Re: Bink's Wrath of the Righteous: The Worldwound Incursion
As the group draws nearer to the massive spider, Waylan abruptly lowers his bow and some of the tension goes out of his shoulders. "It's dead. Go ahead and see!" he announces. As those at the front of the group inspect the corpse, he wonders aloud, "How do you suppose it died? Something to do with the cave-in?"

Visibly relaxing, though keeping the lucern hammer in her hand, Aurora responds.
"Possibly. Or something killed it. Either way, its struggles are over while ours are just beginning. Let us begin our ascent."
Motioning to Hargus and Anevia, she leads them towards the NE exit.

"That's a good question. Seems like something subtle if you're the only one that noticed it though... I'm pretty sure I can figure it out if you give me a minute here." Re: Bink's Wrath of the Righteous: The Worldwound Incursion
"It is a good thing the spider is dead - with all the noise it would have known we were here long before we knew it was. You all are going to have to stop talking. Whisper if you must, but unless you want Morevek and me to walk into a prepared ambush you must be quiet!" Filburn says in a sharp, low voice. He turns from the spider and begins to creep forward to the northeast, stepping carefully on the stony floor and trying to quiet his movements in spite of any further noise from the rag-tag group behind him.

Re: Bink's Wrath of the Righteous: The Worldwound Incursion
Surprise round
The good news is that the spider is well and truly dead. The bad news, is that whatever killed the beast laid its eggs inside. As Filburn and Thyxius approach it to investigate, three huge, bulbous maggots veritably burst from the spider's mostly-digested belly.
The nearer two disgusting vermin lunge for the bard and investigator with sickeningly moist mandibles. The final maggot squelches around its companions, towards Filburn.

Re: Bink's Wrath of the Righteous: The Worldwound Incursion
The heroes prove to great a foe for the quivering vermin. In a matter of moments, the party recovers their poise, dashes into efficient combat, and pulverizes the trio of grubs. Moving on past the squashed obstructions, the party carefully makes their way through the tunnels.
Horgus all-but vomits as he passes the maggots- clearly unused to the more gruesome aspects of adventuring. "You all must be using your eyes more than your ears. What was it you just dispatched?" Aravashnial calls out from beside Anevia, who looks almost disappointed as she lowers her bow. "Woah. Uhh... maggots, Aravashnial. Big ones."
End of Combat
***********
The winding passage widens into something between a wide hallway and small cavern, some distance past the deceased maggots- it is difficult to tell, traveling underground. As you carefully pass through the area- wary of potential dangers in the larger space, Anevia lets out a brief shout of surprise.
"Look, up there!" Pointing to a space about 20 feet up the wall, a knapsack hangs, suspended by its strap, from a small rocky protrusion. It must have fallen from the battle above, but here as well as elsewhere, that rift has sealed.

Re: Bink's Wrath of the Righteous: The Worldwound Incursion
Looking perplexed at how they found a such an item with no other evidence of the ground opening up like the cave in they had landed beside, Thyxius is nevertheless excited by the find. He looks at the stone wall to see if he might be able to climb the necessary height to retrieve the item despite his meager strength. If he doesn't think he is able, he looks for some loose stone he may be able to pitch up at the rock holding the strap to knock the bag free while his allies discuss the discovery. While he searches, he offers, "Desna, or perhaps Iomedae given our current company, might be offering us a small reprieve here."

Re: Bink's Wrath of the Righteous: The Worldwound Incursion
After retrieving his arrow (and mending it of any damage), Waylan nocks it again and resumes his position as the rearguard, straining his eyes in the dim glow of his buckler to make out any more foes.
"Indeed, I was just thinking that." Waylan nods. Pulling the scale out of his pocket, he studies its shiny, faceted surface for a moment for closing his eyes and gently touching it to his forehead. At first, nothing happens, but a moment later the man starts to slowly float up towards the cavern's ceiling, as if drawn up by invisible ropes. A small plume of mist and cloud takes form below Waylan's feet, and it grows in size and seems to be buoying the man upwards as he ascends. As he reaches the halfway point to the ceiling, already well above his companion's heads, Kestros comes flying by in a lazy arc around him, and he feels a burst of amusement from the hawk at seeing its master joining him in the sky, in however ungainly a fashion.
Once the pack is retrieved, the clouds beneath Waylan seems to reverse their motion, dwindling and drawing in on themselves as they slowly lower him to the ground, before disappearing entirely. "Well, let us see what reprieve providence has granted" he announces before opening the bag.Spoiler: Active characters

Re: Bink's Wrath of the Righteous: The Worldwound Incursion
Horgus takes a brief sip of the waterskin, before passing it back to Aurora, with a somewhat perplexed expression. "Err.. Thank you," he mumbles.
The power of Terendelev's scale effortlessly raises the man to where the satchel waits. As Waylan settles back onto the ground, he notes the craftsmanship of the bag itself- it's straps are well padded, and the storage compartments are well balanced and supported by a few stiff rods of what must be wood or bone, that would enable the bag to rest more comfortably on the back of whoever wears it. He opens the main compartment and finds:
Spoiler: Loot:The backpack is masterwork.
In it, you find 10 days worth of trail rations, filnt and steel, one set of caltrops, two flasks of oil, a bundle of 12 arrows, and two potions.
As the items are brought out, and the party (excepting Aravashnial) sees them, a sudden low rumble sounds from the back of the group. Looking ever-so-slightly abashed, Horgus shrugs. "I never had a chance to get at those barkers before all hell broke loose. Literally, I suppose. We'll need those rations, if we're down here for long.... and I'd be happy for one right now." He gently presses past the wounded party members to retrieve one of the 10, unwraps it and ravenously devours the hard bread and salted meat within.
Anevia breathes in suddenly at the sight of the arrows. "Waylan, if you've got plenty, I could make good use of those... Only 4 of my own survived the fall." Still ungainly on her injured leg, she makes no effort to approach and retrieve them on her own, but her expression is hopeful.
****************************
Moving onward in the tunnels, it isn't long at all before you reach a "T" intersection. There is no discernible distinction between the two directions; the faint sound of dripping water from somewhere and settling rocks echoes about in all directions.

"This is fine work, indeed..." Waylan announces as he turns the bag over in his hands. "It seems to me one could carry a heavy load with less effort, using this. Who would care for it?"
Waylan nods and wordlessly passes the almost-full quiver to her, helping her to transfer the arrows into her own quiver while being mindful of her injured leg. "All yours..." he says as he works. "but remember you've been hurt - don't overdo it."

Re: Bink's Wrath of the Righteous: The Worldwound Incursion
Aravashnial stirs from his mostly-silent moping. "Hmm? What?" As Aurora guides his hands to the potions, he nods in realization. "Let's see here...." The elf takes some time- longer than the few seconds it would normally take- sniffing and touching the insides of both jars. After a minute or so, he stoppers them back up, and hands them near Aurora, though not really to her. "This one-" he raises his left hand- "if a simple curative draught. Not tremendously effective, but better than nothing. Many clerics begin their training crafting such potions. This one, however, is a little more advanced. It restores a measure of health to the imbiber, beyond simple pain and fractures."

"If possible, I'd like to have both the pack and its contents, aside from the potions. Even travelling as lightly as I am, I'm afraid my equipment is weighing me down a fair bit." Thyxius offers a hand to take the pack before continuing, "Besides, I only fight with one hand, I'd be most able to use that bag of caltrops in a pinch if we need it."
With a firm nod and a serious look, Thyxius agrees with Aurora. "If it does lead back to where we came from, we'll either run into nothing, more survivors, or something dangerous. If it's the first, we'll just have spent a few minutes. If it's the second, we'll prove more difficult a group to assail for it, increasing our odds, as well as helping another soul in need." He adds the last bit hastily to make it known he's not just thinking of tactical ramifications in this situation. He concludes, "Finally, if it's the last, better for us to deal with whatever it is on our terms rather than have it ambush us from behind later."Yves Talbot, bard extraordinaire, avatar by Ishmi and the King's Men on Facebook.

The party moves onward, struggling to keep their sense of direction in the oppressive darkness.
"Ow! **** damnit!" Horgus cries out in a hiss. "Can we get any better light in here? I'm bound to die on some unseen pitfall at this rate!" The aristocrat lifts himself off the door, brushing his clothes in a futile effort to remove the grime.

Playing his complaint out, Thyxius produces a torch from his pack and offers it to Horgus. "Would you care to? We could have our friend cast another light spell on this if you'd prefer to be the one controlling the light source, or we could light it if you prefer the flame."
The evidence of habitation makes the tiefling turn several shades lighter. He chooses now to reveal what he knew about these caverns. "I'm afraid I was withholding some information. In my defense, it seemed like hogwash and impertinent before now. We may not be the only... sentients down here. There are tales that have circulated for decades that a group of survivors of some foul demonic experimentations were banished to a set of underground caves below Kenabres, and that the entrance to this network of caverns lay just outside the city proper. Even if the stories were true, it seemed... unlikely that any of that group would have survived this long down here. It seems I was mistaken. I'm sorry for not sharing this sooner. I realize now that this could very well have been a dangerous encounter with whatever left this camp behind."
As if to divert attention away from his blunder, Thyxius begins to toe at the equipment to see if there is anything salvageable from the mess as he averts his eyes from anyone that looks disapproving of him, especially Aurora.

Re: Bink's Wrath of the Righteous: The Worldwound Incursion
From his point in front, Filburn scowls back in frustration at the continued noise before deliberately moving further into the lead, trying to outdistance the near-constant noise coming from the less stealthy members of the party and especially the complaining nobleman.
At the discovery of the campsite he grows obviously concerned, staring incredulously at Thyxius as the tiefling speaks. Shaking his head in frustration, the armored man returns to the hallway, watching both directions intently. "I don't like how loud we are, how we don't know what we will find down here, and how people aren't sharing what they know that could matter..." he mumbles, loudly enough to be heard by anyone near him as his eyes flick back and forth into the shadowy tunnels.

"As far as the lack of sharing of information, I do not think it was intentional. People tell such stories all the time, and the last thing we need is to be jumping at our own shadow down here believing an untrue rumor. However, with Waylan's assessment, it seems there is some truth to them."
Nodding forward "We'll wait for Filburn and Morevek to get a little further in front of us before setting out"

Re: Bink's Wrath of the Righteous: The Worldwound Incursion
Horgus accepts the torch, with an expression of unguarded skepticism. When it is lit, at the part moves onward, there is a sudden silence only noticeable by the fact that Horgus isn't constantly muttering under his breath. It's an oddly relieving experience.
"Horgus, are you alright?" Aravashnial whispers. His ears picked up on the change, as well.
A belated "uh... Yes, I think. Yes, I am," follows from the noble. Surprisingly, the flickering torchlight seems to lighten the mood all-around. Or maybe that's just Horgus' lack of grumbling.
