Obscure Cultural References
In Civilization 3, one of the exemplars of this genre, if you left the credits screen open for a while a picture of Elvis would appear.
In the add-on to Civ 3: Play the World (PTW), there was a well-hidden easter egg which would convert all your generals to Elvis units if you were playing a regicide game on Elvis' birthday. I actually saw this happen but I though it was a bug until everyone else told me they had the same "problem."
The older-Elvis iconography is a staple of the Civilization games and is used to represent culture.

Re: Obscure Cultural References
Well, these might not be obscure, considering the crowd 'round here... but I was looking at this Erfworld page, and I couldn't help cracking up. Parson's warlords have a target, a crosshair, a shooting target, a morgue toe-tag, and a Star Trek redshirt... Not too surprising they they all croaked...
