    In light of Venices repeated attacks on Dutch interest, we are saddened to inform the world that a state of war must exist, until the Venice people learn to not meddle in the affairs of others.

    This is uncalled-for, unnecessary, and unwise. We would have preferred to settle things with peaceful diplomacy, but the Netherlands' underhanded use of skullduggery and warfare only prove the necessity of sanctioning them economically and praying for the widows of their sailors.

    So my first worry was that Venice would immediately rush buy an a.bomb.

    But they didn't I suppose they don't have the money.

    The city state sends troops our way.

    As we start to vote on a world leader.

    As our city state connections are broken thanks to Anatrica.

    Our city starts taking potshots at Melbourne troops.

    Our citizens fight the barbarian scum.

    We move the great scientist out of the city.

    Our air force can't do anything yet.

    Our navy hunts for barbs.

    First Captain Suleiman of the Greater Ottostralian Union would like to register his displeasure with the World Congress's recent decision. While we understand that Ankh-Morpork and the Netherlands have serious grievances with one another, outlawing all trade in the region is harmful to uninvolved parties. We request that in future, you settle disputes in a more civilized fashion, such as intercontinental warfare.

    The Patriciandent would like to assure the First Captain that we are working on that on our end, although it appears that the Netherlands have forgotten to upgrade their navy to modern standards before declaring a trans-oceanic war.

    I must say, though, these Going-Under-The-Water-Safely-Devices they invented are quite amusing.

    As Venician subs start pillaging our trade routes.

    And barbarians annoy city connections.

    And yet I still can't see.

    As the Ottomans accept our trade offer.

    As we keep at our influencing the city states.

    And fail in some cases.

    As Rotterdam starts a fast.

    How is it being blockaded?

    Our infantry conscript from the plantations of Melbourne.

    And attack this Machine gun.

    Our workers try to move back to New Orleans.

    As the siege of Valetta continues.

    Our frigate tries looking for subs, but finds none.

    Rotterdam's guards can see no problems.

    As we continue with these fancy railroads.

    As our great scientist wait.

    Paris's guards report no problems.

    As Frigate reinforcements move to pillage trade routes freely.

    Here we see Amsterdam turn out Blitz Paratroopers.

    Rotterdam turning out a sub.

    Urtecht turning out a battleship.

    Orleans still working on a sub.

    Same with Paris.

    Lyon working on a cargo ship.

    Here we see the Dutch form of governance.

    And the world leader proposal.

    We are the most well loved.

    The tourism wars.

    And the Venice space program.

    No, you sniped one at some point. I discovered the actual problem of giving the AI a turn, though. They spend all of your gold on worthless crap. But it's my bad.

    Speaking of wastes of gold, do we really want to shut down international trade entirely, save for the two collectivist nations? That seems rather backwards.

    What, no love for Carthage?

    I'll be visiting family for the next week. Is it too selfish of me to ask for a pause in the turn timer? I can't say that I trust the AI to handle the delicacies of the next few turns.

    Dear Carthage:

    We could not help but notice the flotilla of warships gathering off the coast of Istanbul. My military advisors have insisted that this can only be a prelude to an attack, but as there has never been any quarrel between our two nations, I am sure they must be mistaken. As such, I have concluded that they must have been intended as a goodwill offering to us, to supplement our navy. We gladly accept this gift in the spirit in which it is given.

    Sincerely,
    Captain Suleiman, First Navigator of the Ottonesian Empire

    P.S. - some of your sailors were apparently confused about their orders, and elected to sink their ships rather than allow us to take possession. We hope you clear that up for them!

    Speaking of troop buildups on borders, we can't help but notice that the sprawling land forces of Carthage's worker-owned military-industrial complex are on our borders as well, after absorbing our Polynesian and Japanese neighbors.

    In Ankh-Morpork, and in our confederation of allies, we do not pick fights. We actively deter. The tide of Carthaginian aggression will be stopped before it reaches our city.

    Don't worry, though, we'll be done with it in another few years.

    (Hmm, I must have been playing against the AI too much... they're not as eager at proactively seeking to deter invasion. I should have seen this coming. Good timing, both of you, preempting my plans.)

    Carthage is saddened that her foes have chosen to strike against her militarily, though not too surprised.

    We will defend ourselves with all available resources and technologies at our disposal. I suspect that you will find that we are quite capable as we turn our production heavily towards our defense.

    Although this conflict was not at the time and place of our choice, we welcome the opportunity to face our foes openly on the field of battle. We hope to prevail. We will triumph, or will give our lives in the attempt. The die is cast.

    And so it came to pass, that Carthage faced its greatest challenge;
    Wars do not occur due to naval "misunderstandings" or "border disputes;"
    Rather, they are the result of incompatible cultures and empires;
    Each seeking to assert authority;
    All refusing to retreat from the inevitable;
    Carthage will triumph or perish;
    We expect our enemies to be equally determined;
    May the best emerge victorious
