Re: Quotes you can build a character off of III: It's a crowd
Be wary of those of green, for they know of each path and place.
Be wary of those of brown, for they know the secrets of the earth and beast.
Be wary of those of yellow, for they know the use of stone and water.
Be wary of those of white, for they know of every cure and disease.
Be wary of those of black, for they know what has been left to be forgotten.
Be wary of the colourless people more than those, for they can learn all these things.
Spoiler: If you want my opinion on the quote.Green: A wanderer and a guide. Probably travels a lot although if it is "each" they would have either been a LOT of places, or maybe they can just read maps. Considering "those", they might have a whole network of wandering cartographers. So a wandering cartographer who can always find a friend.
Brown: It skips over plants, referring to just the earth and animals. Maybe that is a focus thing, like a druid that has just animal spells. Or maybe they have earth magic and a more mundane connection to animals. A hermit who practices magic and talks to animals but then was driven from seclusion.
Yellow: I'm going with "stone and water" being the parts of solids and liquids, so we have a chemist. Or an alchemist. But probably still a more intellectual sort who experiments and learns. Probably has some adventure booms and potions but they might also have some more exotic and technical ingredients as well.
White: Healers seems like the obvious choice and I see no reason to stray from that. Still the "and disease" part suggests a harder edge on this one. Maybe they can make people sick as well as taking sickness away. Or maybe its the opposite way, worked with a lot of diseases. Say during a plague. That might give them a different hard edge. Or why not both. An anger and a sadness. I said that to be dramatic, but now I wonder: anger at what? Was there some "villain" in the plague years?
Black: The group's anti-hero, filled with a darkness but hopefully still on the right path. They seem to be carrying some ancient secrets, likely terrible secrets people don't want to know and would rather not be true. But they are, and this is the one who has to deal with that.
Colourless: The everyman, or innocent caught up in big events, having no particular colour. The "can learn" suggests a bit of a slow start, but building up as the story/campaign continues, which fits a bit with someone caught up in big events. Still wise they a generalist, learning many varied skills.

Re: Quotes you can build a character off of III: It's a crowd
The entire song Digging In The Dirt.
Spoiler
Something in me, dark and sticky
All the time it's getting strong
No way of dealing with this feeling
Can't go on like this too long
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
I told you
I told you
I told you
I told you
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
I told you
I told you
I told you
I told you
Don't talk back
Just drive the car
Shut your mouth
I know what you are
Don't say nothing
Keep your hands on the wheel
Don't try to run
This is for real
Something in me, dark and sticky
Growing bigger every day
It's taking over, it's taking over
I cannot make it go away
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
I told you
I told you

Shut your mouth
I know what you are
Don't say nothing
Keep your hands on the wheel
Don't turn around
This is for real
Digging in the dirt
Stay with me, I need support
I'm digging in the dirt
To find the places I got hurt
Open up the places I got hurt
The more I look, the more I find
As I close on in, I get so blind
I feel it in my head, I feel it in my toes
I feel it in my sex, that's the place it grows
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
I told you

The great flaw of republics and democracies, the reason they always do poorly at the outset of war, is that after they win the previous one the voters never feel like paying to maintain the tools they used to win.

Re: Quotes you can build a character off of III: It's a crowd
Spoiler: "Choose your least favourite finger." "..." "{thorns}Choose or I will guess.{/thorns}"-Tigress Queen
This sounds like someone who you don't want angry at you. Full of a controlled wrath and not a drop of mercy. Controlled wrath approaches justice (in a way), so there is something you could build off there. Still removing even someone is not what we would think of as a cultured solution, so they have some different standards there.Spoiler: "Whoa! Wait! I had memories erased from my brain?" "Um.. Yes?" "COOL!"-PS238
So being involved in cool stuff rates higher than mental stability... a thrill seeker. Probably one who has not been involved in the crazy stuff for very long if they are still excited about something bad happening to them.Spoiler: "Excuse me, sir, [...] but a large predatory bird seems to be plunging down the path to attack you."-The Flying Cloud
"I presume you mean physically."
"Of course sir, it does not appear to be interested in intellectual debate."
This is approaching almost eerie calmness. I mean shouldn't you do something about this? Still they sound very professional, not raising an unnecessary flap about the matter and hopefully competent enough to jump in as soon as it is necessary.Spoiler: "I was wondering how you feel about participating in... questionably-legal-things." "Technically, my existence is illegal." "Oh yeah."-Kiwi Blitz
Sounds like a good justification for a "noble rogue". They aren't a bad person but they can't even exist under the law. Plus the reason they are illegal has a lot of potential, but that really depends on what sort of world the character exists in.Spoiler: "You're like a professional buzzkill."-Kiwi Blitz
I think you could go too far with this, I mean we want to all have fun after all. But sometimes a dose of reality can be ironically fun. It also helps keep people alive.

OooOOOooh! If we can do songs...
Spoiler: Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Red Right HandTake a little walk to the edge of town
Go across the tracks
Where the viaduct looms
Like a bird of doom
As it shifts and cracks
Where secrets lie in the border fires
In the humming wires
Hey man, you know
You're never coming back
Past the square, past the bridge
Past the mills, past the stacks
On a gathering storm comes
A tall handsome man
In a dusty black coat with
A red right hand
He'll wrap you in his arms
Tell you that you've been a good boy
He'll rekindle all the dreams
It took you a lifetime to destroy
He'll reach deep into the hole
Heal your shrinking soul
But there won't be a single thing that you can do
He's a god, he's a man
He's a ghost, he's a guru
They're whispering his name
Through this disappearing land
But hidden in his coat
Is a red right hand
You don't have no money?
He'll get you some
You don't have no car?
He'll get you one
You don't have no self-respect
You feel like an insect
Well don't you worry buddy
Cause here he comes
Through the ghettos and the barrio
And the Bowery and the slum
A shadow is cast wherever he stands
Stacks of green paper in his
Red right hand
You'll see him in your nightmares
You'll see him in your dreams
He'll appear out of nowhere but
He ain't what he seems
You'll see him in your head
On the TV screen
And hey buddy, I'm warning
You to turn it off
He's a ghost, he's a god
He's a man, he's a guru
You're one microscopic cog
In his catastrophic plan
Designed and directed by
His red right hand
More of an NPC of course...Last edited by Corneel; 2018-04-19 at 05:30 PM.

Re: Quotes you can build a character off of III: It's a crowd
Some old RP quotes that defined characters.
“I am NOT here to coddle your little feelings! I’m here to make sure you go home to that wife of yours, be a father to your kids, grow old, and die in bed. Now shut up and stay behind me.” - A very Good is Not Nice Paladin
“He had nothing, and when he came to my home the gods gave him everything I had. Now I have nothing, so maybe if I wander the way he did, the gods will give me something in return.” - A mage who believes in fate.
“My lady, we performing folk, high and low, have a saying for times like these, where one misstep is two too many. We save it for the direst circumstances, so when I entrust it to you, I beg you hold it sacred and close to your heart, only uttering them in times of greatest need. The words are:
Let’s razzle-(censored)-dazzle!” - A royal herald aiding a princess in hiding.

Re: Quotes you can build a character off of III: It's a crowd
Spoiler: "Somehow, I don't think we want you taking responsibility for irradiating a playground..."-PS238
So someone young (playground) with nuclear powers of some kind, either directly or perhaps through made by mad science. Mad scientist actually seems to fit, with causing a bit incident but not out of malice and willing to take responsibility for the fact. Still they are behind something if that is a bad idea. Maybe they have certain expectations of them that are clearly untrue, but appearances must be maintained.Spoiler: "Is this the time for levity?" "I cannot write eulogies for those I don't know, I am not much of a philosopher or chaplain. So yes I think it is."There are many ways to approach sorrow, this person defiantly has one in particular. By itself it isn't much, but shape a seed of optimism and brightness in the dark for your setting and you could make a character from it.Spoiler: "Don't worry about that, we probably won't live that long." "How can you say that with such optimism?"Another seed trait. Besides the strange optimism they appear to be very focused. What is the current problem, focus on that, fix it and move on. Perhaps not the most far-sighted of individuals, but practical on the day-by-day level.Spoiler: "[Y]ou end up trying to bleed out in a tactically useful direction because you're just that hard to keep down."-Trekkin (on Elite Hunter 02)
OK, I just want to make someone who is A) determined and will always try to get back up again and B) has some control over blood so that they could try to bleed out in a tactically useful direction.Spoiler: "Permission to share my humble opinion."-Space Boy
This one, it is full of stuff. It has just a hint of military protocol here, although it might be real or perhaps sarcastic. Because this person is in a mood where they could be sarcastic. The "humble" of course means anything but, at least this time. Their opinion seems to have been shot down before, but this time it seems to be needed. They probably have some issues with their boss, maybe it is just a personality thing, maybe they are not so good at handling they are the more capable one.Spoiler: "Do you know to spread poison you must have poison. And I think we have twice as much as you. Do you realize how little choice I have, how quickly they will turn on me if I am seen out of line? I'm sorry I couldn't save your friends but please, PLEASE, let me save you."A good guy trapped in a bad role. Desperately trying to escape. (Guy is gender neutral here.)

Spoiler: "Sweet! When can you start?" "A few moments ago."-Kiwi Blitz
Effective, efficient and without a moments hesitation. Also they can perform their art, without people noticing. Perhaps it is mystic, perhaps it is purely intellectual, perhaps they can do it on their cell phone.Spoiler: {Glares Disapprovingly} "I think I like that kid."-Kiwi Blitz
I'm going to go with someone who has had an interesting past that has done some things that they know they shouldn't of now, but that was before they learned. So when they see a child going through what they did themselves all those years ago, they don't approve, but they understand. Might be a good mentor or teacher character.Spoiler: "But you see, I'm not a hero." "You saved a princess from an evil wizard." "That was once and it was an accident, shut up!"A cartoon villain who wants to be a villain despite being, almost reflexively, heroic.Spoiler: "Ignorance is not a magical power," the Wizard yelled.-A Practical Guide to Evil
Although this quote isn't actually about them, I sympathize with the wizard. Main one is a character who doesn't over-think things and acts on intuition can get things done when their much chagrined intellectual allies.
This next one is quite a bit longer, but I think it stands on its own so it is going in as is, weird comma placement and grammar and all:

Re: Quotes you can build a character off of III: It's a crowd
I hope that even if no one else is posting there are still people enjoying these quotes. Any maybe even my commentary.
Spoiler: "Steffi's the one who believes in things like heroics. Which is why I need to protect her from people like you."-Kiwi Blitz
A slightly anti-heroic character who works with a much more honestly heroic one. Or perhaps a much more naively heroic one. Either way this character seems to appreciate the ideal even if they don't really believe you can be that kind of hero.Spoiler: "Cheating is one of my talents."-The Far Side of Utopia
They know no shame in regards to cheating. Although cheating usually loses some of its wait if people are looking for it. So why proclaim it? Are they good enough to go it anyways? Are they trying to justify their actions?Spoiler: "Yoink," the Thief said, and stole the sun.-A Practical Guide to Evil
OK, I had previously stated that a thief stealing his life back from death was the gold standard for thievery. This might actually beat that (of course it is a different kind of thing to steal). Points to anyone would can show me a system and build that can have thieves this good.Spoiler: "you never know when you might need that 7.5 V AC adapter with the strange plug for... something"-My Dad
There is got to be some system out there that lets your character have such an eclectic collection of stuff you just might have a compatible plug with a crashed UFO.

Re: Quotes you can build a character off of III: It's a crowd
I'm glad you liked it. Although come to think about it everyone in my family, except maybe one, is like that. We just hold onto different types of things.
Spoiler: "They used to try to catch me. Now they just want to get rid of me."-PS238
Well they have something that people would want to catch. But it seems it (or they) are more trouble than its worth. Notably it is not "they gave up" for some reason the once chased is now chasing. A bit of a back and forth... but one side seems to have the advantage.Spoiler: "Hey Four-Two, do you have a favourite animal or something?" "Do humans count?"-Kiwi Blitz
You want to play an alien (weird, not off-planet) character? How about one who honestly just sees people as more intelligent monkeys?Spoiler: "Productive panic is how we survive."-A Practical Guide to Evil
Staying calm and collected is one way to handle a situation. Embracing fear and letting it drive you forward is another. The trick is to make sure you are going the right direction, but it tends to push people forward quickly.Spoiler: "I take care of my squad, and the pay is great... And we get to blow things up all the time!"-The Far Side of Utopia
Almost an archetypical adventuring party (or leader there of). Close nit, living big, should be pointed at the nearest problem and then as far away from anything important as possible.Spoiler: "He is the kindest, most carrying and understanding human being I have ever met. He is also, without question, carrying enough firepower to kill everyone here."Kind does not mean soft. And it most certainly is not weakness. On a completely different note, it seems to suggest that he is not in a place where one would usually have weapons and he has a lot of (hidden) weapons. Perhaps he is paranoid? Or maybe in a situation where this is paranoia. Not taking some kind invitation at face value for a moment despite the fact if he offered one it would be offered out genuine kindness. I like that one.
And you know what, a bonus quote (paraphrased) from Discworld just for fun: "People who are 7 foot tall and almost half as wide in the shoulder often have uneventful journeys. People jump out from behind rocks and say things like, 'Oh I'm sorry, I thought you were someone else.'"

Spoiler: "Give me one good reason why we should do this." "............" "Cause we got nothing better to do?" "Good point." "I'm sold."-Emergency Exit
Boredom, the greatest of motivators. You could use this for a starting character, they got involved because they have nothing better to do, but I think I already did that, so I am also going to throw out the idea that it is an experienced character who solved their original problem but then found that retirement does not suit them.Spoiler: {Deadpan} "All this pain and suffering from the destruction of the fleshy bits I need to live."-The Far Side of Utopia
A sarcastic immortal.Spoiler: "Say it." "No." "Say it!" "Fine. FOOLISH MORTAL."I think this is a demon that has no interest in playing to type. But for some reason everyone else finds it funny. It might be a non-antsy way to approach a villainous character among the good guys.Spoiler: "You know, in some cultures being shot at is considered a bad thing."-Freelancers
I mean there is some matter of fact and yet a little bit ironic manner in the speaker, but really this quote is about the character (or whole culture?) that considers being shot at a good thing. So much fun it is worth the risk of injury.

Abraham: "They're monsters. Abominations. No other reason is needed."
Raven: "You want an abomination to kill? I am the bastard son of a human and an immortal! If you want so badly to kill an abomination... then try and kill me!"My career choices are limited. I have been shamefully forbidden to serve in any military. I can act directly is the situation involves magic, or is an immediate threat to myself or others. You are a homicidal wizard invading a public school. No one will care if I kill you.

Re: Quotes you can build a character off of III: It's a crowd
El Goonish Shive, I like that comic but I think I've gotten two good quotes you can build a character off of from it, one was from that same scene. Here are some more from more scattered sources.
Spoiler: "I'm going to ask you as nicely as possible to not murder someone in front of the police."-Kiwi Blitz
You could make a character based off of this. But I hope you don't have to, because that means you are having to be the voice of reason to someone who tried to murder someone in front of the police.Spoiler: "Peter once submitted an expense report for a toy remote control plane, a replacement television remote, sixteen feet of barbed wire, a fifteen second ad slot on a local network, two fancy suits, and a mouse trap. I am pretty sure the mouse trap part was him or Query messing with our boss though."-The Far Side of Utopia
There is a couple of things. First they are some sort of agent that works for an agency that you can file for expenses with. Second come up with some... non-conventional plans. Third they are quite willing to make jokes at their superior's expense.Spoiler: "What do we get?" "Uh... nothing." "Hmm. Never held much stock in human materialism... We'll do it, but you owe us."-Cat Legend
... Does anybody read these?
I don't have much to say except I like the idea of difference from the norm, and a culture that puts as much stock (on both sides) into a promise of payment as an actual payment is different from materialistic humans.Spoiler: "Never pick an fight with an old man. He is too old to fight. He'll just kill you."-It was on a board that had a bunch of farm jokes. It felt a little out of place.
An old character for one, could switch to an old woman if you want. An old warrior though, one who should be "too old to fight" but long experience makes them so canny and cunning that they usually win anyways.Spoiler: "Are they actually going to start hitting each other with swords?!" "Well Duncan will stick to knives and Alexander will start throwing lighting bolts around." "That doesn't sound fair." "Duncan is probably going to win."Epic physical characters for the win. We need more ways for a guy to need nothing more than some combat knives to have advantage over lighting bolts (and flight in the original source).
