Based off that, I assume you stopped playing before they raised the stat-caps. The stat-cap is now 200 for all stats.

For items you have, list the PoSI items you have, they are quite the grind.

I also recommend looking into Expeditions in the Forgotten Quarter. I believe they'd have changed it. Also, look into Notability (you can trade it making waves for it) and obtaining a Profession (opportunity card unlocked from having Notability).

Lastly, could you link your mantlepiece for us to put in the OP?

Perhaps make some screenshots of your inventory and post those? Apart from items, consider showing the content of your "Ambition", "Intrigue" and "Story" qualities.

Not exactly - leaving the area where you go with Nightmares 8+ will remove a significant amount of progress with your dreams, but if they're high enough, it won't remove them completely. If you have a Memory of Light you'll lose it, but go to a different place, which will only lower the "Is someone there?" dream.

I've thought about this a lot! And I'd use different systems for them, because they feel very different.

For Fallen London, I've been tinkering with the GUMSHOE system, but a massive GUMSHOE hack where instead of Investigative and General Abilities, you spend points from your Connections and other Qualities in order to dig up facts and get bonuses. It feels very true to the game, and the "drip-by-drip" narrative style of Fallen London lends itself really well to the GUMSHOE concept of giving out small bits of information through clues.

From what I've experienced of Chuubo's Marvellous Wish-Granting Engine, it could very much cover Fallen London as well; it has a lot of qualities that suit it to a slow, sometimes meandering sort of narrative, and it has a story arc system that rewards characters for going through various narrative arcs. It's very reminiscent of how Fallen London uses various Qualities for story arcs.

On the other hand, Sunless Sea seems very much like a nautical game of the Torchbearer RPG, and that's a hack I have yet to write as well...but want to. It's a game with a slow resource grind, where you start stacking up negative conditions as you keep pushing forward, and have to retreat back to your hometown to patch up and use your loot to maybe improve your living situation.

Oh, what are PoSI items? Sorry, it's been a very, very long time since I last played(If I go by what it says in the "What's new in Fallen London" page, it says December 2012....) and the terminology is not something I've remembered.

I'm trying to set up a Salon, but have no Connected: Summerset. I've bought a Fellowship, but my only option without at least one point of Connected will drop my Connected: Benthic.

    a) Is there a way to get 1 point of Summerset without being on good terms with the University?
    b) Is Benthic 10 enough to survive -50cp with at least 1 point intact?

Edit: never mind, I worked it out after wasting 100 echoes. Apparently Fellowships are reusable...

    a. I don't believe so.
    b. Yes. Reaching 10 requires 55cp, so you should be left with Connected 2 (could be as high as 5 depending on how much cp you actually have).

Your previos mention of island hopping makes me think about the Voyage of scientific discovery - but there isn't anything more to it than you already have. The above are all things you could work on (the Ambition got updated recently, the rest was there for some time).

Beyond that, I have all but the 1500 Brilliant Souls residence and the 40k Prisoners Honey Residence.(Brass Embassy Guest Room and Royal Bethelem).
Speaking of those, it is better to get them outside Penstock's (the Bethelem can be acquired from the "A merry gentleman" card for 50 Antique Mysteries, whilethe Brass Embassy is available from the "Burning Shadows" card (costing 500 x Brilliant Soul, 100 x Muscaria Brandy, 1 x Brass Ring and also requiring Connected: Hell 50, an Intimate of Devils 1; in both cases you get a few items in addition to the keys)

Wow, is that really all that's been added since I last played? That's...a bit disappointing. Unless you just mean I need to do the things you singled out and that once I do I'll open up some other stuff. Otherwise I'm not sure if it would be worth coming back for so little, I'd just get bored again :-(

I can't say what exactly and how much was added, since I'm a rather new player (at least compared to you), so things that for me were always there, may be something completely new for you.

Between the Ambition, finishing the Jack of Smiles case, the affair of the box, getting your Archeologist to 5 and finding the Cave of Nadir you have a decent amount of things to do. And looking at my stuff, you should also have be able to solve the Case of the Absconding Devil, uncover the secrets of the Face-Tailor, and find some things about Clay Men in Polythreme (an Unfinished Story).

From what I can tell, you have yet to complete the Affair of the Box (check Mahogany Hall and Spite), I think.

PoSI items are new slots for your inventory (mainly increased Dreaded, Bizarre, and Respectable), I believe that you need to get one to be a full PoSI. They are quite costly, the Zubmarine is one of them, so you might have been grinding for some of those (Bazaar Sidestreets is where to start a lot of them, or get the items).

There now are 5-card lodgings, but they are really expensive, excepts at Christmas. At Halloween, you now can get a destiny.

Looking at acquaintances, you haven't met the Regretful Soldier (you find him from an opportunity card in Watchmaker's Hill) if you are interested.

Look in the forgotten Quarter to become a better Archeologist, and eventually find the Cave of the Nadir (it'll continue the Secular Missionary and Revolutionary Firebrand stories).

You can sail, acquire research, and get back into good terms with the University, and join the Dilmun Club in proper.

You can try to get a profession and become notable. Lastly, they brought back Knife and Candle (joinable at Watchmaker's Hill for 101 Whispered Secrets).

Just as a note, for the Jack-of-Smiles case, I recommend just destroying the workshop. The extra information I uncovered from not destroying it was not worth keeping Jack on the streets.

Alright thanks, sounds like i need to work at keeping Nightmares down until i have gotten my hands on a Memory of Light. Still.. it is nice to hear that the works of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson is still treasured.. even in places as dark as fallen London.

I've decided that rather than spend nearly 400 actions grinding Prisoner's Honey for a yacht, I'm going to try to get my Comprehensive Bribes through the Fidgeting Writer. I am sure that this is an excellent decision that I will not regret at all. (Though, I've gotten two Lenses of Black Glass out of three Tales of Terror today, so perhaps luck is with me.)

The Zee-Clipper costs 1 Legal Document, 12 Use of Villains (the step before acquiring it takes either another Use of Villains or a Legal Document and some Connected Docks and Society). The Zubmarine costs 20 Strong-Backed Labour, 7 Bejewelled Lens and 20 Whirring Contraptions (with the earlier part requiring a Tale of the Future - written in the Court - or Scholar of the Correspondence 3).

Up to you I would imagine, I know I personally used my STrong-Backed Labour on my Zubmarine, though I could have sworn that was the easiest part to get for it back in the day, the Whirring Contrpations or whatever are what I recall being the worst.

The Chair is nice, since the associated opportunity card gives you 1.8 echo (in candles) for a single action. How many SBL do you have, and how much of the other things you need? Also, what is your profession? Both Rat-Catcher (gives 1 SBL/week) and Murderer (give 2 Magnificent Diamonds - great if you don't already have 7 for the Bejewelled Lens) could help in your pursuits.

It is - you can get them for echoes (in the Sidestreets) or for some (mostly) easily grindable things (in the Clay Quarter). Contraptions are much more of a grind, and most sources of Magnificent Diamonds have a random element (either the diamond is a random reward, or the source is an opportunity card), which can make getting them very annoying.

It's kinda odd, the last two mornings before I fell asleep while laying in my bed, I've been remembering more and more things about Fallen London. Most of it is just fragments still, but it's amazing the kind of stuff that comes back to me.

So uhh, is anyone else going after Mr. Eaten's name? I just got a warning from the game about it(I actually haven't done anything besides log-in since I started posting, today is the first day I clicked on anything involving the story) and it offered me a chance to opt-out, or continue. I naturally picked continue because I remember being determined to go down that path back in the day and it still gave me a "Bad End" in case I change my mind.

Edit: Also, what is this whole "Player Romance" bit? Any point in indulging in it? People don't get serious about it do they? I mean I'd probably like to give it a go, but only so long as the other person realizes it's purely for the game, as I am a happily married person. I know some other games people can get really, really serious about that kind of thing.

Seeking is currently on hiatus - it is supposed to return one day (although in a somewhat different form), but when will that happen? I guess sometime between now and 2115 is a good guess ;)

Also, what is this whole "Player Romance" bit? Any point in indulging in it?
From what I've read, not really - the benefit is marginable, though if you absolutely want to explore everything that is possible in FL, it may be worth it just to have the wedding. Otherwise the spouses you can get are better (thanks to their opportunity cards).

People don't get serious about it do they?
I'd imagine most aren't - though there will always be some extremists...

Awww, that sucks :-(. The little note said that it would come back in 2014. It's May 2015 now peoples!!!

On another note, what is this whole "Patron" thing, and does anyone that's higher then my stats and further along wish to become mine?

In FL it is only 1893 ;) Also consider how many things say that they will continue/be available "soon" - despite spending years in such a state...

If you reach 200 in a stat (boosts from items don't count) you can choose a specialization (basically the next step in the Person of Little/No Importance thing), and then you can train people in that stat (becoming their Patron). However training cannot help once they reach 100 in that stat (items do count here).

Oh, so in other words I'm stuck in the no-mans land. Over 100 so I can't be trained, under 200 so I can't train.

What about the Plant storyline? I went to click on it and clicked "Find me a contact" and it said there were no qualifying contacts. Is the "Attending to a needs of a Singular Plant" no longer a thing?

A patron is someone who is a POSI who is helping someone who isn't a POSI. You probably are a POSI already, so you can't have a patron.

    Edit: NInja'd.

Actually, do we have an equivalent of "Ninja'd" for Fallen London? Anything that is famous for stealth? Cat'd? Ratted? Masterthief'd?

It is, but your contacts might not have the same Tournament quality as you. I have 2, for example, and can only challenge people who also have 2.
