Well, I'm a guy, so I missed a lot of that interpretation, although V does strike me as a bit of a pretty boy.

I've never played Disgaea, but you're right, that does look a lot like V.

I have straight(ish) male friends who can recognise when a guy is pretty.

Eh, you learn when your friends tell you. Not that I take any interest in guys.

Anyway... Looking back at Inky, I just can't see him as female, even with that ponytail going "Look, I'm either a stereotype or misdirection. DECIDE!"

    Awesome.

I think the weirdest thing about it is that V's ponytail makes him look even more masculine to me, but Inky's makes her look even more feminine. Eh, maybe it's just my middle-class American mind sub-consciously making heterosexualism a default in my mind. Or maybe I'm looking too deep into it.

I think this thread could actually be used for a very interesting case study on how gender roles and assumptions can affect society. Or something like that.

    Seriously?

What can I say, people are crazy.

See here's the thing about this board. Because the restrictions on politeness are much more regimented than they are on most boards, it has an interesting effect on the social dynamic. When someone gets upset here, they can't just let loose and start flaming, they have to be more creative. So the boards here are drenched in sarcasm. It makes certain people come off as funny and charming, and others come off as just pretentious. This depends entirely on how good they are at keeping their anger under control, and I've seen many people use very, very direct terms to tell people that they are wrong. And while they don't actually say anything cruel, you can read in their tone that they want to be. So people are cautious about who's being serious here.

Or maybe I'm just an idiot.

Nah, you're not pretentious. I've seen people here who are though. Overall, the regulations make the board better, but it does turn the ocassional person into an even bigger jerk.

There's evidence against that here because haley's intellect is a female elf, not ambigous at all.

I'd say that that doesn't count, since that's a figment of her imagination, but Lirian is obviously female.

I simply always assumed the V was male because there have always been jokes about male elves looking female. A joke about a female elf looking male isn't quite as... funny? Well known?

I just always assumed V's gender thing was a one-shot joke that became a running gag.

Well, I suppose the joke might work both ways in the sense that a female elf would be less "curvy" than a human and might come across as boyish or at least similar enough to the slender male elves to make it hard to tell.
I just figured V was female since Haley chose to share a room with V that time rather than any of the guys. Unfortunately even though that's the strongest indicator of V's gender in the whole comic it's still not definitive since it could just mean Haley only thinks V is female or that she didn't want everyone to be too crowded and roomed with V because she knew V wouldn't leer at her or make sexist remarks even if V was male.
Truly the skill of gender ambiguity in this comic is diabolical.

Well, I just assumed V was male from the beginning because he has a masculine sounding name, and he wasn't drawn to look female as Haley was. And I honestly didn't put too much thought into it beyond that.

Plus, in one of the earlier strips before the ambiguity became a running gag, Roy referred to Varsuvious as "V-man". That makes me think that V was always a male in Rich's mind, and he didn't start playing up the ambiguity until later.
