Re: D&D 5e Princes of the Apocalypse IC
Jack stood staring at the floor while quietly taking in the information passed down to them. He was used to follow orders on a need to know basis and figured he needed no convincing or extra motivation in this case. He had a passionate hatred for raiders and pillagers, since he'd seen more than his share of it.
He waits for Theren and Anac to finish and raises his head to lock eyes with Lord Majarra:
"And the specifics of the mission you mentioned, if you please. I vow to investigate the events you describe and take all possible actions to put a stop to the evil behind it. On my word."
He doesn't raise his voice or pump up his chest. He doesn't draw his sword symbolically or make any gesture what so ever to emphasize his words but somehow, just the words and the calm way he says them make it so that there is no doubt in anyone's mind he plans to follow through to the bitter end.Last edited by WarTortoise; 2016-07-14 at 06:38 AM.

Re: D&D 5e Princes of the Apocalypse IC
Thiadel listens to Lord Majarra as he speaks about raiders and criminals when a sudden but recurring thought comes to mind, Xander... She hasn't heard from him in a while and it's been worrying her. She stays quiet throughout the discussions with the others as they ask their questions. Her mind wanders as the possibility of him being involved in these mundane events in the valley start to seem more like a reality. Her uneasiness is starting to show, she tries to stay as calm as she can and maintains her composure while everyone asks their questions.

Re: D&D 5e Princes of the Apocalypse IC
Spoiler: OOCAlright. The repairs aren't done yet, and I had to type this up during my breaks at work, but I figured an IC update would be nice. While I can't show you a (badly drawn) map of Dessarin Valley yet, here you go.
Nendir, in response, shakes his head. "I'm afraid we've nothing concrete. So far, what we've heard suggests they prefer mostly Evocations and Transmutations, but they might be able to wield much more."
Momentarely, Nendir seems confused, as his eyes wander from Anac, to the fruitbowl full of half-eaten fruit, then right back to Anac again.
"Y-...yes, they were. Were they not to your taste?" Suddenly, he clears his throat, attempting to return to the topic at hand. "In any case, those are some interesting news. I've not yet heard about such a thing. Where did you come across this information? It could provide a good starting point for your investigations."
With his fingers clasped, Nendir intently listens to Jack's oath. He subtly nods his head, as if agreeing with all that is said, bu then suddenly raises his hand to gesture the knight to stop. "All in due time, Sir Bruneau. First, there is something else I must adress." He turns his head, directing his attention to Thiadel.
"Miss Moonbrook, you are perhaps wondering why you have been called here as well. You are, after all, a performer with only limited experience in real combat. Truth be told, the reason is your connection with Lord de Lancette." The elderly noblemen waits for a moment to judge your reaction, before continuing. "You shouldn't be surprised that I know of your relationship. While there certainly are circles among Waterdeep's nobility that would disapprove of it openly, it wasn't a well-kept secret.
That said, you are not the first group we have sent to investigate these recent phenomena. Lord de Lancette, when we first received reports of the attacks, volunteered to ride for the Valley. During that time, he appeared confident he would root out the problem before the end of the year, and even told us he would call upon allies within the local Slumber Hills. But now, we've not heard from him in over a month. There have been no messages, nor news of his fate. Nor have we ever heard from these supposed 'allies' of his.
We called you here because you are close to him, and have the required skills for an undertaking of this nature. As such, you present our best chance of finding out what has happened to Lord de Lancette."

Spoiler: Jack and MoonbeamAs Nendir answers Karashi's question, you cannot help but notice his eyes slightly drifting away to look nowhere in particular, and his tone sounding somewhat less certain than before. It's almost like something else is on his mind, though you cannot tell what.

For a moment, Nendir hesitates, before retorting with a polite smile of his own. "It's nothing of importance. As a representative of the Lord's Alliance I am not to muddy your investigation with unfounded rumors and suspicions." His expression has become utterly unreadable, and his voice is as firm as before.

"This seems to be a very important undertaking, especially to involve a member of the Fey Court, which makes me wonder: What will you be preoccupied with while we're working on this crucial mission?" The half-elf asks impishly, but with just enough genuine curiosity as to not be insulting.

Re: D&D 5e Princes of the Apocalypse IC
After Nendir answers Moonbeam Glitterspeck, Jack nods and adds his piece to the conversation.
"I consider Lord Xander de Lancette extremely capable and diligent. He was one of the finest men I've had the opportunity to work with and I consider him a personal friend. This news, while worrying, is not damning and I have every intention on finding him alive." Jack seemingly says to Nendir but gently places a hand of comfort on Thiadels shoulder.
The news must be a tough blow for her but he needed everybody sharp and motivated. He hadn't officially known about deLancette's affair but he had noticed the change in Xander's mood after meeting Ms. Moonbrook. Jack wasn't condeming anything, since there was suffering enough to go around. Two people finding comfort within each other shouldn't ever even be frowned upon in his book.
For the motivation of a few others he couldn't wager a guess, but his was clear. Thiadel could be relied on to see this through and so could Karashi from what he could wager. The others.. He would have to keep an eye on.
Turning his attention fully to Nendir he continues. Moonbeam seemed to have picked up on the same thing Jack noticed earlier and he wasn't about to let Nendir get away with a politically correct answer. Not with deLancette's life possibly in the balance.
"As investigator of these events it is our duty, my sworn duty, to uncover the truth of what's happening." His voice and expression stern, his eyes hard. Jack Bruneau has a well practiced air of authority that indulges no beating around the bush. He is well used to speaking like this to get answers and at this time it matters not to him that he addresses a Lord. Lord or street-rat, they all answer to the law and by heart, Jack is a lawman.
"I appreciate your concern about not wanting to 'muddy' our investigation and your misgivings about the information are well noted.. However I suggest that if you have anything to add, however much rumors and suspicions, that you spit it out."
He eased up a bit but only to give Nendir the space to answer the question. Jacks expression remains a rock to match Nendirs.
"Let us be the judge of exactly how unfounded these rumors are."

Numb. Shock. She knew this could happen, and it did. She looks down after making eye contact with Nendir and hearing about her lover's fate, trying her best to maintain her composure. She gives Sir Jack a sullen but thankful nod and clutches his hand on her shoulder for a second. "Th-Thank you, Lord Majarra. I may not have the skills required to undertake your initial request but, if you needed someone to find him, it godsdamn well have been me. Oh, and I appreciate your open-mindedness to such relations, it's something not quite common among many nobles here."
This was some big news that was just unloaded on her and she's still in shock but, she quiets down and allows the others to interject.

Theren couldn't help but smirk, appreciating Karashi's enthusiasm. It was a welcome break from everything being revealed, which at first began to overwhelm him. But Karashi's outburst let him relax and take in everything that had been said.
He remained quiet though, lettimg others do the talking. It seemed Jack had picked on something he did nit, but berating the Lord with an additional voice didn't seem like the right course. He instead waited to see Majarra's reaction.

Re: D&D 5e Princes of the Apocalypse IC
"It is?" Nendir seems genuinely surprised by this revelation, and quickly leans forward towards the scholar. "Then it's likely there is a connection. The Slumber Hills are a large area, but if you can figure out where exactly these vulture riders are coming from, and who they are you might have already provided us with an important breakthrough."
Nendir says nothing in response to Karashi's boast, but you notice one of his eyebrows raising just a tiny bit, and a tiny smile forming momentarily on his lips.
For a few very uncomfortable seconds, Nendir silently stares back into Jack's eyes, neither party allowing themselves to even blink. Between them, there is an unspoken contest of will, one that lasts only a few seconds, but feels uncomfortably long. But eventually, Nendir simply shakes his head.
"No, I'm afraid I've got nothing to add. I am already giving you all the confirmed information I have."
Then, the uncomfortable moment is over, and he once again relaxes a little bit.
"I'm happy you asked, Sir Glitterspeck." he says, apparently glad for the change of topic. "While you are gone, I will be preparing for the arrival of a diplomatic delegation from Mirabar. One which, if I may add, will be travelling through the Dessarin Valley."
This time, he doesn't pause, swiftly using this revelation to jump onto his next point."By the time you'll arrive in the Valley, they'll already be on their way. Now, don't worry about them. Their caravan will be heavily guarded and full of experienced warriors. I personally lend some of my finest soldiers to their defense, and a relative of mine has joined with a personal guard of her own." His tone of voice seems confident enough, and it appears as though he believes what he is saying.
Then, Nendir gets up, stepping over to the table in the middle of the room. Pushing aside the fruit bowl, he draws a slightly faded map from his pocket, laying it out before you. All of you immediately recognise it as a map of the Valley, showing all of it's major settlements.
"You will be travelling here, to Red Larch. It is a small town, but well situated and it is close to the Slumber Hills. There, you will meet up with a contact of the Lords' Alliance, one Maegla Tarnlar. Her husband is the town's clothier. She will provide you with the latest information from the Valley itself and regularly send me information regarding your progress.
Within a few days, the Delegation will pass through Red Larch. They will tell you about anything they might have seen, and provide further equipment for your mission. Unless you have a very good reason, you will not enter the Slumber Hills before meeting with them. After Lord de Lancette's disappearance, we do not wish to take any risks."
Spoiler: A badly drawn map
The black lines represent roads. Brown is mountains, green is forests, and blue is water. Hope this isn't too bad...
I'll put a copy into the first post of the OOC in any case.
- Triboar: A small city, famed for its grand horse market. Many retired adventurers live here, making a living as guides for merchants and other travellers. Also known for the fine 'Triboar Wine'. The road north of it leads towards Mirabar, and the one west of it towards the great city of Neverwinter.
- Yartar: A large, fortified city, filled with prosperity and poverty alike. Mostly known for its densely populated, four-story tall buildings.
- Westbridge: A small village of mostly farmers, right between Red Larch and Triboar.
- Red Larch: A small, but prosperous town. Most people travelling through the Valley pass through here, giving the town a steady source of income. Further, it is home to a large marble quarry, that regularly delivers to Waterdeep. Maegla Tarnlar, your contact, awaits here.
- Beliard: A small village, home to many cattle ranchers. A popular retirement spot for soldiers and mercenaries from the bigger cities.
- Womford: A tiny settlement near the Dessarin River, consisting mostly of an old mill and a few cottages.
- Amphail: The closest settlement to Waterdeep, about three days north of it. Known as a vacation spot for Waterdhavian nobles and for training horses.
- Summit Hall: A fortified monastery, dedicated to Tyr, god of Justice. One of the biggest peacekeeping forces in the Valley.
- Feathergale Spire: An ancient tower that has stood empty for many years, but recently seems to have become repopulated. Anac's tribe makes its camp about two thousand feet south of it.

Re: D&D 5e Princes of the Apocalypse IC
Nendir looks at Anac, and then Karashi with a clear, but dignified confusion. It seems he is not used to dealing with something like this. Still, when Moonbeam brings up the question of expenses, he snaps out of it and clears his throat.
"That would be me. Please, follow me."
Waiting for you to follow, the nobleman steps away from the table, and heads to the room's exit. He opens the door wide, and moves into the corridor beyond, where two nearby guards hurriedly stand at attention. However, he ignores them, and begins to lead you through the corridors of his mansion.
You pass through several more halls and corridors, past architecture hewn from pure marble and plated with shining gold. Banners and paintings hang everywhere, and exotic carpets lay beneath your feet as you walk. Still, you cannot spend too much time taking in the sights, as your guide seems very much focused on getting to his goal.
Eventually, you step outside the mansion, and after a quick jaunt through the garden Nendir brings you into the stables. There, the captain of the guard already awaits, working alongside several young stable hands to put the finishing touches on a smallwagon, covered with a thick burlap blanket. The rotund warrior has a sour expression that appears to be permanently engraved in his face, and roughly yells a greeting towards his master.
"Everything's ready, your lordship."
"Very good. Now, as I said, about your provisions..." Nendir turns back towards you, his hand stretched out towards the wagon. "I have taken he liberty to fill this cart with enough supplies to last you until Red Larch. It contains mostly dried fruits and vegetables alongside salted jerky. I will also be giving you a mule to drag it. As far as weapons and armors go, your own will have to suffice for now. However, seeing as Mirabar is a dwarven city, the delegation will surely be able to provide equipment of a far higher quality than I could give you right now. I assume this will be enough?"
Though his words seem pleasant enough by their own, the way he says them carries a strange finality to it, as though trying to say 'This is all you'll need for now. We're not paying for more.'. Especially when coupled with the stern glance the captain is giving you all.
Still, should you deign to look under the blanket, you'll find a large quantity of the kinds of foods Nendir mentioned, partially stashed away in smaller burlap sacks. It's all durable, not very tasty-looking food, and you figure it's going to keep you going all the way to Red Larch. Heck, you'll probably have enough left for one or two days afterwards.
From the other end of the stable, a young, dwarven boy is leading the aforementioned mule towards you. Looking at it, it appears to be a young, healthy animal, and will have no trouble pulling the cart.
Spoiler: OOCAny last attempts to beg Nendir for equipment will need to happen now.
In the next IC post, I'll be moving things forward to your travelling.

Karashi thinks to herself. 'Library? Pffft, storytellers much better than books. Not ruined when wet.'
She looks over the food. Not the greatest, but it would be poor manners to turn one's nose at another tribe's gifts. "Thank you for the generous foods," Karashi says with a head bow. "We will eat them wisely. ...except the mule. We bring that back."Last edited by DigoDragon; 2016-07-28 at 12:15 PM.
