I had a funny idea for playing Blood Bowl as an RPG game using the Fantasy Role-Play 2nd edition rules.

Basic premise is that the players are the inhabitants of a small town of largely outcasts that have managed to stay independent from the larger nations basically on virtue of the fact that the land their on is considered such a key buffer state that any force trying to take it over would be seen as an act of war by nearly everyone else. In order to resolve this situation, they decide to have a blood bowl league with the land as the prize for the nation of the winners.

Naturally no one asked the inhabitants of the PCs' village what they think about this situation, and undoubtedly they're liable to be pushed out of their homes (or worse) by anyone who wins the land.

Thus there is only one solution.

Start their own blood bowl team by recruiting an eclectic mix of amateur weekend players in the village, and traverse their way through the violent and byzantine world of professional blood bowl leagues in order to have a shot at retaining their homes.

The players would do stuff on and off the field. On field being non-traditional combat where they would also have to make plenty of checks to get the ball down the field. Off the field they would largely be doing more intrigue things like getting sponsors and new players, dealing with scandal and sabotage, that sort of thing.

They would largely be playing as the "star players" of the team, the rest of the slots being filled by NPC grunts, though there might be room for more "off-field support" such as a magician that can't be on field due to rules of the game, but can influence things from the sidelines (so long as he avoids the ref's attention)

I also like the idea of the players starting with largely basic careers (to represent that they are essentially ascended amateurs) before progressing to more specific blood bowl careers.

What do you guys think. Could this work with and be a fun way to use the Warhammer Fantasy RPG rules.
