed the people for their eyes and tongues as a sacrifice, and plucked out his own eyes and tongue to complete an offering to the demon.

The townspeople, still in shock, took hatchets and cut every "Stoot" carving out of their wooden buildings. If that had been the last of it, they might have just had a horrible story to tell. But a month later, the local temple burned to the ground, claiming the priest and his adopted daughter Nualia who had been serving the town. Unable to grieve properly, some of the most affected are still in poor states.

Knowing the above, describe how it would affect your character.

Now that most of you have your contacts picked and your personalities nailed down a little bit, I need some more information from you. So I'm going to ask you this question, which does have to do with how the story will progress (but might not come up for a while). "What is the greatest regret your character has about doing or not doing something?"

That said, I'm going to start the IC thread soon.

    Spoiler: John
    Show
Few elves make their home in Varisia, with the exception of the residents of the Mierani Forest. From the giant pines, white barks, and towering coastal redwoods, the Mierani elves have sculpted several villages, most notably cliff-side Arsmeril on the coast and the trading town of Crying Leaf on the edge of the Velashu Uplands. Their true home, though, the tree-city of Celwynvian, is a city abandoned. Although it still stands, the elves have fled the City of Emerald Rains, saying only that the place has fallen under the deepest of shadows. Few elves—and no outsiders— know any more than this, though emissaries to Korvosa and Magnimar offer incredible rewards to any willing to investigate the forsaken city.

Aside from those of the northern forest, elves from far-off exotic locales like Kyonin, Sovyrian, and the Mordant Spire are not unknown in Varisia’s larger ports.
    Spoiler: Suggestion
    Show
So if you're not from Varisia, you probably arrived in Sandpoint via Arsmeril, Riddleport or Magnimar. If you are from a Varisian commune, it is north of Riddleport, and you would have had to get passage to get to Sandpoint. My best guess as to why you're here is that you're escorting a druid of some power or an agent of Arsmeril to speak with Madame Mvashti about Celwynvian, attempt to get some information from one of the local book dealers and historians while on the way to Magnimar, or post flyers calling for adventurers on the way to Magnimar. As such, you also know of two other elves with ties to your commune: Hannah Velerin, who you know handles a stipend to aid adventurers in booking passage back to Arsmeril, and Shalelu Andosana.

In elven terms, you'll have the blink of an eye to make friends in Sandpoint (2 weeks) before things begin to get incredibly busy.

Here's some more detail about Sminerano and his mentor.

    Spoiler: Additional backstory
    Show
Sminerano's unusual race and looks have made his first few years in Varisia a little difficult, as the locals had never seen a person like him before. His face and especially his tail have earned him quite a few half-amusing, half-nasty nicknames along the lines of "apeman", "longfinger", etc. The help and protection from Ekhaszer has made these taunts less fequent over time, and Sminerano easy humor and outgoign nature ended up winning over the majority of Sandpoint's residents.

Since Ekhaszer retired from adventuring life, he has not been living off his savings alone.

As Sminerano has been Ekhaszer's apprentice and helper during that time, he has come to know most of his business contacts, and a his mentor advanced in age, he's taken and increasingly prominent role as his representative. In particular, Chask Haladan, owner of the local bookstore and a longtime friend of Ekhaszer's, has welcomed him to his shop, and shown him some of his most beloved tomes, much to the delight of the ever-curious Sminerano.

On the side, Sminerano also started to provide a few services to Cyrdak Drokkus, for certain pieces that require enhancement with special stage effects. He enjoys the exciting, artistic atmosphere of the Sandpoint Theater, as it allows him to display creativity and try new things with unusual concoctions.

Spoiler: Regarding he events of 5 years ago
    Show
Five years ago, Sminerano wasn't as well-established in Sandpoint as he is now.

Are you looking for anything in particular (i.e. the backgrounds all ending up with the characters in the same city)?

Have a reasonable explanation of how you came to be in Sandpoint. I'll help if you can't think of one.
For descriptive traits, let's go with "reserved," "generous," and "drifting." He is reserved when around crowds or strangers, not giving away much of what he is thinking and keeping to himself till he feels safe to speak or act freely. Deren is generous with his gifts, particularly witch hexes (such as his healing hex), which lack daily usage limits. He is drifting without clear purpose in life right now, content to observe and enjoy life until something grabs his interest and motivates him to do more.

As discussed in the Hangout, going to go with Jubrayl, his sister Irene, and Mr. "Pillbug" for contacts. Reason for being in town would related to trade - the wagon family with whom Deren has traveled didn't plan to stay, but he stayed behind on a whim.

As for enemies, as a Sczarni with little prior motivation to hide his affiliation I feel confident most of the town distrusts him. Is that enough in the way of potential enemies to cover it?

Hokay, got a bit more of Rax's backstory fleshed out:

    Spoiler: Life in Riddleport
    Show
Rax was born to a human mother in the slums of Riddleport 22 years ago. He never knew his father, but had no misconceptions about who he was - his drow-like appearance was proof enough of his ancestry. His mother never spoke of his father or how she and he met, but Rax suspects it must have occurred while she was living in Janderhoff, a dwarven-run town at the base of the Mindspin Mountains.

Pirate-ridden Riddleport is a tough place to grow up as a child; moreso for one so visibly distinct from other boys his age. The culture of Riddleport didn’t just encourage crime and theft, it glorified it in the form of the rowdy pirates along the docks and virtually required it for those struggling to survive in the slums. Rax’s unique abilities were a blessing and a curse from early on. At best, they were recognized as useful, such as when pirates would pay him to steal goods and sabotage their rivals under cover of night, where his dark skin and no need for light gave him a knack for avoiding sentries and Riddleport’s meager law enforcement. At worst, he had to endure taunts like “darky” and ostracism from his peers, and as a result he made very few friends of his own age.

One bright spot amidst the squalor was Rax’s dealing with the Cyphermages. As a child, young Araxes would stare at the rune-covered Cyphergate for hours at a time, puzzling over the strange markings until he could have reproduced them all from memory. His fascination drew the attention of one kindly older mage, Dreyfus Sandoval, who took the boy under his wing and gave him lessons in the Draconic and ancient Thassilonian languages. Later, when Rax’s interests and activities took a less… legal turn, Dreyfus would pay him well for any ancient or magical writings he “discovered”, and never asked too many questions.
About six months before the campaign begins, Rax’s mother passed away: the consequence of many years of harsh conditions, and a constitution that was never great to begin with. Amidst his morning, Rax realized that his main tie to Riddleport had been severed, and he started making plans to leave the city and see the rest of the country. He booked passage on a ship bound for Magnimar, but a great storm in the Varisian Gulf damaged the ship badly, and it had to put into Sandpoint for extensive repairs and re-provisioning. He’s been in town for less than a week as the story begins...

    Spoiler: Sandpoint contacts
    Show
    Jargie Quinn
As Rax and the ship's (name TBD?) crew are stranded in Sandpoint while repairs are underway, they've gotten to know the nearest barkeep pretty well. Quinn doesn't hassle Rax about his appearance, and in return Rax tips well and puts up with his rambling yarns.

    Rynshinn
You decide to take a stroll in town and notice something of a kindred spirit, or perhaps a perfect foil, an attractive woman named Rynshinn. She seems to see past your drow parentage, due to your body language, and catches your eye and smiles slightly before going back to her tasks organizing a rack of fine clothing. Asking around indicated that she was available, but very hard to get, and many of the towns men had been trying to win her hand for years.

    Sheriff Balor Hemlock
The Sheriff is naturally suspicious of any ship out of Riddleport, a city known for its piracy and lawlessness. As the mostly visually distinctive passenger (and garbed not so unlike a pirate himself), Rax winds up taking the brunt of the sheriff's suspicion and dirty looks when a rash of thefts springs up in the sailors' wake (he is responsible for a few of the thefts, but not all). There's no love lost between Rax and the sheriff...

    Spoiler: Greatest Regret
    Show
Rax’s greatest regret is that he couldn’t “save” his mother, by getting her out of the impoverished conditions that sapped her vitality and ultimately cost her her life. Somehow, no matter how much he stole or how many artifacts he fenced, it was never enough, or it was stolen again from him by someone bigger and stronger. Fleeing the guilt of his failure is a large motivation for his journey away from Riddleport, not that he’d ever acknowledge it as such.

    Spoiler: Descriptive terms
    Show
    Descriptive terms: Resourceful, tenacious, unscrupulous

    Flaw: Distrusting

A lifetime of prejudice due to his exotic appearance has left Rax cynical and wary of strangers, and his upbringing without a father in the violent, chaotic streets of Riddleport removed any scruples about taking what he wanted, or needed. Once he's set his mind on a task, he can't rest until he's thought it through from every angle and reached a plan to accomplish it.
Rax rarely does anything for anybody else with expectation of payment or an ulterior motive, and so he automatically distrusts anyone who appears to be acting altruistically - immediately searching for a hidden motive that may or may not exist (Dreyfus, the cyphermage, may be the one exception).

Hit me up with them questions / comments / suggestions!

Justin has asked me to choose something that Deren regrets the most. He is something of a wanderer and (prior to the AP) a loner who isn't too close to anyone. The Sczarni culture (somewhere between gypsy and the Mafia) is one where he has been able to keep his head low and his nose out of trouble, but never really found a real family. Growing up communally and not knowing his father and losing track of his mother he lacks any deeply held family ties.

All that said, I think the best "regret" is that he never really fell in love and got close to anyone. Finding a "family" in the PCs will be very welcome, but likely won't fulfill that need (I like you guys as players, but inter-PC romance is not on my "to-do" list). Perhaps there will be a good opportunity in the AP to find romance...?

To do list - this is mostly as a reminder to myself.

    - Replace one of the two existing traits with Favored Son
    - Write backstory of becoming friends with Ameiko
    - List 600gp worth of equipment
    - Write descriptive personality traits
    - Look at possibilities that Sminerano knows some of the other characters prior to the adventure.

EDIT - by the way, I'd like to claim Teal as a speech color.

    EDIT - all done.

I'm gonna claim purple, before someone gets all crazy on me.

Since it seems I will be the most long-lived of the party, I need to come up with more of an explanation for this guy.

I finally have some details on Gilraen.
    Spoiler: Welcome to Sandpoint
    Show
Gilraen is the son of a Mierani elder.

    Spoiler: Sandpoint contacts
    Show
    Hannah Velerin
Gilraen finds it easier to get along with the "younger" races, due to his own frenetic nature, but still is more comfortable around other Elves than anyone else. Hannah was one of the first people he met in Sandpoint, and continues to be his closest friend there. [He may pursue romantic interest in her in the future.]

    Ameiko Kaijitsu
The exotic innkeeper is a common encounter for Gilraen. He keeps an advertisement on her "help wanted" board that has produced his only current progress of any nature. All of his responses have since moved on, except Sminerano, a Vanara from the Mwangi expanse. He is still here, at least, though he hasn't been around long enough to rely on, really.

Ameiko seems content to put up with Gilraen's near-constant presence, as long as the elf buys a meal now and then.

    Shalelu Andosana
Gilraen ran into this elusive elf for the first time some 25 years ago. He happened to be in the common room of the Rusty Dragon when the doors opened and the keepers face split into a wide grin. He introduced himself, initially dismayed at her disinterest in his plight, but over the course of the next few days developed an odd and semi-uncomfortable relationship. Over the years, he has developed more respect for her goals, and their relationship has blossomed into a pleasant friendship. He makes it a point to meet with her, when she's in town.

    Spoiler: "Stoot" Saga
    Show
Gilraen was just as surprised as most at his behavior and eventually revealed guilt.
He knows little of the details, but given his relationship with his own well-known father, finds the situation with the man's surviving son difficult.

He knows firsthand that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, so to speak. However, he also knows firsthand that a man's son is not an extension of the man. He struggles with an instinct to distrust the Ranger, but actively tries to afford the man proper opportunity to acquit himself honorably.

    Spoiler: Greatest Regret
    Show
Gilraen's greatest regret is his current situation. He fully expected go return home within the month, with a corps of double or triple what had been requested. He blames himself for the failure, though it's likely due more to the reputation of the city than any personal shortcoming. Still, if you want to make him angry, just ask how his hunt is going, or say something condescending about his task.

    Spoiler: Traits & Drawback
    Show
    Traits:
Warrior of old: Gilraen has experienced the same training most elves get, in a wider variety of styles. His no-nonsense mentors have ensured that he is always mentally prepared to defend himself, should the need arise.
Resilient: His mentors also didn't take things particularly easy on him. Light poison doses were not unheard of, and helped go develop a slightly heartier than usual fortitude.
Called: Gilraen is the focus of divine energies beyond his comprehension. Whatever these forces be, they deign to occasionally guide his hand. When he is most prone to fail, he senses a force that guides his strikes.

    Drawback:
Pride: When someone threatens, accuses, or challenges you, you take a –2 penalty on Diplomacy checks and Sense Motive checks involving that creature until the creature apologizes to you.

As a child, Gilraen understood his father's special place in society. He has taken great care to never present himself as an embarrassment, and cannot abide challenges to his or his father's character.

I edited my first post with details about descriptive traits, and contacts including Ameiko. I've changed the traits and some skills in my character sheet, but there's work left to be done about equipement, as well as the rest of my to-do list.

@ Shadowsend: Would it be possible to insert a table with all characters and links to their char sheets and descriptions in your first post? It would be nice to help remember who is who.

EDIT: Equipement done. I took the Preservasionist archetype. The impact isn't felt before level 2, though.

Ok, say hello to Filibert Heathertoe and his trusty steed/companion Growler!

As discussed in the chat, I'm going to describe his backstory and etc. once I have time to double-check the map so I'm giving him an appropriate mill town from which to have been exiled... but that won't be until tomorrow at earliest.

More about Filibert! (Claiming Red for his speech color, and Tan for Growler, when appropriate.)

    Spoiler: Backstory
    Show
Filibert Heathertoe was born and raised in a community of halflings formed, as many such communities are, at the knees of a larger Human settlement.

He began to explore the foothills and forests surrounding their community, and it was on one of these jaunts that he came upon a grisly scene...

In a dense copse of trees, he found the carcasses of an entire pack of wolves, hideously maimed, and with tooth marks in evidence on flesh and bone. In fear and disgust, he began to retreat, but he suddenly heard a tiny howl coming from the underbrush some yards away from the scene, and went to investigate. He found a young wolf, almost newborn, whining its hunger and fear to the heedless empty night. Filibert resolved to save the wolf, gently carrying it back to his home, where he secreted milk and bits of meat and meal to the eager pup. As it grew, their bond of friendship grew apace, and when in his carelessness Filibert allowed them to be discovered wrestling and playing just outside of town, the community grudgingly allowed Filibert to keep the wolf (under supervision).

Although his temperament was less-than-ideal for the industrious workings inside the mill, grumblings of violence to small frontier towns like their own reached the ears of the mill's owner (and, coincidentally, the community's patriarch), who found a use for the young halfling as something of a bodyguard for the mill. After weeks and months with little having ever happened to occasion raising of alarm, Filibert had allowed himself to drift off to sleep at the end of another boring day when the barks and growls of his friend roused him, and Filibert raced around to the rear of the mill just in time to see a small, dark figure disappearing into the night, evidence of his dastardly work being done: tongues of flame licked up the corner of the mill building, growing in the night! Just as Filibert picked up the figure's discarded torch and was looking at in confusion, the workers of the mill rounded the corner to the rear of the building, looking up at the flames in dismay, and then down at Filibert in rage!

Dumbstruck by their accusing faces and pointing fingers, Filibert was nearly knocked over by Growler as first he ran to put himself between the mill workers and his faithful friend, and then turned, nudging the halfling toward his back! Fleeing on Growler's back to their little home, he gathered a few things and made for the safety of the wilderness. He had never imagined that the life of a lone adventurer would be thrust on him so suddenly, or under such tragic circumstances.

    Spoiler: Personality
    Show
Filibert is friendly to a fault, and always ready with a helping hand. A hidden seriousness tugs at the corners of his eyes at times, but his eagerness to prove himself as a friend and companion usually overwhelm this tendency.

    Spoiler: Character traits
    Show
Eager and helpful; friendly and welcoming. Brave and courageous in the face of adversity!

At the same time, Filibert is impulsive, and a bit naive. He's a sucker for a good story.

    Spoiler: Physical Description
    Show
Of average height for a halfling, Filibert is nonetheless stockily built, with an unusual amount of lean muscle making itself evident beneath the underclothing and chainmail that has become his customary garb. Wavy brown hair and friendly green eyes finish the short-statured "adventurer".

    Spoiler: Contacts
    Show
I'm not sure what would be good suggestions for contacts for Filibert... I would have him be new in town (as befitting his "Exile" status) and perhaps be avoiding halflings (gossip travels fast...) but otherwise I'm not sure he would know enough to have friends or enemies just yet.

    Spoiler: Greatest Regret
    Show
Filibert's greatest regret is that his inattention led to the destruction of the mill on which his community's livelihood depended, and that predicated his current estrangement from them.

Ok, in response to Rob's frustration, this is how I would be RPing a Sczarni. I'll throw it in a spoiler tag.

    Spoiler: Sczarni Eyes Only
    Show

Ok, the Sczarni actively control Riddleport, and are under constant threat of upheaval there due to the chaotic nature of the city and roving bands of pirates. As such, they need eyes and ears everywhere, just like a Thieves' Guild. They are a criminal element of Varisians and why Varisians have a bad name as being con men and robbers, because the Sczarni are the ones doing that. This is why Varisians who are not Sczarni don't like them, and are less likely to deal with them if they know about the relationship, mostly from pressure from guards, and never being quite sure if the Sczarni won't cheat them as well. Chelaxians wouldn't normally mind them, except most of the Chelaxians from Magnimar are primarily a mercantile people who respect basic rights including property rights, and the Sczarni cut into their profits and make it harder to figure out who to trust among the Varisians.

Think of Sandpoint as a satellite of Magnimar. Many of the same ideals of the Chelaxians from Magnimar are there, but mixed in with the reverence for Desna and the free wheeling of the Varisians. As such, this is an opportunity for Sczarni to operate. They're able to commit crimes against Chelaxians and get to blend back into the Varisians for anonymity. If they're caught, they're unwilling to turn on anyone else. So they take the fall for whatever crime they've been apprehended for. Thus, whether people know they are Sczarni or not can make their criminal activity easier or more difficult.

They would not be nearly as successful without a support network. They get information from the leader of the group or one of his cohorts, in this case "Uncle" Jubrayl or "Cousin" Gressel or "Cousin" "Pillbug". To throw suspicion off the leaders and increase confusion for the guards, almost all the other Sczarni refer to each other as "Cousin". So, Gressel would call Deren, "Cousin," and would be called "Cousin" Gressel in return.

The information provided may be leads on legitimate jobs that would still provide time to do other activities, leads on a particular shipment of valuable goods, typically gems, jewelry, and or coins due to their difficulty to identify ownership, leads on the whereabouts of specific magistrates, etc. The leaders gain the information via their "family" members. So people willing to provide work for Sczarni are typically "off limits" in terms of scamming, conning, or robbing. In town, these include Gorvi, Gaven Deverin, Longiku Kaijutsu, Naffer Vosk, and Larz Rovanky. Other common occupations for the Sczarni in town are dock and stock workers for the Fish and Grocer's Markets, workers for the lumber mill, and shipwrights. Many Sczarni out of town would revert back to banditry rather than take on a cover profession, but some become traveling merchants and wagoners, bringing messages between "Uncles" in hidden compartments of their wagons. The Sczarni bandits who are melee based typically call themselves "Bravos," though that name is common to all Varisian warriors who are lightly armed and armored. Sczarni that do not wish to do either, may hide their relationship with the Sczarni as they travel and pass as regular Varisians.

Many of the more successful Sczarni use "face skills" to commit their crimes, through conning or blackmailing victims into providing them with what they want. These crimes are much harder to prove and are far more embarrassing to the victims, so are under-reported to town guards. Female Sczarni are even more likely to con or blackmail victims, through false harrow readings, fake prostitution, and false appraisals of trade goods. The latter is typically the most risky behavior. This is why the guards typically know that they have Sczarni in their midst, but do not arrest them without suspicion or accusation of an active crime, since Sandpoint is a mostly good town ruled by laws that respect people and property. Sheriff Hemlock knows that Jubrayl is most likely the local leader, but has no recourse of action against him.

As a Sczarni without face skills or melee prowess, one might commit crimes through breaking and entry or stealth based robbery, possibly through the use of sleeping powder or potions, or might gather information or craft tools useful to other Sczarni. "Pillbug" falls into this category, as he is known among the Sczarni to create poisons. Sleeping poison is the most popular, as a dead mark may not be able to talk, but also may not be nicked again. Also, given that there are clerics in town powerful enough to "speak with dead", killing people typically takes place in the outskirts or on the docks, as it is much easier to dispose of the body. Gaining access to "Pillbug's" poison requires you to ask "Have there been any happy pillbugs, lately?" of him.

The base of operations in Sandpoint is the Fatman's Feedbag, which Jubrayl owns and acts as a "waiter" and Gressel is the bartender for. The Feedbag is the rowdiest bar in town, so many times the sheriff is called down to figure out who to arrest as various bar fights break out almost daily. This additional work tends to be mostly a distraction for the Sheriff away from the Sczarni's other more lucrative activities, thus the ale is cheap (watered down and spiked with moonshine), and flows quickly.

So as a Sczarni, I would find marks, and either report on them to Jubrayl, Gessel or Pillbug, or try to run my own con on them. Cons can be broken up into short cons and long cons, short ones have to do with trying to extract money quickly and leaving quickly, so selling fake jewelry or fake harrow readings would fall into this category. The hope would be to be long gone before the con was discovered. These are risky because such events can be *remembered,* making it harder to score marks later. Long cons might be befriending someone for long enough for them to reveal information about their money or information that might be useful to Jubrayl. Getting in good with Jubrayl could lead me to better scores or becoming a reliable "Cousin" or even an "Uncle" myself. Then I would try to make myself inconspicuous, possibly by being helpful. Being gone all the time is almost as good as having a day job, so adventuring wouldn't be out of the question, especially if the group I'm with has loose morals with regards to order. But adventuring might conflict with the goals of becoming an "Uncle", because while you gain power, you lose some of your connectedness and awareness of what's going on around you. Conning a noble might be an option, but might also lead to a world of trouble, as nobles typically have connections to others in power, so consider the noble families high risk, high reward targets.

Thanks for the input, Justin. As mentioned in the hangouts, I will be editing prior dialogue and going from there.

As far as his background and plans, Deren is a support-guy. His involvement in Sczarni businesses will have largely been one of background (invisible) support and keeping the family going. His offensive hexes aren't really obvious (being spell-like abilities) and his healing wouldn't draw attention from family marks. That said, he isn't planning to move up in the ranks of the family - he is pretty content with his level of involvement and lacks much in the way of ambition.

If that lack of motivation and ambition annoys his elders in the family, then that could be interesting RP opportunities which I would welcome. For now, though, I will be content with him being a "Varisian" who doesn't make it a point to stand out much from the others and doesn't look for much trouble. When the trouble finds him, we will enjoy the experience and where it takes us.

    Places in Varisia

    Magnimar

A sheer cliff, the Seacleft, cuts through the city's heart, dividing Magnimar into its two major sections: the Summit, upon the cliff's top, and the Shore, below. This in itself would be impressive, however, Magnimar's sprawling slate rooftops and marble avenues stretch from the foundations of the Irespan, a ruined stone bridge of impossible size, to beyond the western banks of the Yondabakari River.

A slight underdog, Magnimar wages an open war of coins and lies with Korvosa to the east. Both city-states vie for control over vassal communities , natural resources , and trade with the cosmopolitan south. In its constant striving to outdo and exceed Korvosa, Magnimar has opened its gates and harbor to all comers , encouraging traders from many lands to discover the wonders of Varisia away from the excessive taxes and regulations of Korvosa, yet in greater safety than is offered by pirate havens like Riddleport.

More than 16,000 people make their homes in Magnimar, with the majority of that populace consisting of humans of Chelish decent, although an increasing number have Varisian blood. Shoanti are often thought of as little more than brutes, and aren't often trusted. Magnimar also hosts a second transient population: thousands of regular traders from far-flung nations . Many of these merchants , emissaries, and adventurers have homes that they reside in while passing through but that otherwise remain empty.

    Spoiler: Sczarni Eyes Only
    Show
Numerous criminal elements operate throughout Magnimar. The oldest of these groups, the Night Scales, see themselves as the rightful masters of the city's
criminal underworld. The Night Scales are frequently challenged by the Sczarni, who also operate in great numbers in Magnimar, enough that each group takes nicknames like the Creepers, the Tower Girls, or the Washside Wringers; adopting criminal specialties; and operating in locally known turfs. Jaster Frallino, an aging, merciless tough with thick scars around his neck, leads the largest and most influential group, the Gallowed, from a car􀂋van of wagons almost directly below Lord-Mayor Grobaras's palatial home, Defiant's Garden.

Sandpoint A fishing, farming, and glassblowing town founded by Magnimarian nobles, Sandpoint is quickly growing in size and may soon rival Riddleport. Easy access to water and the presence of pre-built fortifications and a natural moat created a defense that allowed most common people to forget the troubles of frontier life and concentrate on commercial and artistic endeavors.

Galduria Galduria survives primarily by ferrying grain and lumber along the Lampblack River and Ember Lake, but its true claim to fame is its college. By far the oldest structure in town, the Twilight Academy is one of the premier schools of magic in Varisia, rivaled only by the Stone of the Seers in Magnimar and the notorious Acadamae of Korvosa, both of which consider it an upstart devoid of their own rich heritages. Founded in Galduria specifically to avoid the political pressure and intrigues of those two cities, the Twilight Academy has a reputation for being experimental and unconventional in many of its practices, but frequent donations to public works keep locals from probing too deeply into the occasional haywire spell or necromantic accident.

    Spoiler: Sczarni Eyes Only
    Show
The Twilight Academy provides an opportunity for Sczarni to profit through sales of goods needed to practice and cast arcane spells. As such it is a good place to sell gems, because the scholars needs can easily outstrip any local merchants. The local contact is "Cousin" Shelk Barnas, who hasn't quite reached the status of "Uncle," though he is actively pursuing it. His rivals are in the neighboring towns of Nybor, Wartle, and Wolf's Ear.

So, given that we started with 600 GP above the usual starting gold of a level 1 PC, his offer of 100 GP split four or five ways does not inspire me as a player to go on such a risky and poorly conceived mission. Deren's response will be much like Sminerano's - incredulous and unconvinced.

That said, does anyone have a better approach we could try? If this ties into the AP and gives us as PCs/players a better grasp on things, I am willing to go, but we need a plan with better odds of success before I am likely to stick Deren's neck out much for this spiteful old man...
