You know, the first thing I though about was the divination specialist variant written by Giant a long while ago. I'm not sure if or where it is available right now, but there were flavorful options for shoving dark secrets into someone's mind to make then foam up. Remember kids, omniscience is a dangerous thing to desire.

Quite liked the comic a couple days back (3078)-- had kind of a 'classic QC' feel to it, which is always nice.

I also figured that it would be a very impressive USB drive to do that. Especially just to have it on a key chain.

As described it wasn't just a USB - it could've been a SIM card, a bit of encryption technobabble and a USB interface. Maybe it was a tad smaller than it could be achieved in our world, but on the other hand, we haven't the level of tech seen in QC. You could have a dedicated sim card that only connects to one place, encrypts communications, and then interfaces with your computer with a USB. I've used mobile internet dongles that weren't much bigger than that.

And even aside from any technological implausibility, it would require several remarkably horrible design decisions for an AI to end up with a hardware interface capable of writing directly to memory without its consent.

Eh, since that hardware probably contains some software it's not impossible it could also contain some kind of super advanced hacking algorithm ignoring Pintsize' defenses. I mean, yeah, what Claire delivered was quite a bit of technobabble, especially the quantum tunnel bit, but in theory... I guess I could see it work.

(looks up 'brimping'. goes "say what?")

(already knows what coprolites are, but looks them up just to be sure. thinks Hanner's Dad WOULD like them. wonders if Hanners is going to buy or sell them on eBay...)

(wonders about the cat food, and cowboy boners.)

(decides NOT to look up cholesteatoma, because Man can only take so much. plans to go to bed early instead, this daylight savings time is messing me up.)

Sometimes I guess google safe search is helpful... I better not ask why brimping is even a thing.

Also: I guess hanner's dad would disagree (maybe) but there are things I'd rather want for Christmas.

Finally: I wonder if the last point has anything to do with Brokeback Mountain or some such... or maybe they are just important in a general sense.

    Hanners knows herself very well.

But now I have to wonder what exactly her drunken self was trying to tell her sober self. The 'apologize to Faye' bit is understandable. So might be the coprolites. But everything else, especially the cowboy boners?

    Maybe Winslow can explain.

To be fair, stumbling across the photos of it on Google Image Search and stumbling across a very low-detail diagram with labels such as "Uh Oh" and "OH NO" are two very different things. Also, Google Image Search doesn't have Hanners for comic relief.

I had one of those removed when I was 4. It really sucks. Complete hearing loss from one side, many hearing aids are not adapted for it (not that I really need one since my other ear works just fine), I have periodic appointments with a specialist and must be careful not to put water in my ear. I hope it goes better for him.

On the plus side, I now have a handy drawing to explain to people exactly how I'm not-so-hearing-impaired.

I think y'all are asking the wrong question. You shouldn't be asking "why cowboy boners," but "why NOT cowboy boners?".And brimping's a thing for fairly obvious reasons.

    In general:
There are bilions of people around the globe and we are both inventive and rather diverse. In essence: if it's remotly possible [1], it is a thing for some people and at least explored by even more. How widespread this idea is, is an entirely different matter and hard to estimate.

[1] Obviously the impossibility of some arrangements or activities doesn't discourage people from finding entirely fantastical situations engaging.

    In particular: what SaintRidley said.
