    Flare

I've thought about it some. First of all, my sleep spell won't work against zombies, so I can really only do so much. Second, if the two of you get into trouble, I think you'll be glad if I'm around to help get you out of it, what with my talent in pitched battle, what with my talent for concentrated anarchy. Flare chuckles. And besides, I consider myself more resourceful than you give me credit for. Flare smiles serenely. I was just kidding about ruining your plans by the way. I'll let you call the shots while we pull off this operation. He shifts his stance and mounts up once again. I get the idea that you'd rather do this without me, but the truth is, I've already made up my mind. Let's go. Our custom isn't to eat horses in these lands. They're our friends.

    Harold Betruger
Harold waggles a finger at Flare.
"That thing you said right there; 'I'll let you call the shots on this one,' " he says, in a passable imitation of Flare's voice,
"You don't see the irony in saying effectively saying 'I don't care what you think because I made up my mind?' Especially since you seem to have grasped that I'd rather you didn't come along? Don't insult my intelligence by pretending you'll do anything at all but exactly what you want to. I say that if you won't listen to me, let's put it to Sir Titus! This is his operation, after all."
If there's nothing out there, then what was that noise?

    ****.

Len facepalms as the conversation takes a U-turn and makes a beeline for exactly where she didn't want to go; so close. So damn close.

Actually, she wonders if they would even make it past the magistrate's foyer without getting into it and being thrown out before the magistrate had a chance to do anything nefarious.

She listens as Harold invokes Titus' knightly perogative on the situation. Silently, she crosses her fingers and hopes Titus answer involves either 'no' or 'Mark of Justice'.

OOC: This is better than most webcomics, actually

Titus hesitates a few moments before responding. Most of his focus appears to be on rubbing his chin, as his eyes stare vacantly into the great beyond. After a few moments of (what may have been) deliberating, he finally gives his input.

"I don't know much about how you cooperate with one another, but from the sound of it, it seems not well." He glances between both Flare and Harold. "I would say, that, since you two seem to take different approaches, that separation would be good. However, as master Flare had said, his magicks are not effective against the fiends we would face in the field - so, I would imagine he would make the the most of his efforts elsewhere."

    He ponders for another moment.

"Although, it was not my idea to be splitting up in the first place - that was yours. Personally, I think it very dangerous to split our forces, which is why I suggested the quick blitz to Magistrate Thaddeus' manor. Truly, I know he is a threat and the accounts of the townfolk to be enough to convince others of his crimes - but, I had agreed to your terms because I thought you were confident in your ability to make things work better. If you want to continue with your plan, I suggest you take the steps necessary to make it all work, together. I cannot make any battle formation that will solve all of your problems - only patience and compromise amongst yourselves will get you what you want."

Drahlo simply watches the others speak with a fascinated expression on his face. The pace at which the conversations change and the interaction between these people were intense and difficult to follow. After a few moments, Guha climbs out of the satchel and onto his shoulder, probably annoyed at having a book shoved so suddenly into her home.

I can't say I disagree with Sir Titus here. I don't understand why we've decided that we need to split up before we've even gotten a basic look at the situation. Let's hold off on this conversation for now. We'll have this discussion when it becomes necessary.

Titus speaks sense. Let's get there, scout the area, and decide what to do based on the situation we encounter. It's what any military commander would do in this situation. We need more information. Then we can formulate a plan so we don't waste our effort bickering.

If we're going to do something, I suggest we do it. Now.

Shimar's actually a bit sad about leaving the horse on the ground. He doesn't care about the horseless people running away.

Horses are our friends. That's why we eat 'em, when they are slain. What do you people eat hear anyway? No bear, no horse... no wonder you only grow so small and weak here on the lowlands.

OOC: Aw, they pulled the Dad tactic of 'Well discuss this later in hopes that your ADHD will kick in before then.' Weeeeak!

IC: Len also mounts, feeling equally cowed and embarassed by Titus' scathing lecture. That must be something they teach at paladin...school. Or maybe he just has kids that argue a lot, who knows?

She sways and rocks in the saddle as the horse trots along before getting an idea; she hauls open the carrying bag and produces some of the parts for her newest work in progress, the flail Bui-kodo (shut up, it sounded kewl.)

The new chain gives off an oily, dark shine as it snakes its way under a bundled lump of cloth, where the head of the weapon is. She isn't entirely sure whether she quenched it at a high enough temperature after that night of forging, but she doubts that such a solid hunk of steel is going to develop the same stresses that a long thin blade would during concussion. More important to her at the moment is getting the chain firmly seated inside the wooden handle.

She takes the two semi-cylindrical halves of the handle and seats them around the metal pommel that ends the chain, gradually scraping away more and more wood with a fluted carving knife until she has a full cavity for the chain to run through. The back of the walking horse is the worst possible place to do this, by the way, and she cuts her hand pretty good (1 DMG "Ow! Frrgn brgqn smfgahan-fragglm!!"). Don't try it at home.

Moving on, she lays the chain in one half and pries open a vial of treesap mixed with shreds of animal sinew, a fairly respectable composite adhesive that too many craftsmen disdain for its aura of improvisation. She upturns the vial and irrevocably commits to the handle as is, painting the glue between the chain links and wood alike, before placing the other half and clamping it tightly. She smiles when the sap oozes through the gap where the two halves of the handle mate; that means she has a good seal.

Humming absently, she fumbles with the leather binding with one hand while keeping a strong grip on the drying handle with the other, and begins to braid around and around.

Shimar watches as Len tries to craft a weapon while mounted on a horse. He seems to be interested in the makings of the weapon, and drives his horse near to Len's, and even offers a helping hand to hold something for a while, or the like.

You're a blacksmith? How interesting. I know a dozen ways to kill a man with this weapon of mine - raises his jagged glaive - but to tell the truth, I'd be troubled if I had to craft it for myself.

    What's this weapon you're makin'?

"This is going to be a flail" Len smiles, busily interspersing leather wraps and pitch in layers. Its messy work, with the pitch oozing up between the straps and the sterile reek of rubbing alcohol* burning her nostrils.

The truth is, this is one of those times when an extra pair of hands is more likely to get accidentally cut than anything, but just to be nice, she hands Shimar a carving wedge and piece of ivory, asking him to make something all cool and tribal-looking for a decorative cap over the pommel. Incorporating the ivory is just another of the traditions that she has for all her custom weapons, much like naming them**.

"I'll have to wait a couple days for the pitch to cure all the way, and then I'll take this," she holds up half a meter of unwrapped leather draped safely over her thigh as she explains. " ...soak it in water, and then finish wrapping. Once it dries, it'll be the tightest fit you can imagine, and it'll protect the glued layers below it so that I'm not getting sticky and gross in battle should they melt."

She's essentially finished with everything she can do before then, and so she holds the drying handle in her lap, watching Shimar carve.

"Maybe I'll make something for you one of these days. Are you a zweihander kind of guy, or maybe a bowhunter?"

solvent for the tree sap, in case you care. Good way to clean it off your hands and its the only way to fly if you want to use sap as a glue like this; it just flows wherever you pour it and then the alcohol evaporates away, leaving pitch exactly how you want it.

**Burai-no kodo roughly translating to "Heavy Hand" or "Overkill" in this case. Don't ask in which language this is so, it just does.

Once the party gets moving again, you all once again return to silence, calm, and serenity. It is as if you are the only creatures inside this wood, and your surroundings were merely nature's cloister to hide you from the chaotic noise that distorts the minds of countless city-folk. Here, there is such tranquility that even one's whisper would ring out, and its full strength be noticed.

As you follow the path before you, Titus continues to lead at his constant, slow pace, looking to enjoy the scenery. He hasn't spoken since you began moving again.

Abruptly, he halts. "Did you hear that?" he asks, glancing about. Shimar immediately hears the cries of what sounds like a young woman, pleaing for help. "Hello?! Somebody! Anybody! Please, help me!" Others can barely make out a voice, but all note it sounds panicked. Shimar pinpoints her location off the path to the northeast, as does Titus. "Someone's in trouble!" He looks to the thick woods before you, with the many trees blocking sight of any person, before drawing his sword and driving his horse forward. "Quickly! This way!"

    Shimar

The dense wood is bad for fighting from horseback. Shimar so only follows Titus for a little while, then jumps off his horse. If he has time, he gets his glaive ready, then starts after Titus running. He, however, not follows the paladin closely, and when they are close enough, the barbarian steers a little to the left, and motions to Harold to go to the right, so they would find if someone's preparing an ambush. He takes Whisper with him, and tells the dog to keep quiet, and look for the prey. Seeing that the paladin charges in, he doesn't care about slowing down, being secretive about his manouver: a charging knight is the best disguise one could ask for, and the dense forest gives a solid protection against arrows.

Titus hastily guides his horse through the wood, and the voice grows louder as you follow him. "Help! Somebody! Please!"

Within moments, you find yourself in a small circle, at the center is a large tree - at its base is what appears to be a stone shrine, of sorts. A woman lies face down in the mud beside it, completely motionless. There is nothing else is sight, but the trees around you.

Titus, at the front, dismounts and approaches the woman, glancing about for any signs of danger. Nothing happens as he makes his way close, and he kneels down beside her before reaching out to the body, to turn her over.

Her face is entirely covered in mud, and her eyes and mouth are closed. Titus begins to examine her for wounds, but from where you stand, she appears to have none.

As Flare calls out to Titus, the woman's eyes flash open. She bares a set of sharp and rigid teeth as she reaches out for Titus - who caught completely off-guard and left vulnerable to the attack - and he is barely able to even move before a thick, black nail that grew from seemingly nowhere penetrates his shoulder. He attempts to escape her clutches, but to no avail - and even after taking a fist to the face from the vigorous man, the woman appears unharmed and holds strong.

Flare begins chanting his spell, as Len, well prepared for an ambush, takes immediate action and goes for the creature with strength of arms. With a mighty swing of her glaive, she catches the woman on her blade with some force, prompting her to let go of her grip on Titus. He falls back as the woman stands wounded by Len's attack - but her expression is one more of frustration than of pain. The fact that she is able to withstand the blow reveals she is not human - as most men to suffer such a deadly assault would surely die almost instantaneously. With a demonic shriek, she lunges for Len with one of her claws, stabbing straight through the armor and into the warrior-woman's abdomen (5 damage).

As the rest of the party witnesses this, Shimar hears some movement in the woods surrounding you, and whirls around to see a strange robed woman with similarly strange claws and nasty, grinning teeth looking straight at him. Lucian then notes another approaching from another side - her appearance just as monstrous as the other two.

Of course it was an ambush... In half of a moment, the glaive raised up in his hand, ready to strike down. seeing that pain won't kill the whatever standing right next to him, he decides to dismember it instead. If it is slain before his turn, he'll move to the next target.

Sorry about the lack of posting lately. I usually try to post once a day, but if it's server downtime, I'm in trouble.

    Bardic Knowledge - (1d20+4)[12]

Harold's eyes dart from place to place, trying to figure out the angles, the tactics, the escapes. His hand hovers for a moment over the hilt of the rapier he'd borrowed, but then his hands move to a far more powerful instrument. Now wasn't really the time for a ballad of love or tragic demise, but a bit of rhythm was really the best he could add to the battle right now; anything to disrupt the chaos of the ambush.

If there's nothing out there, then what was that noise?
