League of Allied Provinces of Ambrose, Nand and Krozna (King of Nand)
    Round 22 | 142-143

    News and Rumours
    • The invasion of Kalamahar so soon after the treaty of Ember City cannot be borne. The king leads the League's army north to defend their Berrium allies.
    • The king has had a leading scholar mutilated, his tongue, nose and ears severed, after referring to the king as the "first of the Farban dynasty to rule all of Nand" rather than as a member of the Sasan dynasty. It is said that only the intervention of the ageing Prince Kusal, at the cost of much personal and political capital, saved the scholar from death.
    • Suggesting that the king is not the legitimate son of Isfandir IV is now considered high treason. So far only one man has been executed under the new law, one who denied he had ever said such a thing - an officer in the royal guard rumoured to be the king's true father.
    • It is rumoured that the rebels in Andanand produced by the search for Francesca are affiliated to the young man his followers call the Maseh.
    • The king is said to be furious with his concubines for failing to provide an heir. Rumours go around that unless one is conceived imminently he will have them all executed and replaced.
    • A low but persistent rumour maintains the king, for all his undoubted intelligence and bravery, is mad.
    • The Maseh's name has been discovered to be Adal-ashagamir. More followers are said to flock to his side every day, and many of them believe him to be the rightful king.
    • The king himself is said not to believe that one of the siyanda could have been born after so long. In any case, he maintains, he is the rightful king as the son of Isfandir IV and will not surrender his throne to rebels.
    • Some say the king plans to marry his half-sister Helaine of Avonlea to beget a child of "pure blood". Some go further, and whisper he has already taken her to bed.
    • Captain Bedrich has been detailed to defend Andanand against the open rebellion, but many suspect the absence of the king will cause Adal-ashagamir and his followers to grow bolder. Some fear this; others welcome it.

      Subactions:
Attend the Conclave of Eastern Faith
      Attend the Tournament in Primus

    Spoiler: News and Rumors
    Show

    • The Lady of Emeralds never makes it to the Spring Courts. Somewhere along the journey the ship is turned back around and Lilia is released from her imprisonment without any explanation on Zellevera's part. Lilia refuses to speak on the matter.
    • The defeat of the iron gauntlet is met neutrally by the Dynasty of Escaye. They have had little to do overall with the witch hunt that occupied over half the known world.
    • Zellevera meets with Lady Kisu and expresses her sympathies towards her situation; Relating the experience of Arenhal with that of hers. She suggests that perhaps if Lord Summer was reminded that the people he conquered were more than just numbers on a chart that he might have the sympathy to return to her the land she had reigned over. ..However, she doubts that such will be the case due to the Aeldir perspective of superiority over mortals.
    • Construction on Heaven's gate continues, and is shown in the form of the Eastern part of the wall reaching out far into the bay. However, a simple wall in the sea is not all that is to be accomplished. Battlements are set upon the Western part of the wall, which had recently been completed. This same location is also the recipient of an experimental archway that is carved into it, said to be the host of some sort of complicated device used to raise or lower large gates of steel that is still being developed.
    • Zellevera is pleased by the amount of attendees at the Conclave of Eastern Faith, and guarantees the participants of the event that continued, unwavering faith will be rewarded richly. Other nations are encouraged to send missives to the Emerald division to discuss such benefits if they too wish to profit both spiritually and materially.
    • Kitlia of the Crystal Union, who was sent over to the Spring Courts several years ago is largely forgotten about by the new queen. However, the girl has found much success in her role and has continued to keep up her enthusiasm over the years that she initially had for being a part of Aeldir lands, and seems to express no plans to ever return to her homeland unless on vacation to see friends. She is also slightly bothered about how she was seemingly forgotten by the Union after Zellevera came to power - Not that she can do anything about it.

[Diplomacy - Host Event - The Majestic Tournament]:
    • Accept all gifts
    • Trade 458 (Primus) for 455 (Aeldir)

This has been delayed long enough. The Imperium prepares to hand the reins of 458's government over to the Aeldir and recieve Phelnius in exchange. The Aeldir are greeted happily by their new subjects; the new administrators are showered with gifts.

    • Wed Princess Riyle of Primus to Andarious Brynjolf of Nemeria

In the interest of soothing relations between the Imperium and the Prosperity Sphere, Riyle Primus, daughter of Varadia, is betrothed to Andarious Brynjolf of Nemeria.

    • Trade Castra Fortifications (Primus) for Mariner's Cuirass (Nemeria)
      Spoiler: Terms
      Show
-All current members of the Prosperity Sphere (Nemeria, the Exarchate, the Unicity) will be granted access to the Castra Fortifications tech

-The Kingdom of Berrium and Primus will be granted the Mariner's Cuirass tech

-If Berrium's holdings grow close enough to reasonably justify it, they will be allowed to trade for Yondervoed (this clause will be negated if they manage to get Wonderwood, as unlikely as that sounds)

-No party will trade the technologies without permission, outside of the stated parties.

    • Gift Repeating Crossbows to the Kingdom of Berrium

Numerous clerical errors have been discovered in the Kingdom of Berrium's records, and in doing so, Primus has discovered several trades that never went through. Berrium is gifted the technology to make Repeating Crossbows, as it seems to have been lost in the shuffle.
    • Gift Castra Fortifications to the Kingdom of Berrium

Specifically, several gifts were arranged for Berrium's government at the Exalted tournament, but the Kingdom never actually arrived, meaning that they never recieved the gifts. As such, Primus begins doing housekeeping in that regard.

[Military - War!]: The Imperial Legions march to war, fighting in 200's defense under the terms of the Treaty of Ember City, under the command of King Valerius.
    • 10 Land Units
    • Route: 191 - 190 - 189 - 199 - 200
    • Tech bonuses: Moonsilver Weapons (+1 against enemy armor), Thezirin Riding, (+1 land battles), Repeating Crossbows (+1 battle) (Castra doesn't apply here)
    • Allow all allied forces through my lands as necessary, in accordance with the Treaty of Ember City

[Military - Raise One Legion]: One Primal legion is raised from amongst the Imperium's territories, and sent to occupy Cochragio. The two that had been sent originally are called home. This legion will be the 1000 land troops that the Demense allowed as a replacement for 1000 ships.

[Curiosity 5 - Upgrade Resource - Primus (57, Moonsilver) from Good to Great]: Moonsilver mining is increased in preparation for new trade on the Crystal Rose trade route. While the exact purpose for this is unknown, it is speculated to be a part of a recent 'special project' of the Queen's.

[Curiosity - Modify Trade Route - Add Primus (57, Moonsilver) to Crystal Rose Trade Route]: As moonsilver begins to flow into the trade route, many shipments come directly to the capital city and even into the palace. Again, no one's entirely sure why, but it does seem to lend credence to the idea that Crudice is working on something big with those resources.

((Long Haul Caravans should make this possible))

    [Secret - Roll (6)]

    News and Rumors
-The Crystal Union never sent the Kingdom of Berrium the Bucklers technology they promised at the Exalted tournament. After some diplomatic correspondence, it's discovered that the designs were sent but never properly received. The Crystal Union's representatives are mortified, but Phelnia is patient with them. Mistakes happen, after all, and the Kingdom hasn't suffered any major losses that the bucklers would have prevented; all the Union needs to do is send it again (perhaps under heavier guard this time).

-The man from the moonlit tower (referred to as Tsukinjin by the Primal) is allowed to pass through Primus without incident. Apparently he was offered faster means of transport if he desired them, though it's unclear if he ever received or used them.

-To the possible surprise of the Doctrine, despite the clear strength of its adherents within Primus' borders, it is not granted official status, and the temple is warned not to attempt to convert their leaders as Daen did, if it wishes to remain in the Imperium's good graces.

-The Imperium maintains that individual worship and practice is tolerated within the Imperium and always has been. Where the Imperium stops tolerating faith is when it attempts to organize against the throne. Daen's stated goal in converting the Imperium was to turn it into a Daenic state, a fate worse than death judging from what happened to Avonlea after the removal of the Prophetess Council. The Doctrine is being granted greater leniency, given its ties to the current High Princess.

It is warned, however, that attempting to convert its leaders or turn the populace against them will not be tolerated. The Doctrine is no more important to the Imperium than the cult of Invictus, or the Honmyo, or the concept of reincarnation that some in Primus still hold. It will be granted no special privileges.

-To the very probable surprise of the Doctrine, especially given her origins, High Princess Crudice comes out publicly as a follower of the Old Gods of the Aeldir after the Majestic Tournament concludes.

"I have found value in the eight candles, but to Balor Morrig and the old gods, I offer my ninth."

-At the news of an assault on the Kingdom of Berrium's north holdings by the Suzerainty, Primus sends an envoy to Valerius, letting him know that the Imperium intends to prosecute this conflict, if Berrium wills it.

-House Animus had actually been planning to resume trade on the Grey Route, so the news that the Drieduch's merchants had come in of their own accord is met with a shrug.

-Agneta Palanka is welcomed to the Imperial Court. No one is sad to see the Nanda ambassador go.

[Permanent Cultural Identity 1: Imperial Order]: Fluff: The Primus Imperium - through guile and military might - is very adept at bringing new peoples into the fold. Their rapid expansion has made them extremely adept at making local populations see the benefits of being brought into the imperium, and the direct management of noble houses makes it an attractive proposition. After all, who better to manage one's lands than one who lives there?

And if you don't like your new overlords, you can always depose them.

    Mechanics: Bonus to stabilization rolls.

[Cultural Identity - War From Afar - Destabilization]: If the war with the Pavosi taught the Primal anything, it was how to wage war when you can't send troops. Namely, sabotage, sabotage and more sabotage. Eat up the enemy's resources and they will be unable to recover their losses or fight back. Destabilize their lands and hope a rebellion rises against their rulers.

Primus knows first hand how problematic a local rebellion or two can be.

    Spoiler: Future actions
    Show
These are actions I've discarded but am saving for later just in case.

    Claim 488, 458, 456 and 457

    [Diplomacy - Trade 458 for 455]:

[Curiosity - Modify Trade Route - The Grey Route - Add Colonia (44A)]: With House Animus in charge, the people of Colonia (especially the Whansis) resume their trade on the grey route, allowing for much-desired silks and cotton to flow into the region.

[Curiosity - Investigate - Tomb of Palindor - Roll]: The Satsujin are sent to study the Tomb of Palindor in more depth. Specifically, they're looking for any information on the old empire that Palindor was once a hero for. Perhaps if they find more information, they can learn where to search for more of these strange and powerful artifacts.

[Diplomacy - Destabilize Truserchen Capital - 300 - Roll]: In retaliation for the Truserchen's transgression on Berrium's soverignty and a deal previously made with Avonlea, the Satsujin steal as many clothes as they can from as many people as they can and proceed to burn them.

    The Satsujin are weird.

[Curiosity - Hostile Takeover - Trade Route Secondaris - Subtertius 58B]: The Alevear of the lands beneath Primus and Tertius are absolutely hostile towards one another, but Primus' traders seem to snap them out of their rage. The humans act as mediators between the two groups and manage to set up some minor trading.

[Military - Raise 1000 land troops]: Primus proper raises an additional two legions with the news that there is new land to conquer.

[Curiosity 5 - Change Resource (Quintas, 197) - Elephants [Minor] ]: House Eventus has attempted to wrangle and capture the elephants of their region, using them as their territory's export in place of what little peyote remains in the territory.

[Curiosity - Satsujin Spy Network 0/5]:

[Curiosity 5 - Change Resource - Quartus (47) - Aima Bloodseers [Minor]]: The Aima's ability to see blood is incredibly useful for many applications. They have begun offering their services in exchange for gold and other precious materials.

[Military - Invade 47B - 1000 troops]: The mysterious creatures beneath the earth known only as Archivists are, according to the workers, too horrifying to go near without an escort. Genuinely concerned that Quartus' workers are THAT pathetic, House Bestius provides them with a small escort. The act angers the mysterious creatures, but the situation appears to be relatively non-volatile at the moment.

    [Military - Invade 57B - 1000 troops]:

[Diplomacy 5 - Cultural Identity - Many Faces, Many Names - Bonus to Secret Actions]: "The Satsujin are fond of cover stories and names; so much so that adopting a new name for everything you do (from a job to walking to the market) is common amongst not only them, but the region they protect. Only the Satsujin truly know what the Satsujin do, but perhaps that is for the best."

    • <Curiosity 5> Improve Coal (region 24) to "Warven Coal"
Spoiler: Minor to Minor, but a more interesting resource
      Show
For many years the Warven of Aawino have been digging deeper and deeper into the regions's hills. At last, after decades of work, they reach a type of stone that no existing tools or weapon are able to blast through. They call this Consternation Stone, as it resists every attempt to go further. Many Warven just start digging outwards, but a few - a clever few, backed by the Autumn Aeldir in the region - investigate and continue trying to dig deeper. At first they try and use sharper tools, but those chip and break with the effort. Even pick axes made from Blood Roses fail.

So the story goes, a Warven by the name of Jibb spends months attacking the floor of his new cave, before he finally gives up. He starts to store coal in this, his final basement, and when he has himself a full barrel, he pauses from his efforts and decides to light up a well deserved pipe of tobacco. By some great twist of fate, Jibb drops the lit pipe into the barrel of coal, and a couple of the pieces begin to glow from the flame; a new strain of coal, found by Jibb's neighbor, that was dug up next to the Consternation Stone. Jibb looks at it with wonder, before realizing that it is getting quite hot within his basement, and then he hears a sound like a bubble popping.

That is the last thing Jibb seems to remember before his neighbor finds him unconscious, covered in the old type of Coal... and next to a small crater where the barrel had been. A crater in the Consternation Stone. At first, it is the Warven who descend upon Jibb to try and figure out what happened, and they makes the connection that the new strain of Coal seems to be volatile when lit; it does not just burn, it seems. It heats an area and explodes a few seconds later. With this realization, they show the Warven King, who shows his wife, who calls upon the Spring Court... and Lady Gwendeth responds en masse by sending an incredibly large number of Spring Court Girls to look into things further. With their curious and clever minds, the Spring Girls determine the best ways to locate and mine things... and also discover that this new Warven Coal only seems to pop and explode with very low flames (such as a single match), but higher flames - like a cooking fire - it functions like normal coal. Because of this, Warven Coal has likely been here for a very long time, and no one noticed till now.

    Spoiler: News and Rumors
    Show

    • Lady Kiltia of the Crystal Union and her team of Trade Experts - all pretense of Lady Kiltia not being in charge is gone - continue to monitor the Grey Drieduch. It is rumored that the change in leadership in the past couple of years has the team concerned.
    • Lady Spring still awaits judgement from Lord Summer and Lord Winter - and begrudgingly - Duke Autumn, regarding the matter of the previous Best Friend's indiscretions. No mention of Lady Spring's wrongdoings are brought up, but the now dead Lady Aleuta still stands accused being complicit of a major theft; and worse, being caught, with no evidence to the contrary.
    • The rumor that Lady Gwyndeth refuses to leave Tir Amser is given more credence when Lady Honora is sent to an otherwise important event in Lady Spring's stead.
    • Lady Gwydeth seeks to further relations with the Praetorians, so a missive is sent to their new Emperor, Cato Leonis: The Spring Court would like to expand the capabilities of the Institor Semita, if only the new Praetoria Empire will allow for the nearby islands to participate in open trade. They offer Clingweed and Rice.
    • The Warven Coal of Aawino provides many Spring Court members quite a lot to discuss and experiment with... until Lady Madlen causes a sensation when her research of the Arandi Runes proves interesting; especially to Lord Summer, who makes a leap and stride that no Spring Girl thought possible before. This show of faith by Lord Summer and the Speakers open an enormous opportunity to the Spring Court, who again becomes abuzz with the activity of researching the Arandi Runes on the Xungla Crystals. Truly, the Old Gods are amazing.

    4. [Diplomacy] Fluff action
Seeking to befriend Lady Kisu Jackson talks with her about her island and her family. Soon the two generals move on to comparing tactics and weapon choices, after all the new King has little experience in actual combat and wants to learn all he can. They exchange stories of their respective homelands, families and friends, childhoods and so on. One topic that keeps comes up are the Aeldir in combat. Jackson has read many a tale of their prowess but had never met a first hand witness until now.

Having dominated the Exalted tournament the Union sees little reason to return. The Lignummese royalty has their moonsilver axe and they will give the others a chance this time. (Also admittedly Jackson is not as capable as his mother was just yet)
In Heimat the level of house fires has gone up considerably.
On a completely unrelated note, some people are becoming lost in their tunnels and so the tunnel digging is banned.
Jackson is happy to offer his allies some resources. Plenty of food for themselves and/or tribute, silver for the dragon and bronze for the people to defend themselves if need be. Finally Blue Cedar for it's fire resistant properties that will surely come in handy if the dragon attacks.

Ysry formally abdicates the throne the day before his son's 17th birthday. As the sun rises the next day, Andarious is seen perched atop the Halls of the Queen in Amarthius. He only comes down minutes before his coronation. Now an adult, he strikes a stunningly handsome figure as he is crowned by his father within the temple to Queen Amarth. Amarthius, and most of Nemeria and Talodus, erupts into celebration which lasts over a week.

Andarious seems quit infatuated with his new bride. By 143, Riyle gives birth to their first child, a daughter named Sihaedra.

Rumors abound that the young Archduke has take up dragon worship. The new sapphire on his sword's pommel and his correspondence with the Crystal Union seem to support this.

The Master of Orphans has issued the following Holy decree:
Outlanders have arrived in our lands, and have asked for our assistance, and guidance. Upon review, and approval from the Council, the Holy Order is marching off to war. While we do have rebels within our own borders, their numbers are dwarfed by those perched right outside. The risks were weighed, and measured. With all involved deciding, and agreeing, on what the optimal path must be.

Yet, the rebels within our borders have not been forgot, or overlooked. Inquisitors have been sent to meet with the newest leader, or leaders, of the rebel horde, or hordes, in order to parlay and treat. In the hopes of reaching a possibly mutually beneficial solution.

The Hagiarchy of Besina's Round 22 actions

    Current Leadership:
    • King Phnalus (4 years in Power)
    • High Councilor Vinariun (Permanently in power)
    • High Councilor Oshenvar (Permanently in power)
    • Lady Cassandra Harrier (4 years in power)
    • Lord Gorubalsh, High Chieftain of the Gnolls (4 years in power)

    1. [D] With a smile on his face, King Phnalus publicly denounces the Grand Church of Daen for its lack of regard for the wishes of the Izele Clans and their cowardice in hiding behind the Stormlands. All the Church has succeeded in is spreading their blasphemous filth to where it is unwanted and hiding behind the protection of Avonlea while ignoring their example on how to properly moderate lies. Nobody who hasn't already succumbed to their influence wants them, and yet they continue to bring shame to their faith. A request is sent to Lord Winter to revoke the Grand Church's privileges and instead leave authority on the faith to Avonlea (everyone in power knows that this will be ignored, but the populace seems to love it).
    2. [D] Conduct a survey of the Lifewakers' effectiveness in regards to keeping the Hagiarchy free of Daenic influence, as after the Akimil incident anything seems within the realm of possibility. Several secret Daen converts are discovered among their ranks, and their new leader is sent a missive to the effect of: "You are no longer effective. Pack your personal affects and tell your subordinates to do the same. There is no room in our government for traitors."
    3. [F] [F5] Viewing it as a weak point in the religious stability of the Hagiarchy, Evergale Valley sees its local leaders banded together to form a more official religious order in the land than just "whoever happens to be on hand at the time" (exact quote from a local leader). The backlash is massive at first, but slowly gives way to understanding as the tree's expansion was by his design, meaning that he embodied the growth of the tree and therefore the vast majority of this structure (Oshenvar and Vinariun encourage these thoughts, strangely enough). {The Mahana de Rukha is now known as the Pralkemirial World Tree.}
    6. [F] The Lifewakers as a holy order are temporarily disbanded, replaced by voices of the now more hands-on Oshenvar and Vinariun. Rather than simply being deterred, intruding missionaries are now driven insane by the constant voices of the High Councilors; only those whose faith is unshakable will be able to make it in and out of Dhuda Besina with their mental state and new converts intact. {The lifewakers holy order is now known as the Whispers of the World Tree}

    • King Phnalus is rumored to have been in correspondence with the Queen of the Izele clans, and therefore has been aware of the Grand Church's continued audacity for some time now. The people, still infuriated by the traitor Akimil's destruction of Pralkemiri's soul, demand that the Daenites be denounced for disrespecting the Izele Clan's wishes. And so he does.
    • The scientific anomaly of the symbiotic relation between missionaries and trade routes has come under scrutiny as the Grand Church has demonstrated that with far less resources at their disposal (not to mention the dramatically lower missionary population) they have been able to ignore this little detail and trounce through lands with no trade caravans going outward (Izele Clans) while the ones who respect and encourage the abiding of religious standards and preach within their established limits with a country over several thousand
times larger than the Daenites' pathetic little monastery cannot do the same. The trade route theory is scrapped, and the people of the Hagiarchy begin searching for other explanations.

Since the farms in Bereholst and Tumbledown Marsh cannot support an army larger than it already is, Phnalus and Gorubalsh work to find other ways to gain advantages in the case of attacks. After months of brainstorming, a gnoll soldier named Karbash has an epiphany after trying to figure out which campfire his division was centered on. He is immediately made a general upon sharing his idea with the king, after which their new defensive strategy is born. By using fake campfires lined along an embattled area, the attacker has no knowledge of where the defending forces are truly camped, and so will be forced to choose one to strike against. Scouts observe the attacker's movements and the defenders adjust their location accordingly to gain an advantage. From there, victory is (probably) certain. {Create new military tech: Campfire Misdirection (+4 to defense with a successful tactical maneuvering roll)}

    • Threats of war from the Pale Empyrium and the Archduchy of Nemeria relating to the Rose Demesne's expansion into Dherai has prompted Duke Autumn to offer amelioration to the eastern powers surrendering Dherai and soon Bascaro without contention or stipulations beyond a request for amicable trade with the Aeldir in the regions. When Lady Elesi hears news of this surrender of the lands while carrying out negotiations in Bascaro the leading contender for the title of Lady Autumn is said to have begun to turn against the Autumn Regent.
    • While Duke Autumn has cast his vote in favor of declaring Aleuta Kellianth guilty of treason until such a time as definitive evidence is presented as to her innocence it is expected the ultimate sentence will need to be declared by the Aeldir lords of Winter and Summer.
    • Whether in an effort to court Lords Summer and Winter for their votes of condemnation of the late Lady Aleuta or simply to maintain tradition of the Autumn Court supplementing its northern and southern neighboring Courts Autumn efforts are out towards spreading the Words of the Old Gods and training further soldiers and sailors.
    • An attempt by the Spring Court to establish a "trade embassy" in Berrium was halted by Duke Autumn late in the year 141. This is said to have followed an angry letter from the Sun King of Nand relating to Lady Spring's brash approach in handling matters upon the western continent, matters recognized as the domain of the League of Allied Provinces. Some suggest Duke Autumn hoped for Lady Spring's defiance and was planning to turn the fresh faced Lady Spring over to the wolves of the west. Berrium's feelings regarding the matter are unknown.
    • The incredible might of the Crystal Union, which boasts a larger combined army and navy than the Courts alone command, has some worried that the southern federation will be looking for an excuse to turn their forces against their nearest rivaling power. With the delicate situation in the west and the thinly veiled hostility of the Pale Empyrium and now the Archduchy of Nemeria most Matrons fear war will soon grip the Demesne if every action is not carefully weighed.
    • The Kingdom of Koya receives an invitation to join the Autumn Court in its attendance of the Majestic Tournament. While a number of cessions and land trades are to be conducted at the Tournament it is hoped that the rexline kingdom will consider a place within the Demesne.

It is said these dark skinned captives represent some of the finest beauty of Dherai and as news arrives of Duke Autumn's intent to surrender Dherai to the Nemerians tales of their exotic nature begin to excite the minds of many Aeldir travelers.
    • Lord Turien reluctantly agrees with the Autumn Regent to declare Aleuta Kellianth a thief and traitor to the Rose Courts. A private letter is dispatched to the current reigning Lady Spring though its contents are unknown.
    • Lord Turien wishes to repay the late Lady Spring Aleuta Kellianth for her efforts in recovering Fireheart prior to her disgrace in the Rose Throne scandal and sends a number of Speakers of the Old Gods from his own Court as well as theologians of Daen, the Children of the Earth, and a few Pale Lady priestesses from Rivo Alto to try and uncover the supposedly divine power behind the Xungla Crystals. They are led on this expedition by a returning Bas Fury.
    • Following the Duel of Lord Summer Eoghan is sent north to the Winter Courtlands entrusted with a sealed letter from the newly risen Lord Summer to his northern peer. The Spring Court boy is said to be a capable warrior and his training in the northern court should establish him as perhaps the most capable fighter to emerge from the Spring Court in recent memory.

    Xungla Runes
    Spoiler
    Show

Study of the Xungla Crystals from the island populated by the salvax had largely fallen into decline following the discovery of the runes inscribed within the light emitting crystals. While extensive essays and books had been written on the subject by Spring Girls speculating to a wider array of possible 'Arandi Runes' inscribed by some ancient peoples or gods no further evidence had been discovered to support these speculations. The rising demands of the Spring Court's investigative minds prompted by a myriad of international mysteries relating to artifacts and assassinations drew attention away from the crystals and it seemed they might have remained little more than an idle curiosity. However, a single enterprising Spring Girl, Lady Madlen, refused to surrender her research into the light emitting crystals. Madlen focused not on the runes as a first step towards a broader language but instead sought to collate an in-depth study of the six lines and dots that composed the Arandi 'light' rune. This research eventually found its way to the hands of Lord Summer, likely due to the influence of Bas Fury and Lady Sabel. The Spring Girl's treatise spoke of replication and alteration of the rune for broader use beyond the crystals themselves although it speculated to the necessity for a great energy source necessary to kick start any efforts relating to the runes.

With news arriving of the Iron Gauntlet's destruction Lord Summer, long a patron of research and investigations pertaining to discoveries of magical nature, dispatched a number of theologians and Speakers of the Old Gods to meet with Lady Madlen. While Lord Summer had little desire to involve Lord Winter or his servants within the clergy he well knew the power of the Old Gods and members of the Dagda had often expressed their opinions that Dagdia, as the lord of the day and fire, was somehow connected to the emissions of light from the strange crystals.

Following months of study and debate among Lady Madlen, members of the Dagda, and the other theologians of Daen and the Children of Earth a test was agreed to. High ranking members of the Dagda would be attempt to replicate the rune upon the flesh of a living being before calling upon their patron to empower this new rune that the effects of the rune upon flesh might be studied. A number of animals were gathered and had tattooed, branded, and scarred into their flesh the 'light rune' and alongside them a member of the holy order volunteered to receive a tattoo of the rune.

A secret ritual was performed to call upon Dagdia's mighty power and in a blinding flash the might of the Old Gods' powerful magic was seen. The animals glowed brilliantly each matching the intensity of a Xungla Crystal equivalent their size but what drew the attention of those present was the volunteer from the Dagda who had disappeared. A pile of clothes jumbled in a heap beneath a slowly fading rainbow was all that remained and the watchers feared their god may have destroyed the volunteer for their hubris. Three hours passed and then, in a flash to match the first, the volunteer reappeared before them standing naked before them partially lit by the fading lights of a rainbow.

The volunteer explained that he had traveled to his home upon Tir Amser much to his own surprise. He had sought out the remaining members of the Dagda within the Summer Courtlands and explained to them what had occurred upon the jungle island. The ritual performed upon Tir Xungla was recreated and by Dagdia's hand he had been returned to where he had stood mere hours ago. This revelation and power is tested and proves itself capable of replication and Lady Madlen is vindicated for her work though the Speakers of the Old Gods are reticent to share the knowledge of their ritual with those outside the inductions of the Old Gods. While the key to this power remains locked away with the most devout of the Aeldir Old Gods its utility is to be seen by the most prestigious of the Demesne and by those deemed worthy by their Lords and the Speakers.

Mechanics: Holy Orders of the Old Gods eliminate distance penalty calculations for the five regions radiating from the specified holy order. Further these regions are considered "skipped" for political reasons meaning they cannot be blocked however any military units traveling in such a manner have no access to equipment beyond unicorns or other intelligent creatures who have been trained for military implementation.

Fluff: Followers of the Old Gods can ride rainbows to teleport now.

    The Xungla Rune

    The Duel
    Spoiler
    Show

To duel in the Summer Court was to enter into a dangerous game. Aeldir killing Aeldir was forbidden by ancient law so to take up blades for the express purpose of a duel was to risk one's life, not just at the hands of one's opponent but the victor too for the transgression of spilling their brother's blood. Every duel within the Court was to be nonlethal, each final blow that might kill a lesser creature had to be tempered just so that it did not surrender one's advantage but so too did not condemn the participants to death. While this provided a certain level of additional challenge it was seen by some as merely a restraint that prevented a truly decisive duel where no holds were barred or punches pulled. Without full competition a true victor was indeterminable for while one might rise above his peer in one fate as time marched on the defeated might surpass he who overcame him. There was only one exception to the law forbidding the killing of an Aeldir within the Summer Court, a tradition dating even further than that most ancient law, the Law of Lord Summer.

To become Lord Summer meant defeating the reigning lord of the southern court in single combat. Not just defeating however but killing one's opponent. Lord Drustan had killed Lord Kiev as Kiev had killed his predecessor. Turien might have killed Drustan had the latter not chosen instead to venture north to disappear beneath Caer Gheimhridh. In the absence of Drustan Turien had faced the other challengers for Lord Summer's mantle defeating them in an even bloodier show and claiming the title for his own. It was from that gory victory that he still reigned for none who might have had dared rise to challenge him. There were certainly those that wished to see him usurped but none with support of past conquests or encouragement from their fellow premier Summer lords enough to qualify. Turien had been careful not to allow any of his most able rivals to attain power, having learned from his predecessor's mistake, and his chief lieutenants that might challenge him were distracted with the attentions of the Demesne. Caedmoor with his human consort in Avonlea and Evander with the governorship of the midland isles had no time or desire to challenge their lord while Quillan could not hope to match Turien upon the dueling field. It had been a careful orchestration by Turien to remain unchallenged for as long as he was able. He had no desire to follow Drustan into the dark places beneath Lord Winter's city that his soul might be stolen and perverted for some dark purpose and so long as he remained Lord Summer he would not submit to his northern peer. If he was to be deposed he would need to be defeated in the old way, the way that ensured he would die free in the Summerlands.

When he arrived back in the Courtlands following his campaigns in the east he had heard of Maelog Oakburn, Lord Drustan’s bastard, and how the Summerling was quickly proving himself a more than capable warrior and duelist. It was said he had lost only once, in his first duel against Ranger Balwik, only to return and claim a championship from the Thyrngar which was swiftly followed by over twenty more victories. Still, Turien saw no need to worry. Maelog was a bastard half human upstart with no political support among the ancient lords of the Summer Aeldir. While he might be an exceptional duelist no amount of training could grant him the legitimacy necessary to challenge Turien. There were even rumors the boy was soulless, born outside the lands held sway to the Old Gods. With all this the boy might have been nothing more than a curiosity, a plaything to toy with and watch as he scrambled to prove his worth as an Aeldir. He was a nonentity; until the letters arrived.

First came the letter from Lord Winter, High Speaker of the Old Gods and conduit of their will upon Arandi. By the ancient lord’s decree Maelog was Aeldir, born true to the Old Gods’ hymns with all the right to name himself as Aeldir. Turien had been offended but unsurprised by the apparent disdain of his northern peer. Then came the letter from Evander, trusted Evander, that the Ranger would be casting his support behind the bastard boy in Maelog’s challenge to the title of Lord Summer. This had surprised Turien though as he thought more the pieces had slowly fallen into place. Evander had taken up with a Summer Speaker of the Old Gods as his consort and he did not doubt she had turned his once loyal compatriot against him. This knowledge did not lessen his fury however and when Maelog arrived to issue his challenge Turien had not hesitated to not only accept but to challenge Evander after, pledging to return east that he might remind his old friend of which of their pair was the true Lord Summer.

Now Turien stood shirtless in the ancient dueling grounds of Caer across from him his opponent the lithe half mortal bastard purporting himself as an Aeldir mirroring his preparations for their final duel. Turien had eschewed Fireheart for his traditional short sword, reserving the mystical artifact recovered by Lady Spring to his use as Lord Summer lest he be accused of trickery or bad faith by history. He was confident in his ability to outmatch Maelog Oakburn and his thoughts drifted easily beyond the current duel towards Evander. While he recognized his current opponent’s recent success twenty victories paled in comparison to Turien’s thousands. The reigning Lord Summer had fought since before the Age of Expansion, joined his predecessor in each of his campaigns, and waged more than one of his own. He had fought against Geshem, Fantastigorians, Pavosi, the people of the midland isles, and the Dherai. He had fought for far longer than the halfblooded Maelog could even have hoped to live had he not challenged the immortal Turien. Now he would be sure of the boy’s swift end.

Maelog spoke the traditional Aeldir words of challenge as they locked eyes and the viewing lords and ladies of the Court grew quiet. Turien met them with the necessary response. A bow shared and swords unsheathed. An ancient Speaker marked the era and the combatants within the annals with a practiced swiftness and at once they were upon one another. The blades of the combatants clashed with the sharp clang of metal on metal and each of the two whirled apart. Another series of testing strikes and parries rang out paced with beats of silent pacing as the two warriors circled one another and brandished their swords. Turien seemed unfazed by the determination or apparent skill of his opponent while Maelog’s piercing grey-blue eyes spoke only of a measured fury and focus.

Turien pressed suddenly against his challenger though Maelog quickly adapted, sidestepping and maneuvering to recenter himself in the ring. An overhead swing by Turien was turned aside by a swift parry which transitioned to a sidelong swing quickly dodged by the reigning Lord Summer. Maelog stayed under his opponent’s larger arcs and swings with swift jabs and swings most of which were dodged or deflected but some which struck true enough to elicit blood though not so deep as to be more than an annoyance. The cuts by comparison of the scars worn on Turien’s body seemed like the scratches of a rose’s thorn and he responded to them as though they were no more. Turien swung again at Maelog who moved to parry the blow but the Lord Summer quickly changed his apparent arc bringing his blade slicing down to catch the half Aeldir in the leg. Maelog leapt to avoid it but a moment too late and a great gash opened down his leg and was quickly wet with red blood.

Turien seemed impatient with Maelog’s impotent challenge and his sword came high again for another crashing blow when a voice shot through the crowd.

    “Stop!”

Had it been any other voice he would not have hesitated but he knew it well as the voice of Sabel, his First Consort and one true love. For all that she sought to use him as Lord Summer he knew their passions to be true. For all the cold distance that might arise for years he knew always she would return. His head turned and he saw her there at the edge of the crowd but she did not see him. Her eyes were locked upon Maelog’s form collapsed and bleeding at his feet. Confusion stalled his blade as he stared out upon the face of his ancient lover.

The blade was cold as it came crashing into his armpit from below. The sudden pain and severance of the sinew relaxed his hand instinctively and his blade fell to the ground with a soft thud. The odd sensation of something foreign moving beneath his skin came again this time with the accompaniment of searing pain as the blade slid free of his flesh. His view of Sabel caught now her eyes as she looked into his own for the first time. He could see hatred in them but also something more. He did not see them for long enough to know what for Maelog’s form soon filled his vision as the halfbreed stood from where he had knelt upon the ground. Turien stumbled back the shock of the sudden turn just now hitting him fully. A cold hand fell upon his shoulder as his back ran against the edge of the crowd.

“Lord Turien Drustan, I Maelog Oakburn have defeated you in single combat by the ancient Law of Lord Summer you are now sent to the mercy of the Old Gods.”

Turien’s chest heaved as he prepared himself to receive the fatal blow that would release him. For all that he despised the man before him and Sabel too for her betrayal he rested easy knowing at least Lord Winter would not steal from him his soul.

“I give him now to you Dullahan that your lord might bring him to the Old Gods mercy.”

The cold hand upon Turien’s shoulder tightened now, the thin white fingers of the Dullahan upon his flesh. He might have screamed or fought but already he grew faint from his wound. The last thing he saw as he slipped into darkness was the cool expressionless form of Maelog and the familiar form of Lady Sabel as she rushed to staunch the wound upon the halfbreed’s leg.

"As scholars who have devoted their lives to studying and learning the secrets used by ancient sorcerers and mystics, the Calign Archaists are loath to involve themselves in military matters, preferring the peace and safety of their laboratories and sanctums. But a select few choose to employ the secrets they have unearthed in the field, hoping to make even greater discoveries in the practical use of their art by combining their knowledge of bygone secrets with a modern understanding of medicine to produce a more well rounded and advanced treatment for the wounded. Some say the archaist's methods are magic, others that they simply possess a broader array of knowledge pulled from ancient empires. Whatever the case may be, there is no denying the effect is more lives saved."

A final push is made in the Izele Clanlands to eradicate the pagan hive worship and promote in the place of the Queen of Bees a Daenite monarch from within, recognized as holding the authority and support of the Grand Church. The troop aid sent by the Crystal Union to the Izele is noted within the church's records and some within the Church stir for condemnation of the heretical pandraconis Order of the Eternal Soul. The Elder Abbot reserves judgment for now though events within the Izele Clanlands could alter his opinion. A preemptive missive is sent to Queen Raena of the Stormland Holdings requesting Stormland Legionaries assist the brave abbots and abbesses in the Clanlands should the Queen of Bees retain enough power to react with violence against the Gospel.

Satisfied with her accomplishments as Veiled Lady and growing infirm in her advanced age Raya Grimhand steps down from leadership at the House. The next Veiled Lady is found in Audralean. Having led the majority of Pale Lady followers as Archpriestess of the region for over a decade Rebece Petila is well versed in the teachings of the Lady as well as possessing significant experience as a leader of larger congregations. Rebece is well regarded for not only her acceptance of the Nine Candles followers in Audralean but her history of working together with the disparate ascetics to maintain peace and order among their congregations. In her inaugural address as Veiled Lady she pledges not to use the Lady's teachings as a weapon or tool to push out native or foreign faiths who prove themselves amicable to cooperation but instead to pursue her goal of allowing the Teachings to spread as far as possible, even if only some will choose to accept them into their hearts.

The new Veiled Lady first sets her eyes on the expansive but somewhat isolationist Nihoni Expanse. The underground realm has spread far beneath the continent so broadly claimed by followers of the Lady yet few outside a small sect of followers in the Exarchate's capital have been given the opportunity to learn of the Lady's teachings. A number of priestesses are sent to try and make inroads throughout the Exarchate and ensure the Realm of the Pale Lady does not forget its brothers and sisters beneath the earth.

Followers of any ninth virtue will be welcomed at the doors of the temple and healthy philosophical debate returns to the forum of the Nine Candles.

Given the positive reception and relationship between the Primus Imperium and the Temple further ascetics are sent to Primus as well as to nearby Colonia in the hopes of bringing Primal leadership into the fold. While the secular focus of the Imperium is recognized and respected it is hoped that their devotion to their kingdom does not preclude the freedom to worship privately and strive for self betterment as followers of the Virtues. The acceptance of the Ninth Struggle and its shift in philosophy by the Temple is expected to play a role in developing relations with the militant but honorable Imperium.

Skada Lochbar is contacted and invited to join the Suzerain on campaign westwards against the infidel outpost ruled by the expansionist Kingdom of Berrium. While it is known that the loss of the Helm of Fimbulvinter weakens the Nifhel leader it is hoped that the chance to dismember and slaughter followers of the Serpent will reinvigorate the only worthy foe the Suzerainty has ever faced. The Suzerain brings forth the concept that should the twin kingdoms of Fimbulvinter bathe the world in the blood of the infidels they shall surely find the Helm shining silver amidst the red.

As Kanel marches eastward Vice Regent Feywik begins the complex process of organizing trade within the Suzerainty. The dominant divisions of the empire are between the eastern and western hordes conquered by Kanel's father early in the days of the Suzerainty and it is along these lines that trade is demarcated. Excess tributary funds are directed towards the New Capital where the Suzerain established his court and from where the Vice Regent directs the state in his father's absence.

Raena's return from Avonlea bearing letters of governance to Thurdan, Region 96, and Region 98 is celebrated in the capital. Additional letters from merchants and local administrators are sent to Queen Raen and Lady Spring requesting aid in organizing trade throughout the Holdings. Agitation and discontent is known to breed rebellion and so far little has changed within the merchant communities of the Stormlands. Given the lack of initiative taken by the Stormlands ultimate liege Raena takes it upon herself to organize trade within her kingdom. The Queen oversees the expansion of the Stormlands Supply System established under her brother as a minor army supply route into a full fledged kingdom-spanning exchange route for the kingdom's goods.

With the aid of the Avonlean Daughters of the Moon a holy order of abbesses takes root in the Stormlands. Ned the Brown is named as the chapter's head abbess. The nobility watches nervously as greater power is disseminated to the holy order and the Daughters are given full authority to establish abbeys and expunge heresy through the kingdom. A number of these newly established Daughters are sent to Thurdan on a mission to bring the Gospel to the Minotaurs who in recent memory rose against the Queen's brother. The belief is that should the brutish minotaurs come to understand the Gospel of Daen and their place within it as natural children and servants to rightly ordained Daenic monarchs such rebellion will be less likely to occur in the future.

The satyr of Uldrakka and Holshin are renowned for their unbridled curiosity and intellectual devotion to what others might consider pointless pursuits. It was one of these pointless pursuits that recently developed an alchemical composition made by mixing finely ground sulfur and coal together to create a potent mixture that burns faster and brighter than any known composition. A Glenn'Kh'lor trader observed a demonstration of these properties and immediately bought a large quantity with the intent to sell it among his own destruction-loving people. It was in a Glenn'Kh'lor village that a member of the Unity observed the mixture and discovered its origin point. The discovery was soon reported to the finest natural philosophers of the court and has been developed into simple exploding shells whose incredibly bright flash and loud popping sound are expected to aid any light fast military operations carried out by those carrying them.

The Tagra Sunstones are considered divine gifts from the ancient magi of Tagra granting them immense mystical value to the native people of the region. Their perfectly cut shape and golden glow draws foreign interests with their beauty. Over the previous two years the known existing sunstones outside of Tagra have been quietly purchased or otherwise procured by a number of royal agents and collected in Melrakki-ey. Twenty are known to currently exist and the Unity now possesses fifteen directly with the remaining five held by the Tagra lords of Old Tagror, Egralor, Adrayon, Sirenian, and Klephtis.

Either influenced by Tagra histories or simply a desire to establish greater order Nim'Aii Fryst declares the sunstones as marks of semi independent noble office and implements a sweeping set of edicts to reinforce the power of major nobles within the Unity bound to the possession of a sunstone. The five Tagra lords of the south along with the Conductor, head of the Uldrakka and Holshin Satyr; Count Rain of the Syl'Naas elves; and King Ghak of the Glenn'Kh'lor human tribes are recognized as major lords of the Unity and granted a sunstone to mark their rank. The Fryst tribe of Svatr Melrakki-ey and the Refr tribe of Melrakki-ey are also granted a sunstone each to mark their importance in guiding the Unity's Melrakki peoples. The remaining sunstones are locked away for use in either trade or for implementation in further lands either within the Unity or without. Some worry too much power has been granted to the Tagra cities though many dismiss such fears as unfounded given the propensity for intense rivalry between the Tagra city-states.

With the larimp war ended Queen Yildiz refocuses her efforts on the internal affairs of her kingdom. While trade matters are largely taken care of save the newly acquired Jagalatan regions there is a distinct lack of unity beyond fear of the small queen shared among the various counties, duchies, and baronies. A letter of invitation from the western Crystal Union to a conclave of faith arrives just when it seems the Queen is concluding that a unified faith would serve her purposes well. Studying what introductory material is provided regarding the faith alongside the invitation the Queen seems especially drawn to the Onyx dragon despite its condemnation within the scripture. The Transfirlian Queen elects to send representatives eastwards alongside the Jagalatan diplomats to meet with the Order representative and procure the necessary material to begin spreading the teachings the Order within her borders.

The Transfirlian army is expanded with another cohort drawn from Milquogh and the training regimen is expanded to instruct the armies in identifying and destroying unrecognized holy sites and relics. Though he carried the title of Lord during his revolt against the administration of the Aardrosil, Edmun Blackblade was first the elected leader of the town of Harowell, the largest settlement of Arakis in the high mountains of Arakhal. Disgusted by the perceived (and real) incompetence of the foreigners that had claimed rulership over his people, Edmun turned his acerbic wit and clever tongue to turning neighboring settlements against their Noorden oppressors, using the lever of their faith in the Lady to urge them to meet the challenge being set before them. With a significant number of the warrior lodges swayed by his arguments, Lord Edmun led a lightning revolt that caught the Noorden governors and administrators completely unprepared – by that point, political infighting between the Great Houses had reached a critical juncture, drawing their attention towards home and even further away from their duties to the realm. Making use of the relative isolation of each settlement, he was able to strike against the garrisons piecemeal, minimizing bloodshed and forcing unconditional surrender in most cases. This swift and easy success may be part of the reason the rebellion collapsed in the face of the Clan Holds response; the lodge-trained warriors excelled in small unit tactics and were individually superior swordsmen, but outmaneuvered and outnumbered over two-to-one by highly disciplined, well-trained and seasoned soldier, the few actual battles were utterly one-sided, leading to a collapse in morale. Boxed in and facing the destruction of his men, Edmun surrendered to the enemy commander, none other than the Dei Empyrus himself, grabbing at a last chance to plead for his people to the highest secular power in the Empyrium.

Initially held as a prisoner (comfortably, as befit a noble) for several months while his claims were thoroughly investigated, he subsequently spent several years in the company of the Empyrus, being shown that despite the problems besetting the north, the Empyrium does improve the lot of those brought into the fold, as well as being tested by Clan elders and priestesses of the Lady for suitability as lord of a vassal state. Following the Conclave of the Pale Lady in which he was recognized as Margrave of the Pale Reach Edmun has made it his mission to see that the security both economic and military is secured in the stretches of land granted to his oversight.

Though he had no hand in the initial uprising, Commander Litefoot, head of the Highwall garrison, took control of the defense of Wallnoth after the Aardrosil clan lord who had been given charge of the region abandoned it in the face of armed rebellion. A calm, patient man with a deeply-rooted sense of duty, he had a hard time staying neutral and keeping the guard out of the uprising, knowing they couldn’t prevent it and committing them either way would only exacerbate the bloodshed and chaos – it is a mark of the respect and loyalty he inspires in his men that not a single one broke ranks. Once the initial spate of violence had run its course, Samwell felt obligated to help defend his home from what he saw as the inevitable reprisal bound to be headed their way and turned all of his efforts to stabilizing his city, and by extension rebuilding some semblance of social order.

When the expected attack came, it was not the foe Samwell had expected – rather than the warrior bands of the Noorden, it was a block of disciplined footmen flying the banner of the Clan Holds, backed by a cadre of drimma engineers. The wall around which he had planned his defense proved little obstacle to the children of the Architect, and the defenders were soon forced into a pitched battle that fell in the favor of the more heavily armed and better supplied Clan Hold troops. Taken captive during a last gasp assault on the attacker’s headquarters, Samwell was brought before the Empyrus for judgement. His reasoned account of Wallnoth’s grievances, made with no attempt to justify or make excuses for his actions as anything other than the performance of his duty, earned a grudging respect from the lord of the Clans. Investigators were sent to confirm his account, while Litefoot himself was subjected to tests and trials by the Clan elders and priestesses of the Lady. These tests and trials brought him into contact with Architect Doyle Rothand on many occasions, and mutual respect earned on the battlefield developed into a friendship based on a kinship of spirits.

Following the Conclave of the Pale Lady the common-born Litefoot was granted the noble title of Baron of the North Hold and given lordship of his homeland in Walnoth as well the politically volatile lands of Phoenixcrest. The ennobled Baron is intent to bring law, order, and discipline to his holdings alongside peace and prosperity. Marshall Eustas of Cullfield in Phoneixcrest is summoned before the Baron and given a set of tasks to aid the Baron in establishing order in the bay region with the warning that should he fail he will be replaced irrespective of the deals he has made with the Master Architect. The first order of business is to establish a Sheriff's Office in Cullfield where the Baron and Marshall may stage efforts to push down into the lower levels of the city and repeal the gang influence in these areas. It is hoped that a site of law and order will inspire hope among the people and drive enlistment into the Sheriff's service. A Sheriff is yet to be chosen from among the populace.

Effort is additionally put towards attempting to bring the teachings of the Pale Lady to Cullfield in the hopes that the communal tenets promoted by Her teachings will discourage acts of violence and drum up support for the newly ordained Baron.

1.) Construct and establish the Cullfield Sheriff's Office in Phoenixcrest (1/2) [Diplomacy]
2.) Meet with the Kingdom of Aardrosil and accept [Region 297] into the Barony [Diplomacy]

Crystal Union interest in Tyrvania and the provision of resources to the Belphemous Tributary Trail is appreciated. The Dukes have been receiving many requests from King Oliver II to provision the land with both resources and a capable military defense which is being seen to by Duke Aghrim. The Tyrvanian king expresses a mixture of relief and fear as greater contact outside the forest is made. The Immortals carefully monitor tributary and military activities in the region. Efforts are made to integrate the local cult with the Eternal Soul doctrine to some success which leads to a larger number of Dragon Scales being made available for exportation.

Duke Marl of Westan oversees an aggressive campaign of mercantile expansionism throughout the Allied Provinces. There is little love lost between the Drieduch and the Allied Provinces though both have benefited greatly from expansive trade relations. With the signing of the Treaty of Ember City the Primal enclave is added to the list of potential regions of economic expansion. A flood of well funded grey merchants spill into the expansive lands of the western federation.

    The Ancerin Empire
    Emperor Spiridon de Altan

1: [Diplomacy 5] While the Ancerin Empire has always been a decentralised state, reorganisation of the growing Imperial bureaucracy in Azandria to better support local laws and customs is undertaken to ensure that the disparate peoples of the Empire are properly looked after by their Emperor. Add Cultural Identity: Decentralised Rule. Bonus to stabilisation rolls.
2: [Diplomacy] Attend the Magnificent Tournament.
-Grand Princess Athanasia de Altan is married to Crown Prince Gaius Binaris of Berrium.
3: [Curiosity 10] The difficulties in laborious carving blocks of wood for every page of every book mean that while books are cheaper than ever they are still beyond the reach of most people and greatly limited the spread of less well known texts. To combat these issues, a team of craftsmen and printers at the Imperial University of Azandria have perfected an alternative and just as revolutionary method. By casting each of the thirty plus letters of the Ancerin Alphabet in individual blocks one can arrange them as fit, print as many pages are needed and then rearrange the "type" to produce different pages, or even scrolls, pamphlets, notices, advertisements, etc. The process uses a special alloy developed with the aid of noted alchemist Dottore Mariano D'Tana, the composition of which is kept a closely guarded secret by the Alchemy Department of the Imperiale and the nascent Printer's Guild of Azandria.
In short, introduce Movable Type. +1 to stabilisation rolls. Requirements: Woodblock Printing and paper/papermaking materials. (The special alloy is just type metal, an alloy of lead, tin and antimony.
4: [Curiosity] The popularity of the Honey Duke's explodes across the Isle of Anceris, rapidly making Vittore Serpico one of the richest non-landowners on the island. Eager to get more business, he sets up his first continental operation in the City of Toralmist. The circular chicken and beef sandwiches soon become a hit among cattlemen and townspeople alike. Establish a Honey Duke's franchise in Cerilin. [2/5]
5: [Curiosity] The collection of rare texts for the Palace Archives continues unabated and the palace archivists work around the clock cataloguing and copying the recovered books and scrolls. In short, continue amassing the greatest library ever. [2/5]

Fluff Post: Of Queens and Assassins

    Spoiler: A long story
    Show

*This story has occurred IC, but as of the time it is posted this may only be known OOC. Do not metagame, I beg of you.

The day prior to Winter’s Eve, Year 141 in the Arandi Calender.

The lady of emeralds stood upon the deck of the ship so aptly named ‘The Crimson Escape.’ Finally, after so many months of being captive in her own home, under the guard of her own people.. Gods, how had they turned on her so quickly? Lilia was ever a benevolent queen, and she had never spoken ill to those she worked with; Nor those who served her. Many nights were spent wondering how this had even come to pass, until finally she realized that no matter how unjust the situation was, things would not get better until she made them so. A hundred plans were crafted in her time as a prisoner. With limited resources and an undetermined amount of trustworthy allies she would plan her route with much care, so that even the spies that watched her day and night would know not what she intended. It would require intellect, speed, and a great deal of luck to pull off in any case. Hopefully in the time she had been locked away Zellevera would have grown forgetful of the information she so desperately needed Lilia to be silent about.. Though she doubted such to be the case.

A few years prior, during the internal (political) wars of succession within the Dynasty of Escaye some rather cruel cards had been played. While Lilia was argued to be the more experienced of the two, Zellevera was said to have a certain zeal that she lacked. She said she would bring their federation to new heights like neither the League of Allied Provinces nor the Rose Courts could ever hope to achieve. A military capable of defending their borders even if the world care crashing upon them, a faith spread across nations on all corners of the globe, a respect given to the south so that they might never be slighted again in any conference or trade deal to ever occur, lest the offender be put to a thousand deaths.. And she was willing to go to any extreme to make such a thing happen. Such ways were contrary to the values of the very faith that she was trying to spread, but she never saw the difference. Luckily, her council had. And thus Zellevera was denied; But she was not defeated so easily. Under Zellevera’s orders, Lilia was to be assassinated. Twice. Both times they had failed, thanks to the same guard that kept her alive. His name was Torn, and he fought her offenders off with the fury of the divine dragons themselves. He admitted to be working for Zellevera. A spy, so that she could watch her. But in the time he had watched, his loyalties had switched. He saw that Lilia was honest and peaceful in a way that Zellevera might never be. After hearing of each assassination, he made sure to protect her from each, but told her that he would not be able to continue after the second. If the ‘Fierce’ queen heard of his betrayal, he would be either put to death or imprisoned for life; So he pleaded her to step down so that she might keep her life in tact.

Swayed by such a compassionate plea, Lilia stepped down, and was thus succeeded by the ambitious young girl who had seemingly appeared out of nowhere to steal her position. Had the heavens betrayed her in such a cause? She bore the scars of her struggle across her face, and then was humiliated by making her brilliant emerald scales a symbol of a Queen who had failed. She had not protected the people from their own system, even when her life was put at risk. But in keeping her life, she also managed to keep much of her say in the council of advisors to the new Queen. Each of Zellevera’s plans she heard, and all of them she remembered. Most outrageous of these plans were those to “Show the world what a denunciation from the Crystal Union truly means.” These entailed the humiliation of both the great clans of Nifhel and the Rose Courts, who had offended the church of the Eternal Soul upon the day that the council of faith was hosted. If Lilia remembered correctly, almost none among those present were willing to co-operate, but those two had either personally insulted the church or showed reckless displays of power in their participation. Both were denounced, but no action was taken for it.

    Until then.

Zellevera must have been very fond of thieves to have pulled off what she did; Working with the other leaders of the Crystal Union to steal first the piece of the Rose Throne, and then the legendary ‘Maggot Feeder’ in the north. The latter may have proven too risky in the end, but the first went off in a way perhaps much more effective than intended..

The initial plan was that the quarter of the Rose Throne would be taken and passed to an enemy of the Aeldir. Someone neutral but not favoured in their eyes, and who could have stolen the throne themselves. Most importantly, it would have to be one who would not give it back. The Jagalatans of the east fit such a description, and thus once it was sent, it was assumed to be done. One quarter of the Aeldir lords lost their ‘Right to Rule,’ and it would look bad on them politically. That was all. Nobody would be hurt. It was for this reason that she did not speak against the new queen.

But then the Hive Queen was slain on the night the chair was delivered, and things had gone hellbound from there. With Transfirlia in possession of the piece, and the initial recipient dead, it appeared that the poor Jagalatans had done the crime without a doubt, and the rescuers themselves were those who had attacked the underground peoples in a brutish attempt to claim their land for themselves. This saddened her. So much bloodshed, and the shame of being robbed bestowed upon people one of her friends, Lady Aleuta. Around that time she came to visit her friend, and told her of how Zellevera had tried to kill her twice over.. She displayed to her compassion, and told her that if she ever needed a place to stay safe from harm, that the Rose Courts would happily take her into their embrace. It was so nice to have a friend once again. To recall a sincere promise of health and safety. She almost told her of how Zellevera had taken her throne and thrown her courts into chaos – Yet she didn’t, and the years after she spent regretting it told her that one line that night could have changed the fate of the world had she only spoken.

Shortly after, Lady Aleuta herself was framed for the thievery of the throne piece, and before such a thing could be resolved she was put to death. Mistrust was brewed between Aeldir Lords, but all Lilia could feel was her failure to her friend like a stain upon her soul; A scar upon her face. She demanded Zellevera tell her if she ordered the death of her ‘Rival,’ to which she responded, “No, though I wish that I had. Altogether, this makes a very convenient inconvenience, do you not think?”

No, she did not think so. Not at all. Never. She could never perform such a despicable act – Much less answer so casually for it. Lilia was outraged, and threatened to go tell the new Lady Spring herself of Zellevera’s misdeeds.

Naturally, this was not a wise thing to say. It landed her in house arrest, where she made her plans of escape with that same double agent who had saved her life. A secret passage.. A trip to the shore.. The boarding of a boat.. Within two nightfalls, Zellevera’s crimes would finally be known.

So there she was, atop the deck of the Crimson Escape, alone save for only three faithful men who offered to save her from her fate as a prisoner. Her boat was not exactly tiny, but did not need many men to get sailing. Apparently this was a ship used to transport prisoners, which sent a shiver down Lilia’s spine. A ship meant to contain criminals bringing their Queen to freedom. It was rather ironic once she thought about it. The cool winter air floated about her as she hugged onto her steel grey cloak, practically breathing ice as she listened to the calm waves lapping at the side of the ship. Last time she was on a ship like this she.. No, she didn’t want to remember the accident that gave her the terrible scar. Enough things already kept her awake at night.

It was night-time, and the sky was illuminated by a thousand stars up above.. She caught herself starring up at them when she heard the sound of footstep approaching. Metal on wood. A quick turn would reveal Torn, the heroic figure who had brought her so far. “Guards, you are dismissed.” He commanded, watching as the three men moved below deck to rest for the night. He settled beside her, placing her hands on the railing of the ship and looking up to the brilliant sky alongside her.. For a moment they stood in silence, which was broken rather unexpectedly.

“Do you remember that night I told you I worked for Zellevera, Lilia?”

A sudden unease grew within her as the woman shook her head. “Yes.. I remember it well. I learned that night that actions spoke much louder than words, and that if you are a person who is kind enough, that there are those who will be kind to you in turn. ..People like you, Torn.” She smiled to him despite the feeling, still looking up to the sky.

“Yes.. But there are always those who would try to take advantage of those who are kind like yourself. They would go to any length to make you suffer, and that is why I am here to prevent it in the only way that I can…”

    “..Oh? What do you..?

“I might regret this, Lilia.. I can say sincerely that I hope your soul may find solace in the heavens of your gods. ..For it will find none among the cruel grip of the Iron Gauntlet. If it is possible, I pray you do not take this personally.”

Just as she started to pull back, she was grabbed by the neck, looking in horror at the one she believed to be her salvation raising her feet off the ground and choking her fragile figure. He pushed her back over the edge of the railing, looking down at her before closing his eyes. It seemed that even he was not totally comfortable with what he had to do.. And like that, Lilia floated on the edge of consciousness for several seconds, finding the world spinning atop her until..

    “Fire!”

The whissing of a bolt shot past her, imbedding into the assassin that held her. His arm was shot, and thus he released his prey in a contortion of pain. The Lady of Emeralds fell to the ground, breathing in desperately as she watched the scene play out from the ground.

Soldiers poured out of the lower decks, surrounding the assassin at swordpoint. There must have been at least ten in all – A great amount compared to the size of the small ship. “W-What is the meaning of this?” Torn demanded, a hint of fear in his deep voice. “You dare meddle with the iron gauntlet? You are the very folk who hired me!” He had several crossbow bolts imbedded in his body.. One in his stomach, another in his wrist.. He was bleeding heavily, and looked as if he was to fall over with even a single step. Lilia’s nemesis stepped out from behind the row of men, and they parted silently for her arrival. Each soldier wore only light armor, a type of hide from an animal unbeknownst to the Lady of Emeralds.. It was no wonder they much such little noise as they moved.. How had this happened? She was still light-headed.

“You will be coming with us assassin. That is, if you value the life of both your vessel and yourself..” The pendrel grimaced in response, stepping back towards the edge of the boat. “Jump and I’ll have you shot down in seconds. There is no way out of this.” Reluctantly the man nodded, raising his hands above his head and looking downwards solemnly. “..Very well. You have my co-operation for the time being. Know that the iron gauntlet will be here to free me once they do not here back from me – And they will not be happy with this..” This inspired a chuckle from Zellevera, who had him whisked away into the cages of the decks below. “We’ll see. ..Now back to my living rival..”

The girl took a few steps towards Lilia, who had only just managed to stand back up against the railing. Her fellow Queen and Zaj held a fancy knife in her hand, which she played with freely as she drew in uncomfortably close to the skin just beneath the scales of Lilia’s neck. “You are a fool to think you would get anything past me, Lilia. It would save me the trouble of explaining this to the rose courts to kill you here, would it not? The Lady of Emeralds, tragically assassinated by the iron gauntlet aboard her own vessel.. Luckily, the true queen was able to step in and capture the offender.. I can see it now, me as the head of the revenge against the ones who shattered the topaz division so long ago.. Doing what neither the rose courts nor the UNE could do with the help of my ‘willing’ inside agent.. And not a single person would know of how it was we who took revenge on those we denounced. It would all be wrapped up so neatly..”

Lilia swallowed hard, feeling the knife draw blood from her. She gasped as it did, unable to move her head back any more. “I could kill you now.. But I hesitate. If not for you, how could I have captured the assassin? I will give you a chance Lilia. You will be free again with no restrictions so long as you grant me complete authority of the crown, and vow never to betray your queen again.. After all, treason doesn’t look good on anyone. Especially you.”

Sweat dripped down Lilia’s forehead. What could she say? There was a knife to her throat, and all her nerves were standing on high. If the situation grew any more tense, she might just take Zellevera’s offer to kill her off now. A second passed. Two. The two Queens starred into eachother’s eyes. One with fear, the other with a cool hatred. A hatred Lilia failed to understand in any way. “Y.. Yes. I surrender.. P-Please.. Let me go..” The knife grew relaxed, and Zellevera released her from the grip against the rail of the boat. “..Good. You will mention this to nobody, lest I find myself taking back my generous offer..”

With that, she went to visit her prisoner, leaving Lilia in the company of only the stars and her tears.
