    Default [Prestige Class] Voivode [PEACH]

    VOIVODE

-Long have the forces of good sought to slay those horrors that return from beyond the grave. Most stand in defiance until inevitably slain or retired, but there is another path. There is an appeal in immortality, and the vile powers provided through necromancy. Even the most honorable warriors may fall to this temptation, and those that fall from grace into an embrace of the undead find their powers warped by their new found faith, becoming a horrific champion of the dead known as a voivode.
-Role: Fallen heroes, newfound villains, voivodes fill a simular niche as antipaladins and indeed in some ways could be considered another breed of such. Rather than pledged to evil itself, or necessarily being of chaos and evil, voivodes are sworn to the undead and more often than not a patron of the creatures they once constantly worked to slay.
-Alignment: Voivodes are universally evil, their methods as well as their state of being wholly vile. Given the nature of what they were before, many cling to some semblance to a code of honor, imposed by themselves or their patron.
    -Hit Die: d10.

    Requirements
To qualify to become a voivode, a character must fulfill all the following criteria.
    -Alignment: Any evil.
    -Base Attack Bonus: +5
-Special: To become a voivode, one must have had five levels in paladin and these levels cannot have been converted to antipaladin levels. Alternatively, provided they have meet all other prerequisites, one may become a voivode if they are trained by another voivode. Regardless of the case, a voivode must worship a patron that provides the undead subdomain, or revere undeath itself.

    Class Skills
-The voivode's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Bluff (Cha), Craft (Int), Handle Animal (Cha), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge (nobility) (Int), Knowledge (religion) (Int), Profession (Wis), Ride (Dex) Sense Motive (Wis), and Spellcraft (Cha).
-Skill Ranks at Each Level: 2 + Int modifier.

*Class features are based upon the character's paladin level, or more accurately their ex-paladin level, plus their levels in the voivode prestige class. A character is unable to become a 16th level voivode prior to 20th level.

    Class Features
All the following are class features of the voivode prestige class.
-Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Voivodes gain no proficiency with any weapon or armor.
-Paladin Corruption: By becoming a voivode, a paladin's abilities become warped, corrupted by their patron. A voivode adds their ex-paladin level to their voivode level for the purpose of the acquisition and advancement of class features, described below as effective paladin levels. In addition, a character who has chosen paladin as their favored class may treat levels gained in voivode as levels gained in paladin to the same purpose. The following are class features acquired by the corruption of the paladin class.
    • Aura of Evil (Ex): The power of a voivode's aura of evil is equal to his effective paladin level.
    • Detect Undead (Sp): At-will, a voivode may use detect undead, as the spell. A voivode can, as a move action, concentrate on a single creature within 60 feet and determine if it is undead, learning the strength of its aura as if having studied it for 3 rounds. While focusing on one individual, the voivode does not detect the presence of other undead creatures within range.
    • Death Smite (Su): Once per day, a voivode can call out to the powers of death to aid him in him in battle. As a swift action, the voivode chooses one target within sight to smite. The voivode then may add his Charisma bonus (if any) to his attack rolls and adds his effective paladin level to all damage rolls made against the target of his smite. If he uses a coup de gras on the target of his death smite, he gains the benefits of death knell, using the voivode's effective paladin level -3 for the purpose of duration. Regardless of the target, death smite attacks automatically bypass any DR the creature might possess.
-The death smite effect remains until the target of the effect is dead or the next time the voivode rests and regains his uses of this ability. At effective paladin level 4, and at every three levels thereafter, the voivode may use death smite one additional time per day, to a maximum of seven times per day at effective paladin level 19.
    • Touch of Corruption (Su): Beginning at effective paladin level 2, a voivode surrounds his hand with a fiendish flame, causing terrible wounds to open on those he touches. Each day he can use this ability a number of times equal to 1/2 his effective paladin level + his Charisma modifier. As a touch attack, a voivode can cause 1d6 points of damage for every two effective paladin levels he possesses. Using this ability is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity.
-Alternatively, a voivode can use this power to heal undead creatures, restoring 1d6 hit points for every two effective paladin levels he possesses. This ability is modified by any feat, spell, or effect that specifically works with the lay on hands paladin class feature.
    • Aura of Cowardice (Su): At effective paladin level 3, a voivode radiates a palpably daunting aura that causes all enemies within 10 feet to take a –4 penalty on saving throws against fear effects. Creatures that are normally immune to fear lose that immunity while within 10 feet of a voivode with this ability. This ability functions only while the voivode remains conscious, not if he is unconscious or dead.
    • Plague Bringer (Ex): At effective paladin level 3, the powers of darkness make a voivode a beacon of corruption and disease. A voivode does not take any damage or take any penalty from diseases. He can still contract diseases and spread them to others, but he is otherwise immune to their effects.
    • Cruelty (Su): At effective paladin level 3, and every three levels thereafter, a voivode can select one cruelty. Each cruelty adds an effect to the voivode’s touch of corruption ability. Whenever the voivode uses touch of corruption to deal damage to one target, the target also receives the additional effect from one of the cruelties possessed by the voivode. This choice is made when the touch is used. The target receives a Fortitude save to avoid this cruelty. If the save is successful, the target takes the damage as normal, but not the effects of the cruelty. The DC of this save is equal to 10 + 1/2 the voivode's effective paladin level + the voivode’s Charisma modifier.
-At effective paladin level 3, the voivode can select from the following initial cruelties.
      ---Fatigued: The target is fatigued.
---Shaken: The target is shaken for 1 round per level of the voivode.
---Sickened: The target is sickened for 1 round per level of the voivode.
-At effective paladin level 6, a voivode adds the following cruelties to the list of those that can be selected.
---Dazed: The target is dazed for 1 round.
---Diseased: The target contracts a disease, as if the voivode had cast contagion, using his effective paladin level as his caster level.
---Staggered: The target is staggered for 1 round per two effective paladin levels of the voivode.
-At effective paladin level 9, a voivode adds the following cruelties to the list of those that can be selected.
---Cursed: The target is cursed, as if the voivode had cast bestow curse, using his effective paladin level as his caster level.
---Exhausted: The target is exhausted. The voivode must have the fatigue cruelty before selecting this cruelty.
---Frightened: The target is frightened for 1 round per two effective paladin levels of the voivode. The voivode must have the shaken cruelty before selecting this cruelty.
---Nauseated: The target is nauseated for 1 round per three levels of the voivode. The voivode must have the sickened cruelty before selecting this cruelty.
---Poisoned: The target is poisoned, as if the voivode had cast poison, using the voivode’s effective paladin level as the caster level.
-At effective paladin level 12, a voivode adds the following cruelties to the list of those that can be selected.
---Blinded: The target is blinded for 1 round per effective paladin level of the voivode.
---Deafened: The target is deafened for 1 round per effective paladin level of the voivode.
---Paralyzed: The target is paralyzed for 1 round.
---Stunned: The target is stunned for 1 round per four effective paladin levels of the voivode.
-These abilities are not cumulative. Once a cruelty is chosen, it can’t be changed.
    • Channel Negative Energy (Su): Beginning at effective paladin level 4, a voivode gains the supernatural ability to channel negative energy like a cleric. Using this ability consumes two uses of his touch of corruption ability. A voivode uses his level as his effective cleric level when channeling negative energy. This is a Charisma-based ability.
    • Undead Minions (Sp): Starting at effective paladin level 5, a voivode may raise the dead to serve his will. This ability functions as either animate dead, create undead or its greater counterpart, using his effective paladin level as his caster level and requiring no material components. A voivode may use his animate dead ability twice per day or his create undead ability once per day, but not both in a given day. At any given time, the total Hit Dice of the undead a voivode has raised by means of this class feature must be equal to or less than his effective paladin level. Although a voivode does not obtain spellcasting, he still possesses a caster level equal to his effective paladin level - 3.
    • Aura of Despair (Su): At effective paladin level 8, enemies within 10 feet of a voivode take a –2 penalty on all saving throws. This penalty does not stack with the penalty from aura of cowardice. This ability functions only while the voivode is conscious, not if he is unconscious or dead.
    • Revenant Aura (Su): Starting at effective paladin level 11, a voivode can expend two uses of his death smite ability to grant the ability to all allies within 10 feet, using his bonus. Allies must use death smite by the start of the voivode's next turn and bonuses last for 1 minute. Using this ability is a free action.
    • Weapons of Sin (Su): Starting at effective paladin level 14, any weapon wielded by a voivode is treated as evil-aligned for the purposes of overcoming damage reduction. This takes the place of the paladin's Aura of Faith class feature.
    • Moroi's Resistance (Ex): At effective paladin level 17, voivode gains DR 5/magic and silver. This takes the place of the paladin's Aura of Righteousness class feature.
    • Champion of the Undead (Ex): At effective paladin level 20, a voivode becomes immune to all death spells and effects and their damage reduction increases to DR 10/magic and silver. In addition, he is treated as an undead creature for the purposes of spells and special abilities (such as being healed by negative energy but harmed by positive energy). Furthermore, if a voivode slays a creature that is the target of his death smite, he may cast animate dead or create undead as a swift action upon them. Undead creatures raised this way are treated as having been raised through the undead minions class feature, but do not count against the number of times they may cast either spell in a given day.

    -Runed Blade: When an individual becomes a voivode, they are bestowed with, or themselves forge, a magical weapon emblazoned with runes referred to as a runed blade. The runed blade is always a slashing weapon, chosen at the time it is acquired. If the voivode's runed blade is broken, he may reforge it or declare a new slashing weapon his runed blade by means of a ritual. Whichever the case, the ritual takes 24 hours and costs 200gp per effective paladin level of the voivode. If the voivode wishes to turn a new weapon into his runed blade, it must be of masterwork quality and it loses any enchantments placed upon it as part of the ritual. A voivode's runed blade advances as follows, based upon his effective paladin level;

    Table: Runed Blade
Effective Paladin Level Enhancement Bonus Special
    1st-2nd +1 Voivode's Foci
    3rd-4th +1 Resilient Blade
    5th-6th +2 Special Abilities
    7th-8th +2 Fortify Wielder
    9th-10th +3 -
    11th-12th +3 Uttercold Blade
    13th-14th +4 -
    15th-16th +4 Vampiric Blade
    17th-18th +5 -
    19th-20th +5 Voivode's Phylactery

    • Voivode's Foci (Su): A voivode may use his runed blade as an unholy symbol for the purpose of any class features or spells that require the use of one. A voivode may not use his death smite if he is not in possession of his runed blade.
    • Resilient Blade (Su): Starting at effective paladin level 3, a voivode's runed blade gains a bonus to its hardness equal to half its owner's effective paladin level, to a minimum of one.
    • Special Abilities: Starting at effective paladin level 5, a voivode may practice an hour long ritual to change the properties of his runed blade. By exchanging his runed blade's enhancement bonus, he may bestow upon it any weapon enchantment it is eligible for, provided the runed blade's enhancement bonus remains at least +1.
    • Fortify Wielder (Su): A voivode's runed blade, starting at effective paladin level 7, bestows upon him a bonus to all saving throws equal to half its bonus from Resilient Blade, to a minimum of one.
    • Uttercold Blade (Su): Beginning at effective paladin level 11, in exchange for a single use of the voivode's touch of corruption ability, he may channel it through his runed blade. Using this ability is a swift action and adds the damage of his Touch of Corruption to his weapon attack, dealing half of the touch's damage as cold damage and the other half as damage resulting from negative energy. A voivode may add the effect of a single cruelty he possesses to this attack. If the voivode's runed blade possesses a special ability that bestows upon it a different damage type, such as the flaming special ability, it uses that damage type instead of cold.
    • Vampiric Blade (Su): Beginning at effective paladin level 15, whenever a voivode lands a critical hit on a living creature with his runed blade, the voivode regains hit points equal to the damage done. These hit points cannot exceed his maximum.
    • Lich's Phylactery (Su):Upon reaching effective paladin level 19, should a voivode be slain but his runed blade remains intact, the voivode reforms adjacent to his runed blade, following an identical process to that of lich. If his type wasn't undead previously, the voivode's type becomes undead upon reforming.

    ARCHETYPAL VOIVODES
Not all voivodes walked the same road as a paladin, as such, not all voivodes are the same. Below are a set of options modifying the voivode prestige class, which require one to have been of a particular archetype or been trained by a voivode that followed that path.

    • Fortify Wielder (Su): A voivode's runed gun, starting at effective paladin level 7, bestows upon him a bonus to all saving throws equal to half its bonus from Resilient Gun, to a minimum of one.
    • Uttercold Shot (Su): Beginning at effective paladin level 11, in exchange for a single use of the voivode's touch of corruption ability, he may channel it through his runed gun. Using this ability is a swift action and adds the damage of his Touch of Corruption to his weapon attack, dealing half of the touch's damage as cold damage and the other half as damage resulting from negative energy. A voivode may add the effect of a single cruelty he possesses to this attack. If the voivode's runed gun possesses a special ability that bestows upon it a different damage type, such as the flaming special ability, it uses that damage type instead of cold.
    • Vampiric Shot (Su): Beginning at effective paladin level 15, whenever a voivode lands a critical hit on a living creature with his runed gun, the voivode regains hit points equal to the damage done. These hit points cannot exceed his maximum.
    • Voivode's Phylactery (Su):Upon reaching effective paladin level 19, should a voivode be slain but his runed gun remains intact, the voivode reforms adjacent to his runed gun, following an identical process to that of lich. If his type wasn't undead previously, the voivode's type becomes undead upon reforming.

    Psionic Runed Blade
Prerequisite: Purifier paladin archetype, or a psionic character trained by a voivode.
Special: This may be combined with any of the above options.
    Spoiler
    Show

-Undead minions: This functions identically to the standard class feature, except it is treated as originating in psionics and the voivode has a manifester level equal to their effective paladin level - 3.
-Psionic Runed Blade: This functions identically to the runed blade class feature, except that the weapon is psionic in nature and draws from the special abilities available to psionic weapons instead of magic weapons.

    Runed Mind
Prerequisite: Soulknife trained by a voivode.

-Undead minions: This functions identically to the standard class feature, except it is treated as originating in psionics and the voivode has a manifester level equal to their effective paladin level - 3.
    -Runed Mindblade: When a soulknife becomes a voivode, their mind blade transforms into a runed mindblade. The voivode loses their enhanced mind blade progression. A voivode's runed mindblade advances as follows, based upon his effective paladin level + his soulknife level;

    Table: Runed Mindblade
Effective Paladin Level Enhancement Bonus Special
    1st-2nd +1 Voivode's Foci
    3rd-4th +1 -
    5th-6th +2 Special Abilities
    7th-8th +3 -
    9th-10th +4 -
    11th-12th +5 -
    13th-14th +6* Uttercold Mindblade
    15th-16th +7* -
    17th-18th +8* Vampiric Mindblade
    19th-20th +9* Rapid Reconfiguration
*A voivode's tuned mind blade may not possess an enhancement bonus greater than +5, but they have more than 5 for the purpose of exchanging for special abilities.
    • Voivode's Foci (Su): A voivode may use his runed blade as an unholy symbol for the purpose of any class features or spells that require the use of one.
    • Special Abilities: Starting at effective paladin level 5, a voivode may practice an hour long ritual to change the properties of his runed blade. By exchanging his runed mindblade's enhancement bonus, he may bestow upon it any combination of weapon enchantments a soulknife of equal level may bestow upon their weapon, provided the runed mindblade's enhancement bonus remains at least +1.
    • Uttercold Mindblade (Su): Beginning at effective paladin level 13, in exchange for a single use of the voivode's touch of corruption ability, he may channel it through his runed mindblade. Using this ability is a swift action and adds the damage of his Touch of Corruption to his weapon attack, dealing half of the touch's damage as cold damage and the other half as damage resulting from negative energy. • Rapid Reconfiguration(Su):Upon reaching effective paladin level 19, a voivode becomes able to reassign their ruined mindblade's enhancement bonus between special abilities as a full-round action.

As I am sure can be guessed, this is largely based upon the death knight class, namely the PrC out of the the Warcraft RPG, with some names changed on top of everything else. This particular post exists because, I acknowledge not all paladins charge into battle with swords so why should a class that warps the paladin force them to use a sword?

All and all, I'd love to get some feedback on this. I think I did well, for my own brew that is, but I'm not always be best judge of quality.

Update: By suggestion, the PrC has been changed from the Lich Knight to the Voivode.

    Having remembered this old home-brew, I am digging it back up with a question;

Are there any other paladin archetypes, or any classes for that matter, that should see representation as voivode archetypes? If so, what?

I think stonelord could be pretty boss. This looks cool by the way. It's nice to have another option for fallen paladins than antipaladin.

Im glad you like it. And, i'll consider that one. It would mesh oddly with the Voivode, but if I could work out a good balance between the two I think such a prestigious archetype would work quite nicely. Stone Voivode or Grave Lord for the name, perhaps? I may figure something out for that.

I really like this! It looks like a fun, and interesting alternative to the paladin. Would you consider doing a Voivode version of the Sacred Servant archetype? That's probably my favorite one, especially since I'm very flexible with deities and devoting yourself to concepts, I recently had a Sylph Sacred Servant with the air domain.

I say you gotta call it Tombstone Lord or something like that! It's too good a play on words to let pass you by! And I agree it is rather a strange archetype to fit in with this PrC, but I feel like it could be really flavorful and awesome if you figure out a way to make it mesh mechanically. I've been vaguely thinking about creating an antipaladin version of the stonelord for duergar antipaladins, but I think this could almost be even cooler.
