Wow, they got smarter. But it's funny how all sapient beings around a member of the Chief Race start doing stupidities until the Chief tells them otherwise.

Heh, now im getting this mental image of finding out the countess has woken up about a dozen times and broken her restraints only to get gassed again. They just cant seem to manage to find a way to contain her while staying within galactic empire prisoner standards. Or at least to keep her asleep till she actually heals.

This gave me Titan AE flashbacks!

Oh intelligent guards never expected that!

Of course she's probably immune to the gas and will promptly get up and break out whilst they're waiting for the Psi-Cops or they're actually Void Angels come to rescue her...

Yes its got to the stage where I'm wondering what they're going to pull next!

Hah, that would be pretty damn funny. It's my head canon now, anyway.

Well, so there exist competent people in this universe. Now if the writer also was competent...
Maybe the sudden burst of intelligence lasts and Countess' escape will be somewhat believable?

I'm torn about this page. On the one hand, it's a little bit refreshing to see someone with a glimmer of competence in this universe. On the other hand, it's so incredibly like Mookie to throw in this "twisty cliffhanger" on the last page of the last issue, and then to have him torpedo it on the very first page of the new issue. I won't say I'm disappointed that we won't necessarily see the Countess again (she wasn't a very interesting villain, and that's doubly true when she doesn't have her massive robot army), at least in the context that the last issue kind of hinted, but it really throws Mookie's cheap dramatic tricks into a harsh light, revealing them for the cheap tricks they are.

Which I guess is nothing new. But it's what we've got.

Plus he comes off as just so proud of the twist. Or is that, proud of the guards who did exactly what he wanted them to do and so wrote their dialogue that way. That being said, its actually pretty uniform across the board for him. The galactic defense people have been pretty on the ball when it comes to their jobs. Yeah Bill broke free, but lets face it, it took a secret ai ship to pull it off that bill had managed to keep secret for all this time until just NOW he decided to indulge his EEEEEVUUULZZ and waste time beating guards to death and comas instead of escaping. But in general, the galactic crews are good at their jobs. Its the bad guys who tend to suck. Even the supernova dragon lords ambush wasnt so much a galactic fail as it was a freaking overwhelming attack with massive number and gear superiority that was totally unexpected.

Good writer: The guards are smart and the safety protocols are good, but the villain somehow outsmarts them, forcing the heroes to chase and capture him again.

Lazy writer: The guards are stupid and the villain escapes easily, forcing the heroes to capture him again.

Writer with no idea what he is doing: The guards are smart and manage to prevent escape, leaving the hero to do something completely different, and making the entire scene pointless.

    Also, update.

I'm guessing that sequence was meant as foreshadowing - there's something weird going on (getting the key caused her to wake up, despite being in an entirely different star system), and the guards just notified the Shadowy Government OrganizationTM.

"In the room the women come and go/talking about Michelangelo." "Do you know what it means?" "It means Eliot didn't know much about women".

Sorry that I don't remember where this quote comes from. Anyway, in the last strip we have a nice callback to Michelangelo's Creation of Man in the Sistine Chapel. Frescoes really are water-based paint; because of this, they must be made quickly. That's why we often have very complete preparatory boards. Leonardo liked to paint slowly and to make a lot of adjustments to what he was doing, so he tried using a oil-based paint for his Last Supper in Milan. The result looked awesome, but begun deteriorating very quickly and Leonardo himself had to make the first restoration. The Supper probably looked even more impressive because of the gleam given by oil-based paint.

Sorry for the little art history lesson. Not much to say about the last pages.

And so we get even more foreshadowing of what will happen to the 4 eyed history buff. She is clearly getting more and more desperate to be able to help (meaning solve the mystery) I really am starting to become convinced that she will take the corrupted star power, though it may not be visibly corrupted at first, in an attempt to help more, which elads us to the eventually evil star power through the slippery slope effect. Or, because its mookie, "/snap RAWR! I R EVIL SUDDENLY! What a tweest!"

But an evil Starpower would be a cool thing, if only because it would actually challenge Danica. It might not be very new, but I approve of the idea.

These are the moments in which you start wondering what machinations Mookie's plotting. Whatever may happen later, we now again know we have no idea of what he'll pull out next. The thrill!

I kind of liked it, but I keep finding it odd that basically every character that has no direct connection to the main plot is more interesting.

A more competent webcomic might note that certain traits are oddly universal -- a "first contact" specialist from an interstellar empire might very well see Superior Alien Race Syndrome all the time

No, the reason I'm not chatty is because this looks like another Neverending Vacation Arc in which Mookie indulges in World Bungling that neither advances nor serves the plot. At first it might seem like all these threads are going to be tied together in some massive plot point but the actual result is less than compelling

So I'm reserving judgment until I see something actually happening. I expect that to be in another 5 issues

Yeah, broadly speaking Mookie is just not very good at doing world building in an interesting way. It's a hard thing to do and it's probably the weakest part of his writing. Oddly, I don't think he agrees with this assessment, which is why he never gets any better at it and is unlikely to in the future. He's such a weird artist in that regard, there are few I know at any level of fame who are ever happy with what they do in the same way he is.

Ugh, why do I get the feeling that this is going to be a rant/exposition on her species and/or goals given out for no reason other than the flimsy justification of, "Oh, so humans are violent? Lets hear them understand THIS!"

Probably, but none of them were allowed to join the federation. Im pretty sure the implication is that while other races had their own wars and such, it was sufficiently ancient history that it wasnt a part of their culture long before the federation showed up to give them an invite. Meanwhile humans were still struggling to rise above that sort of behavior and unify when first contact happened.

That still seems stupidly unlikely. To me it's just Mookie to spread this "Humans are terrible" story over and over and over. Also, "humans are special". Well, unless it's just our "hat" in this universe. But violence doesn't seem such a predominant trait among our main humans.

So... also, tropical island, yay. I guess we will meet the tentacle monster?
