Default Savage Species Ogre and Troll

I'd it possible using savage species role for the troll and default ogre to be playable and not a severe detriment to the rest of a standard party? I'm talking the actualkmster classss and not the bloodlines.

Savage Species sticks to the Monster Manuel version of the races. So your real question is "Did WotC nerf Ogre/Troll to below playable races?". The answer is yes.

But your followup question would be what would be needed to make them playable/how far off are they.

Trolls have the health of a Fighter half their level and get roughly 1 interesting thing every 2 levels. If your party includes a Fighter, then merely give the Troll a HD every level rather than every other level. Ogres are in a similar situation(less health than Fighter, 1 interesting thing per 2 levels). Now if your party avoids Fighter for being too weak/boring then you would be better off cutting Troll and Ogre in half but keeping all the Special column.

Do you think ditching the dead levels through no HD would be too powerful?

As I said, it depends on what the other characters are. Is a single classed Fighter viable at your table? If so then add HD to the no HD levels. If not, then ditch the no HD levels but keep the specials.

PF has you treat the creatures CR as their 'Level' so a troll would count as a level five from SS. That might be fairly more balanced. Even allows buy off to half their CR rounded down.
