Re: Motivators and Lolerfs (image-heavy)
After Stanley did his Vizzini bit (from The Princess Bride), I couldn't let the thought go...
Spoiler
I don't recall ever seeing a non-Erf motivator based on the original quote, but I'm sure someone's done it before. Is there no end to the awesomeness of that film?
Hmm. Yeah, that would work too, but I prefer "mind-control" in this case - it matches some of Wanda's past dialogue, rather than past forum posts.
Yes, but you did it first! And well done it was."We are all agreed that your theory is crazy. The question that divides us is
whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct."

Re: Motivators and Lolerfs (image-heavy)
Good news! I've updated the first post with a linkbanner that (if I understand correctly) fulfills the attribution requirement of the Creative Commons license that Rob and Jamie are using for Erfworld. I'm not certain, but I believe that it's enough to cover the thread in the same way that they don't put the copyright and byline on every single page of the comic.
That's a powerful meme! Check out this post on the Erfworld LJ community that SteveMB linked. My avatar is a remix that I made of Prince Ansom. Resource credit:

Re: Motivators and Lolerfs (image-heavy)
Good one. (It occurs to me that four of my motivators/demotivators use quotes (sometimes tweaked) from various places, and three of the others use the character quotes from the cast page. That might resonate a bit because of the parallel to the pop-culture references worked into the comic.)
Hmm. Yeah, that would work too, but I prefer "mind-control" in this case - it matches some of Wanda's past dialogue, rather than past forum posts.
And now, after reading today's xkcd, and deciding not to wait until 2021:

Re: Motivators and Lolerfs (image-heavy)
Yeah, Erfworld was obviously made for (and of) pop-culture references. As evidenced by the very first page.
S'arright. Great art is a process, not a result. And so is the schlock I crank out.
Agreed - I'll be middle-aged and too cranky to enjoy it then.

Re: Motivators and Lolerfs (image-heavy)
In the "Erf 66/60" thread, king korath mentioned a certain Admiral Ackbar:
Unfortunately, my GIMP-fu isn't nearly great enough to reshape the original speech bubbles, or to remove Ansom's bubble entirely (although it isn't too far out of place here, either).
Also, did Rob ever say what fonts he uses for speech bubbles? I was hoping to match the native Erf-font, but this was as close as I got without downloading something new.
EDIT: Now with realistic Gorrilla Milkshake font action! And as a bonus, one crudely redrawn speech bubble.Last edited by zillion ninjas; 2007-07-08 at 05:41 PM. Reason: tweak image a bit more

Re: Motivators and Lolerfs (image-heavy)
Arright, one more AYB. That's a bit too much text for one un-blown-up panel, so I co-opted its neighbor:
BTW, I've found that these small art mods really aren't that hard to do using free tools like The GIMP. As long as you stick to crop/copy/paste/text, it's pretty simple, and that's all that you need for basic motivators and lolerfs. (Well, that and a sense of humor. And Rob and Jamie's great source material!) Give it a try - you might like it.
On a personal note, I don't claim to have any sort of actual drawing ability, and my posts in this thread are really my first attempts at anything like this. I've been pleasantly surprised with the results (and I hope others have enjoyed them as well).Last edited by zillion ninjas; 2007-07-08 at 08:03 PM. Reason: props

Re: Motivators and Lolerfs (image-heavy)
I can testify that I don't draw well and that I hadn't ever used an image editor with layers before I made my first fanmix of a webcomic. My first few (of The Bastard Swordsman) were in GIMP, using a page provided without lettering. Remixing webcomics quickly became my favorite hobby and now I have some decent skill at it, all developed by doing it.
That reminds me, I'm a lot better now than I was when I made my Erfworld fanmix. I want to go back and rework it at some point, though probably not this week.My avatar is a remix that I made of Prince Ansom. Resource credit:

Re: Motivators and Lolerfs (image-heavy)
I've done some tweaking on mine, changing a few font choices (most notably, using Gorilla Milkshake for the ones that are cast-page quotes) and making them slightly smaller (that gets the horizontal-format ones within the 400-pixel rule, and reduces the artifacts that show up in enlarged images that were taken direct from the comic rather than from the blowups Rob provided).

The quotation marks indicate that it's a translation from the Arachnoidese that we see in the picture. Just in case it's unclear.
