    • Kyeudo's warstrider fix.
    • Extra Ox body techniques(or equivalent charm) equal to Stamina/Essence
    • Pete Schaefer on Lunar Character Generation
    • Extra Excellencies. Generally, Solars/Abyssals get 5, Lunars get two, Sidereals 4, and Dragonblooded are 3, spread amoung caste and favored. Infernals get their caste Yozi's first Excellency free, including all future purchases of it.

    Ok, what do you all think of this character concept:

    Solar Twilight Cat Girl whose best Ability is Craft, worked all her life on blacksmithing to the point where she was making fancy but functional weapons for royalty through deals with the Guild, and pretty much became so good that the Guild boasted that she is the best blacksmith in the world. Then a DB craft guy shows up, challenges her to make the greatest sword she ever did, and soon she does so, and shows it at this big event....and it turns out the DB Craft guy sabotaged it in secret to try and "teach her the mortals place" and she figured it out, and exalted when she picked up the ruined blade and started beating the hell out of him until he died, then grabbed his red jade armor and her ruined sword and reforged them together into a red jade hammer and then set out to changed the world.

    I am certain I've got the Solar thing down this time, and I'm thinking this will be the character I play when 3e comes out.

    Eclipse can use anything, but the mote cost is higher. Raz could always make an Oricalcum weapon and fluff the red jade as being ornamental

    My memories a bit fuzzy, but I think its that the specific types of jade attune as if they were the more generic jade to other exalts (so for a solar, blue, red, and green jade are all the same thing). The exception being Infernals with Vitriolic colored jade, since vitriolic artifacts function for Infernals regardless of base material.

    Yes, but the questions is, what is "the story" here? Are we talking about the story about individual characters that gets played out at the table, or the story of the world that is told in the written books? Comparing either of those to the form of a traditional novel isn't entirely uncomplicated.

    My point here is that I think the importance put on authorial in the books are stronger than in a normal novels, because the content is at least partly instructional. The aim of the text is to give you guidelines for what kinds of things is appropriate in the world of Creation, and to do that, we are prepared to ask what the authors had in mind. We give credence to it. If, after that, we decide that what the author intended was dumb, we change it when we play our own games, but we still want to find out what the author was thinking before we cut it out.

    There's a reason Raziere struggles so much when he tries to merge his idea of Solars with the books' description of them. There's a reason Rules As Intended (RAI) is a term used in RPG discussions. There's a reason, as you point out, that RPGs routinely tell their players that they don't have to follow the rules if they don't want to. When reading a novel, we don't think in these terms. There's clearly a higher importance put on authorial intent here.

    in 2E, Any Exalt can use any artifact, but their normal material works best because it's cheaper to attune to.

    in 3E... Solars are supposedly equally proficient with all Magical Materials.(Primarily because they're the default PC splat, so they want PCs to not be punished for wanting more versatility.)

    Since Raziere wants to play it when 3E comes out, I think it's fine

    Solars are supposed to be the best at using Evocations in general. But I imagine "not punishing players for using artifacts from their only semi-reliable source" a part as well.

    No. Solars explicitly use all Itmes equally well instead of having a preferance for Orichalk. Check What We Know.

    So what Splat works best when you give it Orichalk(Other than Orichalkum Caste Alchemicals, obviously?)

    As for :"I Only solars use Orichalk" um... that's never been the case. It's always any splat could use any material, it's just some materials work better with certain splats.

    I don't see why they would make it ike that now.

    Might it not just be that only Solars can get to the top tier of Evocations with Orichalcum? Meaning that even if they are equally good with all of them they have a relative advantage with the magical material that is the same color of shiny?

    You can attune to it without materials benefits for normal cost, or force harmonized attunement for double the cost, pending the results of a Wits + Lore roll to do so. If you succeed, you get to use it as described. If not, the Essence explosion will harm you and shatter any hearthstones set in the item. This used to be significant, until someone decided that there should be a cheap magitech artifact that entirely bypasses this system for only one or two extra motes. And so I learned to curse the Fivefold Harmonic Adapter, for being a total tension-killer.

    Having symmetry can lead to cool things. For instance, alchemicals having powers somewhat related to the powers of the exalts whose magical material they are made of is interesting. Having all solars use shiny, golden weapons because shiny golden weapons are somehow better for them is silly. Having solars use shiny, golden weapons because solar powers create shiny golden apparitions and more efficiently create shiny-golden-material than glowy-silver-material, deathly-dark-stuff or mostly-not-there-star-stuff can be interesting.

    [edit]To continue that line of thinking, Dragon Blooded use Jade because it is the most common magical material by several orders of magnitude. Abyssals use Soulsteel because the things needed to make it are right there in the underworld.

    I honestly cannot think of a good reason for Sidereals or Lunars to use their magical material that isn't already taken. Any thoughts?

    I can't remember what Moonsilver is made of, but Starmetal seems to fit the same reasoning as Soulsteel - Heaven has gods, it has those who sentence gods, and it has the means to track their remains.

    I could have sworn that "Starmetal is Soulsteel made from gods instead of mortals" was an actively persecuted meme. In other words, all the writers are on board with getting it stamped out. That said, presumably if Starmetal is made from stars that fall, who better to find fallen stars than people who actively use the stars every day.

    Starmetal is Soulsteel made from gods instead of mortals and the writers can never convince me otherwise.
    Jade may be soulsteel made of elementals. Not sure if that would be fun.

    Moonsilver is made out of Silver+Wyld+alchemy, like Orichalcum. Thus, it's right there where Lunars are now.

    I wouldn't know - I haven't read much more than the MoEPs.

    I'm fairly certain the MoEP explicitly says starmetal is made from the corpses of dead gods... and frankly if the devs want to change that well I will nod to the "death of the author" argument that arose from the last thread. Because to me, starmetal is easily the most badass magical material in Exalted.

    Yeah - in one of the Books of Sorcery (probably Wonders), there's a line that goes "everything used to work on starmetal must be blessed. Everything. The gods will take any chance to refuse to mess with their dead kin". Except it's a bit more detailed than that, I forget the specifics so I paraphrased.
