Re: Random Banter D&D 3.5e Campaign IC, Thread II
Throne Room
Spoiler: Alphonse, Bela
A small, elderly man in fluffy pink robes and a matching mask falls from the ceiling with surprising grace. Sharp, needle-like teeth protrude from his mouth, and he wears a red skullcap that is suspiciously moist. He carries a long pike with a jagged blade - easily three times his height. He grumbles, and a sharp, grating sound escapes his lips, "NOT QUITE, LADDIE." There's a gash across the side of his face, nearly cutting the pointy tip from his right ear, but no blood flows from it - the man snickers as it closes, and sheds the robe, revealing a leathery hide and iron boots underneath.
"I'LL DO YOU FOR THAT ONE, LADDIE - YOU NEARLY CUT MY BLOODY CAP OFF!" He shifts his weight back, then lunges forward and spears Alphonse through the leg! The man yanks his pike back, and brandishes it menacingly.
OOC: That's a hit... although it doesn't seem like it hurt him. For his part, the redcap confirms a crit on Alphonse, dealing 26 damage. Bela, you're up!
Spoiler: Knowledge (nature) DC 15
This is a redcap - evil fey that grow more powerful by dipping their caps in their victim's blood. They're strong for their size, and just as hard to push around as a full-size human (or elf). Like most fey, they're weak to cold iron.
You've heard that redcaps don't live very long - if they don't kill enough people to keep their caps wet with blood, they wither away and die.
Spoiler: Knowledge (nature) DC 22
Redcaps have a bunch of superstitions and rules they adhere to religiously - you remember they hate even numbers (and always travel in odd-numbered groups), and only bathe in still water.
When redcaps die, their bodies disappear, but they leave behind a single tooth, which can be used to bargain with other fey, or in the making of some magic items.

???
Spoiler: Niro
The portable door flickers to life, and you fall... a little further than you thought. You and General Holtti drop perhaps 30ft to a stone hallway below. You hear a voice above you.
"Tricksy metal man! That's not what floors do! Not faaaaaair!"
--
Holtti grabs another healing potion, then dashes ahead into the dark tunnel. "Get out of the light - we'll be on an even playing field if it can't see us!"
OOC: You take 9 falling damage. Niro, you're up!

???
Spoiler: Niro
Four glowing orbs float down through the hole, casting light down the tunnel - accompanied by the flutter of tiny wings. The general swears loudly, and growls, "Damned fairy magic!"
Now that you can see a little better, you notice the stone down here is grey and drab. The tunnel is missing all of the ornamentation of the palace above - indeed, the only decoration in sight is the mess of cobwebs hanging from the walls.
Hotti turns to you. "There's a network of tunnels under the palace. Some of them connect to different rooms - including mine." He drinks his last potion, then backs down the hallway, sword drawn. "There is a storeroom down this way - follow me!"
OOC: You can see now! Niro, you're up!

The Courtyard
Spoiler: Tass
"Chaotic. I went up the guard tower to check on my guard after we dealt with the intruder, and when I come back, the four of you are gone! My guards are babbling about mind control, and the servants are under orders to build a bonfire!" Dame Borgia throws her hands up in the air. "Some of the guests are leaving - Marquess Wren and his wife are gone, as are all of Cygnus' clergy, and a few others I didn't recognize."
She puts a palm to her forehead. "But I think things are finally under control now. How is your fairy hunt going?"

The Courtyard
SpoilerNowhere to be found, but I've got worse things to hunt. The intruder mentioned the name of a demon who Alphonse and Béla had a brief stint with before, and he must have slain your guard soon after you left the tower, for the basement door was broken and the body was lying decapitated on the roof. I've been trying to spot him again, but he's a shapechanger and I haven't been able to pick up on any suspicious activity from the skies.
Tass scratches her neck.
As for the others, Alphonse and Béla went to escort Wuscfrea to his safe-room, and Niro went to escort Holtti to his office to make sure he get some treatment for the bleeding those fae blossoms caused him. That's what the bonfire is for, incidentially, to burn the fae blossoms.Clouddreamer Teddy by me, high above the world, far beyond its matters...

The Courtyard
Spoiler: Tass
Borgia's lips tighten, and she furrows her brow in concentration for a few seconds. "That's bad news. How are we going to find a shapeshifter here - and before he kills anyone else?"
"Well, it's good to know the bonfire isn't more fae mischief."
--
Storeroom
Spoiler: Niro
The floating lights rush forward, and a crossbow bolt flies out - and you hear a loud *tink* as it bounces off of... Holtti's uniform, and clatters to the floor. You hear a tiny voice scream in frustration, "WHAT. NO. THAT is WRONG. Arrows go THROUGH the clothes! NOT. FAIR! STOP CHEATING!"
You turn a corner and are confronted with an open door - which the general closes and locks as soon as you're behind it. It's too dark for you to see in here, but the room smells like old canvas bags and flour. Holtti whispers, "There is a passage up to the servant's corridors from here. I can get it open, but it'll take me a little bit to move these bags out of the way." You hear the soft clink of his sword tapping his gauntlets. "Or, we can get ready to fight. I'm not sure of our chances, but if you think we can take it, then I'll fight with you."

Storeroom
Spoiler: Niro
Holtti begins throwing sacks and crates to the side. White powder flies up and quickly fills the room, bringing with it dry, snowy coat reminiscent of a bakery.
Underneath the sound of the general clearing the back wall, you hear a soft click click... click from the door. The door handle begins to jiggle.
OOC: You've got one round to prepare.

Spoiler: Alphonse, Bela
The rays strike true, and the redcap hisses in pain. Prince Wuscfrea ducks behind the throne, and peers out from behind it, terrified.

The Great Hall
SpoilerTass speaks in hushed but hurried tones.
Several. Assassins are at large and they almost got Holtti before we could intervene. I presume he was targetted in the same manner as one attempt on your life we averted earlier this evening. We haven't seen any attempts at using poisons beyond what they did to the guards, but if you don't disagree, I would like to infirm you against it. There is known black lotus smuggling in this city.
Just waiting long enough for a response, Tass moves along to the next topic, leaning in futher to whisper in Jacinth's ear.

Re: Random Banter D&D 3.5e Campaign IC, Thread II
Throne Room
Spoiler: Alphonse, Bela
The glaive clatters to the ground, and Wuscfrea reaches a trembling arm out to grab it. Your powerful blow strikes true, and the redcap's skin hisses and cracks as the cold iron sword slices through it like butter.
"AAAAARGH! FILTHY, UNCLEAN! IT BURNS! EVIL HUMANS! DIE! DIE! DIE!" The redcap hops backwards out of your reach, and puts all of his strength into a wild thrust with his pike... which catches Alphonse just under the shoulder. The polearm pierces your armor and cuts a nasty gash in your torso, narrowly missing your ribcage. The little fairy rips it back out again with a snarl. "TAKE THAT!" Despite the trash-talk, though, the redcap is starting to look a little beat-up - and it twitches nervously whenever your cold iron sword gets close.
OOC: That's a hit! The redcap 5fts back, and power attacks Alphonse for 24 damage! Bela, you're up!
--
The Great Hall
Spoiler: Tass
At your mention of the possible poison danger, Princess Jacinth nods. "Yes, of course. Thank you."
"A man in pink? Not that I know of - unless my guard has returned from watching my son, in which case I'm not certain. He's stealthy enough that I just don't always know when he's around - and I would not put a pink disguise past him - but I couldn't say for sure.."
--
The man in pink is definitely armed - you notice a knife at his hip and what looks like the hilt of another weapon on his other side. Distinguishing figures are a little harder to pick out beneath the opulent costume, but he appears to be blonde, and of average height. You don't think you've seen him before, but with all of the people here at the feast, it's hard to tell.

Throne Room
Spoiler: Alphonse, Bela
The two bolts of fire find their target, and the redcap howls in pain as his skin chars. He nervously glances towards the door.
Prince Wuscfrea takes a few cautious steps forward, brandishing Alphonse's glaive. You can tell he's been trained with similar weapons, but he doesn't really have much experience fighting.
OOC: That's two more hits, and the redcap seems to be on his last legs. Alphonse, you're up!

The Great Hall
Spoiler: Tass
"He has a hat of disguise - he could look like anyone here. Although, now that you mention it, there was someone that fit that description dressed in pink a few minutes ago, but I think he left when Niro and Holtti came through."
At this moment, the man in pink chooses to walk towards you, and Dame Borgia grips her guisarme a little more tightly. He bows to the three of you, and says, "Ladies. I am the High Princess's guard. Stay your weapon, Lilith."
The acting guard captain, who was holding her guisarme perhaps a little too ready for the guard's liking, stows the weapon behind her back and takes a step forward. "Forgive me. I've been a little jumpy tonight. I mean no offense."
"And none taken, my dear. We're all a little on edge, I think." Jacinth turns to her guard. "Tell me, is my son safe?"
The guard raises and eyebrow, and shrugs. "...I would assume so. I have not seen him in some time, however. Why do you ask?"
"Because I told you to follow him! What is the meaning of this?!"
The guard crosses his arms. "You told me no such thing. I was keeping an eye on General Holtti, as you asked - until he disappeared. When I was about to return to you to tell you of this, your son came running to the courtyard, and I felt it prudent to watch him while he and the enchanted guards were all in the courtyard. I came to tell you of this now, and found you talking to Lilith and Tass - and I watched to make sure they were not enspelled either before I approached, to maintain the element of surprise. I see now that that was not necessary."
Jacinth grits her teeth and runs her fingers through her hair. She whispers, hurriedly now, "Then if I didn't tell you to watch my son, who did I tell? And where are they now?"
Spoiler: Sense Motive DC 20
You're confident Jacinth's personal guard is telling the truth.
Dame Borgia, however, is getting a little twitchy. Her body posture is tensed for attack, and her apology seems forced.

Throne Room
Spoiler: Alphonse, Bela
The redcap pulls back, and raises its weapon to defend itself, and loses a hand for its trouble. The stump sizzles as black ichor drips from the fairy's wrist, and it screams... but the scream is cut short when your second strike goes through its heart, and the redcap explodes in a cloud of foul-smelling black smoke just before its severed hand reaches the ground.
You hear a small click-clack as something hard falls to the ground where the evil fairy stood - and when the smoke clears, there lies a single, sharp tooth.

Re: Random Banter D&D 3.5e Campaign IC, Thread II
Throne Room
Spoiler: Alphonse, Bela
Prince Wuscfrea nods, and hands you your glaive. "Aye, indeed - there are some in the safe room - which..." He dashes back behind the throne and kicks the back of it, then looks up and grins. "...I have found!"
After a few seconds, the throne slides forward, and you see a small opening with a ladder leading down. Wuscfrea climbs down, and waves you forward.
Spoiler: Spot DC 20
You're confident that you're alone in the room now.
--
Hidden Tunnel
The ladder takes you some twenty or thirty feet down, into a dark stone tunnel. Prince Wuscfrea takes a small pendant from his pocket and mumbles a few words - and it begins to glow brightly, like a torch. You are standing in a hallway that extends past your vision in two directions - south, towards the courtyard, and north towards the city. You hear the throne slide back into place above you with a loud clack, and the prince walks north.
Soon, the light reveals a heavy stone door, and Wuscfrea places his pendant against the stone - which slides into the wall without a sound. As soon as you've all entered, the door closes, and magical torches spring to life.
--
Safe Room
This room is similar to the one you found Prince Wuscfrea in at the feast hall, if perhaps a little bigger. There is a reading area, with a bookshelf and an armchair; a small mattress and some sheets; a chamber pot; and a chest of medicine and potions, from which the prince retrieves two vials of a milky-white liquid. "Here, Alphonse - I'm afraid it's all we've got left down here. I should have this room stocked again."
He sits in the armchair, and puts a finger to his lip. "I wish I could be some help here - but I don't know anything about our attackers. Holtti's much better at this sort of thing. I hope he's made it to his office and gotten some healing."

Spoiler: Fun with Al and Wuf. Also BelaAlphonse takes his glaive and straps it to his back. "Thank you, Sir Prince. Let's get a move on...and let's find you a weapon so you can defend yourself."
Alphonse will look around the room a bit before leaving, to ensure they're not being followed. After satisfied at their safety, he proceeds on.
------
Once inside the safe room and handed the potions, he hands one over to Bela "Not that I don't trust you, Sir Prince. I just find it prudent to be sure. Sir Bela, inspect this for poison and legitimacy."
He turns to the Prince and gives him a charming smile. "Worry not. Sir Niro is a strong man, as is the General. He'll be fine. Though...if you can't tell us about who our mysterious friends are, perhaps we can discuss your more concrete ones. Did you know General Holtti has blue blood, in the literal sort of meaning? Also, Sir Bela, rack your brain for why a creature would have blue blood, if you would."

Re: Random Banter D&D 3.5e Campaign IC, Thread II
Safe Room
Spoiler: Alphonse, Bela
Prince Wuscfrea takes a seat and nods. "I did, as a matter of fact. I don't have a habit of telling people about it - because Janick doesn't - but if you're concerned about it I suppose I can let you in on his family's secrets." He puts a hand to his forehead and sighs. "The Holtti family has an interesting mix of supernatural blood. A very long time ago, an ancestor of Janick's was a paladin - for the old gods, so at least two or three hundred years ago. This paladin - by the name of Holtti - was wed to some manner of celestial being. I had assumed for a very long time that it was an angel, but Janick says it was more likely an eladrin - regardless, it was celestial of some kind. That blood has been diluted somewhat, I think, but the Holtti family is still blessed with extraordinarily long lives - much like my family, come to think of it. Not that I think my grandfather's lineage is celestial in nature, mind you, but I suppose I have never asked him either."
Wuscfrea leans forward, and clasps his hands together. "That, however, was not enough to satiate my curiosity as a boy - nor do I think it satisfies yours, if your expressions are anything to go by." He pauses. "His mother I know less about. Her family is from the mountains up north, and as Janick tells it, they were a wild bunch. Wild like the wilderness - unpredictable, unknowable, and unforgiving of strangers. He says they are silver-haired barbarians with skin like armor, and brave the wintery peaks in loincloths - living in caves and fighting dragons for silver, haha! I've never met them, so I wouldn't know for sure - but I do know that Janick is tough, and has no fear of the cold." The prince grins. "I suspect there may be some dragon blood in his veins too - certainly, it would explain the claws he has for hands."
"That is all I know about that, though."

Princess Jacinth draws her lips back and glares at the three of you, then puts her mask on and walks back to the crowd, making cheery conversation with her guests once more.
Jacinth's guard surreptitiously draws a hatchet, and says softly, "Lovely. Unless one of you has a better suggestion, I will go looking for the prince."
"I'll go with you. I know the way around the palace." Borgia looks at you. "Why don't you ask around and see who the princess was talking to?"
