Star Power V: The Final Yawntier
Welcome to the fifth thread discussing Star Power!
Noted Snarker Mewtarthio describes Star Power as follows:
SpoilerWhat is Star Power, you ask? Shut up! I'm the one asking the questions here!
Now, would you like me to tell you about Star Power? Star Power is a collaborative effort between Michael "Mookie" Terracciano and Garth "Delectable Eye-Organ Fruits" Graham. According to the website, it merges the majesty of hard sci-fi with the wonder of the Silver Age. If you have no idea how anyone could reconcile such disparate elements, don't worry: Neither do Garth and Mookie.
At our current juncture, our hero ("Space Luna""Danica Maris") is partaking in a Raiders of the Lost Parody in which an assortment of supporting characters ("The Scoobies") is providing color commentary. Sadly, we were not able to come up with a sufficiently catchy Indiana Jones-themed title for this thread, but we must go forth into that undiscovered country all the same

Re: Star Power V: The Final Yawntier
Dang, and my new nickname for the evil starpower will remain buried forever. Mainly because its not as funny if I have to write it out again. /pout

Re: Star Power V: The Final Yawntier
By now, I don't think the genre they're doing is silver age comics + hard sci-fi.
its just normal space opera but with a silver lantern. they just think that mass effect is somehow hard sci-fi and that silver age somehow means just being morally upright.
when really, hard sci-fi is about really making sure your doing your homework, while silver age is all about deliberately not doing any homework at all and throwing yourself through a window, shattering the glass to go have fun on the playground in the most insane way you can imagine throwing away any pretense at plausibility to do whatever plot you want, logic and sense be damned.
its like trying to build a castle made of ice while using its fireplace to heat it so that you can live in it comfortably. you just going to end up with water.

Re: Star Power V: The Final Yawntier
To be fair, did anyone ever really expect Mookie, the man who somehow built an entire fictional universe on Unfortunate Implications, to do "hard sci-fi"? He's not even capable of (or if he is, he's never shown a willingness to) thinking through his characters' motivations to their logical conclusions, let alone thinking through the consequences of hard sci-fi advances. He thinks genre conventions exist because they're inherently good and should be included just because, leading to many colorful examples of his infamous "Cargo Cult Writing." No, of course Star Power isn't "hard sci-fi," but anyone who ever expected it to be that probably never read Dominic Deegan.
As far as the update goes . . . it's just filler. Technically, it's sorta advancing the plot, but it's doing so in a way that surprises absolutely no one, and therefore it didn't need an entire page to itself. So it goes.In the Beginning Was the Word, and the Word Was Suck: A Guide to Truenamers

I really like the first panel -- it makes use of light & shadow in a way that is distinct from the usual "flat" illumination Garth uses.
I'm amused that nobody has flashlights, so the Scoobies are walking around with their guns drawn to light the way. This is problematicLead Designer for Oracle Hunter GamesToday a Blog, Tomorrow a Business!

Oh my god really? That had to be the worst pose ever in that last panel. Also, yeah, werent you coming here specifically to find another star power danica? Does it really surprise you so much to see another ai there?

Re: Star Power V: The Final Yawntier
So what is the general consensus on how this will turn out? Im thinking wolf in sheeps clothing. Its a corrupted or evil ai that will play nice till it can sink its hooks in someone. The writings on the wall may be warnings that will get disregarded, or not so much warnings like "OMG! Dont touch the glowy thing! Its evil!" As a story that sends up warning flags about its intent and what it caused to happen here or some such thing. Thats why mitch had his memory of the area erased, otherwise he would have figured out what happened and warned her against coming here.

It's pages like today that cause me to mourn the loss of the Slayers of yesteryear!
Imagine, if you will, Second Mitch being replaced with Stunt's Head? And perhaps we could work Science Titan into some pages?

Re: Star Power V: The Final Yawntier
I don't like this new policy of hints in the art. I want people to spell everything out for me in several panels. Then I now what is going on and can complain it was spelled out.
(I really didn't see that until Hopeless mentioned it)

I'm pleased by the transformation joke. It adds to continuity and hasn't been done to death.Lead Designer for Oracle Hunter GamesToday a Blog, Tomorrow a Business!

Re: Star Power V: The Final Yawntier
I'm kind of afaid to say this but... I don't feel like complaining about the new update. I mean, yeah, there have been transformation jaokes before but as they go, this one is decent and otherwise... well, not much happens. But, it's an OK page.

Re: Star Power V: The Final Yawntier
Wait, wasn't she facing the chozo statues last comic?
And Mitch, are you dropping the pretense and are just straight up are trying to kill her, rather than just withholding crucial information by being needlessly cryptic?

This has likely been the best start for an issue/arc so far. Let's see how it rolls.

Re: Star Power V: The Final Yawntier
There are sillier webncomics than this on the web.
http://www.spinnyverse.com/
Superheroes fighting invasive species? Yeah, they're having a laugh, but still.
There are webcomics that haven't updated in years.
http://quillianonline.com/
First time I saw it I thought that might be an interesting story, but it hasn't updated from that page in ?five? years. The end of what Son? The story? There is no end. There's just the point where the storytellers stop talking.

Re: Star Power V: The Final Yawntier
For reasons I can't remember, I hold Spinnerette for a webcomic uncapable of holding my attention and therefore unworthy of my time.
I'm taking a look at the other one.Originally Posted by J.R.R. Tolkien, 1955

Re: Star Power V: The Final Yawntier
Am I understanding the quip underneath the comic right & are the golems calling her a liar because despite all her posturing, she got the translation wrong? Or is it cause she's not "Karuliz"?
If it's the first ... just no.

Re: Star Power V: The Final Yawntier
Looks like Mookie is paraphrasing prayers.
Anyway, so far, so good. I am pretty sure the "liar" thing is about the name. She isn't Bill Kaulitz, after all.
Pity for the RSS feeds spoilering things. The title says too much.Originally Posted by J.R.R. Tolkien, 1955

Re: Star Power V: The Final Yawntier
I can't even see today's strip, for some reason. The whole site just won't load on my phone, and on my computer, I can see the title header, the Kickstarter banner, and the Twitter bar, but no comic and no newspost. Judging from the sounds of it, this isn't a problem for anyone else? Bizarre.
