Default Re: Quotes you can build a character off of III: It's a crowd

Be wary of those of green, for they know of each path and place.
Be wary of those of brown, for they know the secrets of the earth and beast.
Be wary of those of yellow, for they know the use of stone and water.
Be wary of those of white, for they know of every cure and disease.
Be wary of those of black, for they know what has been left to be forgotten.
Be wary of the colourless people more than those, for they can learn all these things.
So I usually do 4-6 quotes and a bit of analysis on each, find the first step or two of a character you could build off it. But this quote was big and mixed so I'm going to try to make a character off of each line.
Spoiler: If you want my opinion on the quote.
    Show
Green: A wanderer and a guide. Probably travels a lot although if it is "each" they would have either been a LOT of places, or maybe they can just read maps. Considering "those", they might have a whole network of wandering cartographers. So a wandering cartographer who can always find a friend.

Brown: It skips over plants, referring to just the earth and animals. Maybe that is a focus thing, like a druid that has just animal spells. Or maybe they have earth magic and a more mundane connection to animals. A hermit who practices magic and talks to animals but then was driven from seclusion.

Yellow: I'm going with "stone and water" being the parts of solids and liquids, so we have a chemist. Or an alchemist. But probably still a more intellectual sort who experiments and learns. Probably has some adventure booms and potions but they might also have some more exotic and technical ingredients as well.

White: Healers seems like the obvious choice and I see no reason to stray from that. Still the "and disease" part suggests a harder edge on this one. Maybe they can make people sick as well as taking sickness away. Or maybe its the opposite way, worked with a lot of diseases. Say during a plague. That might give them a different hard edge. Or why not both. An anger and a sadness. I said that to be dramatic, but now I wonder: anger at what? Was there some "villain" in the plague years?

Black: The group's anti-hero, filled with a darkness but hopefully still on the right path. They seem to be carrying some ancient secrets, likely terrible secrets people don't want to know and would rather not be true. But they are, and this is the one who has to deal with that.

Colourless: The everyman, or innocent caught up in big events, having no particular colour. The "can learn" suggests a bit of a slow start, but building up as the story/campaign continues, which fits a bit with someone caught up in big events. Still wise they a generalist, learning many varied skills.

The great flaw of republics and democracies, the reason they always do poorly at the outset of war, is that after they win the previous one the voters never feel like paying to maintain the tools they used to win.

    Hey man, you know
    You're never coming back
Past the square, past the bridge

    On a gathering storm comes
    A tall handsome man

Some old RP quotes that defined characters.

“I am NOT here to coddle your little feelings! I’m here to make sure you go home to that wife of yours, be a father to your kids, grow old, and die in bed. Now shut up and stay behind me.” - A very Good is Not Nice Paladin

“He had nothing, and when he came to my home the gods gave him everything I had. Now I have nothing, so maybe if I wander the way he did, the gods will give me something in return.” - A mage who believes in fate.

“My lady, we performing folk, high and low, have a saying for times like these, where one misstep is two too many. We save it for the direst circumstances, so when I entrust it to you, I beg you hold it sacred and close to your heart, only uttering them in times of greatest need. The words are:

    Let’s razzle-(censored)-dazzle!” - A royal herald aiding a princess in hiding.

Another seed trait. Besides the strange optimism they appear to be very focused. What is the current problem, focus on that, fix it and move on. Perhaps not the most far-sighted of individuals, but practical on the day-by-day level.

This one, it is full of stuff. It has just a hint of military protocol here, although it might be real or perhaps sarcastic. Because this person is in a mood where they could be sarcastic. The "humble" of course means anything but, at least this time. Their opinion seems to have been shot down before, but this time it seems to be needed. They probably have some issues with their boss, maybe it is just a personality thing, maybe they are not so good at handling they are the more capable one.
Spoiler: "Do you know to spread poison you must have poison. And I think we have twice as much as you. Do you realize how little choice I have, how quickly they will turn on me if I am seen out of line? I'm sorry I couldn't save your friends but please, PLEASE, let me save you."

Our names will not be known,

So pick up your sword, boy
    Here they come again
And down here in the mud,
It's us who holds the line.

    The Princes take the Vales
The Tyrant is at the Gate
    Our crops whither and fail,
    The enemy's host is great.

So pick up your sword, boy
    Here they come again
And down here in the mud,
It's us who holds the line.

Man the walls, bare the steel,
Hoist the banner, raise the shield
A free man's death they cannot steal
When we meet them on the field.

So pick up your sword, boy
    Here they come again
And down here in the mud,
IT'S US WHO HOLDS THE LINE.

I hope that even if no one else is posting there are still people enjoying these quotes. Any maybe even my commentary.
Spoiler: "Steffi's the one who believes in things like heroics. Which is why I need to protect her from people like you."
    Show
    -Kiwi Blitz

A slightly anti-heroic character who works with a much more honestly heroic one. Or perhaps a much more naively heroic one. Either way this character seems to appreciate the ideal even if they don't really believe you can be that kind of hero.
Spoiler: "Cheating is one of my talents."

They know no shame in regards to cheating. Although cheating usually loses some of its wait if people are looking for it. So why proclaim it? Are they good enough to go it anyways? Are they trying to justify their actions?

OK, I had previously stated that a thief stealing his life back from death was the gold standard for thievery. This might actually beat that (of course it is a different kind of thing to steal). Points to anyone would can show me a system and build that can have thieves this good.

I liked the last one. Though I think the attitude within is just a part of essential universal Dad-dom.

    Anyway, quotes:

Mr. Pump: 'No, You Have Not. But You Have Stolen, Embezzled, Defrauded And Swindled Without Discrimination, Mr Lipvig. You Have Ruined Businesses And. Destroyed Jobs. I always liked this lecture (adapted rather well here ) as a quote for a Lawful character, and as a put-down to "loveable rogue" types.

This thread has had something of a Pratchett deficiency for quite a few pages now, so some more from Discworld:

"I thought I was just naturally lucky," said Rincewind. He thought about what he'd just said. "I must have been crazy."

"Haven't you noticed that by running away you end up in more trouble?"
"Yes, but, you see, you can run away from that, too. That's the beauty of the system. Dead is only for once, but running away is for ever."

It took him several minutes to understand any new idea put to him, and this is a very valuable trait in a leader, because anything anyone is still trying to explain to you after two minutes is probably important and anything they give up after a mere minute or so is almost certainly something they shouldn’t have been bothering you with in the first place.

Well they have something that people would want to catch. But it seems it (or they) are more trouble than its worth. Notably it is not "they gave up" for some reason the once chased is now chasing. A bit of a back and forth... but one side seems to have the advantage.

Kind does not mean soft. And it most certainly is not weakness. On a completely different note, it seems to suggest that he is not in a place where one would usually have weapons and he has a lot of (hidden) weapons. Perhaps he is paranoid? Or maybe in a situation where this is paranoia. Not taking some kind invitation at face value for a moment despite the fact if he offered one it would be offered out genuine kindness. I like that one.

And you know what, a bonus quote (paraphrased) from Discworld just for fun: "People who are 7 foot tall and almost half as wide in the shoulder often have uneventful journeys. People jump out from behind rocks and say things like, 'Oh I'm sorry, I thought you were someone else.'"

Boredom, the greatest of motivators. You could use this for a starting character, they got involved because they have nothing better to do, but I think I already did that, so I am also going to throw out the idea that it is an experienced character who solved their original problem but then found that retirement does not suit them.

I mean there is some matter of fact and yet a little bit ironic manner in the speaker, but really this quote is about the character (or whole culture?) that considers being shot at a good thing. So much fun it is worth the risk of injury.

You want to know who I am? I'm a fisherman and a pirate. A smuggler and a mercenary. A knight and a knave. I murder for fun, drink for sport, stab demons for glory, and rescue children to salve my conscience. Occasionally I turn into a wolf when I feel like tearing something apart. I make pacts with Hinterlords, war on monsters, and bloody messes out of idiots like you who pull knives on me before I finish my beer. I'll give you a head start, you have until this bottle is empty. Start running.

El Goonish Shive, I like that comic but I think I've gotten two good quotes you can build a character off of from it, one was from that same scene. Here are some more from more scattered sources.

Spoiler: "I'm going to ask you as nicely as possible to not murder someone in front of the police."
    Show
    -Kiwi Blitz

You could make a character based off of this. But I hope you don't have to, because that means you are having to be the voice of reason to someone who tried to murder someone in front of the police.
Spoiler: "Peter once submitted an expense report for a toy remote control plane, a replacement television remote, sixteen feet of barbed wire, a fifteen second ad slot on a local network, two fancy suits, and a mouse trap. I am pretty sure the mouse trap part was him or Query messing with our boss though."
    Show
    -The Far Side of Utopia

There is a couple of things. First they are some sort of agent that works for an agency that you can file for expenses with. Second come up with some... non-conventional plans. Third they are quite willing to make jokes at their superior's expense.
Spoiler: "What do we get?" "Uh... nothing." "Hmm. Never held much stock in human materialism... We'll do it, but you owe us."
    Show
    -Cat Legend

    ... Does anybody read these?

I don't have much to say except I like the idea of difference from the norm, and a culture that puts as much stock (on both sides) into a promise of payment as an actual payment is different from materialistic humans.
Spoiler: "Never pick an fight with an old man. He is too old to fight. He'll just kill you."
    Show
-It was on a board that had a bunch of farm jokes. It felt a little out of place.

An old character for one, could switch to an old woman if you want. An old warrior though, one who should be "too old to fight" but long experience makes them so canny and cunning that they usually win anyways.
Spoiler: "Are they actually going to start hitting each other with swords?!" "Well Duncan will stick to knives and Alexander will start throwing lighting bolts around." "That doesn't sound fair." "Duncan is probably going to win."
    Show
Epic physical characters for the win. We need more ways for a guy to need nothing more than some combat knives to have advantage over lighting bolts (and flight in the original source).

Although we are not now that strength which in old days moved earth and heaven, that which we are we are. One equal temper of heroic hearts made weak by time and fate, but strong in will. To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
