    Default Gazetteer of the Stick

For those unfamiliar with the term, a gazetteer is a geographic dictionary. Below is a gazetteer of the OotS world. I'm sure it's incomplete and would appreciate any additions or corrections.

    Notes

    1. The links after each entry are where the name is first mentioned in the strips. Additional links are places where further info on that name can be found.

    2. Abbreviations used for sources:
    • W&XPs Extras = the map on the last page of War and XPs
    • SS&DT = Snips, Snails, and Dragon Tales
    • SoD = Start of Darkness
    • OoPCs = On the Order of PCs
    • DStP = Don't Split the Party
    • DStP_DE = Don't Split the Party Digital Edition
    • BM<roman numeral> = Bonus Material page number at end of DStP_DE
    • HPGHS = How the Paladin Got His Scar
    • SC = map of Southern Continent on page 50 of Good Deeds Gone Unpunished
    • NC = map of Northern Continent on page after 1131 of Utterly Dwarfed
    • WC = map of the Western Continent on strip 698
    • 1044 = navagation chart of the Dwarven Lands on strip 1044

    3. Some generic terms are used for certain types of features.
    • stream -- any linear waterway, such as rivers, creeks, etc.
    • summit -- any individual high point such as mountains, peaks, etc.
    • range -- any group of mountains or hills
    • road -- any thoroughfare such as streets, lanes, alleys, etc.

    4. The map of Üptharrnor (Uptharnorr) on page iv of DStP_DE is sufficiently different from Üppentharnorth in the Northern Continent map that the former is ignored in this gazetteer.

Great job! I wonder if there's enough information all around to sketch a map... I know we've seen the planet in-comic, but knowing where to put what would be nice.

Feedback: I think the Dwarven Lands should be added. While it might be that they have separate kingdoms (or whatever), the dwarves in comic seem to talk as if it is all one place. It is essentially the same as the Elven Lands. I think mentioning the "Human Lands" (0084 first mention, if I am not mistaken) might also be an idea. Yes, those lands contain individual countries, but it seems to be the collective name for those lands. (And no, I can't remember the first reference for the Dwarven Lands)

I also think buldings and institutions of note should be mentioned. Lets face it, iof The Giant names it, there is a very good chance it ias of plot importance.

Finaly, I like the format. Very easy to find things. However, condensing things via spoiler tags might be a very good idea.

I noticed that you call rivers, such as Blue River or Cerulean River, "streams", which is incorrect.

I suspect you're doing this to avoid "{River} river", but you have this "repeat" issue in other entries: {Street} street, {Bay} bay, etc. I would suggest either not worrying about repeating "river" or dealing with this issue generally:

Blue River, in the Southern Lands, flows into Cobalt Bay (W&XPs Extras)
    Avenue Street, in Cliffport 337
Cobalt Bay, on the north side of the Cyan Peninsula (W&XPs Extras)
Hidden Valley, in the Southern Mountains (W&XPs Extras)

No where near that much info, except where maps have already been provided.

The only planet-wide view I know of is the familicide one. There you can see the Western Continent and the main continent with a narrowish area where the Northern and Southern lands are divided. If you look at the area some distance south of that narrowing on the west side of the Southern Land, you can see the Cyan Peninsula looking much as it does in the map at the end of W&XPs. It has a string of three islands tailing away from it.

There's the map of the Western Continent here. You can't make out all the names fo the countries on it just by expanding the image. Possibly they could be read if one or more image sharpening algorithms are applied. Has anyone done this?

That's not an error nor is that the reason for it. I was imitating the practice of another gazetteer, which combines all linear bodies of water under the class of "stream". It doesn't matter if they're the mightiest river or the tiniest babbling brook, they're all streams there. That DB doesn't have streets and roads, but I was doing the same for those under "street". Probably should change that to "road", since that's a bit more generic term.

Along those lines, that site uses "summit" for individual peaks and "range" for groups of them. I didn't follow that but will change it to do so. There are no individual mountains named in OotS, but several ranges.

However, I'm not going to follow its practice is for "populated places". That DB uses that term for everything from the biggest megapolises to the smallest hamlet. I'm going to keep calling them cities, towns and villages, as appropriate.

I've decided for now not to add buildings and such. I may change my mind later. I'll also add Dwarven Lands, but not Human Lands,. The latter are too extensive. Elves and dwarves mainly live in relatively small areas while humans live all over the planet.

I'm pretty sure they can be read just by looking at the online image, actually, but it's not needed: the version in the BRitF print edition is legible. If you don't have a copy I can give you the names from mine, if you specify which ones you can't make out.

Never thought to look at the paper version. But even with that, my crappy eyesight (even with glasses) makes it kind of hard to read. It would help if I had a magnifying glass, but I don't have one handy.

Of those I couldn't make out before, I see The Grisly Coast down in the south, Freeland, Fangland, and Eviltopia up in the north. But still can't make out the country north of Dictatoria.

It's fun how a new index appears every now and then. I always think "Another index? We don't need that!", but then I read it and change my mind to "Yes we needed this so much!"

Thank you. I agree with you that many of the index threads are fairly useless. Not all of them; some have been useful at times. I'm glad you consider mine among the latter.

I added the Western Continent countries I was missing. The introductory article needs to be rewritten, but not tonight. I also will probably add buildings and castles and so forth that are not within cities. But again, not tonight.

ETA: I also modified the entry for Cliffport.

For some reason I feel it'd be funnier if it was Despotania, East and Despotania, West because they sorta "belong" together.

Kinda did it with Empires of Sweat/Blood/Tears, which inversely I kinda think could be the other way.... I know inconsistent!

For the first issue, that's an issue that geographers don't have a single answer to. For instance, North Korea is listed both as "Korea, North" and as "North Korea" in various references. Which way they do it is purely up the preference of the compiler.

But for both issues, these are Burlew's jokes, and I don't feel obligated to repeat them.

    Progress report:

I've updated both the intro article and the gazetteer. For the latter, I've

    • added buildings that are outside of cities. Not sure if I should add the Bleedingham galdiator arena. It's about a mile or so outside Bleedingham.
    • added a couple other places I came across: Terrorburg, Crooked Mountain
    • added Zenith Peak from the latest strip

One issue came up: there's several names formerly used for the Empires of Blood, Sweat & Tears: The Duchy of Terror, The Barren Baronies. the Quietus Federation, The Unprincipled Principalities. The problem is that we don't know which names go with which empire. Not sure how to handle this. Suggestions?

Should be NNE. (Well, technically the vampire says “north by northeast”, which is not an actual compass direction.)

I was wondering if it might make sense to also to a geographical listing. That is, instead of sorting the whole thing purely alphabetically, dividing up into continents first, then do a listing per continent? Obviously it wouldn't be 100% geographic (you'd need to draw a map for that) but this way the different regions would be more "grouped".

Would that be possible at all or does it have too few advantages and too many disadvantages to be worth it?

Don't think so. The direction meant is either Northeast by North or North Northeast. The Wikipage on points of the compass has an old compass card (a couple centuries old, at least) with those two on them, but not North by Northeast.

Qaanol, thanks for the corrections. For some reason I misread Northeast as Northwest. That would give North by Northwest, the name of the Hitchcock movie, which apparently is based on a Hamlet quote (which I was unaware of before a discussion in the strip thread.)

The old sailing directions had 24 positional courses, each about 15 degrees apart. So you had North, North by Northwest, Northwest by North, Northwest, etc. As compasses got better and sextants replaced backstaffs, that's when thing were redone in a more consistent, scientific format. Although navigation wouldn't become really precise until Nathaniel Bowditch made the scene (read up on him; it's fascinating).

Fair enough. I suppose I should change the direction. But note that theOotSverse does have sex taints, er, I mean sax tents, er ... well you know what I mean. Also they have carts o' gophers... so it seems they have advanced navigation.

It's not a bad idea and I'll consider doing it, but not now.

Someone upthread suggested that I put the list in a spoiler block. That's not a bad idea either. The only reason I haven't done it is aesthetics. The green background the spoiler blocks have is just plain ugly. I don't want my list contaminated by it. However, if I do add lists sorted by region, I'll put them in spoiler blocks, probably in the post I have reserved for future use.

Anyway, I've updated the list: Rupture Ravine from the current strip (in the places with little info list) and the four former names of the empires. Also added a link after Hobgoblin City to strip 197. It doesn't say it explicitly, but I'd be very surprised of that town in the last panel is not Hobgoblin City.

Another potential addition that I'm not sure about is Royal City. This is from an extra in DStP between 599 and 600. The Dirt Farmer and his wife are visiting it. With that name, it's probably the capital of a kingdom, although from the readings from the pamphlet the Wife has, it may not be a capital but rather a historical site like Jamestown Settlement in Virginia. Since the OotS went to the Inn immediately after the Dirt Farmer arc, and the Inn was in Somewhere, it's very likely the Dirt Farmer lives in Somewhere. Which means they may be visiting the captial of Somewhere, but it's not 100% certain. Any thoughts on whether and how to add this one?
