gianttip.com never lead to the google search to giantitp.com. also www. was mandatory. I remember the days when browsers automatically added http:// because Safari and Navigator did not!

Please. I remember playing the built in games on AOL as one of my only sources of entertainment. (Also, to fix the imgur thing, you need to go to about:config in firefox, change that value to 0. Imgur is apparently blocking content requests using the referrer, or the lazy way, basically.)

There are ways to modify your browser to still see them, that i posted a bit ago.... but bah.

Doing so breaks newgrounds for me, as it won't let me rate content because it thinks I'm a bot.

Happened a month or three ago, they're doing that because we use enough avatars and images hosted on imgur that we're taking up a noticeable amount of their bandwidth—cost that they're paying for but getting no benefit for, as few of the images link to imgur for increased revenue-generating traffic.

It's the same reason why direct linking from Photobucket and such stopped working years ago, though Imgur is taking the saner approach of not just blanket preventing image linking everywhere.

I have to believe that somewhere out there, there are people intelligent enough to realize that deliberately alienating your user base is a good way to lose that user base.

The trick is to find ways to monetize enough that you can afford the free base. Freemium models rely on their free service bringing in enough business that the paid customers are drawn to them to share. This is easier when interaction within the user-base is a draw. I'm not sure that's a thing for an image-hosting site.
