    The harp twangs indignantly when Cerise accuses it of not being useful. Then she grabs it and runs! Well, first she tumbles skillfully past the wrackspawns. Then she runs.


    The wrackspawns all charge her! But they miss!


    Cerise Withdraws! She startles a family of rats, who scatter!


    The wrackspawns give chase, but due to Cerise's skillful positioning of walls, none have the angle to charge. Also, they're slower than Cerise is.


    Cerise double moves right up to the entrance to the mushroom kingdom! The myconid guards beyond look mildly alarmed.


    The myconids are expecting... well, the party with the harp, but they see the harp and they spew spores at Cerise and communicate telepathically with her. She hastily thinks at them that she's running for her life, and they use their telepathic spore communication dealy to communicate to the pit trap not to open under her and the shrieker mushrooms not to yell at her.


    Cerise runs into the safety of the mushroom kingdom!


    The wrackspawns pursue!


    Cerise catches her breath.


    The wrackspawns pursue!


    The myconids see the wrackspawns at the gate, and nod their mushroomy caps, recognizing that these demony things are bad news.


    The wrackspawns, seeing even more prey, enter the threshold of the mushroom kingdom -- and the floor opens out from under them. One of the wrackspawns jumps back, the other two fall 20' into a deep pool of (diluted but still dangerous) acid. The wrackspawns shriek and gibber in pain as their flesh melts off (unlike true demons, they are not immune to acid).


    Cerise watches this scene.


    Two of the wrackspawns attempt to climb up the sheer walls of the pit trap, and fail. They fall down, are still immersed, and soon stop screaming as they die of acid.

    The remaining wrackspawn attempts to leap the pit to get at Cerise and the myconids!

    It makes the jump!


    But two of the myconids bull rush it into the pit.


    The wrackspawn successfully climbs up out of the pit... on the far side!


    The wrackspawns make ready to volleyball-spike the wrackspawn back into the pit should it attempt the jump again.


    The wrackspawn attempts the jump again! But this time it does not make the distance (the myconid guards don't even have to spike it), and falls in the acid, and, screaming, dies.


    Doltan, Cerise, Matters, and Dacianne gain 800XP each!

    The harp plays a triumphan fanfare, then proceeds into providing ambient music again.

    The myconids close up the pit trap, and two of them and Cerise go out to recover her companions.

    Then the guards and Cerise proceed south to the Myconid Sovereign's chamber (again, too lazy to map in all the farms in between, but the location of the throne chamber on the map is accurate to where you've explored), where the guards dump Matters, Doltan, and Dacianne and leave Cerise.

    The Myconid Sovereign hits them all with communication spores, and is delighted at the harp! He thinks at Cerise, "Such lovely music, even better than I had imagined!"

    Then he notices her companions. Gesturing to them, "They're not supposed to be like that, yes?"

    Upon being told that no, they're not supposed to be like that, the mushroom king gets up out of his throne, dips ladles into one of his bubbling cauldrons, and carefully ladles liquid into their faces. Matters takes like twice as much liquid. But eventually, everyone is conscious at 1hp! Matters's aura soon has everyone up to half max health from there.

    Then the mushroom king takes the harp and sets it among his possessions, where he listens to it for a minute and Is Pleased.

    Thinking at everybody, "I would now be happy to have a relationship of friendship with the Crown of Gus. You may go back and tell this Crown as much. Unless you would like to have a rest in our fields before proceeding." Myconids do not sleep, but sometimes they rest when they need to, so he understands the concept.

    Everyone gains 750XP additional for completing the harp quest! By my calculations, Matters and Dacianne level up to 5!

    Cerise puts a delicate hand on her hip and sighs from the depths of her elven frame. It had been a long day. "Well," she begins, eyeing her ragged companions. "that was a good time, no?" Her elven accent spots her words, muddling the sarcasm, but not eradicating it.

    "I vote we take a rest, deliver some form of note to the crown, find another teammate." She yawns. "Take a rest..." she repeats. "Wash my poor boots..." a frown creeps across her face. "Reclaim-" she yoinks her duelist's cape back from the unhelpful harp. "my cape!"

    She makes a bow to the harp, as it did make a good short-lived companion.
    If purple is evil, bold gray is lawful good.

    Standing up, still woozy, the warrior partially bows, and unceremoniously puts a hand on his lower back.

    *I guess this is what growing old must feel like. Bones aching, unable to move your body like you'd want to...*

    The pain subsides, and he gets up with his usual grin.

    "Thank you for bringing us back from the brink, Your Majesty. These are great news indeed. These caves are quite perilous, but your folk are brave and well prepared.

    We have had little interactions with them, but what little we know of the people living here gives us hope this agreement will hold and bring great good to both sides."


    He then starts tapping his feet a bit, seemingly nervous, or at the very least agitated.

    "I wouldn't dare abuse your hospitality, but some of us, myself especially, have been poisoned to a point that's hard to endure. If you could help us somehow recover faster than simple rest would allow, that would be much appreciated. I do not know exactly how deep the poison has rooted in my companion's muscles, but without any aid, I would probably need a full week to recover, and would rather deliver the news to the Crown faster than not."

    With that final remark, Doltan takes a step back, looking at his fellow adventurers and anticipating whether they have something to add.

    The mushroom king ponders. It takes some explaining before he comprehends the concept of poison ("Oh, I get it, it's like what happens to rats when they chew on the orange bleedy mushrooms!"), and then he roots around in his storeroom for a minute, before returning with four speckled yellow potions. "This is all I have that might help."

    The 4 potions, which the myconid sovereign hands over freely, are lesser restoration (which restores 1d4 points of damage to a single ability score when quaffed).

    The templeforged felt dejected. Sure, they managed to bring back the harp. But it felt like a hollow victory considering they were all nearly destroyed. Again.

    "Glad to have been of service. We'd require some proof to bring back to the Crown, though. Something symbolic.And if we rest, I must insist going back to the cave entrance and telling the rafters and Taric that we are alright.

    Is woken back up, and makes all sorts of upset sounds. She is sad to lose the harp, but happy their mission is fulfilled. But, poor harp, being a possession and no longer their dear friend.

    She doesn't have much to add, feeling rather ashamed that she was so injured and not sure what happened. It appears, based on injury level, that Cerise had saved them. "Thank you for saving us."

    She mentions to the others, I think.. our tactics are off. We need to need to focus on one enemy,
    instead of all of them. And I think I need to be more helpful to others.. in general.

    "This was a rather hard decision. Taking them down one at a time would have been a tactical decision, but might also have left our flanks open. I couldn't take the attacks of more than one of these at a time, not in my paralyzed and armorless state, so giving them a chance to flank us meant our demise."

    He then smiles sheepishly.

    "I'm... I'm glad you're alright."

    Then, turning towards the rest of the group

    "Nobody's saying anything, so here's my idea: we're going to take up the Sovereign's offer of hospitality and stay here for one more day, fully resting and no hard activity besides learning how they live their day to day lives, as that much might help us if we're to describe what we've seen and how we managed to befriend them once we go back.

    Unless anyone objects, I intend to drink two of those potions to remove part of the paralysis. The dose of poison I suffered will require at least that much. If anyone needs some poison gotten rid of, they were given to us with knowledge that this is their intended use, and though these might have some market value, I'd feel like I would be partially betraying the Sovereign's trust if I were to profit off his generosity."

    The Myconid Sovereign nods about something to bring back to the Crown. He ponders. Then he thinks to the party, "The youngest of my Circle Leaders shall join you to speak for me before the Crown." The party gathers that a Circle Leader is the next rank down from the Sovereign.

    The party is shown to a nice plot of well-fertilized dirt with nothing growing from it yet. The perfect napping place for a mushroom.

    Matters is escorted to the tunnel entrance, where she finds Taric and the cart and the mule waiting but the raft long gone. Apparently the rafters were not willing to stay overnight. It'll be a walk home.

    Matters returns to consult with the myconids, and it transpires that they happen to know a secret way through the mountain to the south, which would probably be easier than hacking through brush overland to get back to Endeesy -- but it passes through the Cave of Burning, which the myconid Circle Leader chosen to accompany them is extremely hesitant to do. Because of all the fire. On the other hand, the myconids aren't too fond of the sun, either, and can therefore quite possibly be persuaded.

    Anyhow, rest time! Matters successfully provides long-term care to Doltan and Cerise, but not to Dacianne. So Dacianne regains her HD in HP and 1 point from each depleted ability score, as normal for rest, and Doltan and Cerise regain double their HD in HP and 2 points from each depleted ability score.

    So there are three choices: south through the Cave of Burning and then through the wilderness to Endeesy from there; southwest through the wilderness overland from the Stank Cave and then to Endeesy; or northwest through the wilderness to Ironrock, and then a long probably couple-day journey by road (which has the benefit of being much easier going) through the villages and towns all the way to the east coast to get around back to Riverford and then to Endeesy.

    She nods to Doltan. I'm not much of a tactician, I just am tired of being eaten alive, and have to think its us not them. Or maybe it is them. Or us. or them. She shrugs, and has little else to say other than doing what the group wants.

    Woo, they get some fungi to join them at the Crown.

    She would appreciate Matters trying, then shock herself to life with the healing wand and pass it to the others. She's feeling better, if still really weak.

    With three choices before them, she suggests the third.

    Doltan presses the gems on his magical belt, and shares some healing around. With that done, he ponders about their current situation.

    "I agree with Dacianne here. I grow tired of these caves, and a place called the Cave of Burning sounds like some other demon-infested lair. If our previous experience is worth anything, walking by the river means we would probably encounter wandering ogres again. Then again, our only walk by the road had us meet a dragon, though one would hope these are rarer occurrences.

    The journey will be far longer if we take the road, but we're no longer just an adventuring party, but de facto bodyguards to a dignitary. Taking the safer-looking - though not quite safe - route sounds more responsible.

    I'm also not fond of our group still missing a member, and taking the longer journey means it will take longer to remedy."


    He then turns to their charge, introduces the group and continues, thinking at him.

    "We are to escort you. Your input is the most valuable here, and we will not take a path you would not tread. Two of us so far think it would be best to take the long road."

    "I too will insist on going aboveground. These tunnel systems are filled with dangers. We could buy a tarp or a tent and put it over the cart if sunlight is too bothersome."

    So, using their belts, everybody's pretty much back to full hp after the rest. The myconids helpfully offer to shovel dirt onto the party for them, but the party graciously declines.

    Doltan seems to want to rest a full 24 hours to recover more of his ability damage. The myconids prove hospitable enough to let them have the little plot of soil for that long, so the party heals twice as much ability damage as I indicated before, leaving Dacianne at 1 strength damage and 0 dex damage, and Doltan at 2 dex damage.

    The Circle Leader nods his bulbous head, "Yes, over land is best, despite the sun." With at least three party members and the myconid agreed, the party will head the longest but least dangerous way! (Actually, I wonder if going north and west to Noodleton first would be shorter... 70 miles that way, 40 miles the other way, no, around the east through Fourside and Riverford is much faster.)

    The myconids show the party to a quicker way out of the Stank Cave, from the east of their lands, north to the entrance, about half the distance from the west entrance to their lands.

    There are some funguses on the way out, but the circle leader hits them with spores and they let the party go quietly.

    The myconid circle leader shambles more slowly than the party, and at first they have to cut through wilderness to Ironrock, so the going is slow. But they only have to cross very shallow and narrow brooks that feed eventually into the Bitey River, so at least that's okay.


    Gus

    First, four miles northeast through the high grass, stunted trees, underbrush, and various difficult terrains of the wilderness, towards Ironrock!

    But the party manages to hack their way through to Ironrock with little in the way of hostile encounters!


    Then the party heads ESE towards Suzanne's Inn!

    A mile or two into this portion of the trip, they do encounter a thing!



    But the pegasus immediately flies away when approached by the party.


    And then they reach Suzanne's Inn, and it's onwards on a longer trek towards Fourside!


    But a few miles into this trip, a dark shadow passes briefly over the party, and they look up, and they see a dragon of indeterminate size and indeterminate color, backlit by the sun!

    Doltan and the myconid peer at the creature, and eventually conclude that it's red (and everyone knows dragons who are a color are bad and dragons who are a metal are good and dragons who are a gem are neutral) and Large.


    The myconid circle leader goes first, followed by the dragon. A brief conversation confirms the myconid's suspicion that this dragon is probably hostile, so he readies an attack in case it comes close enough.


    The red dragon swoops in close to breathe on the party --

    and the myconid hits it with a spew of spores, and the dragon coughs and becomes Passive.


    The rest of the party readies attacks, but the dragon, unable to attack, flaps at half speed away into the distance, seeking easier prey.


    Doltan and Cerise gain 320xp each, Matters and Dacianne gain 300 xp each. By my calculations, Cerise levels up to 5!


    And then the party proceeds to Fourside, at which time night has fallen so they have a rest at the inn.

    Matters successfully tends to Doltan overnight, so by the time morning comes, all of everybody's ability damage is restored.


    In the morning in Fourside, Yellow Ebka (joy, success, beginnings) is in the Crucible (science, engineering).

    The party will proceed next post!

    And then it is south to the village of X! No encounters in the five miles there.


    And then it's WSW to the town of Riverford and the bridge over the Bitey River, and no encounters in the sevenish miles there.


    It's fifteen miles from Riverford to Endeesy, and the party can cover about sixteen miles in a day, so it's either rest in Riverford or be travelling through the dangerous night, so the party at this point takes another night of rest.


    In the morning, now blue Saquel (sadness, failure) is in the Crucible (science, engineering), so the party missed their chance to do Science while the stars were in place for it.


    Then the party heads west! The most interesting thing on the trip to the crossroads south of Doublebridge is a red fox, which runs away into the corn when it spots the party.


    It is the middle of the day, so they don't have the nocturnal encounter they might have had past the crossroads.


    And then, as they heave within sight of the smog above the Eastside of Endeesy, they are set upon by three growling battle-scarred big wolves with frost white fur and glowing blue eyes!

    Dack knows that these are not winter wolves, they are devil dogs, which might be a cross between winter wolves and wild dogs.

    She is content to rest for a day, and tries to amuse herself and others with some card tricks, singing songs (to herself if no one else is interested), and random fidgeting. She spends an odd amount of time talking to herself about hair colors and styles.

    Then it is off!

    She shambles with the mushrooms, not wanting to outpace them and be rude. The pegasus is ooo'd and awed over. Then, there is a dragon.. she chambers her crossbow, she tries to not quiver in fear but fails.. but then.. it is off... many thanks are given to their entourage.

    An inn? AN INN! She immediately pays for a bath, and disappears. So much scrubbing, so much scrubbing of herself and clothing.

    The walk is nice, if not long. Another night of rest, another long bath. No more stinky smells for her!

    But, just before arriving. She calls out what they are to the party.

    Doltan goes after the northern one, she fire upon the southern one, so that matters and Cerise can take the center one.

    Before leaving the caves, Matters makes sure to recover her old shield from where it was discarded so long ago.

    If there were any more lesser restoration brews left, she'd use one to recover from the Intelligence draining trap. Otherwise, she'd possibly recover 1 point in Riverford ?

    As Eastside is in view, they are beset by wolves ! "I'm starting to see a pattern here, you guys noticed it too, right ? I'm not going crazy, right ? Anyway, have at thee mongrels !" She steps in front of Dacianne in case a wolf decides to attack the rearguard.

    Meanwhile, In The Past, At Riverford

    The party visited the Haemogoblin and told him about the wondrous business opportunities to be found within the Stank Cave! He nodded, enthusiastic about the prospect of teaming up with a beholder.


    Meanwhile, In the Present, Gus, facing the Devil Dogs

    Doltan charges battle-leader-ly, and smacks the devil dog with great force! It whines.


    The southern devil dog (#3) charges Doltan! But it completely misses him.


    Dacianne shoots a shooting at the southern (#3) devil dog, and hits it! It grunts.


    The middle devil dog (#2) steps to Doltan and attacks him! It, too, completely misses him!


    Cerise charges the devil dog she can charge! She pierces the creature right near where Dacianne shot it!

    HP = Half max, + 1. Or, put another way: average, rounded up. Or, put a third way: d4 = 3, d6 = 4, d8 = 5, d10 = 6, d12 = 7.



    The last, northern, devil dog (#1) attacks Doltan (electing to roll a different die than the one that gave its companions two natural 1s in a row)! And it manages to just barely bite Doltan! Doltan takes 8 damage, reduced to 4 by his DR, and 4 goes into his DD pool.


    The myconid circle leader spews spores at the second devil dog! It hits, but the dog resists the hallucinatory effect!


    Matters steps to protect Dacianne, switches auras, challenges the wolves that are trying to chew on Doltan, and makes ready to strike one if it answers the challenge!

    Doltan laughs as the dog manages to bite him.

    "Ah ha! Fighting in the great outdoors, nothing better to heal old creaking bones! ...or recently-poisoned ones, anyways. Once I get a decent set of armor back, these won't pose much of a threat."

    He whirls his blade around and attempts to drive it down with the earth's mighty strength into the one Cerise just hit, as it'll be the only one everyone will be able to hit without trouble.

    Doltan brings down the hammer upon devil dog #3, striking it with great vigor and justice! It whines, badly injured.


    Devil dog 3 barks and flees, Withdrawing, hopping the fence and hastening into the corn.


    Dacianne, her favored target gone, pulls out her daggers and runs in, getting to a place where she can flank #2 soon depending on the movements of the rest of the party. She stabs at it, but misses!


    Devil dog 2 retaliates against Dacianne, biting at her! But she avoids its jaws!


    Cerise steps into the gap to also stab #2! She hits it precisely, injuring it!


    Devil dog 1 bites at Doltan again! It hits him! Doltan takes 6 damage, reduced to 2 by DR, goes into DD!


    The myconid circle leader shoots spores at #1! But it misses!


    Matters can provoke! and can flank (against #2) with Doltan! and indeed has to do the former to do the latter! So she does, the dog misses her, and she is now free to strike it with her full bonus and flanking and... a natural 1 doesn't hit no matter what.

    He drives his sword down once again, striking at a nearby dog. He then takes a step back to allow his allies better positioning.

    Doltan misses the devil dog! Then he steps east, then his DD pool eats his THP.


    Devil dog 3 runs all the way away.


    Dacianne completely misses a devil dog!


    Devil dog 2 bites at... Dacianne! A critical threat! Which just barely does not confirm! Dacianne takes 6 damage!


    Cerise does the thing! Impaling a devil dog with great vigor and gusto!


    Devil dog 1 steps to bite Matters! But she deflects its blow!


    The myconid circle leader decides not to use up all his daily spores, and wades into melee! He punches at dog #2 over Cerise's head! But the devil dog is unharmed!


    Matters gives devil dog #2 a mighty whack! It looks deeply unhappy, and begins to whine and seeks to flee.
