"Let's get going ponies," Rainbow Dash said, itching for their adventure to begin.

Twilight read her spellbook while they walked. Apparenly it was another thing that came naturally to the body. "Well, according to this, I can cast a Flight spell, but only a few times per day. So I'd be able to let you fly, Rainbow Dash, but not the whole group. So we need another way to cross the water. Do any of you have spells too?"

I think I can turn into a big sea creature like an octopus or a Lake monster. Then I can just forward everyone across. Fluttershy contributes.

Applejack glances across the river trying to gauge the distance. Luckily there didn't seem to be any rough patches. "I dunno Pinks, lesse how fast it's moving afore we start that. Plus we all seem to be wearin' a awful lot o' metal."

She squats down on the bank and dips her new hand in the moving water.

The river is runs at about 3 mph on the surface, but Applejack senses that there might be some faster undertow that will make crossing more difficult. The river is mostly between 2 and 4.5 feet deep.

Overall, the Strength (Athletics) DC for crossing without aid is 14.

Applejack hisses through her teeth at the river. "Yeah, there's an undertow, iffin we was back home, I'd say chomp on ma tail, an' I'd haul y'all across. But, I'm not real clear on jest how strong I am like this." She gestures broadly to her small frame. "Plus, I'm pretty sure that river is over Twilight's head an' prolly mine too. 'Shy, how long you reckon you kin change into a critter like that big ole Steven whassis name? I'm thinkin' that's the safest way."

OoC: I hate to burn a big beast shape this early but the odds on 6 or more DC 14 STR checks are not something I like. Maybe do an alligator or crocodile and still have some land utility?

Pinkie rolls her eyes and sighs, but says Yeah, that's probably smart. Also, wait a minute wait a minute wait a minute wait a minute WAIT A MINUTE-You can turn into animals, Fluttershy? That's so cool!

"Um, it does sound kind of cool." She says a bit (naturally) embarrassed about the attention she's garnered.

"I think, four hours...I really don't know how I know all this. Also, I won't be able to talk while I'm shifted. So just nods and growls." she answers Applejack.

"Hm...Twilight, how many people can you have flying at once?" Rainbow Dash asked, scanning the skies with a critical eye as she tried to gauge the wind speed. "The stronger swimmers could go across normally, and the flier could carry Twilight across..." she mused, thinking things through.

"Hmmm." Twilight flipped through the spellbook rapidly. "Three it seems. But after that, it looks like I wouldn't be able to cast any spells of that power at all until the next time we rest." Twilight sighed, blowing her bangs out of her face."The magic in this world is all wrong."

What's a vance? Fluttershy asks. She thought she knew better than to ask but who knows, maybe Pinkie pie might have some deep insight like that very specific time with the parasprites.

Applejack ponders a moment. " Iffin' magic is in short supply here, then we jest do things the Apple family way. C'mon y'all. We'll follow this here river, till we find a bridge."

Fluttershy takes things a bit higher by wildshaping into a giant eagle and flies up to get the lay of the land.

From above the trees, Fluttershy can see far and wide.

The forest extends for miles to the east and south. To the southwest, it terminates at the foot of a chain of mountains, while to the north it gives way to plains. The wide river winds through the forest, fed by the occasional creek running from the mountain slopes or springs. In the distance to the east a tall pine tree, hundreds of feet taller than any around it, stands like a watchful guardian.

The party is currently positioned at the top-left of a U-shape in the river. At the nadir of the shape is an island with bridges that connect the two banks of the river. It would be about two-hours' walk, taking into account the rough terrain.

The road follows the river, apart from a shortcut that cuts across the U. There are a few pedestrians on the road, and several boats on the river, most of which are heading toward the source.

Pinkie Pie makes it two-thirds of the way up the tree before the branches become too thin to climb. While the needles of the surrounding trees make it impossible to see far, she does find a bird nest which contains three speckled blue eggs and a ring. The ring is made of silver and is fitted with a small garnet.

Guys! I found a shiny! Pinkie says excitedly. Fluttershy, is it okay if I take it from the birds?

Caaaaaaaw. Caaaw?! caw. The giant eagle replies in surprise then annoyance.

I'm gonna assume that's yes! Guys! Pinkie calls down. I found shiny!

Twilight walked over to the tree Pinkie climbed, barely batting an eye. "What sort of shiny did you find, Pinkie? Can I see it?"

Pinkie grabs the ring and lets herself flop down, legs hooked over a branch and her torso upside down. Here you go! she says, dropping the ring into Twilight's hands.

Twilight took the ring carefully, and examined it for any sort of magic.

Twilight examines the shield-cut garnet closely, and seeks a spark of magical power within. This ring is enchanted with an abjuration spell, which is activated by some kind of trigger, or a specific verbal command. Twilight would need to use the Identifyspell or spend a short rest examining the ring more closely to determine its full properties.

Fluttershy turns back to normal and informs the others.

'If we follow the river south for two hours we'll eventually come across road and a pair of bridges at a bend in the river. i saw carts and people. Furthre south there's a forest with a really big pine tree in the middle.'
