It is the beginning of summer vacation, and you are all newly come to the campus of Rosewood Foster Homes. It's a place designed for older children who don't do well with traditional foster care. The apartment you live in has three small bedrooms, one for each of you, on the upper floor. Each bedroom has a bed, a closet, a desk, and a bookshelf. There is also a mini-kitchen upstairs for your use, and a living room with a PS2, a few couches, and a large tank holding a beta fish. Your assigned foster parents are Mary and Eric Rochein, who live on the first floor. There is also a basement with a guest bedroom, a laundry room, and a large storage area.

The foster home has given each of you an older computer to do your schoolwork on, although the internet is on a whitelist filter. You receive an allowance of $10 a week. You are responsible for your own laundry, the care of a small vegetable garden behind the house, and the general cleanliness of the upstairs area (including feeding the beta).

You attend mandatory bi-weekly therapy appointments. The campus, in addition to housing, has both indoor and outdoor recreational facilities and a park with walking trails. There is also a large dormitory that houses children with more severe issues.

Autumn Craig, a gangly girl with shoulder length honey blonde hair, was in the garden digging up weeds, the knees of her blue jeans stained with grass. Dirt was caked under her fingernails as she attacked the unwanted plants with gusto.

Near where Autumn was attacking the weeds, a young girl with long black hair stood under a tree, her arms wrapped around a large book. She watched the weed-pulling with mild curiosity, but had not yet made any moves to help.

Inside the house, a short red-haired girl rummages through the assorted items in the living room; carefully turning around figurines, straightening the frames and nosing inside the assorted books and magazines.

A woman's voice calls out from inside the house. "Girls! It's almost dinnertime. We'll be eating out in the garden, so could you come help set the table and chairs up?"

Autumn stood up and dusted her hands off on her jeans, not really helping to get her hands clean and only making her pants dirtier. She then took off running to go help set up things for dinner.

Christina looked down at her book, and muttered something to herself about not having enough time for everything. She headed upstairs first, to put her book away, before coming back down to the garden and standing in the corner, hoping that the mentioned tables and chairs would be forthcoming.

"Geeze, and this was getting good." Elise quickly closes a magazine and slides it under the couch. "Coming! I call dibs on the black chair!" she yells, as she drags it out the house.

The woman gets one look at autumn and sends her upstairs to change clothes and clean up. Meanwhile, she calls the other two girls. "Christina! Elise! The table and chairs are in the basement by the laundry room, please go get them." Once everything is set up, she brings out dinner - deli sandwiches accompanied by roast asparagus.

Autumn huffs, but goes to change and wash up as she's told. But what was the point of doing all that work if she's just going to get told to get clean again? There was nothing wrong with a little dirt. It wasn't going to kill anyone.

Asparagus? Who liked that stuff? Christina made a face when the woman wasn't looking, and went to collect some chairs. Hopefully light ones. Black, or maybe red? That would be nice.

[Madmal]

"But I already brought mine this time!" Elise protests, but still follows suit, trying to get Christina to help her drag the table out.

Autumn appears downstairs again, washed up and changed for dinner. If there's still chairs that need bringing out, she'll help.

Once the chairs and table are up, Mrs. Rochein serves dinner, putting plates with deli sandwhiches and roast asparagus in front of each of the girls. Mr. Rochein speaks up first. "So girls, tell me a bit about yourselves. It's always good to get to know each other!"

"I like books." Christina offers, picking up the sandwich and taking a bite to buy more time. Books were safe. Nobody asked awkward questions about books. Normally, anyways. She stared at the others over the top of her sandwich, willing the two other girls to say something. Surely they would have some sort of story to tell?

Eric Rochein continues "What kind of books do you like, Miss Christina? I'm fond of mysteries myself."

[Destro_Yersul]

Looks like she was resigned to being first, then. "Mysteries are good." Except when they're yours. Don't get to find out what happened at the end, that way. "And ones with magic in them. I liked The Hobbit. But I like the ones that aren't stories, too. Herbs and science and stuff. Did you know an octopus has three hearts? I read that in a book."

Mary speaks up "That's very interesting dear. What about you, Elise?"

[Madmal]

"Huh!?" Elise drops the spoon she was playing with "Errr, I like TV. Cartoons. There's a couple of good ones that show at almost any time!"

Mary sighs very softly. "Really? What's your favorite cartoon?"

[Madmal]

"Oh, there's this one called Steven Universe" She excitedly nod. "It's good!"

"Gramps said too much TV'll rot your brain." Autumn intones.

[WarKitty]

"Everything in moderation", Eric chides. "Now, Mary and I have to head inside to clean up for a little bit. Why don't you girls chat for a while? I'm sure you're still all getting to know each other."

[Destro_Yersul]

"Yeah, getting to know each other." Christina looked at the other two, and did her best to offer a smile that didn't look creepy. It didn't work.

"Umm." How did one properly start one of these conversations, anyways? "I noticed you hate weeds," she said to Autumn.

"Can't let them take over, or we won't have any veggies." Autumn replied.

[Madmal]

"Any chance you can get the weeds on the asparagus?" Elise stuck out her tongue in exagerated disgust. "Not a fan."

[Artemis97]

Autumn frowns. "Don't be ungrateful. Be glad for what you've got." It was a lesson that had been instilled in her by her grandfather.

[Madmal]

"I'll still eat them, geeze" Elaine rolls her eyes. "It was a joke."

Mary's voice calls out from in the house "Alright girls, time to come in and get ready for bed! You have your first day of school tomorrow!"

"Don't see why we have to go to school." Autumn grumps.
