I retract my earlier assessment that this was a bad time to find you're standing on ice over water.

    "Trust me."
    "Always."

I'm glad I was proven wrong. *sigh* I want to see the yrthak again, though.

That water is going to be so cold for Lien.

But... but what about epic battle?! What about Redcloak's niece under the mask? But...

Is there a kraken (did that), shark (did that too, jeez), icewater piranhas in that water at least?

    HAH!

I said I saw a crack in the ice, there! I just didn't imagine that it could be used to the advantage of the paladins. Good thinking, Lien!

BTW, Lien could call upon her shark special mount, and they could ride it all the way to the pole or wherever they're heading?

Nope. Well, it depends. Will that Ring of Water Breathing stave off the cold for one or both of them, or half the cold, or half the cold, or what? The ring itself isn't described in the SRD, and the spell Water Breathing doesn't mention protection vs. cold. Maybe the ring is in one of the source books, like the one I'm perusing these days - back home...

It's hard to show a lot of time passing in three panels but I'm pretty sure the point is they're waiting until he leaves, as he's shown doing in the last one.

Even if they knew the water went where they wanted they can't count on being able to break through from below. Not to mention coming upon an underwater foe could go very badly for if they can't retreat out of the water.

I don't know what's funnier: the fact that she thought of the underwater buddy breathing system so quickly (although the conversation about the items they had IN the cold weren't foreshadowed enough) or that our mysterious masked friend looks totally dejected that they weren't able to fight them!

There's a Ring of Water Breathing in the MIC (page 128) but it doesn't provide protection from cold.

Lien must be freezing without her ring!

    Hmmm
Extreme cold (below -20° F) deals 1d6 points of lethal damage per minute (no save). In addition, a character must make a Fortitude save (DC 15, +1 per previous check) or take 1d4 points of nonlethal damage. Those wearing metal armor or coming into contact with very cold metal are affected as if by a chill metal spell.
    There's worse.

I wonder what the creature in the mask is... with a hunch like that, I'm guessing a monstrous humanoid of some description.

I was half expecting a joke about how O-chul's constitution is so high he doesn't need the ring for a long while, but oh well. Maybe next page.
“Evil is evil. Lesser, greater, middling, it's all the same. Proportions are negotiated, boundaries blurred. I'm not a pious hermit, I haven't done only good in my life. But if I'm to choose between one evil and another, then I prefer not to choose at all.”

Thumbs up Re: OOTS #1035 - The Discussion Thread

One of the things I love about this comic is Giant's mastery of storytelling.

He doesn't paste a text box that says "hours later..." but instead shows us three views with the snowstorm slowly ending. A brilliant way of showing how much time has passed, without shoving it in your face like so many lesser artists would.

Also, the way he said "Always" made my eyebrows go up. Could O-Chul be getting a little sweet on Lien? And hey, they've exchanged rings...

Her ring is non-standard, it was established as protecting against the cold.

Yes, there is. Suffocation is one of the easiest ways to kill a player character in Dungeons & Dragons 3.5.
Spoiler: Completely optional to enjoying the comic
    Show
If you like to play-along with the Class and Level Geekery topics, and you assume strict rules were followed O-Chul shouldn't have begun suffocating until about 50 rounds went by, or about 300 seconds/5 minutes. That's half the time it required for a check for nonlethal damage from exposure to the cold, and only because O-Chul has a freakishly high constitution score.

ETA: It occurs to me O-Chul could just give Lien his cloak while he wears her ring.

They'll be fine: it's water, not ice, so (assuming real-world physics) the temperature should be at least 0° C (32 °F? Non-SI units are not my strongest suit).
