Re: Simple Q&A (By RAW) III
Q 552
If a small dragon were to pick up a small-sized longsword and wish to use it in battle, what would their full attack action consist of?
Specifically, can a dragon's bite attack be used as a secondary attack, in addition to their claw attack(s), when using a different primary attack then normal?

Re: Simple Q&A (By RAW) III
A. 552
There is no problem mixing natural weapon attacks with manufactured weapon attacks.
The number of manufactured weapon attacks are still determined by BAB and all natural weapon attacks are made as secondary attacks.
A small dragon would attack either with manufactured weapon/claw/bite or weapon/bite dependent on the weapon being one-handed or two-handed, respectively.Last edited by Lord Lorac Silvanos; 2007-08-28 at 04:25 PM. Reason: wording

Re: Simple Q&A (By RAW) III
A458 more opinion
If jump specifically SAYS you can use it and tumble does not, then I'd say those special move actions need to be opted IN instead of excluded.
From a logic perspective, charge involves gathering momentum to add to your attack AND it involves disregarding your own safety to do so. Jumping is neutral towards defenses, but the downward portion of the jump adds to the momentum of the attack. On the other hand, tumbling scatters your momentum and focuses on your defense. For that reason, tumbling seems antithetical to charging.
Barring a specific RAW inclusion or exclusion, I believe this goes beyond the scope of the Simple Q of this thread.

Q 552 - Followup
This is true even though every other natural attack of the dragon is listed as a secondary attack, while the bite attack is not?
Sorry, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a problem with using a, more-or-less, 'primary' natural attack as a secondary natural attack according to RAW.

Re: Simple Q&A (By RAW) III
Both say that they are included or part of movement.
The Sage has ruled that Jump can be used in a charge, presumably based on a wording similar to that of Tumble.

Re: Simple Q&A (By RAW) III
Q. 553
Is there an official (WoTC) flaw that exchanges cleric's ability to turn/rebuke undead for a feat?
Q. 554
Vampiric touch grants temporary hit points.
Temporary hit points from the same source do not stack, the higher value is used instead.
A. Now, what happens when caster of Vampiric Touch is under his full hit points and manages to get off two vampiric touches? Do normal rules for stacking temporary hit points apply, or the amount below the max hit points is treated as "healed" and only hit points above max are treated as temp?
B. If the former is true, what would happen if a character on negative hit points, but one that has become stable and conscious, casts Vampiric touch, gains temporary hit points, and does not manage to get any healing within 1 hour - does he return to the previous negative value of his hit points total?
C. Oh, and temporary hit points get removed first, right?

A 548 official RAW statement
In Tome of Battle: The Book of Nine Swords, in the Tiger Claw Sudden Leap maneuver description is this:As with any movement, you can attempt a Tumble check to avoid any attacks you provoke with this sudden leap.

A: None of the hit points are permanent, and the normal rules for temporary hit points apply. Who wouldn't they?
B: You can't be conscious when you have negative hit points (without certain feats). If they cast the spell when they were at 0 hit points (which would reduce them to -1 after the casting), and didn't get any healing, then yes, they would revert to -1 (unless, of course, they had been injured in the intervening time), and become unconscious (unless they had some way to maintain conscious, ex: Diehard).
C: Yes. The (semi-)exception is hit points gained from a temporary constitution increase. These are just considered normal hit points, and are lost once the increase is lost. This can render a conscious character unconscious (or even dead).
\/ You are correct.Last edited by martyboy74; 2007-08-28 at 08:21 PM.

Q. 555
Can counter maneuvers (especially Diamond Mind ones that replace various saves with concentration checks) be used while flat-footed and not aware of the danger?

I believe most counters are immediate action and immediate actions cannot be taken while flat-footed.

Re: Simple Q&A (By RAW) III
That's the RAW, certainly. But this brings into light a conundrum that affects whether that rule is enforceable. The rule makes two spells in particular not function as described:
- Feather Fall
- Nerveskitter
Precisely because these spells can't function as designed unless you can take immediate actions while flat-footed, it's common for the rule to be blanketly ignored. Check with your DM.Last edited by Curmudgeon; 2007-08-29 at 10:15 AM.

Re: Simple Q&A (By RAW) III
I think it is sensible to treat those two spells as exceptions, even though they still have use if you are no longer flat-footed, but I do not see any need for completely ignoring the rule though.

Can Cloaker Lord monstrosity from "Monsters of Faerun" cast its wizard spells while howling? The description explicite states that it cannot howl and bite at the same time, and does not mention casting and howling.

Yes, each failed save would deal (1d10)*1.5 Con damage. There's no reason why it wouldn't, particularly since spell resistance applies to the effect.FeytouchedBanana eldritch disciple avatar by...me!

Re: Simple Q&A (By RAW) III
A. 560
I do not have access to Monsters of Faerun at the moment.
I assume that Howling is not a standard action and that this creature is capable of taking standard actions and making other attacks while Howling. (Otherwise the answer should be obvious).
If these spells are spell-like abilities they require no verbal components and thus can be used while utilizing the sound producing organ for other purposes such as Howling.
If these spells are actual spells that are cast like a normal wizard casts spells it would be impossible to meet the verbal component requirement through normal means.
Spells without verbal components does not suffer this restriction.Last edited by Lord Lorac Silvanos; 2007-08-30 at 01:08 AM.

A paladin uses the current charisma modifier when determining her Lay on Hands points available whether modified by temporary conditions, effects, spells, damage etc.

Re: Simple Q&A (By RAW) III
A 563 Addendum
Note that you keep track of uses spent since the beginning of the day, not just uses available. For example, a 5th-level Paladin with a 16 Charisma can heal 15 hp per day via lay on hands. Early in the day, he uses all fifteen points. He has now used 15 out of 15 available points. Later on, he is subject to an eagle's splendor, increasing his daily allotment to 25 points per day. That means he now has used 15 out of 25 points available. During the eagle's splendor, he uses 10 points of healing, emptying his available lay on hands. When the eagle's splendor runs out, he will have used 25 out of 15 available points. He would gain no benefit with regard to lay on hands were he to recieve any future applications of eagle's splendor, as he would then have used 25 out of 25 available points. However, if he were to don a cloak of charisma +6, he will gain five more points of lay on hands, as he will have only used 25 out of 30 available points.
This goes for all abilities with a number of uses per day based upon ability score modifiers, such as a cleric's Turn Undead or ninja's Ki Power.
