Re: V's gender...? (spoilers)
Yeah, but Haley is talking about how the point of the three Xykons is not that one of them is the right one, but that everyone is fooled into trying to figure it out...
Yeah... by tomorrow, we'll all be swimming in hobgoblins.
Not literally.I hope.
I can't even spot the ninja panel.

Eye position, rather.
(Apparently male characters in OotS are consistently drawn with their eyes lower in their heads than female characters. Vaarsuvius' eyes are--of course--between the two positions...)Orth Plays: Currently Baldur's Gate II

Re: V's gender...? (spoilers)
Got it reversed; female eyes are below the male eyes.
Elves, even in settings like Tolkein's Middle Earth, are exceedingly effeminate. The eyes, methinks, should have been put in the female position.
I personally take V to be male, and thought the 'you'll never know' part of the joke kind of killed it; I don't see how anyone could assume V was female; Elves are freaking effeminate all the time...
But, that aside, I really hope these threads stop popping up. How many would appear if you used the search engine for "V's Gender"?The artist formerly known as Tired N' Drowzy, master of puns.

Re: V's gender...? (spoilers)
All females with glowing eyes have thin outlines (if any). When V's eyes were glowing, they had thick outlines like a male.
There. conclusive proof that V is a male.

Re: V's gender...? (spoilers)
It also means that Durkon is female though. Hmmm, maybe V's gender will remain a mystery.

Re: V's gender...? (spoilers)
Wait... what? You linked to a comic about how "The real option isn't even on the table!" right after Xykon in the most recent comic says, "I'm pretty sure you're It." (if you know what I mean)
And your response is, "He must gay and male!"?
Seriously? Not, Hermaphroditic Androgynite? Or None of the Above?
You have an interesting set of evidence that doesn't even remotely seem related to your conclusion.

V's Gender (pronouns)
I've seen all kinds of nonstandard pronouns used to refer to Vaarsuvius. Stuff like "Hir" "Vim/Vis" and "Shim". These stopgap pronouns are awkward, confusing and ugly.
We should be using Spivak pronouns to describe em instead. They fit better into normal English, are easier to parse, and look more natural than the hybrid pronouns we've been using. For example:
"Vaarsuvius read hir note aloud to hirself"
vs.
"Vaarsuvius read eir note aloud to emself"Last edited by Bucky; 2009-06-04 at 09:39 PM.

Re: V's Gender
I always enjoy trying to write without pronouns for V, with an emphasis on making it sound natural. It doesn't always work though.

Re: V's Gender
I alternate pronouns every other sentence, as long as it doesn't make the subject ambiguous.
When referring to V and someone else, I use the opposite pronoun. So for Xykon and V, I use feminine. For V and Haley, I use masculine.

Re: V's Gender
I think we should use it for Vaarsuvius' pronoun. It is already grammatically supported. Besides, elves are in the Monster Manual, meaning they can be addressed as "thing" or "creature".

Re: V's Gender
I think of V as male, so I use masculine pronouns. If I'd thought of V as female, I'd use feminine pronouns.
If it's good enough for the OOTS cast, it's good enough for me. And I figure that if V actually cared about how he is referred to, then he would clarify the matter.
And yeah, stuff like "hir" and so forth just looks kind of silly to me, and draws too much attention to itself.

Meh, I always thought she was a she. Does it really matter what pronoun you use as long as anyone can know who you're talking about?

Re: V's Gender
The point of pronouns is usually to use shorter words when the person you're communicating to already knows who or what you're referring to. V is shorter than any pronoun, so I use V in place of pronouns for V. Or, rather, I do not use pronouns in place of V when referring to V.

Re: V's Gender
I'm quite happy with using "he" in its function as pronoun for undefined gender; I find it less confusing (regardless of situation) than any of the dozen of monstrosities spawned by poorly thought-out PC.
While I'm pleasantly surprised that this isn't another of the "I know V's gender" threads. In any case 99% of those discuss V's sex, not gender...

Re: V's Gender
If this comic were in French, we'd be using the masculine pronouns (un and le) to describe him. This is because in French (and potentially other languages, I'm not sure) the male pronoun is used when in a gender conflict. (example: in a room full of males and females, you refer to the group as if it were all males, only using the female pronoun if it were all females.) That's why I think we should just use he: it's technically correct since we're technically not sure. However, everyone has their different interpretations, so I'm not going to hold it against anyone if they use she/hir/xir. You'll just get double torture once I control the earth.

Seriously, though, can we get a title change on this thread? This is just begging to get kicked off, and seeing as we're not actually discussing V's gender it doesn't need to be.The above postsmaywill contain varying amounts of egotism.

Here's a related question; what do you think V's voice sounds like?
I imagine that s/he sounds a little bit like Tara Strong voicing Raven from Teen Titans. Too deep to be definitely female, too high to be definitely male, slightly monotonous and very intelligent sounding. And Strong is just about the one voice actor I know who voices almost as many male characters as female.
Edit:
Y'know, like this! Even has a "possessed by evil" moment that matches how Darth V should sound.Last edited by Starscream; 2009-06-04 at 09:23 PM.
