Gundwolf eyes the cloud of medical implements with fear and distrust, although the shout of the disembodied voice seems to inspire only rage in the half-orc's eyes. As Kristoph's weapon leaps from his hand, however, Gundwolf's eyes go wide, and his grip on his own weapon intensifies, white knuckles visible against the backdrop of his grayish skin. The barbarian appears frozen, watching as Kristoph steps toward his own blade...

"We must locate the entity...Kristoph do you see it?!" Ra'hulrhim moves forward and slips an arrow to the knocking point and his violet eyes flash and the storm cloud makes a sweep over Kristoph's longsword and settles in the doorway.

Still having my sprint sense on from when I examined the door, I move closer and begin to try to get a bead on it's entity's location, I knock a Ghost Bane arrow as part of my standard action.

As a move action, I sweep the storm could along the path with '.' in the google doc. Hoping that "If it enters a space that contains a creature, the storm stops moving for the round..." It ends up in in AA20, it also sweeps Z20, Z19, AA19.

Paying careful attention to how the cloud behaves, as I move it through the area, I'm hoping to "see something, say something" that might help us focus our attention (and maybe speed up the detection process?) and not waste time scanning a wider area.

The thundercloud floats around the corridor, crackling with electricity, but it neither reveals nor strikes any opponent. The cloud seems to slowly diminish and lose potency once it comes to a stop.

As Kristoph advances and issues his challenge, the entity controlling the sword issues another insane cackle. "Ah ah AHHHH! You know what the doctors say! DO NO HARM!!"

A moment later, Kristoph's sword and an assortment of implements lifts off the floor and flies towards the paladin. He ducks behind his shield just in time to hear and feel several of them - including his own sword - impact and bounce off of it. However, one implement - a bone saw - solidly strikes his thigh just above the knee, drawing fresh blood. The knight of Pharasma grimaces, trying to hold his concentration on the detection spell.

    Begin Round 4
    Spoiler: Combat Overview
    Show

Four weapons fly at Kristoph, only one of them hit. See dice rolls thread. Kristoph takes 4 points of damage.

Kristoph needs to make a concentration check equal to DC 14 (10 + damage dealt + spell level) in order to keep concentrating on the detect undead spell.

This is the last round of the aggressive thundercloud spell, as it was cast during Round 1 and lasts four rounds thanks to Ra'Hulhrim tapping into the ley lines.

    Group's turn!

    Spoiler: Aurora and Elian only

The fact that the spirit is invisible and obviously sentient but tortured and that it can control objects as it has proves to you that it has to be a poltergeist. Naturally invisible AND incorporeal, they are no minor threat. They cast telekinesis at will to be able to throw things - and people - around at will, and also have a powerful fear ability when/if they choose to manifest.

The cackling specter looses another volley of medical implements at Kristoph, but at the last moment, he pulls his shield up to deflect anything that would make contact. Sensing an opportunity to escape while the deranged resident of the prison gathered its power for another assault, Kristoph dashes off to join his companions on the far end of the prison. They regroup in the only known safe place to be able to discuss their plans: the old warden's room. For a moment the cackling psychotic spirit follows them, yelling obscenities and epithets, but soon his laughter dies off as he gives up the chase.

Catching their breath, they feel once again strangely at ease in the old office. Motes of dust, kicked up by the group's entrance, dance in the air and almost sparkle from being caught by the sunlight filtering in through the dirty windows.

Elian finds himself nodding idly in agreement, as he watches the previous hallway for signs of the geist. "Indeed. Given our injuries, I think it best if we prepare as best we are able for the meeting tonight." Relief is evident on Gundwolf's face as they reach the relative sanctuary of the warden's office, but after a moment it slips into something like embarrassment. As a consensus is reached about the plans for the afternoon, the half-orc opens his mouth as though to speak, his brows furrowed in frustration; after a moment's silence, however, he closes his mouth, looking almost ashamed, and nods tersely, taking his customary place at the rear of the party as they seek out the exit of the haunted prison.

Kristoph nods silently, his mind already thinking ahead to the meeting. "We can only pray and do our best - nothing else is within our grasp in any case, and our hearts are in the right place," he says, as encouragingly as he can. "The folk of Ravengro have much responsibility for the state of this prison - their superstition and fear has blinded them to the threat on their doorstep, and we must balance between calling them upon that and offering a path to redemption. Our efforts are unlikely to have made things any worse, however, so we have that comfort..."

The group makes their way out of the warden's old office, passes by the collection of old offices, and then out of the prison through the crumbling main entrance. The cool, fresh air serves to immediately invigorate them, free of the sooty, moldy odor that pervades the old prison. Furthermore, it's almost as if they feel the weight of the place lifted from their shoulders.

There is a strangled shriek off to the group's left, and before they can react, the charging form of Del'Dretch practically bowls over Ra'Hulhrim as he shrieks and squawks and headbutts the elf repeatedly in an enthusiastic greeting. Socrates, too, enjoys the freedom from the confines of the building and alights into the air, happily hooting and circling above the group as their make their way out of the courtyard. Soon the owl disappears into the distance as Aurora gets the empathic feeling that he is hungry and on the hunt.

This winter's day is cold but otherwise pleasant. The midday sun shines weakly through scattered clouds as they reenter the village of Ravengro proper from the southern road. As they approach Kendra's house at the southern edge of town, they can see that she is standing outside of the front of her house talking with a small group of five people. As the group approaches, they recognize a couple of familiar faces from around town, including Leone from the temple and Alendru, the owner of the Unfurling Scroll, among them.

Kendra lifts her hand in greeting as she catches sight of the party, and the collection of townsfolk swivel their heads at once to see them returning. Each bears a varying degree of shock or, in the case of Alendru, curiosity at the sight of the large bird walking beside the strangely dressed elf. Kendra pulls her cloak a little tighter around herself as a chill breeze blows through and greets the party, saying, "Ah, how did it go? I must admit I am glad to see you returned safely, if not perhaps a little early?" She says, an eyebrow lifted half in concern and half curiosity. Leone meanwhile makes the sign of the Spiral towards Kristoph with a friendly half-bow.

Gundwolf's face, which had relaxed into something that could almost begin to be called a smile after the party emerged from the stuffy confines of the prison into a cool breeze unhindered by walls, takes on the beginnings of an embarrassed flush before falling into his familiar sullen scowl. Otherwise, the barbarian doesn't overtly react to the group of visitors, and simply keeps his peace near the back of the party procession.

Kristoph returns Leona's greeting in kind before smiling broadly and saying, "Well met, everyone! We too are glad to be safely back, though our efforts today were not as productive as we desired. However, there is still more to be done this day - how long do we have before the meeting tonight? If possible I think we should look into an injury Miss Aurora incurred and then speak to as many of the influential townspeople as possible about what is to be done. I am sure we are on the agenda tonight as well, but it does no one any good to worry when there is good to be done and people's hearts to encourage."

After waiting for an answer he nods and pulls Leona and Aurora to the side. Looking to the priestess he explains, "During our efforts today Miss Aurora was attacked by an true horror - an undead spider somehow infused with unholy magic. The abomination's attack has left an impact on the woman's spirit that is well beyond our ability to handle. Does Father Grimburrow know a spell named in the vernacular, 'restoration?' Or perhaps does the church have a scroll of the spell?"

Once again he waits for an answer before continuing. "We found the foul spider-wight in the prison's old chapel. It was thoroughly desecrated, though originally dedicated to the Lady of Graves. I am more convinced than ever that after our company purges the ruins of the taint of undead this town must unite to re-consecrate the chapel and dedicate the entire site as a memorial to help put the ghosts and haunts to rest for good. Too many good people have lived in fear for too long - we cannot let more courageous men like Brother Chad die defending this town from an evil that can be cleansed from that place. Have we any in town likely to support such a cause at tonight's meeting?"

Elian interrupts briefly, saying "Do not sell our efforts short, friend. True, we set out to perform tasks other than what we accomplished, but the day was far from wasteful. Knowledge is yet our most powerful tool in this endeavor, and of that regard, we accomplished much."

After saying his piece, he backs away to let Kristoph finish his greetings and questions. "Kendra, is there any task with which I can provide aid before the meeting this evening? If not, I would spend what time I have perusing the professor's library."

As Elian suggests that he might return to research Kristoph steps over to Kendra and the man. "Actually, though I know Miss Kendra might find it a bit uncomfortable, I was hoping the two of you could help me reach out to the townsfolk before tonight. With your help," he looks at the young lady, "we might actually end up speaking to the right people in town to make the best impact, and I believe Elian has quite the gift for speech when he has the need. I feel that we have that need here tonight. Would you both help me in this? The books will be there in the morning."

Elian smirks at the offered praise. "Odd, though it may be, I am generally more adept at making people believe what I want them to when I do not resort to the truth. Nonetheless, I will aid you if you think my abilities would best serve in that capacity.

Aurora winces at the mention of the wight-spider, and again at the mention of Father Grimburrow, but she nods her agreement to Kristoph's story and squares her shoulders, preparing herself to ask aid of the Pharasman priest if he should prove capable of helping.

Kendra looks worriedly at Aurora as Kristoph mentions the injury, but says nothing further about it at the moment. She looks up at the sun in the sky and then ponders a moment, "The meeting is perhaps another four or five hours from now, I believe? It's slated for just after dusk at the town hall."

Leone considers the question for a moment, tapping her holy symbol in a nervous habit as usual while she thinks. "Hmmm, yes. I believe I've heard of Pharasma gifting him with that sort of powerful spell on rare occasions, but as I understand there is a fairly rare sacrifice that is needed? I'm not familiar with the details...you would have to ask Father Grimburrow himself, I'm afraid."

Alendru, Kendra and Leone each voice their assent in agreeing to support said cause. Leone indicates that Father Grimburrow and the rest of the temple would likely gladly and eagerly agree to assist in that process. According to them, the hardest sell will be the council members themselves, especially the lead councilman Hearthmount, as well as many of the more superstitious of the town's residents.

The three other townspeople talking with Kendra have stayed relatively silent during the entire exchange but cast nervous glances at Kristoph and the others as they mention spirits and undead. Perhaps it's the shock of the revelation or the conviction that the group has for their solution or even their spreading reputation and efforts, but they visibly take a moment to restrain further commentary instead of ranting like many in the village have from the beginning.

Kendra looks about ready to respond to Elian when Kristoph cuts in with his request. She casts a long look back at the house and then at Kristoph and Elian, takes a deep breath and exhales and then slowly nods. "Perhaps the sheriff and some of the merchants? Convince the law enforcement of the village and the source of money, and the council members would have to at least listen, let alone agree."

Leone puts a reassuring hand on the young witch's shoulder. "Fear not, Aurora. Pharasma will heal your wounds through Father Grimburrow. She will surely find your efforts and hearts in the right place and leave you not to suffer for too much longer. By your leave, I will accompany you to the temple?"

Alendru steps forward and interjects before Aurora has a moment, "Errm...pardon me. Aurora? Could I trouble you for a brief visit today as well, back at my store?" He looks at the other townsfolk gathered around, and then says almost conspiratorially, "I would speak with you about your commission."

As he notices the townsfolk, Kristoph turns and bows his head. "I do not think we have met, but my comrades and I have been doing everything in our power to stem the evil flowing from the prison ruins for the sake of your fair town. Please forgive us if our appearances are coarse or our ways foreign - good will can come from those outside Ravengro too," he says before rising again. "I am Kristoph, servant of our Lady of Graves, Pharasma. I pray your days are peaceful and full of great joy. Now, if you will excuse me, we must try to convince others of the cause for which we battle."

"That is a wise course of action. Let me see to my appearance for a moment inside before joining you again - I am sure a moment of washing off the grime and ash of Harrowstone will be worthwhile," the exotic half-elf says, excusing himself. After finding a wash basin and cleaning his exposed skin and armor he returns, looking every bit the ordained champion of his deity except that he is carrying both the basin and a wet wash cloth. Looking to his allies he offers the cloth to both Aurora and Elian before turning to look at the remaining members of the company.

Demonstrating his best efforts to show respect combined with concern he addresses Gundwolf and Ra'hulrhim. "Gentlemen, I am loath to leave you out of this effort, for you have been instrumental in our success both today and before. However, your appearances are unlikely to soothe troubled nerves. Would you both be willing to allow me to help you...make yourselves more presentable to the good (but often superstitious) people of this town?"

I think it sounds eminently appropriate for Aurora to go with Leone to see Father Grimburrow for healing. Unless we are concerned with convincing him of our cause - which I am not too worried about - I think he should be convince-able. Once we know what the sacrifice will require, we can reconnect and handle it.

I am really not at all sure how to handle our less cultured PCs. It would probably be easiest to have Elian and Kristoph do the shaking-hands and kissing-babies business and leave the others to do most anything else...but I don't want to do that either IC or OoC if we have a better idea. Do we?

Regarding making them more presentable I figure that an untrained Disguise check by Kristoph, taking 20 for a 24, could at least get them both clean and nonthreatening...opinions?

Elian steps forward, presenting his most disarming of smiles- careful to keep his less normal features hidden. "As my companion has suggested, but failed to make clear, we would be thrilled to be given any opportunity to earn your support. The cleansing of Harrowstone is a long-overdue, daunting task. However, it will be a great step towards relieving the stress that falls upon Ravensgro- perhaps the only step needed."
