I interpreted that as gallows humour. Like Mr. Politician is famous for having people executed (possibly even extra-judicially), and the whole reason he's at the convention is to repair the PR damage that such corruption and brutality causes. So having it pointed out and made fun of in this way is embarrassing to him.

Don't know if that's what was originally intended...

Yours is the only one I can't see. I hit reply and copied the address into my browser and got a message saying I don't have permission to view the image. Removing the s from https let me see it, but doing that in the quote didn't.

I believe the implied situation is asking if the whole party is certain they want to take it (such as to have a level 1 dread necromancer break the game with infinite healing), while ignoring the ramifications of the obvious unnerving affect on their appearance that would get them lynched in any polite society, because they're assuming they can somehow cover it up.
