"**** this game," Gerric growled as he lost another round of Mastery. The rules didn't make sense. It was supposed to be a game, why was everything so complicated? You know what was a fun game? Kubb. You threw sticks. Simple. Easy to learn. What was this ****? He started to frown as Kate attempted to explain the rules to him... again. Eventually Kate gave up trying to teach them. Gerric looked around the group, shrugged and left. Not returning for some hours later.

Later, when the group had rejoined and began discussing the options before them, Gerric already had his mind set on what should be their course. Even as the others began to argue.

"People die every day. Just 'cause one murderer is dumb enough to make a pattern o' his killin's don't really change that. It also don't seem like our kinda problem. What we gonna do? Dress Kate up as bait and see if someone tries to kill her? We got more a chance o' catchin' those 'Silent' bastards we're tryin' to avoid. On the other hand, we got one o' the key folk in that Dark One **** waitin' for us to take him. We get to cross another off the list o' bastards that gotta die, and we can maybe get some more information on the enemy. That could help us in the long run. Far more than whether or not a few more people wind up dead."

The two stopped bickering, or at least lowered their voices, to listen to the others. "Well, there you have it, looks like we're hunting traitor" Ruark relaxed at the notion, Urukubarr did not. Frustrated, Uruk tried to bargain, "I will scout alone, send me, please. Not need to hunt one puny man. I know of islands." Urukubarr tapped his forehead, referring to the knowledge he already had on the islands, surely this would help him scout more effectively.

"Alone?! Uruk, you can't scout three islands by yourself. Splitting up like that would invite disaster. Besides, the 'puny man' won't be alone. We'll no doubt have to contend with his retainers. Then, once we've captured Alaric, all of us will go on the scouting mission."

Kate knew that yielding here wouldn't solve anything. If she sided with Urukubarr, then Gerric (and possibly others) would object just as strongly. The majority had decided on a course of action. Honouring that support was the right decision...

...Not that that made disappointing a friend any easier. Poor Uruk.

Urukubarr opened his mouth to continue arguing, but all he could manage was a frustrated sigh. Arguing with Ruark was bad enough, he decided to quit before he made a fool of himself. He understood, but didn't' like it by a long shot. Kate had led them fairly and wisely thus far, Uruk tried to keep that in mind. "I should prepare wagon and horses..." Uruk finished his meal and stood up to leave, the work would distract him from the disappointment.

Decision made, Nazir happily goes back to crafting his new bow. "We should let Unaric know on our way out of the city. Maybe someone there can tell us of known details of Alaric, his home, and possible defenses? Are we headed for a manor or do we end up trying to storm a small castle? A map would be useful too. Next morning...

Urukubarr lead the horses out, waiting for Kate to don her armour. This morning the streets were empty, but the air was clean and smelled of seat. Urukubarr took a large breath, and looked back, to the warehouse. Ruark stood there, packing the rations. This would be the first time they would be separated and it brought Urukubarr no good feelings. But he swore, and Ruark did the same.

Gerric came outside, yawning, his new axe hung on his belt. He looked eager to leave the city - and obviously was looking forward to spending some time fighting visible opponents - as opposed to fighting with intrigues. He also wore his new clothes - and took a bath. But underneath that, it was still the same Gerric - and it showed. He quickly glanced up and down the street, and with raider's discipline he prepared his horse, without a word and checked his bearings.

Kate stepped outside, in her armor. At home, she was used to a squire preparing her steed - but not anymore. At least not yet. Her sword was sharpened, her armour cleaned and her horse longed for road.

Nazir was the last one to leave the warehouse. He looked rather serious - and lost in thoughts. But he also seemed to lighten up as soon as he breathed the fresh air.

They left by the Southern gate, hiding their faces from the sleepy guards.

And suddenly, there was open road in front of them.

    Four Days Later

The travel was uneventful - almost boring. Since they entered the forests, they met only few woodsmen, who tried to avoid them. During the four days, they reviewed what Gregor told them - the information he found about lord Alaric's manor.

    Spoiler: Gregor's Intelligence Report
    Show

    • Alaric has a large manorhouse, atop a cliff, overlooking his village and the sea
    • people say his manor has secret entrances - from the sea as well as from the local cementery
    • his villagers are rather content with his leadership, and a bit xenophobic - unwelcoming
    • he has four knights and their retinue at his disposal, as well as a company of mercenaries
    • his manor has only one outer wall and gatehouse - he usually needs no more due to the steep cliff
    • there is an old stone circle just below the cliff, near the old cementery
    • lord Alaric keeps a large chest in his bedroom; they say it's full of golden coins
    • Alaric himself does not fight - but his knights are very skilled with weapons

It was the fourth day. In the afternoon, an hour before dawn. They were just slowly riding down the road, along the forest, looking for a place to camp, when suddenly Nazir returned to the group from his scouting. Nazir did so all the time - but this time it was different. He was in a hurry...

...and signalled that someone was coming.

Roll PER/TN7 multiply successes by 100. That's the distance from which you spotted them in yards.

"Them" are two groups. One is on foot, around 15 people. Second one seems like horsemen - not many, but further away (double the distance).

    Back at the warehouse

Nazir knew the group would be on the road again soon. He spent some of his free time on his archery exercises, but spent most of on making a new bow. At first he worked on getting used to his new bowyer tools. The tools were higher quality than he had ever seen but after testing them out on scrap wood he quickly made sense of them. The halfling, with hand-eye coordination greater than most could even imagine possible, then began applying the new tools to the work in progress that he had started way back at Mad Dog's Inn. He had been lucky to find a tree of a good type and right shape to use as a bow blank. Back then all he had was a dagger and a hatchet. To make up for it he had taken his time and got the roughing work done. Now with the excellent scraper and files he took to the fine work. Over a couple of days Nazir's focus became pure. The halfling used both his human and elven eyesight to see which spot to work on next. He found himself using crafting techniques he hadn't learned before, instinctively. Instead of being puzzled he embraced it.

After dinner the night before heading to Ravenstone, Nazir took to the final touches of the bow. He was proud and amazed at the result so far. It was time. He strung the bow and lightly pulled to test it. With no unexpected sounds or feels he pulled moderately then fully. It bent beautifully. Even at full draw Nazir felt the bow had more to give if only its user was stronger. He slowly released the tension then headed over to his homemade archery range with some arrows. The indoor range couldn't test the range of a proper longbow but close range precision was more critical when it came to supporting the group while they were in melee. He aimed at dead center of the far target and loosed the arrow. It flew perfectly and hit center of the mark. He fired another, aimed inches to the side of the first shot and that is where the arrow hit. Several more arrows were fired downrange. Nazir was ecstatic. He fired the last arrow of the bunch. As it hit Nazir let out with an excited "YES!" Moving to gather the arrows, he and any others who looked saw the fired arrows made a symbol of some kind. Nazir couldn't place it but it seemed like it he should know it.

Nazir held up the bow and studied it. In his head he heard one word. Excelsior

    Four Days Later

The trade road to Ravenstone sloped upward gradually. Up ahead the road curved to the right a bit to avoid the rocky top of the hill. Knowing it would be a better view Nazir took to the woods on the left side of the road and happily scurried through them to the lightly wooded crest between the hilltop and the road's highest point. Keeping in cover he looked out beyond the small hill. He saw that after the road crested it curved back to continue in the same direction it had pointed to before. He was surprised how close a large group of people were. ...Farmers? With whole families and property? In a hurry. Why.... that's why. Five, six horsemen gaining on them. Time to go.

Nazir hurried back down then back to the road once he wouldn't be seen by those approaching. On the road, he jogged back to the party who was approaching him still.

"Beyond the hilltop there are two groups coming. First looks like farmers and their families on foot and mules trying to hurry along. Further back are 6 horsemen who are catching up to the farmers. Armed and armored, but not heavily. Bandits? Either way, they'll reach the top around the same time, and within minutes." Physically he strings Excelsior while mentally planning out possible tactics.

Gerric walked around the city, or as far as he could get the day before they left. He would need to know the walls, where they were thin, where each gate was positioned, where the guards were posted. Which buildings were too close.

A few homes would need to be knocked down, to make room for a moving army. There were spots where a palisade would need to be constructed. So much work to do, to make sure this stinking ****hole of a city stay free.

On his way back he bought some cloths. He tried to find something fashionable. He really did. But the clothing didn't feel right. Silk and velvet from foreign lands were too slick, like he was wearing slime or nothing. Eventually he found something cheap. Some undyed cloth and shoes that fit. They would do. If the noble buggers look down their nose at him for not dressing like a ponce, **** 'em.

    ***

Gerric rode silently, his eyes stared ahead apparently oblivious to those around him. When I see him, I could challenge him. No, Euric'll never agree to that. I gotta get in close myself, I want him to see my axe when I get him. Or a knife? Something personal, I need to see his eyes go dark. Maybe use Kate? Euric always had a taste for beautiful women. Could she make him do somethin' stupid?

He lost count of the number of deaths he had planned for Euric as they rode. He was tally the pros and cons of throwing Euric to the Goligai when Nazir rode with his news.

"Well, ****." He muttered. "We'll be wantin' to go stop the bandits, I reckon."

Departing the city felt different this time. Back in the beginning, Kate had been a stranger here. She and her comrades had just been passing through. In pursuit of easy money, they'd accepted a simple delivery job. Who could have predicted the events that that act would set in motion? The group had been embroiled in so much trouble. But despite that, Kate didn't regret the path she'd walked. Plenty of good had been accomplished. The council's monstrous conspiracy was dead (along with many of its servants); New allies and opportunities abounded; And the group finally had some extra money. Kate's comrades looked so much better clad in their new weapons, armour and clothing. Some of them had even bathed! Now if she could only find a way to keep them halfway presentable.

Kate pondered the pending mission as she passed through the gates. Today they rode to tie up one of the conspiracy's last remaining loose ends. Alaric would pay for the many innocent lives he'd taken. And that justice would be dispensed by the 'victims' that he'd failed to kill. No longer would this coward be able to direct his puppets from afar. Now it was his turn to be on the front lines.

    Four days later

Nazir's report provoked the obvious reaction from Kate. Of course she was going to help the farmers. Even the tactics involved didn't require much thought. This situation was a fairly textbook one.

"I think the best course is to lay an ambush. We can hide in the nearby greenery; Then blindside the bandits as they pass. That's assuming they are bandits, of course. In the event that they turn out to be an unusually paranoid minstrel troupe, please hold your fire. Agreed?"

She paused for comments or suggestions.

If we prep the ambush just on this side of the hill you can make contact with the farmers up there and find out what is going on before the horsemen crest the hill though it would have to be quick. I noticed some bows among the farmers. Maybe they can be inspired to help in defending their families. Leave the wagon here so it won't slow us down? The families can take cover behind it."

The whole discussion took only few moments. The sun was still high enough for them all to see their surroundings well but would soon begin its descent towards the hills.

They moved forward, leaving the wagon behind, the wagon braked and horses bound to a tree.

    Spoiler: Gerric's tactical musings...
    Show

Nazir's idea was good - but not against horsemen. Gerric watched the top of the hill with bad feelings - he fought horsemen and they always had advantage when fighting downhill.

It was better to move to the hill, to gain the same advantage. Even Nazir's bow would reach further from up there and the boulders provided some cover in case enemies had some ranged weapons. He could even shoot few times before they reach them.

He did not count with the cooperation from the farmers. They would protect the kids, but not fight back if they could escape. Maybe Kate could sway some of them... but he did not count on it. Four against six, with an archer who can kill two before they reach them...

Not bad. Still, Nazir had to stay on the hill - and his targets would have to be first enemies with ranged weapons, then leadership. Now it was just a matter of reaching the hill on time...

    Spoiler: OOC
    Show
    ...that was a good roll.
If you stay on the top of the hill, the riders won't be able to charge and will take few rounds to get to you.

Gerric spat a thick wad of phlegm off to the side of his horse.

"Ain't good terrain for an ambush. 'Specially against chargin' horsemen. We may kill a few and the horses will still trample the peasants." He pointed out the hill. "We need higher ground so their horses can't charge on top o' us. Make 'em slow, easy to shoot. If ya wanna try and rally the farmers together go ahead. Don't see much a point o' it though. Peasants are near useless against raiders unless they got a wall o' pikes between them. That's we we- they- target 'em in the first place. Nazir will have an easy shot if we get a clear sign that raiders are what they are. And with the rest o' us before him on slightly lower terrain we can make our own wall against the bastards."

Gerric's expertise proved as useful as ever. Granted, Kate didn't feel quite as grateful now that she knew the origin of said expertise. It was so easy to picture him chasing down innocent civilians with glee. Helping to save a few would do very little to balance his ledger. Suppressing such feelings (for the moment), Kate nodded her approval.

"Then that's what we'll do. Position yourselves according to Gerric's instructions. We'll act without contacting the farmers. Any objections?"

Uruk was relieved to leave the stinking city behind, noticing the gradual improvement in the air quality. What bothered him was the aching in his chest, the bond that he felt with Ruark stretched and strained as they went on their way. They hadn't been apart since Ruark saved him from the cages of the Dark Ones. At that time, he was convinced the next time they were separated, then reunited, would be by death. Uruk kept quiet for the journey, mind wandering.

Even when presented with the current dilemma, Uruk did not show any sense of urgency and awaited his instructions. He only made one comment concerning the high ground, "Charge down hill is good for killing, bad for turning".

Nazir nods. "Make them come to us off the road and up the hill, got it. " Bow strung, he hurries back to the vantage point he had before then looks around for the best spot, slowing some offroad to keep quiet. Once there, he sets up his position- bastard sword and 10 arrows (5 fine broadhead and 5 bodkin) laying against his cover in easy reach and 3 bodkin arrows in hand. Keeping the party in the corner of his eye so he knows where they are, his main focus is on staying out of sight of the horsemen and farmers while trying to read the intent of each.

They all followed Nazir, carefully, not to get themselves spotted.

Nazir prepared his bow and arrows, and watched the two groups. The peasants must have noticed the riders, because they tried to hurry - to move up to the hill as soon as possible. They were at the middle of the hill when the horsemen approached the hill and slowed down.

They all could hear them now - voices of parents asking their children to hurry up, trying to sound courageous, angry... but also terrified. Voices of children, asking the parents to carry them, to slow down, to rest. Sounds of their wheelbarrows, the few mules they had.

Nazir could also hear the horsemen. Laughing, joking. Coarse jokes - and voices full of violence. They spurred their horses and started mounting the hill...

Nazir took in the situation as he nocked and began drawing his bow. His allies, the farmers, the bandits. This was the kind of thing he had done before, but with a larger squad. The difference here was these allies were more skilled than those he used to travel with. Still, melee was still dangerous no matter what the skill level especially when outnumbered. His job was to more than even the odds before the bandits could reach them. He would hit the lead rider. That would cause that horse to get in the way of the others and hopefully give him time for more shots. Whoever that lead rider is he wouldn't get another chance to slaughter innocents.

The archer focused his aim, knowing this was the best shot he would get here. Timing the speed and movement of the horse, he loosed the arrow. It was a distant shot but well within his range. The arrow flew downhill. As soon as the arrow reached its target Nazir was already reaching for another arrow.

Kate's eyes narrowed when she heard the voices. Any doubts about a misunderstanding vanished. This situation was indeed exactly as it had seemed: A pack of worthless jackals looking for an easy meal. Well, this time they'd picked the wrong hunting grounds. Kate's sword waited patiently in her hand. Its moment would come. Right now, though, was the arrow's time to shine. How many bandits would fall before even getting a chance to fight? Kate looked forward to finding out.

The men were now visible - they wore surcoats, and Nazir even saw a glint of scale armour under it. And helmets. Spears, shields, swords.

It was time. Nazir breathed in...and released the arrow. He followed it with eyes, but did not wait for it to hit - he had a second one in his hand before the first one landed.

The others heard the twang of the bow and watched the arrow rise...

...and suddenly the leading man leaned back in his saddle and fell to the ground, right under the hooves of the following horses.

The following men tried to steer clear of the man - and for a moment the whole group stopped.

And then they noticed the arrow - and with a shout, they spurred their horses, up the hill. They were good riders - it was obvious, as they handled their horses.

But by the time they managed to get their horses to full gallop, Nazir had already the second arrow ready...

If they ride on, you'll have 3 rounds in front of you. On third, they will be at the peasants.

Also, on fourth behind trees - if they don't stay at the peasants.

One down, too many to go, but I am evening the odds. He scanned the remaining horsemen and picked out the biggest of the bunch. Nazir again paced the target, carefully aiming and allowing for the pace and galloping, then loosed. The arrow had already traveled nearly half the distance by the time he had finished his firing breath then breathed in fully to call out as loudly as he could.

"Hey Pig Brains! Your halfling archer is up here! Turn and flee or face elven magic!" He grabbed more arrows as he stepped out of cover to ensure the riders could see him.

Full aim then fire at the biggest one. If they are all about the same size, then pick an apparent leader, else the one in front (to hopefully slow them down again). Do I notice anything else about the riders?

Trying to intimidate them to either flee for come for him.

Kate winced when Nazir stepped into view. So reckless! Why couldn't he just have asked for help? There was a heavily armoured knight standing right here! If anyone was going to become a target, it should have been her. Kate quickly positioned herself as close to Nazir as she could, without breaking cover. Should the need arise, she'd step out and shield him.

Nazir heard Kate moving. As he prepped another arrow he spoke just loud enough for her to hear while minimally moving his lips. The riders were too far and bouncing too much to really notice him talking but it was instinctual. "Not yet. Need to make them think there is an easy target up here so they come to us and not the farmers. Them coming up the rocky hill will give me more time to shoot. Have a plan in case they don't come this way."

Figured taking the second shot was ok to jump to. After the second one is resolved we should probably switch to the rest of the party's time. If the riders don't take the bait my next shot will be a quick one just before the riders get hidden by the trees.

Kate stayed put for the moment. One way or another, she'd soon have to move.

Nazir spoke fast. "They don't have bows. Bandits think the arrow came from the farmers. That's bad. Easier if more of us used bows too. Farmers have bows. Tell them they have help, to turn and fight." Nazir started pulling back a third arrow.

Urukubarr waited impassively, prepared to charge at the command. His inner beast was quiet, Urukubarr did not feel compelled by it, nor did he feel he could tap into it. Today's blood would be spilt coldly.

And again, Nazir's arrow found its target and the largest man fell down to the ground.

One of the men rose in his saddle and pointed at Nazir, shouting set of short commands - the others quickly spread and continued to ride. This time up the hill, towards Nazir.

Nazir experiences mixed feelings as the riders vanish into the trees following his insults. The farmers are safer for the moment but his remaining targets were now out of sight.

""Done. They are coming up the hill to us but I don't have a shot at this point. How do you want to handle this? Go meet them in the trees? Let them come out into the open so I can shoot again while you all hit them from the side?" The halfling grabs his sword and hops up to the top of the boulders then prepares to fire.
