    Default OOTS Showdown 4: revival

    Sign-up is open until 8/22

Showdown is a fun arena-style PvP game invented by Silkenfist over nine years ago. I've been intermittently revising the characters and adding new ones over the years in preparation for eventually running this.

    Basic Gameplay:
Each player plays a character from the Order of the Stick comic. Last person standing wins. You are free to strategize and scheme with one another. Many of the abilities synergize with this playstyle, although the rules never require you to work together.

Characters get one action per round, acting in order of initiative, which is rolled and posted prior to the start of the round. Players have 48 hours to send in their actions for the round by PM or possibly a Google Form if we have many players. After 48 hours is up, the narrator resolves the actions in sequence and then rolls initiative for next round.

    Spoiler: Sample Character: Roy
    Show
Roy: Lawful Good, Male, 20 HP, Initiative +1
Greatsword Attack: (attack) Deals 3 damage to any target.
Meat Shield: Choose up to three target characters other than Roy. Until the end of next turn, whenever they would be dealt damage, instead prevent that damage and Roy loses 1 HP.
Family Legacy: (passive) Roy’s attacks against evil characters are enhanced by 1.
Engage in Duel: Choose target character. That character must attack Roy if possible until one of them is dead or Roy chooses another character holding the ability.
Don the Belt: Roy becomes Female permanently (Tradein: +1 Initiative)
Grab your Bizarro Twins: (global passive) All attacks of the OOTS against the Linear Guild are enhanced by 1

Character Selection: Players post their top five choices in order to sign up. These top five choices must include at least one character with Good alignment and one with Evil alignment. Characters will be distributed based on player preference and alignment balance, with some favoritism towards having the members of the OOTS selected as PCs. Each player will be assigned a unique character--no duplicates. Alternatively, you can sign up for a random character. I will determine random characters after assigning everyone else's characters based on rank.

    Character Finalization:
Each character starts the game with four abilities, chosen from six possible abilities. Once characters have been distributed to players, the narrator posts the full list of characters and everyone must post which four abilities they are equipping their character with. Modifications are allowed within a reasonable time. Some abilities have a Tradeoff or Tradein associated with them. These are permanent modifications to the character’s starting state that help balance the ability.

    Rounds:
The narrator rolls initiative (1d20+modifier) for all characters and posts the initiative order in the thread. Players have 48 hours from this post to send in their actions by PM or Google Form. Players may not delay their characters’ actions in the initiative order. At the end of the 48 hours, the narrator writes a post resolving the actions in sequence and rolling initiative for the next round. Characters die immediately upon reaching 0 HP, unless otherwise noted.

Attributes: Each character has the following attributes, each of which can be altered during the game: Alignment, Gender, HP, Initiative Modifier, and four Abilities. HP cannot be raised above its starting value, unless otherwise noted.

Abilities: Each character has four starting abilities. Abilities may have one or more subtypes, such as passive, attack, spell, generating, or global passive. All abilities other than passive-type abilities require an action to use. Global passives have effects that reach beyond the character with the ability.

NPCs: Generating abilities create NPCs, whose actions are chosen by their creators. Unless noted otherwise, NPCs act at Initiative count 0 starting on the round they are generated, have no alignment or gender, do not count as “characters” for any purpose, and are immediately removed from the game when their creator dies.

Inactivity: If a player doesn’t act during a round, their action is forfeited and the character catches the “Inactivity Flu”. The Inactivity Flu deals 2 damage to the character for each round, he has been missing. (For example, if a character is absent three rounds, their character is dealt 2 damage in the first round, 4 in the second and 6 in the third). If you are worried about this happening, you may send in a template that dictates your actions for later rounds in the event that you fail to submit in time. Template characters will be designated as such.

I'd like to get as many people as possible to play, so I'm going to leave it open for sign up for a while. I'm not sure exactly how long is reasonable. A week? Ten days? Longer?

Showdown works best in a state of absolute chaos and I figure more players equals more chaos.

Yes, I can do that for you. Is it ok if I assign randomly after determining everyone else's characters? I would prefer not to override someone's preference because of a die roll.

    Sign-up is now closed

Below are the character distributions. Since trying to maintain strict alignment and principal character/supporting character balance would have required massive deviations from people's preferences, I have decided to honor your preferences.

Luckily, the random characters ended up balancing us out a bit in terms of alignment.

    Player Character
    Xihirli Black Dragon
    Pelican Julia
    Eggel Samantha
    Madmal Sabine
    ImperatorV Redcloak
    Libro Malack
    smasher0404 Nale
    Duck999 MitD
    Disc Lorde Belkar
    Tanar Aerdoth Haley
    Shadow11615 Teen Goblins
    sanelson_98 The Lawyers

Please post below which four abilities you are selecting for your character.

Be mindful of tradeoffs and tradeins. You may modify your selection by striking through your old choices and posting new ones in a new post.

The deadline for posting your abilities is Saturday, 8/26 8/27. At that point we will start the game!

Also, scheming and good-natured trash-talk is encouraged in this game :D Have at it!
