Heroine
Can someone tell me its its pronounced with a ween sound, or if its said like heroin? Honestly, the strangest things bug me at times.

Re: Heroine
A good heroine is like good heroin. They're both very addictive.

I use braces (also known as "curly brackets") to indicate sarcasm. If there are none present, I probably believe what I am saying; should it turn out to be inaccurate trivia, please tell me rather than trying to play along with an apparent joke I don't know I'm making.

Re: Heroine
In my Texas accent, "heroin" and "heroine" are pronounced differently, but the difference is in the first syllable.
The female hero is a "hero-in". The drug is "hair-o-in." I suspect that there are lots of regional variations.

Re: Heroine
I've always pronounced "heroine" as hero-ine or here-o-ine, while the drug "heroin" I pronounce hair-o-in. Different first part pronunciation, along with an audible e at the end.

Re: Heroine
I'm jumping on the Hero-in, hair-oh-in bandwagon, though heroine is about half way between the two. My regional accent is more or less U.S. Midwest, though it's big city U.S. Midwest. There's also some differences in syllable stress for the "O".
I would really like to see a game made by Obryn, Kurald Galain, and Knaight from these forums.

Re: Heroine
Well, I'm pretty sure that due to some weird 19th century ideas, they pretty much have same etymology/mean the same thing anyway.

Rush in and die, dogs—I was a man before I was a king.

Re: Heroine
Huh, never heard of them being pronounced differently. I grew up in NW Pennsylvania, and am living in Northern Virginia now; they've always both been "HAIR oh IN." I'll put it on the list next to Don/Dawn.

Re: Heroine
HEER-o-in / HAIR-o-in is how I've always both pronounced it and heard it said, as well (Michigan here). I suppose that is technically incorrect, although I hadn't realised it until now. Looking at the words, I can certainly see how it makes sense, and I might well have pronounced it correctly had I encountered it in text before I had heard it said.

Re: Heroine
And this is why the Boys Like Girls song sits close to the top of my list - "I feel like a hero and you are my heroine.
Do you know that your love is the sweetest sin?" It's almost too perfect.
Still need to write that superhero though...
