Yeah, it's a surprise. She has been walked all over by Ardon to the point of self-destruction; and this is the point where she breaks?

After all, she could have remained loyal to Ardon and rightfully keep her paladin status. For how long would have been a different matter, but apparently, she didn't lose it when Ardon ordered her to not intervene when the people in the streets were slaughtered.

I think she just broke her oath as Ardon was obviously going commit evil acts and she couldn't exactly do that and be a paladin either. So its one of those situations where the GM decides you'd fall or not.

However, I don't think a paladin should fall for simply not intervening if they believe it serves some kind of higher purpose that will save even more lives.

But, I don't think we should discuss that as it gets into the age old morality discussion of paladins (regardless of the edition) and that takes us nowhere good.

Instead, I'm fascinated how this comic managed to turn not only one but two main characters into the main villains of the comic. Normally, these comics focus on some kind of outside threat but here we are crossing the lines between protagonist and antagonist frequently it seems. Its a story structure I can't recall seeing before.

I don't know that she has necessarily fallen. The sword bonus is given based on the level of conviction the wielder feels. I think it's more likely that she's just over all the nonsense than actually fallen.

Its possible that the sword simply rejected her since she broke the oath (as she swore it by that sword) rather than she outright fell.

IIRC wasn't it established that she doesn't purely work based on good/bad and is more loyalty focused and that works too for a pala in that setting?

It more looks like she willingly powered-down the sword, rather then the sword rejecting her or her falling without knowing. Most likely she's just able to control if the sword is in "avenger prime" mode or "hunk of metal" mode. So she powered-down the sword to show she was done fighting and is probably about to just walk away and let the two megalomaniacs argue.

You don't dramatically pull out your sword, look at it for a moment, and then lift it up into the air for it "Rejecting you". that was 100% intentional on Ell's part.

4th edition Paladins don't fall, IIRC. Their alignment matches their deity, and isn't automatically LG, as well.

Ell's Paldiness was defined by her loyalty to the party, including both Ardon and Fortyfive. She has now found herself in a situation were she can't be loyal to either of them let alone both.

Much of his character development over the comic is about how he's A: not as smart as he thinks he is and B: some form of hypocrite.

Ya know, now that I think about it, Fortyfive's chances of winning might not be zero like I had thought earlier. After all, how long has the Chekhov's Gun of the Nightmare spirit escaping should Ardon lose consciousness been waiting around? And if it does get out it would be REALLY anti-climatic if it turns out it can't possess constructs like Fortyfive.

Though no matter what the outcome of this fight is Ell, Peanut, and Chandea will still have a construct army to deal at some point or another. As far that goes this fight just determines if said army will be lead by Fortyfive, Ardon, or the Nightmare spirit. I suppose if Ardon wins the army's objective will be different than "kill all organic life", but I am pretty sure it would still be bad for everyone besides Ardon.

Actually I think that is a really cool sliding scale of good people in this comic. As time goes on the slowly begin going away....

I think he does. I sort of remember something like that, but I can't recall when or where he got it.
