Default german translation

As I say, I have too much time:

#43
1st panel
Elan: Brr.. so kalt
Haley: Oh, noch 'ne Tür!
Roy: Vergesst es. Ich lauf' nicht in noch mehr Fallen rein.
Belkar: Na komm schon, wie stehen die Chancen, dass Xykon Fallen an zwei Türen hintereinander angebracht hat?

2nd:
Xykon: Ziemlich hoch sogar.

3rd:
Haley: Sei kein Waschlappen, Roy. Irgendwann müssen wir eh durch die Tür.
Roy: Nicht unbedingt. Belkar, führen die Spuren der Chimäre auf die andere Seite der Tür oder nicht?

4th:
Belkar: Äh, Moment. Sollte ich etwa immer noch diese Spur verfolgen?

5th: Was?

6th:

Elan: Dam dam dadam

Well, all you German-speaking people, feel free to correct or come up with the translation of the next strip. Like this we could all translate some when we feel bored :)

Edit: I think it's a bit better now.

Edit: The author of this post makes no claims to the value of this praise, either explicit or implied, as he ("The author") does not, actually, know German.

"wuss" is "Feigling" or "Waschlappen". I like "Waschlappen" better.

"Ich bin der gleichen Meinung" won't fit. You'll have to settle with "Ich stimme zu." or something like that.

(Is the redundancy wanted here? I didn't pay too much attention to it until now ;))

8th: Elan: Wunder? Gefahren? Geheimnisse? Wow, ich muss es wissen!
I would go with "Ui, lasst uns nachsehen!"

Apart from that, I'd be very happy to introduce my translation of #44 to you!

1st:
Nale: Seid gegrüßt! Es ist sehr nett, freundliche Gesichter in diesem Dungeon zu sehen!
Roy: Öh, sicher... Also, wer zum Henker bist du?
Nale: Na, Abenteurer so wie ihr, möchte ich wetten! Wir nennen uns die Lineare Gilde! (Or Linear Guild, if it is to remain untranslated like the Order of the Stick)
Belkar: Wäh, ich hasse Kobolde...
Yikyik: Buärgh, Halblinge...

2nd:
Elan: Wow! Wir sind der Order of the Stick!
Nale: Faszinierend!
Roy: He, es ist sehr nett, mal einem anderen Krieger zu begegnen.

3rd:
Roy: Du musst doch eindeutig der Anführer dieser Truppe sein. Vielleicht sollten wir unsere taktischen Methoden vergleichen!
Thog: Thog mag kaputtmachen.

4th:
Roy: ... Ach, vergiss es.

5th:
Nale: Sei nicht zu streng mit ihm. Intelligenz ist sein niedrigstes Attribut. (To German D&D-Players: Is there a shorter term for "dump stat"?) Tatsache ist, dass ich der Anführer und das strategische Genie hinter unserer Mission bin.

6th:
Roy: Du machst Witze.
Nale: Aber auf keinen Fall. Mein Name ist Nale. Erlaube mir, meine Kollegen vorzustellen... - Das hier ist Sabine, meine Stellvertreterin, und Hilgya Feuerhelm, meine geistliche Beraterin. - Unser Spurenleser Yikyik; - Und schließlich unser Zauberer, Zz'dtri. - Er redet nicht viel.
Hilgya: Sag hallo zu den lieben Abenteurern.
Yikyik: Beiß mich (Explain to me the meaning of "Bite me". Is ist more appropriately translated with "Leck mich" or something like that?)

7th:
Haley: Warte mal 'ne Sekunde. Sind Dunkelelfen nicht böse?
Nale: Gott bewahre! Nicht seit sie spielbare Rasse sind.

8th:
Nale: Nun besteht ihre Spezies nur noch aus Chaotisch Guten Rebellen, die sich danach sehnen, den schlechten Ruf ihrer bösen Artgenossen auszumerzen.
Haley: Böse Artgenossen? Sagtest du nicht gerade eben, sie seien Chaotisch Gut?
Nale: Details.

9th:
Haley: Wofür sind die Krummschwerter?
Zz'dtri: Die sind Standard.

What do you think about this translation? ;)

I saw absolutely nothing wrong with that translation. It might have something to do with knowing about 5 words of German and most of them from Schwarzenegger parodies; but you got my seal of approval.

I know very little German, but enough to understand it mostly by reading it, and the words I couldn't figure out, I learned by going back to the English. :)

Anyway, the term "bite me" probably is best explained as "I'd rather have you bite me." or "Why don't you make me?" It's usually said with a challenging face and a bitter voice.

Hope that helps.

Hey there, long time reader, first time poster.

I'm a german native speaker, so I'm glad to help you out with any translation probs. Most of little_earthquake's translation is fine, but there are two phrases that could sound better:

Vaarsuvius's speech in panel 7: replace "simple Eichentür" with "einfache Eichentür". Sounds better imo.

Panel 9: "Waah!" is more an exclamation of shock rather than wonder. I'd go with "Oooh..."

As for #44:

Panel 4: Thog was talking about "breaking stuff", so I'd add "Sachen". "Thog macht gern Sachen kaputt", although that would be a complete and grammatically correct sentence - not one of Thog's strengths.

Panel 5: There is no German term for "dump stat", at least none that I'm aware of.

Panel 6:
- "Keineswegs!" sounds more modern than "aber auf keinen Fall".
- Yikyik: "Leck mich!" or "Klappe!" is appropriately rude. ;)

Panel 7:
- "Warte mal ne Sekunde" is correct, but "Moment mal!" or "Einen Moment!" would be shorter. Depends on how much space you have.
- "Throw off" is better translated with "loswerden".

Panel 9:
Zz'dtri: "Die sind Standardausrüstung" or "Standardzubehör".

Here are my suggestions for #45:

1st:
Roy: "Entschuldige uns bitte für einen Moment, Nale."
Nale: "Klar doch." or "Sicher."

2nd:
Roy: "Also Leute, was haltet ihr von dieser 'Linear Guild'?"
OotS: "Paralleluniversum? Doppelgänger? Spiegel der Gegensätzlichkeit [I don't know the exact German term for this magic item]? Böse Zwillinge? Doppelgänger? Das hab ich bereits gesagt. Klischeehaftes Stilmittel?"

3rd:

10th:
Roy: "Weißt du, Haley, Schätze sind nicht SO wichtig."

12th:
Haley: "Sag das NIE WIEDER zu mir."

hey, cool! (As you see, I'm still not asleep. Why? I must stand up very early tomorrow.)
It just makes me so enthousiastic (or however you spell it) that now there's some fine translation/discussion action going on and wanted to say I totally agree with all of the suggestions to mine (except maybe the ta-ta-taa) and I will change it into the post tomorrow.

And for now, I don't have any, but I haven't yet looked at it so very neatly. Oh yes, did I mention I'm going to sleep now?

Holey moley there's a lot of interest in this. I wonder why we don't have more comics translated? I guess Rich didn't have as many international fans back in the double-digit-numbered comic days. Well, the revolution begins here...

Seeing how badly some German publishing companies screw up translations of D&D sourcebooks or Magic: The Gathering cards, outsourcing translation jobs to his fans might prove a better solution for the Giant. ;)

Wouldn't it would be better to just use some German colloquialism that has the same general meaning as "Bite me"?

Surely they have one... a nice short phrase that means equal parts "I really don't care about what you just said" and "I'm too stupid to think of a witty response". Kinda like "Your mother".

"Wenn sowieso beide Gruppen das Dungeon angreifen wollen"

I'd replace "angreifen" with "plündern".

Apart from that, this is a very good translation for that blastedly wordy #45.

And now, let's give #46 a try!

1st:
Haley: Alles, was ich sage, ist, dass wir denen nicht trauen können.
Roy: Das kommt von deinem Verfolgungswahn. ("Probleme, anderen zu vertrauen" is far too long and too complicated. I think "Verfolgungswahn" fits well enough, yet appreciate other opinions.)

2nd:
Haley: Was? Unsinn!
Roy: Von wegen Unsinn!

(Not being a D&D-Player myself, I ask of any German D&Ders to provide the proper translation of Sense Motive!)
Nale: Einverstanden!

8th:
Nale: Hand drauf!
*schüttel*

9th:
Nale: Mein machiavellistischer Plan fügt sich zusammen. Nun, da ich mir die Hilfe dieser leichtgläubigen Hohlköpfe gesichert habe, wird der Talisman bald mir gehören!

10th:
Nale: Wahrhaftig, jahrelang habe ich auf diesen Tag hin gearbeitet. Als wäre es erst gestern gewesen, dass mein Vater mich beiseite nahm und mir erzählte...

12th:
Haley: Pssst! Warum steht er bloß noch rum?
Roy: Innerer Monolog. Gib ihm noch'n bisschen.

instead of "machiavellistscher" I would use "skupelloser", it's more common use.

10th:
Nale: Wahrhaftig, jahrelang habe ich auf diesen Tag hin gearbeitet. Als wäre es erst gestern gewesen, dass mein Vater mich beiseite nahm und mir erzählte...

12th:
Haley: Pssst! Warum steht er bloß noch rum?
Roy: Innerer Monolog. Gib ihm noch'n bisschen.

But all in all I guess it's a really really good translation!!

sounds not so good with the two "ich", the 'original' version sounds better to my ears

I would prefer to say Xykon die Leiche.
I think the right german D&D term is "Leichnam"

seems ok to me that Nale uses an expression that's not that common, sounds more intelligent and Nale surely thinks he is quite a clever guy

The right German D&D-term for "Lich"? If you ask me, "Animate skeleton casting powerful spells" is also "Lich" in German.

If in the German D&D version "Lich" is translated with "Leiche" or "Leichnam", I'd propose to take out the translator and mangle him till he dies a painful death.

(Not actually, but he'd deserve it.)

I left "Dungeon" untranslated because AnyVince also left it untranslated, and I assume german roleplayers in general are used to use that term.

Finally, "Paranoia" IS "Verfolgungswahn", so we agree on that translation ;)
This signature is boring. The stuff I write might not be. Warning: Ponies.

The word Lich actually is commonly translated with "Leichnam", if it is translated at all.

I would like to add that I think "Paranoia" and "machiavellistisch" are beautiful words so I vote for keeping them.

All right, #47 coming up:

Panel #1:
- Das ist doch zum Kotzen. Jetzt muss ich mich mit einer Bande von totalen Versagern abgeben.
(I do not know how to translate "skeezy")
- Ja, so fühle ich mich an jedem Tag meines Lebens.
- Halt´s Maul, ich versuche zuzuhören.
- Zwing mich doch, Missgeburt.

- (the same Spanish text)
"After all, they can´t ALL be werewolves..."
(last words of the first excursion to Ravenloft)

"was ihn da getroffen hat", it's past
maybe there's a better german expression for this
I shall contemplate on it

Yeah!

I'm in german One, so i've been using the German translations as a way to tell how well I'm doing.

I can proudly say that I understood "Y'all want to see the bed on fire!"

So, thank you, thank you fluent speakers.
